What was the spark that started your Emmett Till Road project?
I'm a product of the Great Migration of black families from the deep south (Mississippi) to the north (Chicago) This is a huge part of who I am as through this migration, my ancestors left the hardships of the Jim Crow South to come north where they found new opportunities. In essence Emmett Till Road is a metaphor for suffering in this life physically in my humanity and spiritually in new birth as a Christian. In my humanity, I've experienced the ups and downs that life often brings: pain, illness, hurt, shame, heartbreak; in my Christian walk I've experienced a rebirth, and with it, a new set of struggles: wrestle with sin (Romans 7:15), the challenges of this world, etc. However, through it all we are more than conquerors through Him that loves us (Romans 8) and the GOOD NEWS is I can take heart ( John 16:33) b/c Jesus has overcome the world. Emmett Till also is an ode to 71st street where I grew up in Chicago's Englewood/West Englewood neighborhood (honorary Emmett Till Road), named for a young boy who in 1955 went south for the summer and never came back home to Chicago. I carry his memory in the name of this project and commemorate him as apart of the larger narrative which is "what is everything we have to go through to make it home at the end of the day? " Through it all, from toil to triumph, we will make it home to heaven, safely delivered by Christ. Emmett Till Road in short is my coming of story, an ode to home and I want to take others with me on this journey sonically through this album
Every project has that point where you feel stretched what was your push moment while working on this one?
MMy push was to be vulnerable, this project was cathartic to me as I recounted memories of everything that transpired in my life from my parents divorce, to witnessing the dark side of the neighborhood, sexual abuse, surrendering my life to Christ, and experiencing the beauty of Christian community. I had to lay everything out on the table and share my truth without doubting myself or worrying about what people will think of me. It's a very honest, raw, album full of emotion and relatable moments. My faith in Christ is always the impetus that moves my message forward and my husband who produced some of the music, my family who contributing to this album and Verbal Renaissance, my label, all helped propelled me forward by affirming what I was doing and encouraging me to be as creative as possible.
Can you walk us through a lyric or verse from Emmett Till Road that holds the most weight for you?
"My Aunts daughter molested me, God's love protected me, cousin's said I'd be turned out, but look at how I turned out. Amazed at how God above keeps blessing the steps I take, want more of Him of less of me, I know that I can't manage U God I'm not divine, grateful for the grace you placed on me in 99 " These lyrics from a section of my song entitled "99" reminded me of how vulnerable I had to be to expose the sexual abuse that happened to me and how God kept me through a very sensitive, tough, situation.
I was 8 years old when this [abuse] took place and it changed my life forever. I could've turned out very differently but God was with me and had a plan for my life to save me and use me for His Glory. Abuse victims suffer in silence but for me I had to rap that line and put it out there. There was something so freeing about it. People will say and do all types of negative, toxic, damaging things to you but only God has the final say about who you are and what you will become. I'm glad God is the one writing my story and He's not finished with me yet, I hope listeners take that from this album.
How has your walk with Christ shaped your artistry and creative process?
I'm always Christ conscious when it comes to my overarching themes and the "WHO" I'm pointing to. I never want the gospel to be lost in translation, even in the love songs I wrote on this record, I wanted it to be something that is Christ honoring. This is always at the forefront of my mind. When I was about 15/16 years of age (when I started rapping) I was unsaved and I cursed in my music, talked about violence, bragged on myself, and emulated the rappers I heard on the radio, it was all about me, all about what I indulged in, the things that displeased God, however when I got saved ten years later, it became about how Christ rerouted all those things in my life to center around Him so that my lyrics but most importantly my life style would honor Him. My story is all about how God redeemed various aspects of my life to pull my focus toward Him and I pray others would consider God in their daily lives and realize their need for Him just as I did.
Can you share about working with your husband on your label and how that partnership influenced this project?
My husband and Verbal Renaissance label hold regular meetings to pray, study scripture and encourage one another. Our foundation and commitment to scripture is strong and we're also tapped into hip hop culture which informs us on what we need to speak to when it comes to the current climate/culture we live in. We sharpen one another, correct one another, and equip/encourage one another to live boldly in Christ. As a rapper, I've been challenged to try different flows, cadences, rhyme schemes and explore different subject matter. When you're surrounded by other artists, it makes you better and helps you grow, this is the unity I have with my husband and with my label. All the artists are also parents so it helps to have artists who understand how hard it is to find balance when your husband/wife/kids are pulling you in different directions at times
Desert Food in a Dying World—what does that title mean to you in this season?

Our world has so much chaos and turmoil, only Jesus can give the hungry living bread and give the thirsty living water that satisfies eternally. This is a message for all people for all time.
If listeners only take away one thing from this project, what do you hope it is?
Our life's journey make us who we are, we have experiences, stories, and narratives that will touch other people's lives However, we shouldn't waste our lives but use everything to glorify God. Sin deceives us into thinking we're in control but we're not, we're either under the control of Satan on the wide road that leads to hell or under the control of the Holy Spirit on the narrow road that leads to Christ in God. What road are you on? I sinned on Emmett Till Road, I had bad relationships on Emmett Till Road, I lived life on my own terms on Emmett Till Road but then came to Christ on Emmett Till Road and my life was transformed and my story changed forever. This too could be you, this is the story I'm telling that is true to my life and I hope it shows others who God is and what he can do through someone like little ole me
