Stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is blocked resulting in damage to an area within the brain.

consequences of vascular disease in the brain will depend upon the part of the brain that is affected. Stroke occurs when a blood vessel becomes blocked or ruptures, resulting in damage to an area within the brain. If a large vessel is affected, the outcome may be rapidly fatal or may lead to very severe disability. If smaller blood vessels are affected, the outcome is less critical and recovery may be good. The most common types of disability are the loss of use of one side of the body and speech problems(4). The main symptoms of stroke are sudden and include weakness, numbness, confusion, vision problems, dizziness and headache (Figure 2.3).
