Responsibility, Respect, and Religious Neutrality in Our Public Schools

Writing about responsibility in schools is often mistaken for political commentary. That is not the intention. The purpose is far simpler-and far more important. Public schools function best when every member of the community feels valued, respected, and supported. This responsibility belongs to everyone: Boards of Education, administrators, teachers, staff, mental health professionals, students, families, and the wider community. Schools do not exist to avoid difficult conversations. They exist to prepare students for the world they are entering, and that preparation is rooted in recognizing the value of every person in the school community.

The Comfort of Silence

In many districts labeled as "excellent," there is a quiet assumption that serious issues do not exist.

Low numbers of students receiving free or reduced lunch, limited ethnic diversity, and minimal reported incidents can create the appearance of a problem-free environment. Property values remain strong, state oversight is minimal, and the unspoken expectation is clear: don't rock the boat.

Silence is not the same as safety-and it does not show value for the people who rely on the school to protect and nurture them. When incidents of harassment, bullying, or mental health struggles go unreported, it is often not because they do not exist-it is because students and families are afraid to speak. Parents want their children to get through school without conflict. Students learn quickly that drawing attention can come with consequences. Over time, what was once openly discussed becomes something to be avoided altogether.

Responsibility, Respect, and Religious Neutrality in Our Public Schools

As a permanent school social worker with professional district administration certification, I have witnessed firsthand how inaction erodes trust and fails to show the inherent value of each student and family.

When schools don't act, parents stop sharing. When schools believe their community will not tolerate action, silence replaces responsibility. Over time, this silence teaches students and families that raising concerns—about harassment, bullying, mental health, or identity-is risky rather than respected.

What appears on the surface as stability is often fear-driven compliance, and the cost is borne quietly by those who feel least valued.

Responsibility Beyond Compliance

Schools should not wait for a state designation of "needs improvement" before examining their culture. Responsibility in education goes beyond compliance, test scores, and appearances. It requires proactive engagement, honest reflection, and a willingness to address uncomfortable topics while demonstrating that every member of the school community is valued.

Mental health concerns, harassment, and discrimination do not disappear simply because they are not documented. When schools choose avoidance, they miss opportunities to educate, intervene, and affirm the worth of students, staff, and families.

Responsibility, Respect, and Religious Neutrality in Our Public Schools

A Changing World Enters the Classroom

Today's students are growing up amid global conflict, social unrest, and deeply polarized conversations about identity, religion, and belonging. From international wars rooted in ethnicity and land to protests across North America, these realities shape what students see, hear, and internalize-often long before adults realize it. Schools cannot control the world outside their walls, but they can control how they respond inside them. When schools act responsibly, they model respect and value for all people, helping students learn how to do the same.

Education Requires Courage

Avoiding difficult conversations does not protect children. It leaves them unprepared. Schools that embrace responsibility teach students how to think critically, respect differences, and engage with complexity in a civil and thoughtful way-all while affirming the value of each person in the school community.

Even in high-performing districts, challenges exist. Acknowledging them is not a failure-it is leadership. When schools act with responsibility, respect, and courage, they do more than educate-they show every student, staff member, and family that they are seen, heard, and valued. They reduce violence, confront ignorance, enhance understanding, and foster accountability for how we treat one another.

Responsibility, Respect, and Religious Neutrality in Our Public Schools

This is not about politics. It is about responsibility. When leaders dismiss professional expertise, blur church-state boundaries, or allow violent rhetoric, students feel the consequences. The growing public acceptance of extremist symbols-evidenced by recent Nazi memorabilia auctions in small towns-reveals how easily hate can be normalized when moral clarity is lacking.

Schools shouldn’t characterize community intelligence level by their understanding of racism. Schools should seek to educate based on concerns brought to their attention as it is a right for all people to feel safe for each protected class ( including religion and ethnicity) under Federal law. Since 1964 in the workplace, The Dignity for All Students Act “protects all public school students in NYS from harassment or discrimination by other students or adults. The definitions of harassment and discrimination in the law were not intended to be inclusive of the eleven protected classes identified in the Dignity Act.”

Federally protected classes are Race, Color, Religion, Sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, transgender status), National Origin, Age(40+), Disability, and Genetic Information, with additional protections for Veteran Status, Citizenship, and others specifics applying to veteran families.

Public schools must remain safe, inclusive spaces for students of all backgrounds. That requires leadership that condemns violence without exception, values trained professionals, and models respect for human dignity. Our children are watching. What we teach today becomes what they carry forward tomorrow.

WORLD-CLASS CARE, FROM LONG ISLAND, NYC TO

WESTERN NEW YORK

Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) is internationally recognized for its leadership in cancer research and treatment. Less often discussed, but equally important, is its commitment to patients with serious non-cancer conditions, including chronic illnesses such as iron deficiency anemia. That commitment profoundly changed my life.

For more than 12 years, I saw that standard of care up close while my father-in-law was in and out of Sloan. That experience underscored how essential timely diagnosis, continuity, and coordinated care are for patients navigating complex medical conditions.

I later became a patient of Dr. Natalya Krichmar, a Hematology-Oncology specialist affiliated with the Catholic Health System. Her meticulous, compassionate approach exemplified the level of care patients hope for when managing chronic illness.

A pivotal moment came during a cardiology visit with Dr. David A. Goldstein, a cardiologist affiliated with St. Francis Hospital and the Catholic Health System. Recognizing the urgency, he ordered immediate bloodwork and directed me to see this hematologist without delay. By the time I arrived at my appointment, my lab results were already available, allowing treatment to begin right away.

After three consecutive weeks of intravenous iron infusions, about 3x times since 2016, I finally felt like myself again—clearer, stronger, and restored. That experience reinforced the life-changing impact of timely diagnosis and coordinated care.

When I later transitioned my care to Western New York, I found that same excellence at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center under Dr. Michael Krabak. Known for its cancer expertise, Roswell Park delivers the same precision, compassion, and patientcentered care to individuals with non-cancer conditions.

In many ways, Roswell Park is Western New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering—where advanced medicine and humanity come together to treat the whole person, not just the diagnosis.

However,I still return to my cardiologist as he is the kindest and doctor. When you find someone that good it’s hard to switch !

I consider myself very lucky ‘

A NEW WAY TO LOOK AT THE NEW YEAR

A New Way to Look at the NewYear

The start of a new year isn't just about resolutions or bold promises. It's an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reset-personally and professionally.

Before rushing into plans, take time to look ack. Acknowledge what went well, what you're proud of, and how far you've come. Reflection builds confidence and creates a stronger foundation for what's next. Rather than focusing only on goals, set a clear direction. Think about how you want your work and life to feel by the end of the year, then take realistic steps toward that vision. Be intentional about how you show up.Your personal brand—online and offline-should reflect your values, growth, and the impact you want to make.

Strengthen relationships by building genuine connections, listening well, and supporting others. Opportunity often grows from trust and goodwill.

Stay involved and curious. Contributing to groups, projects, or causes builds confidence and opens new learning paths. Growth often comes from learning new skills or perspectives.

Clarify what truly matters to you. Knowing your priorities reduces stress and helps you make better decisions when demands compete. Pay attention to your work life-notice what energizes you and what drains you. Track your wins, no matter how small, as reminders of progress.

Above all, care for emotional wellbeing—yours and others. Sustainable success depends on rest, connection, kindness, and balance. A new year isn't about becoming someone different. It's about becoming more aligned, aware, and balanced.

FLUID RESOLUTIONS BLOG•2026

Resolutions: Growth Doesn't Have a Deadline

As I reflect on an article I was interviewed for a couple of years ago-"It's a NewYear... Stay Inspired to Grow AllYear Long!"one message continues to stand out.If you feel the need to make a change at any time, you can. Growth doesn't require a calendar date.

For some people, the NewYear brings a sense of motivation and momentum. If that timing works for you, go for it. But meaningful change shouldn't feel pressured. When it does, it can be more elpful to approach goals in small, manageable increments throughout the year rather than all at once.

It's also worth acknowledging that holiday energy —and even end-of-year pricing-can be motivating. Sometimes external factors give us the push we need to begin.

Another way to view personal growth is as a fluid, evolving process. When we allow ourselves to grow gradually and respond to what we need in the moment, change becomes more sustainable. We evolve not just in January, but whenever awareness and readiness show up.

Ultimately, resolutions, personal growth, and positive change follow the same path as any form of behavior modification: they take time, practice, and discipline. Progress isn't about perfection-it's about consistency and self-compassion along the way.

Creativity doesn’t vanish so much as it retreats. It slinks into the corners when you're overwhelmed, buried under endless to-do lists, or stuck repeating the same conversations with different names. But it's always there, waiting for you to make the first move. And when you do, it doesn’t just paint your world with richer colors; it recalibrates how you solve problems, communicate ideas, and make meaning out of chaos.

MAKE ROOM FOR BOREDOM AGAIN

You can ’t daydream if you never stop feeding your brain a stream of inputs. Those flashes of inspiration usually show up in the blank spaces, not while you ’ re doom-scrolling through updates or multitasking through lunch. Leave your phone behind during coffee breaks and allow silence to fill the gaps. What feels like boredom at first eventually becomes the mental canvas creativity needs to sketch on.

CHANGE UP YOUR CAREER

Switching careers can feel like a creative rebirth, especially when your current path has grown too narrow to inspire you anymore. If you ’ re interested in technology, earning a degree through an online program will allow you to learn more about how to protect digital systems and open doors to a more dynamic and inventive career. he process also gives you the flexibility to maintain your income while building a new skill set that aligns with your evolving interests If you're drawn to problem-solving and digital puzzles, a cybersecurity degree might be the spark you need to re-engage with learning.

Talk to Strangers Like You're Collecting Stories

You never know who holds the thread that unravels your next idea. Striking up a conversation with someone outside your bubble cracks open neiw cultural textures, experiences, and opinions. Whether it's the barista with the tattoo sleeve or the retired teacher on your commute, ask questions like you ’ re mining for plot twists. These real-world interactions become unexpected springboards for fresh thought in both your life and work.

Revisit a Long-Abandoned Passion

There's often a creative breadcrumb trail in the hobbies you left behind. Maybe it was photography, playing guitar, or even amateur magic tricks. Go back not to reclaim lost time but to remember the way you used to think before success became a measuring stick. These old fascinations carry clues about your authentic creative DNA—the part of you that made things simply because it felt good to do so.

Make Constraints Your Collaborator

Most people think creativity needs wide-open freedom, but it thrives in limitation. Give yourself a writing prompt with three random words, paint using only two colors, or design a meal using five ingredients. Constraints become invisible teammates that nudge you to innovate inside tight boundaries. That same skill transfers directly into solving complex challenges with limited resources in your professional world

Aging:CanItBeDone

Gracefully?

There is a moment—often subtle—when you first notice yourself becoming less tolerant, more easily irritated. You wonder how to talk about it without blaming anyone or calling each other out. Sometimes you joke about it with friends. All of this may feel like new territory.

So, what is aging?

For each person, it is different. For some, aging begins early, influenced by health and overall wellness. For others, it is shaped by what we consider “normal” aging—how old our parents were when they seemed to slow down, when their health began to fail, or when we noticed changes in aunts, uncles, and other relatives. We define our own aging partly by these observations, along with the biology of our DNA. As time goes on, our conversations change. When we gather, we talk about aches and pains. You may realize that all you discussed was who is having surgery or dealing with a new diagnosis. It’s easy to become consumed by this. Some people begin to feel their “age” as early as 40, others at 50, 60, 70, or beyond.

This article is about how to master these changes—no matter how old you are or how old you feel.

I look at my siblings and friends and notice the changes, both within us and around us. We become more aware of loss: people our age passing away, or friends struggling with serious health issues. In response, some of us grow more sincere with one another—expressing love more freely, feeling deeper gratitude. For others, this season may bring more anger, especially when losses go unprocessed or when watching people we love suffer, feels overwhelming.

FeelingBeautiful

Bringing natural-looking beauty back to the injectable industry since 2019. Feel good on the inside and look your best on the outside! Dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid mixed with lidocaine, which are injected into various areas of the skin to improve volume, hydration, and restore facial symmetry. Patients with age spots, sun damage, visible vessels, and rosacea can expect notable improvement in just 1-3 IPL treatments, compared to 4-6 sessions with standard methods. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to brown spots on the face, chest, hands, and other areas. Whether you are concerned about brown or red spots, our IPL treatment can help you achieve your desired results.

Sculptra is a non-surgical injectable treatment that gradually enhances lost facial volume, emphasizing and enhancing your natural beauty. Unlike traditional fillers, Sculptra stimulates your skin’s collagen production, resulting in long-lasting, natural appearance. The benefits of Sculptra develop over time, with a series of treatments suggested to reach optimal results. You’ll notice smoother skin and a refreshed look that can last for up to 2 years.

PRP is a natural therapy using your blood's growth factors to rejuvenate and restore your skin, hair, and overall appearance. A small blood sample is drawn, processed to isolate platelet-rich plasma, and then applied or injected into targeted areas. PRP works well with treatments like microneedling for even better outcomes. It is safe, minimally invasive, and has little to no downtime, providing a natural way to achieve striking results while enhancing your natural beauty.https://www.beautyfx716.com/

Question

“AskMarcy”

Question from Kay in Peru New York … Dear Marcy How do I handle this girl in my HS who is spreading rumors about me My friends keep telling me what she says! I’ m getting mad!

Response

Hi Kay

If rumors are spreading, start by asking friends not to repeat what they're hearing—if someone has something to say, they should say it to you directly Remember that gossip changes as it passes from person to person, so what you're hearing may not be accurate. If you feel safe, you can calmly ask the person about it in a public place like the hallway or with a counselor present. If that feels uncomfortable, talk to a guidance counselor or social worker and ask for help addressing it. Reaching out to an adult is a smart and responsible step. Thank you for sharing and good luck - Marcy
