or Guillermo del Toro, iT all sTarTs wiTh The eye—or, more accurately, the lens. his keen vision processes everything, judging it, molding it to his intellectual and creative purpose, turning it to his interests and obsessions, exquisite and grotesque, and crafting it into an endless procession of indelible, unique images—some on the world stage, some utterly private. most private of all are his phenomenal notebooks, full of pointed observations, random thoughts, sketches from life, and wondrous drawings. at first glance, they appear to resemble those of another polymath, leonardo da Vinci. a true modern renaissance man with stunning capacity, vast interests, and endless enthusiasm, Guillermo del Toro invites such a comparison. like leonardo, Guillermo is an artist with wide interests and talents who can be hired but not bought and who approaches the way he lives with a passionate aesthetic sense. “one of the biggest lessons leonardo leaves for all creators is that man is the work of art,” notes Guillermo. “obviously, the Mona Lisa is a masterpiece. The Vitruvian man, The Last Supper—both masterpieces. we can all agree on that. But leonardo—the man, the anatomist, the designer, the architect, the scientist—is the real masterpiece. He is his ultimate creation. so live well. Be curious and hungry and always in awe of the world.” leonardo is far from the only titan who inspires Guillermo del Toro in his quest to create himself. “as with da Vinci, mark Twain is the work of art. it’s not the isolated novels, or stories, or aphorisms. it’s the man. in the same way, in the tragic sense, that is true of oscar wilde or Truman Capote—both of whom, i believe, had a tragic imbalance between their artistic output and their lives as socialites.” From each of his many guides, Guillermo selects bits and pieces, playing the role of dr. Frankenstein and the monster both, becoming the scientist who fashions himself into something simultaneously shocking and beautiful. he combines the darkness of lovecraft, the formalism of hitchcock, the wildness of Fellini. his distinct palette is equal parts richard Corben, Johannes Vermeer, edvard munch, and his beloved symbolists—Félicien rops, odilon redon, Carlos schwabe, and arnold Böcklin. Guillermo is an omnivore, or more accurately, a creature who absorbs everything that draws his interest and transmutes it into something all his own. Through his sorcery we see the world transformed. his bleak and heartening vision imprints us as

n Shrek Forever After , the fourth and final chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s awardwinning series, Shrek longs for the old days when he was a lone, carefree ogre. In a moment of self-doubt, the conniving Rumpelstiltskin takes advantage of the vulnerable ogre by enticing him to sign an enchanted contract that thrusts Shrek into an alternate reality where ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king, and Princess Fiona doesn’t even know Shrek exists! This exclusive art book goes behind the gates at DreamWorks Animation to show how the world of Far Far Away and its beloved fairytale inhabitants were reinvented for Shrek Forever After. Included are over four hundred pieces of concept art, storyboards, character studies, and exclusive interviews with the production team that brought Shrek to the big screen in this exciting end to the enduring Shrek saga.

cousins, the comparatively miniature Magic Eggs that children eventually find on Easter. Besides dealing with intruders, the Sentinels also provide more direct protection to their smaller cousins by storing up to three hundred of the tiny eggs in their hollow areas. “They are giant, majestic beings made of rock that Bunny brings to life,” adds Hanenberger. "He has the gift of life and can wake them up to help him with his Easter tasks.” The second type of egg, the elaborately decorated Magic Eggs were designed to be little symbols of hope. To communicate this fresh and innocent feeling visually, Woonyoung Jung and the rest of the art team worked hard to differentiate their Easter designs from the typical holiday ephemera one will encounter each year in drugstores and stationery shops. “We looked at a lot of indigenous Central American art and came up with shapes that were inspired by organic material in the environment,” says Hanenberger. “All their patterns and shapes are inspired by leaves and vines. These aren’t supposed to be the eggs we see in stores around Easter. These are all handcrafted, natural eggs made by Mother Nature. That’s why they also get a multicolored tie-dyed look after they float in the creeks.”

michael Shannon plays General Zod, Man of Steel’s chief antagonist. Leader of Krypton’s military guild, Zod is a would-be revolutionary who learned to value scientific discovery as one of Jor-el’s closest friends. On Man of Steel, Shannon channeled Zod’s formidable strength through his words and actions, convinced that there was a degree of rightness behind the character’s cause. “I’m not a Kryptonian,” he points out. “But if earth was in such dire straits as Krypton, what side would you take? How would you feel about it? What would you try to do to stop it from happening? There are some people, like Jor-el, that try and deal with these circumstances in a scientific, compassionate manner. and there are some people that deal with it by force.” as Christopher nolan and David Goyer developed the Man of Steel story, they established the class structures of Krypton and the societal pressures that would drive men like Zod to mutiny. “We talked a lot about Krypton as a dying civilization,” he says. “There are reasons why Krypton has failed. They

have a controlled population, and a caste system that has developed.” although Zod sees value in the programmed roles of Krypton’s castes, he has no patience for the outmoded constraints of the Kryptonian ruling Council. Debbie Snyder sees the rationality behind Zod’s ruthlessness, pointing out that a sneering villain would have felt empty and false. “Zod’s not wrong,” she says. “If the shoe’s on the other foot, if you had the chance to save your entire people, you’d have to take it. When you’re playing for keeps, when it’s the end of your race, there are no rules.” Like Jor-el, Zod hopes to initiate the rebirth of his dying world. However, Jor-el knew Krypton’s case was terminal and sent his only son to earth in an act of hope. Zod was blindsided by the planet’s destruction and has no sentimental attachment to the earthlings he discovers. If billions of humans need to die to make earth into a new Krypton, he’s comfortable with the collateral damage. Debbie Snyder also points out an interesting wrinkle in the relationship between Zod and Clark Kent, whom Zod would have called Kal-el. “In their culture, [Zod] could have raised Clark,”

MAN OF STEEL Inside the Legendary World of Superman By Daniel Wallace Foreword by Christopher Nolan Introduction by Zack Snyder

$45.00 • ISBN: 978-1-60887-181-0 Hardcover • 9.25 x 11 • 184 pages

Introduction ZacK Snyder THe SInGLe pOInT aT WHICH everything we know and everything we question exist in one place; the ultimate crossroads in the journey of discovering the true meaning of “self”; the collision point of science and religion, tangible and ethereal, physical and philosophical; the place where a question that may never truly have an answer can be embodied in a singular character— in many ways, that is the why of Superman. In my mind, the coolest part about the character of Kal-el/ Clark Kent is that his alien origins, combined with his Smallville upbringing, simultaneously make him entirely relatable and completely mysterious. This duality allows us to look at ourselves through the prism of Clark, embracing that which we understand and forcing us to acknowledge and accept that which we don’t yet comprehend. although the challenges facing Clark may be much more interplanetary than our own, the reality is that those sometimes overwhelming difficulties we each struggle to reconcile as we grow—especially throughout our youth—often feel just as immense as being from another planet.

Seventy-five years ago, Kandor and Kansas collided, giving birth to one of the most storied characters of all time—Superman—a single character who calls into question everything we believe. Whether it is the belief that we humans are the apex of an evolutionary process, the pinnacle of God’s creation, or anything else along the complex spectrum where science and theisms grapple for space, Superman challenges all of those ideas to their core. He forces us to look at ourselves as individuals, and mankind as a whole, through the filter of a being who looks very much like us but has the physical strength and abilities of a god. Yet, despite his corporeal strengths he is not omniscient, and therefore must venture out into the world on his own journey of self-discovery. no more able to see the future than any of us, and in many ways much less aware of his past than most, he is in essence a lost god. a deity forced to walk the earth alone, seeking his own personal truth while inadvertently calling into question the very truths the rest of mankind cling to so tightly. That was the challenge that I found most interesting when I decided to take on Man of Steel. I was enthralled by the amazing opportunity to place this helplessly divine figure firmly in our imperfect world. It was a chance to tell the complicated story of a struggling savior, a reluctant messiah, in a modern way. an opportunity to carefully deconstruct the classic godlike character, who we have often perceived as aspirational but also distant and divine at times. allowing the audience to walk alongside Clark during his formative years—matching stride with him as a child, a teen, and ultimately a young man—creates a bond that perseveres even as that man becomes mythological in stature. That initial kinship is what lets us as humans experience the transformative process of the character from an incredibly close proximity, ultimately helping us to both understand and relate to the evolution of Clark Kent into Superman. making Man of Steel has been an amazing journey. as a filmmaker, I consider it an honor to have the opportunity to lovingly deconstruct and reassemble such a beloved character and rich imaginative world. I’m thrilled to have been able to immerse myself in seventy-five years of legend and lore, and I am now excited to share with you my own journey in building upon the already mythological world of Superman.

THE SUIT

If you’re working with Superman, you’ve got to start with the suit. But how can you completely reinvent one of the classics of costume design? For Zack Snyder, it was an easy answer: You don’t. Snyder saw no need to toss out the fundamentals, even as designers brought him ideas that veered into blue jeans and casual street clothes. In Snyder’s mind’s eye, the key elements remained: primary colors of red, yellow, and blue; a trim silhouette defined by a barrel chest and a hanging cape; high boots; and a triangular chest emblem inscribed with the familiar letter S. One thing didn’t survive, however. as Snyder notes, a big reason why the “underwear on the outside” look no longer seems fresh is the fact that it dates from the nineteenth century. “Strong men [would] have a flesh-colored leotard on,” he explains. “Then they’d put the underwear over it, to make it look like all [they] had on was underwear. That’s basically where Superman comes from; the reason why his underwear is on the outside of his pants is because it’s a leftover from victorian-era strong men. I couldn’t make it consistent with the world we were creating.” With that minor tweak in place, costuming could begin in earnest. “We interviewed a number of costume designers and had boiled it down to two,” Charles roven explains. “Zack had worked with michael Wilkinson on Sucker Punch and Watchmen, but michael wasn’t immediately available. James acheson was and he was fantastic, and came up with a significant portion of the designs for Man of Steel, preliminary designs for the Kryptonian armor, and the whole concept of the [chest] glyph being both a family symbol and a Kryptonian symbol. and when for personal reasons he suddenly had to leave the show, fortunately michael Wilkinson had become available.” For Snyder, interpreting the S symbol was like paging through an illuminated manuscript, an act deserving both reverence and care. Superman’s insignia has gone through many variations over the decades, but Snyder found himself drawn to the version Superman wore during World War II, which featured graceful lines resembling art nouveau. “I like to draw on that [era] as much as I can, because I feel he was born again after World War II,” explains Snyder. “He came to represent the american fighting machine and the way america exported its morality to the world. I was drawn to that, and I wanted to get back to a slightly more elegant and more graphically sophisticated S.” theSe PageS: On

SUPERNATURAL, THE TELEVISION SERIES The Roads Not Taken By Tim Waggoner

SAM STEPPED FORWARD AND SHOVED open the door, and the brothers

stepped outside into the cold night air. “Watch out,” Sam said. “The ground’s icy out here.” The exit opened onto a side parking lot. All the spaces were taken thanks to the conference, and the lot was washed in the bluewhite glow of fluorescent lights. It wasn’t even seven o’clock yet, but it got dark early this time of year, and the sky overhead was a starless black void. A woman’s scream cut through the air like a knife, and the brothers drew their weapons and started running toward the sound. Chris had walked toward the rear of the hotel, and they found her standing with her back against one of the metal light poles, gazing with horror at a malformed creature crouched in front of her. Sam had seen too many real monsters over the years to be fooled by a costume, and he could tell at a glance that this creature—whatever the hell it was—was the real thing. It looked like a shadow come to life, limbs overlong and distorted, with no discernible features save for a suggestion of a mouth, a blurry slash across the bottom of its face with sharp white teeth, and a splash of red that might have been a tongue. Its eyes were its most striking feature, burning with a yellow-green light so intense that it reflected off Chris’s black leather outfit.

Her face was pale, and she shook as if in the throes of an epileptic fit, her chest rising and falling rapidly. “I’ve seen that thing before,” Sam said. “Or something a lot like it.” “Me, too,” Dean said. “It looks like a creature from one of Chris’s paintings.” Sam had seen her work displayed on her Web site and printed in the conference program. While the thing menacing her didn’t appear to resemble any one particular painting, its overall look was definitely, well, Matusesque. The brothers leveled their weapons and took aim at the creature. “Hey, Bright Eyes!” Dean called out. “You mind stepping away from the hottie?” The shadow-monster’s head swiveled in their direction, and as Sam felt its attention fall on them, a cold surge of panic washed through him, and his pulse started racing. “It’s a fear-projector,” Sam said through gritted teeth. “No kidding.” Dean’s voice was strained, and Sam knew he was fighting panic as well. “Chris said it did something like this the other night, but . . . but from what she said, it was nowhere near as strong as this.” “Your heart pounding?” Sam asked. “Faster than a heavy metal guitar solo.” Dean grunted and placed his hand on his chest. “Starting to hurt, too.” The shadow-monster turned away from Chris, and she slumped to the ground and gasped for air. Whatever fear-casting power the creature wielded, it had clearly stopped using it on her and trained its full force on them. “Now we know what . . .” Sam grimaced as pain lanced down his left arm, “what caused all those heart attacks.” The creature started toward them, moving with an eerie liquid grace, its head swaying from side to side like a serpent’s. Sam felt the pressure in his chest increasing as the monster drew closer, and he wanted to squeeze the gun’s trigger, but his hand was shaking so badly that he feared his shot would go wild. He was so petrified that he couldn’t turn his head to look at

Of all of the Great Evils, it is much to our misfortune that we know the most about the Lord of Terror, Al’Diabolos, known more widely as Diablo.

Diablo II, the recurring character of Deckard 2013 BRONZE

Publishers West Design Award

He is the root of all fears buried deep within mortal minds. He is the nightmare that awakens us, sweating in the dark. He is an entity of pure malevolence and depthless evil. He has plagued Sanctuary on several occasions and tormented mortals time and again, more often than any of his foul brethren. Despite the fact that age as we know it does not seem to apply to the Lords of Hell, Diablo is generally considered to be the youngest of the Three. It may also seem odd to assign positive traits to a demon; nonetheless, it is said that Diablo is the most creative and farsighted of his brothers, perhaps of all of the Evils. Many claim that Mephisto is the most intelligent, but intelligence has as many facets as does evil.

Cain delivered quests, accompanied the brave

Diablo is calm, cunning, and patient, and best understood when we view all his actions as attempts to instill terror in those around him. Consider the components of terror: a mix of fear, shock, and utter hopelessness. Perhaps Diablo’s most insidious power is the ability to cast his influence deep in the minds of his victims and latch upon their greatest, most crippling fears, then to apply that knowledge and, in so doing, use a person’s own worst fears against them.

adventurer, and, as the last of the Horadrim,

As perverse as it may sound, Diablo sees himself as an artist of terror. I can attest that when I was subjected to Diablo’s evil, it seemed to me as if he derived from it the pleasure that an artist takes in his work. Perhaps he sees each of us as a canvas.

Diablo knows that conquest comes when enemies panic and turn their backs to their fears, rather than face them. However—and this is an important concept to grasp—Diablo does not acquire his satisfaction from conquest itself, as perhaps Mephisto might. Diablo feeds on the terror that precedes the conquest. To him, the fear a victim has is a greater reward than the pain they suffer when they are actually tortured. With this perspective on Diablo’s nature, it remains now for us to describe his Realm of Terror within the Burning Hells.

t was a different age, a time when record companies allowed their artists the freedom to fail, betting that soon they would hit the style and sound that would bring the world to them. In this now-forgotten spirit, Deram Records signed David Bowie and allowed him free rein in the studio. As a result, he did not make an album in 1967. Instead he made a musical and committed it to vinyl. He dreamt up a succession of characters and set their lives to brass, strings, penny whistles, every instrument it would seem except electric guitar. And this in the year of Jimi Hendrix... Bowie wrote songs about children, bitter retired soldiers, and an ‘Uncle Arthur’; he wrote about the ‘Maid Of Bond Street’, the ‘Little Bombardier’ and ‘Silly Boy Blue’. Then he cast his characters against a backdrop of theatrical riffs and melodies inspired by traditional British music hall. The result is an album out of time, out of place, but simultaneously startling. It is the kind of album a major musician might make once they’ve earned an audience and been allowed one album – and one album only – to indulge themselves. It is not, usually, the record of a young man on the make in the year of 1967, a year that saw massive album releases by Pink Floyd, Traffic, Captain Beefheart, Procol Harum, Jimi Hendrix, Tim Buckley, The Byrds, The Small Faces, Mothers Of Invention, and The Doors; the year, in other words, of LSD, psychedelic fashions and freak-outs. Intriguingly, Bowie had no interest in taking the easy road. Rather, he was expressing a unique style and he chose to do so in the year of Sgt. Pepper. Later, he said:

everal years back, Johnny Depp’s longtime collaborator Tim Burton famously called his sidekick “a character actor in a leading man’s body.” The description is so trenchant that it’s tempting to suggest that a Johnny Depp book containing just those eight words

alongside a photographic history of the actor’s career would be a respectable undertaking. Hopefully, however, there is something more to be gleaned from this retrospective of Depp’s cinematic works. So what can one hope to learn about Johnny Depp? It’s fair to say that we have never seen Depp’s like before—this is a film star who has repeatedly shown himself capable of turning mainstream

films into global blockbusters, but who still seems unwilling to use these hit movies as career building blocks in any conventional manner. Whatever one thinks of Johnny Depp professionally

or personally, it’s virtually impossible to imagine him giving a second thought to the kind of cynical strategizing that sees so many actors methodically trading off big-budget roles with parts in worthy independent projects. 11

fter the spiritual high-colonic that was John Waters’ Cry-Baby, Johnny Depp moved on to work with a maverick director of a different stripe; a man who

would give Depp the most important role of his career and who’d end up, in the eyes of the moviegoing public, almost umbilically connected to the actor. The auteur in question is, of course, Tim Burton, whom Depp first encountered at an April 1989 meeting at the Bel Age Hotel in Los Angeles. The director had seen Depp on 21 Jump Street, but the actor knew very little about the man who’d just created the global marketing juggernaut known as Batman. Nonetheless, the two of them apparently hit it off instantly, going on to forge the kind of long-term working relationship that’s rarely seen in modern-day Hollywood. In his foreword to the Tim Burton interview compendium Burton on Burton, Depp explains that “Tim need do nothing

his initial reaction to the version of the Edward Scissorhands screenplay he got from his agent in late 1989. “I read the script instantly and wept like a newborn,” wrote Depp. But not only did it take a great deal of time and effort to finally get a Scissorhands script to Depp’s door; at one point it looked as though that same script might end up languishing in a drawer indefinitely. Tim Burton made his directorial debut in 1985 with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, a mildly surreal comedy based on a successful kids’ TV series that was known for keeping adult viewers amused with regular hints of camp and sexual innuendo; the movie adaptation of Pee-wee—starring Paul Reubens as the titular, bow-tied man-child—was shot for only $6 million, and went on to earn $40 million domestically for Warner Bros. Burton’s follow-up film, Beetlejuice, another Warner production, turned a modest budget of $15 million into $75 million worth of business

What was it like to serve in Afghanistan? That is the question civilians often ask returning servicemembers of the armed forces. Afghanistan: On the Bounce brilliantly conveys the full range of the troops’ experiences—on patrol, in combat, in the chow line, and in religious services—through photographs, stories, diagrams, and removable ephemera. Tannenbaum’s photographs captured many intimate moments between the two; they portray a couple deeply in love and remarkably at home in front of the camera. This bittersweet collection is both a celebration of one of our greatest artists and a testament to an everlasting love affair.

$16.99 Pink lightning crashed through the forest and across the meadow—following the screams was easy. Soon Stella found what she was looking for. It was Matilda. “Oh, woe is me. Woe is me. This is a disaster! A disaster I tell you!” “Stop squawking. Help is here,” Stella said. Only then did Stella notice that the others had arrived on the scene as well. Bubbles twittered to Matilda sympathetically until Red moved him aside. “If this is an emergency, the baby chicks need to stay out of the way.” Stella wondered if Red meant her too. If he did, Stella had no intention of obeying.

Red ordered Matilda to tell him what was going on. “Everything is ruined,” Matilda moaned. “My power has been stolen.” “What do you mean?” Red snapped. “My amulet of power is missing. My jade egg. Without it, I can’t do anything.” “And this is supposed to be an emergency?” Red asked, but everyone could see that Matilda was serious, she looked like a wet rag. “I can help Matilda guard the eggs,” Stella said. “I’m not scared and I...” “Out of the question,” Red said, snorting. “You just blow your bubbles and try to keep out of the way.” Who did that arrogant red rooster think he was! Stella was trembling with rage, a lit firecracker ready to explode. However, Red didn’t pay her any mind.
