oldly reinterpreting an age-old artistic style of painting, this beautiful edition of Celestial Gallery showcases intricately rendered Tibetan-style mandalas, reproduced from a precious collection of magnificent scroll paintings. Master painter Romio Shrestha and his team of artisan monks have rendered Nepalese contemporary versions of deities such as White Tara, the Medicine Buddha, the Dakini mandala and other traditional Buddhist iconography in powerful detail and vibrant colors.

* Romio Shrestha comes from a long line of Himalayan visionaries who see art as the revelation of transpersonal truths, not of the individual ego. Celestial Gallery invites the viewer into a world where dormant spiritual qualities are fully manifest. As we gaze upon these extraordinary paintings, we are transported into the innermost reaches of the psyche—a place in which anything is possible.

The Buddha’s message, beautifully echoed in the visionary thangka paintings of Shrestha, speaks to the universal desire for a sense of love, completion, and connectedness with the world around us. Presented in new contexts unconstrained by religious and artistic convention, Celestial Gallery offers an opportunity for a fresh awakening to the spirit of the tradition as it pushes the boundaries in our world today.

We are pleased to include four of Romio Shrestha’s contemporary thangkas for inclusion in the British Museum collection. We believe that these thangkas well represent the artistic activity in the Kathmandu valley in the latter part of the 20th century.

In the tradition of Celestial Gallery and Goddesses of the Celestial Gallery, Romio Shrestha’s latest art book gathers striking Tibetan-style mandala paintings featuring the Buddha. These hauntingly powerful paintings depict the life of the deity in eloquent detail and render postmodern interpretations of an age-old Tibetan artistic tradition in which images are painstakingly created using malachite, lapis, and marigolds, and painted at times with three hairs of a cat’s tail. These exquisite portrayals of the celestial spheres, known as mandalas, invite viewers to meditate on the Buddha’s message of love, completion, and connectedness. Also available in a lavishly illustrated oversize edition.

“A great and momentous event.” —His Holiness the Dalai Lama “A valuable addition to libraries not only for Hindu scholars but throughout the world.” —Karan Singh, Member of Parliament

History of the IHRF Encyclopedia In August 1987, a senior group of scholars and spiritual leaders from across the United States and India gathered to discuss the preservation of the rich and diverse body of knowledge and culture known as Hinduism. The leaders shared their concerns for the way Hinduism was being presented in existing textbooks to schools, universities, and colleges throughout the West. They lamented the lack of a dependable reference on authentic Hinduism and acknowledged that not only the non-Hindu public but also Hindu youths raised and educated in the West confronted misconceptions, misinformation, and prejudice about their religious history. In many cases, Hindu parents viewed Hinduism as a family ritual and were unable to explain its meaning or significance. Conversation shifted to the idea that a major reference work should be created that would embody authentic knowledge as had been done by the New Catholic Encyclopedia and the Encyclopedia of Judaica. The spiritual leaders pointed out that the government of Sri Lanka was preparing an Encyclopedia of Buddhism and the Turkish government had brought out the Turkish version of Encyclopedia of Islam. Punjabi University in Patiala was preparing the Encyclopedia of Sikhism. Yet the Hindu tradition, one of the oldest, largest, and most influential religions on Earth, with more than 7,000 years of history and prehistory, did not have a comprehensive encyclopedia.

Encyclopedia of Hinduism For educators, the general public, and anyone looking for definitive, engaging, and reliable information about Hinduism, this is the most comprehensive and authoritative single source in the world. The India Heritage Research Foundation (IHRF) Encyclopedia of Hinduism delivers depth, breadth, and unsurpassed scholarship with fascinating photos, illustrations, and art. Readers can access quick facts or immerse themselves in detailed articles on any Hinduismrelated subject, while enjoying vivid and beautiful images of paintings and sculpture, geographic locations, historic figures, key cultural events, and much more. Twelve years in the making and offering more than 6 million words, the IHRF Encyclopedia of Hinduism is a historic achievement. The IHRF Encyclopedia of Hinduism reveals the wonders of Hinduism; the incredible richness and diversity of its peoples, cultures, and landscapes; and the intense drama of its past, including some of the most momentous, exciting, and moving events in world history. ++ 11 volumes, library standard archival binding

Hinduism refers to the indigenous traditions of India, the world’s largest democracy and a rising economic giant. India is also the world’s most ancient surviving civilization, with unbroken continuity back into prehistory. Like other spiritual cultures, India has enjoyed several brilliant golden ages in art and culture over the course of history. Its great thinkers and leaders have permanently changed the face of the globe. But while the glories of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have all been the subject of comprehensive encyclopedias, as yet there has been no definitive encyclopedia of Hinduism—until now. The India Heritage Research Foundation Encyclopedia of Hinduism reveals the vast panorama of the world’s oldest living spiritual tradition. Entries have been organized into twelve subject areas:

1. Art—architecture, music, iconography, painting, dance, theater, and sculpture 2. Hinduism worldwide—Nepal, Southeast Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America, Mauritius, Africa, and the Caribbean 3. Scholarship—Indology, theosophical and commentarial traditions, oral traditions, philosophical studies, sociology, mysticism, and comparative studies 4. Spiritual disciplines—Karma-Yoga, Bhakti-Yoga, Jnana-Yoga, Hatha-Yoga, and Tantra 5. Social institutions and movements—Education, varnashrama dharma, jati, tribes and their customs, diet, dress, sports, holidays, and festivals 6. Sciences—Ayurveda, astronomy, astrology, mathematics, cosmology, chemistry, physics, and geology, among others 7. Religion and spirituality—Scriptures, commentaries, historic texts, the epics, gods and goddesses, saints, mystics, rites and ceremonies, holy places, sectarian movements, temples, sacraments, and modern developments 8. Polity—Political institutions, judicial systems, economics, law and order, military history, and weapons 9. Philosophy—Metaphysics, psychology, ethics, the six systems of Indian philosophy, tantra, and contemporary philosophical schools 10. Language and literature—Source texts and commentaries in Sanskrit and various regional languages, printed texts, myths and legends, and an overview of standard journals 11. Women’s issues—Women in India’s history, marriage, divorce, inheritance, and dowry 12. History and geography—Developments in Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, and Sikh kingdoms and empires, epigraphy, numismatics, flora and fauna, mountains, rivers, and topography

Seshagiri Rao, a respected professor from University of Virginia, and his team traveled the world interviewing scholars and professors from dozens of prestigious universities, colleges, and academic institutions. Quantum Yoga

The Holistic Approach to Creating Your Ideal Practice

Your Right to Know

Genetic Engineering and the Secret Changes in Your Food

By Lara Baumann

By Andrew Kimbrell

Lara Baumann developed Quantum Yoga to help practitioners tap the ancient approach to achieving union with the divine through the harmony of body and mind. Drawing on both Western and Eastern medicine, aligned with quantum physics, Baumann offers a wholebody, whole-mind kind of yoga that is becoming one of the most important contemporary disciplines in the field. This accessible guide is the key to creating the ultimate individualized practice. Part One provides a thorough explanation of the history, philosophy, and varying traditions of yoga and also outlines the body’s gross and subtle anatomies, the basic principles of Ayurveda, and how the modern insights of quantum physics illuminate the ancient spiritual teachings of yoga. Part Two delivers a step-by-step approach, with clear illustrations, to creating a personalized and flexible vinyasa yoga practice. This newly expanded edition takes the reader to a whole new level. With Quantum Yoga anyone can develop the skills and enjoy the freedom of finding their own authentic yoga path to health, happiness, and enlightenment.

Foreword by Nell Newman More than half of America’s processed grocery products contain genetically altered ingredients. They are unlabeled and untested, and we are eating them. Your Right to Know explains the issues and tells us what we know and don’t know about these foods while providing guidance on how to find healthy and organic alternatives. Revised and updated in a new format, this book provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date information on the very real dangers these altered foods present to our health, the environment, and farm communities. Under pressure from the chemical/biotechnology industry, our government has refused to label genetically engineered foods, putting everyone at risk. Not only can genetic engineering lower the nutritional value of foods, but GE crops can lead to increased pesticide use as well as to the extinction of salmon and other fish species. The evidence is overwhelming and in the news now more than ever. Everyone deserves an environmentally sustainable and socially just food culture and reading Your Right to Know is a step in helping to make that happen.

Lara Baumann teaches the Quantum Method® of yoga around the world, and her DVDs have sold widely. She makes regular appearances on Body in Balance TV and runs Yoga Alliance certified teacher training courses in the UK, India, and Sri Lanka. Lara’s powerful relationship with yoga and strong interest in Eastern philosophy is a result of her upbringing in India and Japan, which subsequently led her to complete an MA in religious studies at the University of London. She lives in Sri Lanka.

Preserving the World of Wild Cats By Bhagavan “Doc” Antle Photography by Tim Flach and Barry Bland

By Richard O’Barry | With Keith Coulbourn Foreword by Susan Casey

Foreword by Robert Duvall

Preface by Paul Theroux

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon of one of the most storied of American cities, San Francisco. The Greater Tradition By DR. David Frawley In the past decade, Yoga has become a worldwide phenomenon. Most people are familiar with Hatha Yoga, which emphasizes asana practice (body postures), yet there are many branches of Yoga, including Karma-Yoga, Jnana-Yoga, Bhakti-Yoga, and Raja-Yoga. In his new book Yoga: The Greater Tradition, David Frawley, a renowned scholar of the Vedic science of Yoga, Astrology, and Ayurveda, synthesizes his vast knowledge of the Vedic Science of Yoga into a compact and easy-to-read manual that explains the multifaceted scope of this holistic and sacred science. Frawley’s essential message in Yoga: The Greater Tradition is to promote awareness of “yogic consciousness and a higher yogic state of bliss or selfrealization beyond space and time.”

Form of Beauty The Krishna Art of B. G. Sharma By Swami B. V. Tripurari

Beauty, Power & Grace

Foreword by F. Lanier Graham

By Krishna Dharma

The art of B. G. Sharma is renowned for its elegance of composition, delicacy of detail, gemlike colors, and light-suffused images. Still, the hallmark of his work is its unmistakable aura of deep devotion. In this stunningly produced volume, the artist’s mastery is combined with compelling stories depicting the magical life of Krishna. Excerpts from classics such as the Bhagavat Purana and Gopala Champu accompany 180 paintings, wonderfully illuminated by Swami B. V. Tripurari’s poetic and informative narrative.

Adapted from ancient Sanskrit texts, these stories comprise the literary heart of Hinduism, wherein divinity assumes innumerable forms. Among these, the portrayal of the Goddess is perhaps the most alluring. In just a few of her manifestations, she appears as a devoted wife, a master of the arts, a terrifying demon slayer, a scornful critic, a doting mother, and a crafty lover stealing off into the night. In the Vedic tradition, the beauty, power, and grace of the Goddess is as one, with God, reflecting the universal truth that male and female are simply different expressions of one supreme, absolute truth. The stories of these and many other goddesses, spanning from the obscure to the iconic, are gathered here in a timeless celebration of Goddess imagery, symbolism, and lore. The arresting, original portraits that accompany them complete this mythic repertoire with a stunning gallery of color, form, and meaning.

By Ranchor Prime

Illustrated by B. G. Sharma

With more than sixty stunning plates of original art, Prince of Dharma is a bold and glorious rendering of the life of the Buddha. Author Ranchor Prime brings to life the inspired work of awardwinning artist B. G. Sharma with a sensitive, immensely readable, and rarely seen biography of the Buddha. From his birth as a prince to his final lesson in achieving nirvana, Sharma captures it all. Ornamented throughout with quotes from A Dhammapada for Contemplation, by Ajahn Munindo, the combination of Prime’s story and Sharma’s art culminate in a unique contribution to the canon of Buddhist literature and art that has emerged since the Buddha was born thousands of years ago.

The Journey Home

Autobiography of an American Swami By Radhanath Swami This inspiring tale of adventure and spiritual discovery follows Richard Slavin through a life-changing journey down the path of enlightenment to his current status as one of India’s great spiritual leaders, Radhanath Swami. His story takes the reader across Europe and the Middle East, through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and eventually India. Penniless and half-starved, he arrives in India and climbs to remote regions of the Himalayas, where levitating recluses are among the many famous and unknown mystics who train him in the life of a wandering mendicant. The Journey Home is an extraordinary memoir in which the author weaves a colorful tapestry of adventure, mysticism, and love.

“A stunning story worth reading. Radhanath Swami’s journey from the external to the internal world is awe-inspiring. His determination as an ardent seeker of truth is clear, for at last he savored seeing the soul face-toface. The Journey Home is the story of a seeker who became a seer. May many be inspired to experience what he has experienced.” —B. K. S. Iyengar, author of Iyengar Yoga: Wisdom & Practice

THE NATIONAL PARKS our american landscape

“Every image resonates with some ancient narrative, yet remains as lucid as morning light on a mountain meadow. Shive’s book is a stunning celebration of our true national treasure, the national parks.” —WADE DAVIS, author of One River, Light at the Edge of the World, and Grand Canyon: River at Risk

PHOTOGRAPHER IAN SHIVE describes America’s 391 national parks as “the last authentic vestiges of America’s wild places.” Though Shive has photographed national parks from Florida to Alaska, he approaches each frame with fresh eyes—never losing his respect and awe for each landscape’s ethereal beauty. Whether he is wading through rushing water to capture a reflected sunrise or moving cautiously near a scorpion or a coyote, Shive attempts to capture the wonder that he feels when crossing into wild lands. “From the moment I reach the entrance gate of any national park,” Shive writes, “my mind’s eye leaps forward in total abandon, envisioning red-tailed foxes; sapphire waterfalls; emerald-green, fairy tale–sized trees; or perhaps an entire forest turned to stone.” This stunning collection of photographs gathers the jagged walls of the Grand Canyon, the geysers of Yellowstone, the cascades of Yosemite, and hundreds of other magical sights captured within the boundaries of America’s national parks. Shive’s remarkable images leave no doubt that these windows to America’s past—these havens of wilderness—are our nation’s greatest treasures.

“Ian Shive goes beyond the usual nature images that we have seen all too often. Looking at his work makes you feel like you are seeing the world with fresh eyes.”

THE NATIONAL PARKS our american landscape

IAN SHIVE is an award-winning photographer who has emerged at the forefront of conservation photography, having documented for the last several years the world’s diverse landscapes and the relationship that humankind has with nature. Shive’s images have appeared in publications such as Time magazine, U.S. News & World Report, National Geographic, Popular Science, and Outside magazine. Shive’s relentless pursuit of stunning imagery has taken him around the world—from assignments deep underwater off the California coast to the equatorial jungles of the Malaysian rain forest to the far northern peaks of Mount McKinley in Alaska. In November of 2009 Shive was a guest at the United States Capitol, where he presented a selection of his national park images and shared stories of traversing the parks system, accompanied by a self-produced multimedia film focusing on the challenges confronting the nation’s most beloved landscapes. Shive works closely with major environmental conservation groups such as the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), the Sierra Club, and the Nature Conservancy. He has dedicated his life not only to creating memorable photographs, but to be a champion for environmental awareness. Using photography as his primary tool, Shive has pioneered trends in multimedia film production—exploring the relationship between still photography and video, and co-founding two companies leading this trend: Wild Collective and Tandem Stills and Motion. Shive’s philosophy is that the powerful medium of photography has shaped our view of the environment in the past, and has the power to continue shaping those views in the future. He resides in Los Angeles, California. To see more of Ian Shive’s photography please visit his website at

Krishna and the Mystery of the Stolen Calves A Mandala Classic By Joshua M. Greene Illustrations by Dominique Amendola When powerful god Brahma tries to outsmart the village children of Vrindavan, he learns a lesson he won’t soon forget: There is magic in friendship. From the ancient texts of India called the Puranas comes this universal tale of childhood bonds. The Puranas contain hundreds of stories, many dedicated to Krishna, honored by Hindus worldwide as divinity in personal form. Whether one views Krishna as a transcendent figure or a magical cowherd boy, his stories captivate young readers. Greene teaches Hinduism at Hofstra University and is the author of several children’s books of stories from India. He lives on Long Island.

In this acclaimed retelling of a story from India’s ancient Bhagavata Purana, children emerge victorious over a serpent that haunts the landscape of childhood. When the milelong Agha monster threatens the pastoral life of young Krishna and his cowherd friends, the youngsters join forces. Brilliant colors, Seussian imagery, and lyrical text come together to create a satisfying adventure that nurtures the inner resources needed by young minds to cope with life’s difficult problems.

Kaliya, king of ancient India’s serpent people, crosses the gods and must leave. He takes his serpentine wives and offspring and relocates to the pristine Yamuna River, which flows by young Krishna’s village of Vrindavan. The serpent king’s venom poisons the river. Although only a child, Krishna has sworn to protect the environment and safeguard the many animals and people who depend on the river for their existence. Whether one views Krishna as a divine being or as a mischievous child, his respect for nature is exemplary. This tale from India’s ancient Sanskrit wisdom texts transcends its moment in remote history to deliver a message as relevant as today’s news.

Hector Written & Illustrated by Steve Barnes Meet “zebrapotamus” Hector Huxley. He’s not like the other hippos in the jungle. His unusual black-and-white striped skin makes him the target of hurtful teasing from the other animals on the riverbank. But when a chance encounter opens Hector’s eyes to true friendship, he begins to appreciate qualities of character he never knew he had. This simple story underscores the values of forgiveness, respect for differences, and the need to see beyond external appearances—important messages for young minds growing up in a globally aware era. Bright watercolors illustrate how diversity is part of the natural world.

Manu’s Ark

India’s Tale of the Great Flood

India’s Tale of Kindness to Animals Illustrations by Anna Johansson

From ancient India comes this Eastern story of the Great Flood, lushly illustrated and suited for young readers. When good King Manu prays for God Vishnu to protect the world, his prayers are answered in a most unexpected way. Vishnu appears as a small fish that grows and grows, obliging the king to find larger and larger aquariums to hold him. Eventually, Vishnu reaches a gigantic size and enters the ocean. He announces that a terrible flood will drown the world and that Manu should fill an ark with plants and animals of every species. As in the biblical tale, the floods eventually subside and peace returns to the earth.

In this ancient parable from India, a forest-dwelling hunter learns that cruelty has consequences and that compassion has rewards. When the hunter meets the wise man Narada, “Do unto others as they would do unto you” takes on a very concrete meaning as the sage leads the hunter on an imagined journey in which the hunter becomes the hunted. When the hunter realizes how his actions affect other living things, he has a change of heart and begins to live in peace with the animals he once pursued. The Peaceable Forest is the ideal picture book to inspire young readers to respect life in all its forms.

They’d push him down the riverbank and roar, “Oh, go away! He hid among the waterweeds because he felt he should,

You’re just not one of us! You’re a zebra! You can’t stay!”

No one knew the reason why Hector looked this way. but Hector couldn’t hide himself,

So they laughed at him and teased,

not even in the mud.

“Find somewhere else to play!”

Hector tumbled down and down

But he was strong enough to swim

and gasped, “Oh no! Oh no!”

and find his way to shore.

As water thundered all around,

With one last heave his body slumped,

he felt his panic grow.

for he could swim no more.

And lying all alone, Hector drifted off to sleep. His body felt so tired,
