Unhappy with your current printer!
Pride of homeownership is great fun, but it can also be a lot of work. Regular checks and maintenance of your home’s exterior can really save on time and money in the long run.
copy & print project management
A GREAT paint job is identified by four things: preparation, materials, adhering to the manufacturer’s specifications, and the application to get the best results. Hiring only a fully licensed, insured, and experienced contractor to do the work is highly recommended.
Give us a call and let us show you why we are Elk Grove’s premier copy and print management company. From business cards to directories, there is nothing we cannot do. Give us a call today and find out why you should not be afraid of change. We are the missing piece of the puzzle you have been searching for.
The maintenance of your home’s paint or protective coating is your first line of defense in shielding your home from damaging natural elements. Over time, as paint deteriorates, it loses its ability to protect. Extreme sunlight causes fading, expansion, cracking and peeling as UV rays break down paint’s sealant properties. Excessive exposure to water by rain or sprinkler systems sets in and expedites water damage and severe dry-rot to your home’s structure. We liken these ‘symptoms’ such as the visible breakdown of paint to that of a toothache. The toothache is merely a symptom of an underlying problem. By the time you can see your paint is doing any of these things, your home’s protection has already been compromised. The replacement of structure, siding and trim can be very costly and can easily add up to nearly the amount of the paint job itself when the time comes. Heed the warning and avoid the toothache!
We think you would agree that a fresh coat of paint can really improve the look of your home, both inside and out. As professionals in our field, we consistently try to give homeowners tips to help them preserve what is our most valuable asset.

Health & Wellness Prevention is better Two things you don’t want to share! We all host bacteria in our mouths so everyone is potentially at risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Here are some facts you may find useful…
Bacterial Infections In caries (tooth decay), Streptococcus mutans, is the major bacterium that uses sugars to generate acids that dissolve dental enamel, making teeth susceptible to cavities. In gum disease, plaque – the soft thin film you feel on your teeth – is a biofilm which hosts many different bacteria.
Transmissible You can pass on gum disease and cariogenic bacteria to the people you care about by kissing, blowing on food, or sharing utensils.
Preventable You can reduce your risk for caries by avoiding frequent sugary carbohydrates snacks and by keeping saliva flowing. Saliva is your natural shield against acid. Daily removal of soft plaque by brushing and flossing keeps it from building up then turning 6 | Elk Grove Monthly
into hard tartar or calculus, promoting gum disease.
Reversible In the initial stages of caries, remineralization may reverse the process. As the cavity gradually grows to be established, treatment becomes more complex and invasive. Gum disease can appear silently and we may arrest it with prompt treatment before it progresses to create inflamed, tender, bleeding gums, and deep pockets of infection that can lead to tooth loss and systemic implications. We have many effective strategies to prevent and treat these two diseases, so please call us if you have any questions or to arrange an appointment for a healthy, beautiful smile!

Tips for creating a beautiful landscape (ARA) - It may be cold outside, but homeowners are already dreaming of creating beautiful garden settings around their homes come spring. Landscaping success doesn’t have to be hit or miss, and if it has been for you, it may be time to call in a professional landscape designer. Why? Because in the long run, hiring a landscape designer can cost less than doing it yourself. You’ll get a “doable” design created right the first time, saving you the cost of repeated tries at getting it right or planting the wrong plants in the wrong spots. A professional landscape designer envisions creative solutions to the most difficult outdoor challenges or problems they’ve more than likely solved before. Plus, a high-quality landscape increases home sale prices up to 10.8 percent, compared to a home with a simply average landscape, according to the Journal of Environmental Horticulture. Here are some tips from professional landscape designers to create your dream garden. First, consider your space and any “issues” that it has. Hiding an unsightly air conditioning unit, adding privacy and changing boring views to beautiful ones are issues that landscape designers face with many clients. A designer sees the problems that you see, and often the ones you don’t, and can offer solutions to create beautiful, functional and earthy-friendly landscapes to add to your lives. Do your homework. Tear out pictures from
Home & Garden magazines, while not everything might be possible for your garden, it will give your landscape designer a visual starting point. Don’t forget about hardscape such as patios, decks and fencing; designers can help with these also. Many homeowners find that it takes the help of a designer to create a well-planned landscape project that includes both plants and hardscape. While there is a cost to hiring a landscape designer, it is ultimately more economical to work with an expert to create a plan specific to your yard. The project is completed in a timely manner and within budget when you take your time and create a landscape plan. Expect to spend about 10 percent of the total cost of the project on the design. Research and reach out to a few landscape designers. Be sure to interview several designers to find one who meets your needs and personality. Review the portfolio or Website of each designer, and visit some of their work if possible. Finally, if you have a budget in mind, share this with the designer up front. You can hire a landscape designer for a range of services. You might choose to hire a designer for a consultation for ideas that you might implement yourself, You could also hire a designer to give you a complete design for your garden. When it comes to implementing the design you have choices, involve the designer and landscape contractor or even do the work yourself. Also, you do not have to complete the whole plan at once. A landscape can be installed over a period of time as well. Take the first step to a dream garden. February 2010 | 9

Aging in place can be done with style and grace (ARA) Updating one’s home to accommodate changing needs as one ages - doesn’t have to mean sacrificing a home’s style and decor. From attractive lighting designed to work well for aging eyes to barrier-free shower stalls that compete in beauty and practicality with what you might find in a luxury community for those 55 and older, plenty of home modifications now make it possible to age in place gracefully and stylishly. Kitchens and baths are commonly the most challenging rooms in the house for people, like many seniors, with mobility issues. Updating these rooms can go a long way toward helping you stay in and enjoy your own home for as long as possible. Bathrooms pose safety issues. Falls are one of the leading reasons seniors must go into a nursing home. When renovating your bathroom, focus on the important elements, low-level entryways, accessible grab bars, easy grip faucets and showers with safety screens. Other elements include safer, slipresistant flooring; brighter, more flexible lighting; and safe access to the shower or bathtub.
Walk in showers Stepping in and out of a tub or shower is one of the riskiest times for people with mobility challenges. Appropriately placed grab bars - now available in designer colors and textures - can help improve safety in these high-risk areas. Another option that’s high on safety and style is to replace a current shower or tub with a walk-in shower like those now offered by Premier Care In Bathing, whose walk-in bathtubs have made bathing safer and more convenient for thousands of people with mobility issues.
Home & Garden The walk-in showers are a good option for wheelchair users or in rooms where a fullsize tub is not practical.
Flooring That tile floor that you adored in your 40s can be a slip hazard when you reach your 70s. In fact, any hard bathroom floor surface such as linoleum, vinyl or tile can put you at increased risk of slipping and falling. Carpeting might be a better option, one that is slip resistant and warmer and softer on the feet. Many manufacturers now offer materials that are attractive and able to repel moisture.
Lighting Aging eyes not only need more light to see, they need better quality light, especially at night. Avoid dim lighting; older eyes need several times more light than younger eyes to see well. Increase the amount of light in your bathroom and consider using naturally brighter bulbs like compact fluorescent bulbs, which are also energy-efficient. Be aware of glare, bright lights bouncing off all-white bathroom surfaces can create glare that makes it difficult to see and navigate for older people, especially at night when they may not be fully awake. If your bath is all white, paint the walls a light color in a finish that will help reduce glare. Use area rugs on white floors to help break up the expanse of white and reduce glare. Boomers aging in place will find more options than ever before to do so with style. Safety should be your first concern, but you can also enjoy good style and beautiful design as well. Home & Garden Celebrate a new look for your home in the New Year (ARA) - Each year about 70 percent of Americans make a New Year’s resolution and most soon forget they ever made one. Time for a change? Why not resolve to give your old house a new look in the New Year? Start the new decade with a new attitude about your home’s makeover. Here’s one you can stick to. Many home improvement projects can pay dividends and save energy. For example, in 2010, U.S. tax credits abound for energy-efficient upgrades like windows, doors, insulation, water heaters, roofing and certain appliances. Paint a room to renew it. Apply new interior paint to brighten up your home and brush away the winter blues. Hot colors for 2010 include bright or warm yellows, lavender for bedrooms and slate or charcoal grays to replace tan and beige tones as popular neutrals. Home built decades ago? American homes built before 1978 may include paint containing lead. Lead poisoning can pose a health threat, especially to young children. Contact your local health department for advice on lead paint removal. Front and center. While you’re painting, remember the front door. A fresh coat of paint or polyurethane on a fiberglass or wood entry door can refresh the new look and luster. Consider whether the door still closes properly or if you can feel air leaks around it. If so, it’s time to replace the weatherstripping or the door itself. Choose factory-built entry door systems like those from Pella for added reliability. Adding a storm door can 16 | Elk Grove Monthly
also boost to your entryway’s energy efficiency by helping keep cold air out. Make it easy with prefinished options. Many home improvements, like woodwork, windows and doors can be factory prefinished, saving you time and the hassle of finishing. Pella Windows and Doors offers prefinished products in a variety of prefinished tones. That way you can match your window and door finishes to cabinets, flooring or furniture and enjoy your windows and doors from the moment they’re installed. Add an element of surprise. A touch of the unexpected makes each home unique. So include colors or decor that reflects your personal style. Incorporate color and texture and add privacy with window and patio door treatments between panes of glass. Pella Designer Series windows and patio doors feature optional removable blinds or shades in vibrant colors like garnet, marine, Bordeaux, tomato, charcoal and pewter along with popular neutral tones. Practicality trumps all…especially when it comes to energy-savings. Select the products that fit your renovation style and budget. Choose energy-efficient wood, vinyl or fiberglass windows or doors like Energy Star-qualified options. Ring in the New Year with a new attitude on how to refresh your home inside and out. Cheers to your home.

The kitchen of the future at your fingertips (ARA) - We turn to technology to make many aspects of our lives easier - from traveling with a GPS to staying connected with loved ones via social networking Web sites. It’s no surprise, then, that our kitchens, the most-used room in the home, are becoming increasingly high tech. A study commissioned by a leading kitchen appliance manufacturer showed that a third of respondents spend three to four hours in the kitchen each day, and 20 percent spend five or more hours. The survey also showed that Americans are embracing technologies in this room, with nearly half of the respondents reporting they want a state-of-the-art kitchen. Responding to the demand for technology, manufacturers are offering new gadgets and products designed to make kitchen tasks easier, faster and more energy-efficient: •
Touchscreen technology centers stationed in the kitchen allow users to access stored or online recipes and cooking tips.
Energy-efficient pots shorten cooking time and reduce energy usage by as much as 50 percent.
Home & Garden other activities. An often-overlooked opportunity to incorporate technology lies in the faucet. On average, a family of four touches it 150 times a day - when cooking, cleaning the home, washing our hands or just getting a drink of water.” Delta’s intuitive, touch-activated kitchen faucet offers increased efficiency and helps save water. The Pilar pull-down kitchen faucet with Touch2O Technology can be turned on or off with a simple touch to the spout or handle. You’ll no longer have to use messy hands to operate the faucet, and if your hands are full it’s easier to stop the flow of water in between tasks when it’s not needed. Another innovation that makes Delta pulldown kitchen faucets more convenient and user-friendly is MagnaTite docking, which uses a powerful magnet to keep the pull-down spray wand firmly in place for a cleaner look. Similar in functionality to magnetic closures found on totes and personal electronic cases, the spray head engages with little effort. So what’s next?
Water-powered garbage disposal units are operated by the water pressure in the kitchen and require zero electricity.
Automated pantry systems catalog contents and keep track of what ingredients are running low or need to be replenished.
Rodenbeck said his team is always looking for opportunities to enhance the user experience. Delta recently launched two commercial faucets that use the body’s electrical charge to activate the flow of water.
The kitchen is the hub of the home, where we spend significant chunks of time preparing meals and participating in a host of February 2010 | 19

RON OHTA Baja Burrito
9015 Bruceville Rd As a frequent visitor to Baja Burrito, it’s been easy to overlook a fabulous eatery that deserves to be reviewed. Baja Burrito is family-owned and operated and has been providing top-notch food and service for over a year in Elk Grove. Owners Colin and Martha Saeger are wonderfully friendly. For this visit, a new special was a pair of sopes. Sopes have a circular base made from ground maize, with pinched edges making a convenient minibowl. The sopes were topped with beans, carnitas, cilantro, sour cream, and queso fresco. Queso fresco is a fresh homemade cheese made from milk and the light taste and texture perfectly complemented the sharper flavors of the carnitas and cilantro.
Other specials included pork or chicken tamales or fresh made taquitos. Specials are complemented with rice and beans and a drink. Our favorite time to visit is on Taco Tuesdays. Their soft, warm, fresh corn tortillas are filled with carnitas, onions, and cilantro. Other meats, such are carne asada, chicken, or shrimp are also available, but the hands-down most popular requested meat is the carnitas. The salsa bar also includes an excellent variety of homemade salsas ranging from mild pico de gallo to spicier blends of roasted chiles. Our family always enjoys stopping in at Baja Burrito because we feel like we are coming to visit with good friends!
