HELPING YOU FIND THE RIGHT MARINA

Finding the perfect place to berth your new boat is always a big decision so we have put together some things to consider when picking a new marina. If you are looking for a new berth, we have access to some broker-only deals with some of the main marina operators featured below, so give us a call and let us help you find your new boat her new home.

Wherever you are thinking of keeping your new boat, either UK or Overseas, many of the key decisions will be the same: how close to home do you want to be, or how close to an airport if abroad? Are you looking for a vibrant location or somewhere peaceful to relax? Are the yard services on site adequate to support you and the boat?

For many people, finding a happy medium of all these points will be key so before you start exploring marinas, always consider:

• Distance from home/airport

• Tidal/non-tidal

• Services on site: engineers, riggers, shops, bars etc.

• Provision of fuel and pump-out facilities

• Lift-out and hard standing for the winter

• Reliable electrical supply

Whilst this is not an exhaustive list it should then help narrow down a shortlist to investigate in more detail.

It is always worth trying to visit a new marina and have a walk around, especially if it is not one you know well, to get a good feel for it. In Hamble, for example, our Head Office is located in Hamble Point Marina at the mouth of the River Hamble. This gives access to Southampton Water and the Solent within 15 minutes, ideal for those who want to get on their boat and head straight out on the water.

As one of the MDL Group Marinas, the 230 berth marina has a great selection of services on site along with plentiful hard standing and a 75t hoist. There is also a restaurant and bar on site and it is only a 20 minute walk to Hamble Village.

As a contrast, for those seeking a little more tranquillity, Mercury Yacht Harbour further up the River Hamble is hard to beat – away from the busy village centre and surrounded by countryside, the marina offers a much more laid-back location despite being slightly bigger than Hamble Point. The trade-off is of course a slightly longer motor down the river to get to the Solent but on a beautiful sunny morning, it doesn’t feel too arduous.

AN OWNER’S PERSPECTIVE

We asked Tim, owner of Hanse 460 ‘Mahana’ to share his extensive boat-buying experience, and any advice he has for those embarking on this adventure themselves.

Tell us about your sailing background. What got you into sailing, where have you sailed, what do you enjoy about it?

The first time I set foot on a yacht was an invite to a corporate day at Cowes Week. I’d never sailed before and had no interest to do so. I spent the day in the Solent with all the other corporate guests throwing up in a Force 9. At the end of that day all the others got off the yacht saying they will never get on a yacht again – I went home grinning and knew I had to have my own yacht. So, my background, before buying my first yacht was absolutely zero. I am now some 10,000 miles into my log book – with 99% of that being solo – and all of it in the North Sea and the English Channel.

What boats have you owned to date?

I took delivery of my first yacht (a new Hanse 385) in 2013. I then purchased a new Hanse 458 and have just taken delivery of my third new Hanse, my pride and joy, the Hanse 460. So in 10 years I’ve had three new Hanse yachts.

What attracted you to the Hanse range initially?

Before deciding on the Hanse 385 as my first yacht, I can remember doing the rounds and test sails with all the major modern production yacht manufacturers. I instantly fell in love with the modern interior design of the Hanse and what appeared to me to be the simplicity of sailing and solid feel to them. Remember at the time of placing the order for the 385 I had no idea how to sail, so I wanted a yacht that would be easy to sail, solid build, modern lines and a clean apartment style interior. Hanse ticked all boxes – and the other brands didn’t. There was something else which was important to me – being a sailing virgin – and that was the ‘feeling’ I got from the firm I was buying from. What support would I get? You guys at Hanse / Inspiration Marine trumped all the others. Three Hanse yachts later, I know I made the right decision on the 385 some 10 years ago.

42 | www.inspirationmarine.co.uk

You have just taken delivery of a new Hanse 460, your third Hanse – tell us a bit about what attracted you to that model?

Twin head sails, the hard top, solar, lithium, living space and ease of sailing. The permanently rigged twin head sails really caught my eye. I’d wanted this set up for a long time. And with ability to hoist a third downwind sail – you have every angle covered. I expected the hard top would transform the cockpit and it has literally doubled the usable space in all weather, at anchor or in a marina. The hard top is fully loaded with solar as I wanted to be off grid.

Having now spent some time at the helm with her, what are your first impressions?

She is so fast! SOG is constantly above the standard specifications. The ease of sailing her single handed – well I guess that was no surprise to me having had the 385 and the 458 previously. All the things that attracted me to the 460 (the twin head sails are a dream) the cockpit with the hard top transforms the yacht. And as for that solar, you can literally throw the shore power cable away. I’ve not connected her to shore power since taking delivery. Oh and one last thing –she is solid – you feel super safe.

Do you have any advice or guidance for those looking to buy a new boat?

Do the rounds, do the test sails, do all of that. But remember when you settle on your preferred brand and model, you are not just buying a new yacht. Especially if it’s your first yacht, remember you are buying the support, advice and time of the dealer supplying it. None of that less tangible stuff gets listed in any contract, so follow your gut and go with the dealers you sense will be there for you years after hand over day. I’d suggest getting that bit right is as important as the yacht itself. You guys at Hanse gave me that feeling 10 years ago – and three yachts in I reckon my gut was right about you and your team.

Finally, what are your sailing plans for you and ‘Mahana’?

Kick around the English Channel this season (work keeps getting in the way!). Next year I should be clear from the shackles of work, then head south until the butter melts and see where I end up. That’s the current plan anyway – unless you ruin it by launching another faster, sexier Hanse that I have to come back and buy!

MARINE FINANCE

If you are considering a new or used boat purchase, the method of funding the purchase will certainly be a consideration. Marine finance is available on new and used vessels and can be surprisingly flexible.

Marine mortgages and loans overview: How do they work?

Similar to a house mortgage, you will own the boat and the lender will place a charge on the boat via the MCA Ships Registry. The boat will need to be Part 1 Registered, which is generally undertaken by the lender directly with the MCA – in a nutshell, it is the Land Registry equivalent for boats.

What terms are available and are the terms flexible?

Loan terms are normally available between 4 – 15 years depending on the price and age of the boat you are considering, and can be issued in GBP or Euros.

CGI Finance offer flexible loans and allow you to inject lump sum payments at any time or settle in full without penalty at any stage. Loan to value is typically 70% of the purchase price of the boat, but you can always choose to have lower LTVs should you prefer.

When are the funds released from the lender?

For a new boat, the funds will be requested at the point the boat is completed so any deposits required in advance of this will still need to be funded. If you are buying a used boat through our Yacht Brokerage, the drawdown date will be as close to the completion of the sale process as possible.

What happens when we want to sell or change boats?

As the finance is secured on the vessel, it is vital that it is settled as part of any sale process and if you are using our Yacht Brokerage to handle the sale, then we will undertake this on your behalf. The Broker will, with your permission, contact the lender to obtain a settlement figure and ensure the finance is cleared as part of the sale, giving the new owner peace of mind, and you confidence, that the finance has all been cleared correctly prior to completion.

We are pleased to offer our clients the opportunity to have a no-obligation discussion with CGI Finance and their team of experienced professionals to establish if marine finance is the right choice for you.

INSURANCE

With over twenty years of experience insuring all sorts of boats all over the world, Dean Shaw from Gallagher Marine Insurance gave us his thoughts on some key areas to consider when insuring your boat.

Valuation Basis

You should insure your total purchase price. ‘Agreed-value’ policies (the best ones) pay the ‘agreed-value’ in the event of total loss; this figure needs to be based on your financial involvement in the boat. Happily, insurers are wise to the recent rise in boat prices and have come up with a number of options to bridge the gap between purchase price and replacement cost by the time she’s delivered.

Lithium Batteries

Insurers are comfortable with Lithium battery systems fitted by the manufacturer during build or retro-fitted by professional marine electricians – if retro-fitting, your insurer may ask for a copy of the final invoice. Lithium outboards are also no problem provided the manufacturers’ instructions are followed, but some Lithium powered water-toys will attract special terms and conditions.

Rigging Inspections

As rigging technology has improved, insurers are reluctant to apply hard-and-fast rules where rigging is concerned. New yachts are exempt from rig inspections but insurers are taking a more risk-specific approach; carbon rigs will need inspecting much more regularly than their aluminium brethren – a transAtlantic and/or serious racing campaign may also be a trigger.

Racing and Events

Many insurers will cover Round the Island Race entry without additional premium. However, reflecting a poor general claims experience, premium rates for competitive racing and off-shore events have risen significantly.

Underwater Damage

For motorboat owners the most likely big claim is underwater damage. There’s all sorts of flotsam out there; even the most experienced owner can’t beat some barely visible detritus at 30 knots. However, on this crucial issue not all insurance policies are made equal. Some apply increased excesses for underwater gear claims, others reduce settlement amounts in line with the boat’s age – some insurers do both. Be sure to check this with your broker.

Top Tips:

• Sailors tend to benefit from lower premium rates – they tend to have slower accidents!

• Motorboat owners should pay attention to how underwater gear claims are handled/settled and compare the policies on offer.

• ‘All-risks’ and ‘agreed-value’ is the best cover and will cost a bit more. Whilst gathering quotes be aware of any that look a lot cheaper than the rest as there is normally a reason.

• Keep all your purchase and service receipts to be able to prove maintenance history.

SAILING IN SCOTLAND

DISCOVER THE FIRTH OF CLYDE

From charming coastal towns to world-class marinas, the Firth of Clyde offers a range of attractions and experiences for both seasoned sailors and those new to the sport.

One of the major attractions of the Firth of Clyde is its breathtaking natural beauty. The waters are surrounded by rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and picturesque islands, making it a paradise for sailors seeking stunning vistas and peaceful anchorages. Arran, the largest island in the Firth of Clyde, is a popular sailing destination. Its dramatic mountains, ancient castles, and charming villages provide a captivating backdrop for any sailing adventure.

The Firth of Clyde is also home to several excellent marinas, catering to the needs of sailors. If you are considering a location to base yourself from, Kip Marina is only 45 minutes from Glasgow Airport with great road and rail links. The marina offers excellent facilities, including a well-stocked chandlery, and you will receive a warm welcome from Ian, the Marina Master and his team.

Sailing events are a prominent feature of the Firth of Clyde’s maritime calendar. One of the most prestigious events is the Scottish

Series, an annual regatta that attracts sailors from across the UK and beyond. Held in May, this thrilling competition showcases the best racing in the Firth of Clyde. The event not only offers exciting sailing but also provides a vibrant social scene, with festivities and celebrations lasting throughout the weekend in the beautiful village of Tarbert.

Another popular event is the Fife Regatta, dedicated to preserving and celebrating classic yachts designed by the renowned Scottish boatbuilder William Fife. Held every few years, the regatta brings together a striking fleet of historic and beautiful vessels, providing a unique opportunity to witness the grace and elegance of these timeless yachts.

While exploring the Firth of Clyde, sailors should not miss the intriguing attraction known as the Sugar Boat (inset left). The Sugar Boat is a historic wreck that has become a popular diving and snorkelling site. This ship was originally a sugarcarrying vessel that sank in the early 1970s, and over time it has transformed into an artificial reef teeming with marine life. Divers can explore the wreck, discovering its hidden nooks and crannies, and observe the vibrant underwater ecosystem that has taken root.

With its perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and discovery the Firth of Clyde promises to leave you longing to return time and time again.
