The Institute of Structural Design was pleased to introduce Martin Knight as the guest professor for the summer studio 2017. As an architect, he manages an extraordinary and successful ofďŹ ce for bridge design close to London UK. While looking for an appropriate design task, pedestrian and cycle bridges were seen as a ďŹ tting challenge.The chosen building site was in the city centre of Maribor. Maribor is close to Graz and this site was part of a former design competition. It is still highly relevant for the urban layout of Maribor. Footbridges highlight parts of the infrastructure and have a high relevance for the diversity of a city‘s road-system. Beside the structural challenge of footbridges, the limits of systems and materials lead to a deep and detailed design questions. Finally, the integral design process including the location, questions about technology and manufacture as well as the fruitful collaboration between the architects and civil engineers opend the door for outstanding projects.

1. CONNECTIVITY | Lent-Tabor-Bridge The bridge should be more than a connection between two points. It should combine the bridge and the embankments as a whole system. These elements should ow together by an individual type of space. Improving the quality of the public space in Lent will make it even more attractive to the users. 2. A place to stay | DESTINATION Creating memories at the bridge by enjoying the view through the river and the embankments of both sides will be one part of the bridge. Giving it some additional functions and turning into a space where you want to go and not just a means of getting to the other riverside. 3. ACCESSIBLE and USEABLE for everyone Designing a barrier free access to the bridge should be one of the main aspects. Everyone should have the same possibility to experience such a signiďŹ cant place. The focus is on the human being and showing respect for each other. 26

1. CIRCULAR MOVEMENT The idea from the beginning was to design a bridge with a seperate bicycle and pedestrian lane. The lanes should also be on different levels. 2. RELAXATION ZONES - NEW VIEWPOINTS OF THE MAIN BRIDGE An important point was also to have an area in the middle where people could stop, relax and enjoy the view of the old bridge, old town and the festival area. 3. MORE ACTIVITY POSSIBILITIES Multifunctional areas with greenery and benches.

A Bridge Is A Journey David Ortner

The new pedestrian bridge has to be more than a simple crossing above the river Drava. It has to connect both parts of the city to bring Lent and Tabor closer together and activate the river sites. A path from the old town in the north to the green residential area in the south. To create new spaces the bridge has to organize the local situation and form an entrance situation on both sides. On the Lent side it will introduce the people to the new car free pedestrian promenade and in Tabor to the rural green park area. To get a new perspective of the Maribor, the bridge has to be a journey. A place where people can rest and enjoy the different views. To attract more people to the Lent festival the bridge will be connected with an open air theater on the Tabor side which can be used for events or just to relax in the sun. A tiny link with a huge impact for the people, the economy, the exibility and Maribor. The new accessability and movement on both sides will raise the quality of the river banks and inuence the whole area in a positive way.

My bridge should be barrier free and easy to access for everyone. It should be a destination where people like to go and relax, spend time and enjoy the calmness of the Drava. The access ways to, from and over the bridge should be interesting, different and not direct. - Destination - Paths - Harmony

1. BARRIER FREE It should be possible for everybody to cross the bridge. 2. PLACE TO REST AND MEET There should be options for seating, talking or just looking into the distance. People should have the possibility to stay longer on the bridge and not just walk over it. 3. TEMPORARY SPACE A space where you can sell drinks, listen to music/lectures or many other things around the whole year.

Footbridge Maribor | Lent-Tabor Doris Rainer

The new footbridge in Maribor should connect the old city center with the district „Tabor“. To me, the bridge should not only be a connection between the two parts of the town but also an experience. It should be an autonomic construction, which is not compareable to the bridges around it - the footbridge to the west and the main bridge „Stari Most“ in the east. The bridge should be recognizable, and at the same time, decent and transparent; independent from the old one but still designed in a way that makes it questionable why there hasn‘t been such a bridge before. In addition, I want this bridge to be not only a necessary connection but also a place to stay, a place where people enjoy being. I want to take the stress away from the pedestrians so they can escape the daily rush. For that reason, my design makes the bridge. This point leads to the extraordinary shape of the bridge, which is formed like an „S“. On the Tabor side the bridge connects with a path for bicyclists and pedestrians. Where I placed the footbridge, there is also a path up the hill which leads to the roads of Tabor. 52

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Inhabitants of Maribor experience the bridge in many different ways - dependent on the time, speed, emotion, weather and season it allows them to stay, rest, enjoy and use the bridge as they want, creating a meeting and orientation point that might become a landmark by staying in memories. EXCHANGE - DUALISM Serve the city rather than only one side or the other. it´s not about creating a one-way bridge to improve Tabor´s connection to Lent. This bridge will strengthen the exchange and the whole city with benefit. POINT OF VIEW My bridge is creating additional points of view, by changing the level of perspective allowing people to look up to the old bridge and along the river 64

Cultural axes - Creating a new and an old identity __Building new axes to improve and to use the potential of the historic city. With the new zoning, and the connection between them (Historical city, Lent, Tabor) a whole new variety of intersections can be found, which are leading to new spaces and perspectives. Avoiding Barriers and eliminate them - Creating new, handicapped accessible and barrier free routes. Changing views and enable a completely different perspective __Through the adaption of the bridge, we enable the possibility to change the various viewpoints: You can either look from the hectic city into the green and calm parts of the city, or you can explore new and exciting spots in the city, by looking at it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; simply from a different view, from the bridge.

MORE QUALITY Both Embankments, Lent and Tabor, should get more quality so that they become places where people want to spend their time. Lent and Tabor have different qualities which should be preserved and highlighted. INVOLVE According to the ďŹ rst point, the new bridge should be involved in bringing more quality for the inhabitants. The bridge generates more quality due to a new connection to the upper housing area in Tabor and a new resting area on the bridge. UP AND DOWN The new bridge will be a 3 point connection and generates a direct connection to the upper Tabor side by accessing the existing pathway and the lower riverbank. The city center now can be reached more easily by foot and bicycle. 76

The main goal of the footbridge-design should be the reactivation of public local potentials in the bank area of the Drava river. Those potentials include localized, individualized consumption of goods, activities and space. This form of consumption relys on individualized production and services, implying also individual responsibility by ownership which constitutes identity and strengthens (sub-)cultural features. Now, the areas around the riverbank are bypassed a lot by movement streams and therefore, to some extent excluded from being part of the public life, which takes place more in the core of the city, around the area of the main square. One of the mid-term goals is to bring life down to the Lent riverbank.

CONNECTION_In my opinion, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s important to build a footbridge in that area because there is no way to cross the river Drava without going upto the upper level of the city. It should work as a functional, barrier-free but convenient and nice connection of both riversides. LANDSCAPE_ Maribor has a very nice river, the Drava, and it serves as a beautiful piece of nature. On the Tabor-side there is a walkway next to it. People already use this path as an recreational zone for sports or walks and would probably use it even more if you would make it nicer again and plant some trees and make it wider. IDENTIFICATION_Another main topic of my project will be the design. The city needs to have something to identify itself. The design should also serve to create a view along the river and should be used for the several festivals that happen there.

At the beginning I was think about about a Suspension Cable bridge cause of it‘s transperency but ƌĞĐŽŐŶŝnjĞĚƚŚĂƚƚŚŝƐŬŝŶĚŽĨďƌŝĚŐĞƉƵƚƐLJŽƵŝŶƚŽĂƐŝƚƵĂƟŽŶǁŚĞƌĞLJŽƵŚĂǀĞƚŽĨŽůůŽǁĂůŽƚŽĨ ules... It was important for me that the design of the bridge is „loud“ but could also be ransparent and doesn‘t take the view from Lent to the old bridge „Stari Most“. So I sketched an symmetrical bridge with the pylon on the Tabor side.

Footbridge in Maribor Eleonore Beranger

1. In the shape of the bridge itself. The view of the bridge is giving information about sequences you can experiment on it. Structure and function can be easily understand from an external point of view. Transparency for the middle part, structure very quiet under the deck. 2. Different functions are standing at different places all along the bridge and the embankments, so that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stand, walk or cycle the same way depending on your position on the bridge. 3. Two different types of structures, which give different perceptions and many sequences, on the way through the bridge for the users.

As with many European cities, the river has been the main axis along which the city of Maribor has developed throughout the centuries. After the demolition of the old wooden bridge that connected Lent and Tabor, the river started to play a more marginal role in public life of Maribor and therefore most of leisure and commercial activities have concentrated on the north riverside, on a higher level, in an â&#x20AC;&#x153;enclavedâ&#x20AC;? district with its back to the river. As a consequence the south side is isolated, mainly used for residential purposes and completely lacking of designed public spaces. The construction of bridges, that only link the higher levels and that are mainly crossed by cars, allowed high-speed links operating on a large scale. What the river sides need are new humanscale activities, therefore public spaces need to be reintroduced.

Footbridge in Maribor Odile Doepper

The city center is not yet well connected to the riverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s banks. This bridge should be a way, not only to connect the two banks together, but to increase the frequency of people passing the banks, and that would only be done if it is connected well with the historic part of the city. It should not only be an alternative to the old bridge, but give something more to the people living in Maribor. This bridge should connect, but also preserve, the existing access. It should give back the importance that the old neighbourhood deserves to the Lent bank. The two different atmospheres of the banks should be preserved, and the positive part of each underlined. The beautiful landscape of the river should not be disturbed by the bridge, it should harmonise with the old bridge and the water. This part of the city seems to be left out. The area along the river is not used as in the city center, with some terraces, bars and cafĂŠs. This bridge should be a way to energize this part of the city, to make people want to go down the hill to enjoy being in a more natural environment. 110
