NICE SHOOTIN’, TEX With a finalized script in hand, Ivan Reitman and his production team descended on New York City in late October 1983. Their shooting schedule included one week of preliminary second unit work and three-and-a-half weeks of principal photography. Ghostbusters would be Reitman’s first time shooting in New York. The city, reeling from years of financial mismanagement and street violence, was a long way off from the rebound that would later enshrine it as a tourist mecca. Ghostbusters reveled in the culture of the city and proudly poked fun at its flaws. The movie’s final line—a triumphant shout of “I love this town”— was a four-word ode to the Big Apple. “I first witnessed the guys, fully outfitted in Ghostbusters regalia, walking casually down Madison Avenue as I was lining up the first shot in the movie,” recalls Reitman. “There

was something remarkably iconic about the way they looked together on that street. It sent a shiver up my spine, and I instantly felt that something special was about to happen.” Reitman began filming with a bottomless reservoir of self-assurance—he’d found success with similar comedies, and here he hoped to hit another home run. “I was living in kind of an alternate universe already, because at this point I had done Animal House, Meatballs, and Stripes,” he says. “So that first time I saw the Ghostbusters walk down the street I said, ‘Oh my god, this should work somehow.’ I don’t know what it was, but the combination of the guys in those almost ridiculous outfits made a kind of visual sense.”

The Ectomobile returns in Ghostbusters II, bearing minor cosmetic upgrades and new “ECTO 2” license plates (in some scenes the plates read “ECTO-1A”). “It was five years later, so I basically took my old drawings off the heap and added more detail to them,” says Dane. “The look had been established for the first one, so it was just kind of pointing people in the right direction.” Ideas incorporated into Dane’s sketches but not in the vehicle’s final design included NASCAR-style sponsor logos and a hood ornament resembling a streamlined Slimer. Concept artist Thom Enriquez remembers the buzz when Ectomobile showed up at the studio. “I had my office right at the entrance of Columbia in Burbank, and as I looked out the window a trailer truck was bringing in the Ectomobile,” he says. “You wouldn’t believe the reaction. I mean these were people who work in film all the time, but they started applauding and cheering.” The most notable changes to the vehicle are the sequel-friendly iterations of the No-Ghost logo on the

Ectomobile’s doors, a prominent dish antenna on the roof, and two scrolling LED signs announcing “FOR HIRE” and “GHOSTBUSTERS: WE’RE BACK.” With the Ghostbusters firm believers in the power of advertising, the nose of the redesigned car bears the painted message: “We Believe You: Call JL5-2020.” “With Ecto-2 you could see how much more complex it was, but it has that off-the-shelf hardware look which is what we were going for,” says Dane The Ectomobile had a larger role in the shooting script, via a scene where a hypnotized Ray recklessly steers through the New York streets. When Winston warns him that if he doesn’t slow down he’s going to kill somebody, Ray snarls, “No, I’m going to kill everybody!” Quick shots from the sequence resurfaced in the montage sequence and—during the summer of 1989—in a Coca-Cola commercial.

THE EVOLUTION OF SEVEN OF NINE F O R M F I T S F U N C T I O N , and in some cases, fits really well. Take that amazing silver outfit that Seven of Nine wore for several episodes following her introduction on Star Trek: Voyager. “Seven was supposed to be regenerating, so the producers wanted her dressed in something that looked like it was halfway between Borg and human clothing,” explains Robert Blackman. “I got stuck on the ‘regeneration’ part in my brain. I thought, ‘Well, it can’t just be a catsuit.’ Because that’s what the producers kept saying: ‘We just want a catsuit. Just put her in something. She’s got this fantastic figure, accentuate things.’ And their interpretation of accentuating things was just cutting the bustline really low. “Before I met Jeri, they sent me some pictures, headshots, and I saw she was a very beautiful woman. But I didn’t get any real photos that showed her body. However, I read the script and I started drawing. I said to [executive producer] Rick Berman, ‘I don’t think this character is only about pandering to all the young boys. I think she would be interesting as a character even if she didn’t have a good figure. While I know you want her figure accentuated, let me see if I can give you something that is very sexy, but covers her from under her neck down to her wrists and even covering her shoes.’ “Jeri came in and she was really game. She got what I was trying to do. She had probably the best physical form I have ever worked with. She was narrow where she needed to be narrow, and curved where she needed to be curved. “And I thought, what would you put someone in if you wanted her to look as if she was spray painted? So I put her in a silver bodysuit. And I had to build an understructure because when you use stretch fabric, it really doesn’t concave in. It’ll go skintight to a high point and then it’ll go straight to the next high point. It won’t form the real shape; you have to make it do that. It was supposed to be a skin-regenerative fabric that would hug every curve, just like real skin. That required a bodysuit underneath the costume, something like a corset but that would allow a lot of movement because she needed to be freewheeling—an action figure. We wound up using a lot of actual surgical tubing—latex tubing—because it stretches. And you can then put it into a stretch garment and still keep a nice rib, a nice bead going from shoulder to foot. So in Jeri’s costume, you can see all of that substructure, and you could really believe she was in a regeneration suit. She looked fantastic. “I think it was one of the sexiest things I’ve ever done.”

Everybody knew who he was‚—he was on the second-highest rated TV show at the time—but he’d walk up to people and say, ‘Hi—Michael Fox.’ Duh. How great was that?” Recalls executive producer Kathleen Kennedy, “Once Michael arrived on set, the entire movie levitated in tone. His unique style and unbridled enthusiasm lifted everything. It became obvious this was what Bob Zemeckis and Bob Gale intended the movie to be.” Fox would work for two of the three scheduled nights at the farm location, as on Friday, the third night, he was taping that week’s episode of Family Ties. In his absence, the company would shoot Sherman (Jason Marin) and Pa Peabody (Will Hare) taking a shot at the disoriented Marty, stuntman Dick Butler trading the Einstein dog costume for the radiation suit. Even though production had their new and improved Marty McFly, there would still be other obstacles thrown in their way. On the first night of shooting at the farm, actress Ivy Bethune, who portrayed Ma Peabody, arrived at the location with an injured ankle. Unable to perform the physical aspects of the sequence, hairstylist Dorothy Byrne was called upon to be Ma’s photo double and complete the work. A week after Eric Stoltz was let go, the January 17 issue of Daily Variety broke the news with the headline “Back to the Future Star Fired

The design and construction of the DeLorean would ultimately be a team effort, with design concepts by Lawrence Paull and Ron Cobb and contributions by Probert who, in his spare time, had done his own take on what the time-travelling DeLorean might look like. After Cobb’s vision was approved, the artist left to join another show. Spielberg, Zemeckis, and Gale had seen some of Probert’s early sketches and asked him to continue that work and embellish some of Cobb’s design. The task of putting together the actual vehicle went to special effects supervisor Kevin Pike. When he joined the production of Back to the Future in October 1984, Pike remembers the decision to use the DeLorean hadn’t yet been made, but when it became finalized shortly thereafter, he made a trip to Glendale, California, where a DeLorean Motor Company collector had a large selection of the cars. Pike bought three of them at a total cost of $58,000. They would be designated the A, B, and C cars. 30

Art director Todd Hallowell remembers how the DeLorean’s distinctive look was augmented for the movie: “In the San Fernando Valley, there used to be a kind of a junkyard for the space program, because, at that time, so many suppliers to the space program were based in the area. A lot of these really specialized machine shops would be building these kind of one-off pieces of equipment for testing, but then they had no use for it, so they sold it to the

DEATH FROM ABOVE

INTRODUCTION

Guillermo del Toro may never have been bitten by a vampire (as far as we know), but this master filmmaker’s body of work has unquestionably born the marks of the mythical figure’s long-standing grip on him. It’s there in his breakthrough feature debut Cronos—with its crafty combination of Mexican melodrama and bloodthirsty addiction— and in the exhilarating Blade II, proof that a vampire movie can be adrenaline-pumping and horrifying in equal measure. Both those films incorporated ideas about vampirism del Toro had been recording and keeping since he was a horror-obsessed teenager. Drawn to folklore at a very early age, del Toro devoured vampire books from around the world. Not just the classic tales, like Bram Stoker’s Dracula, that lay down the framework for the modern era’s vampire lore, but idiosyncratic histories, ruminations, and fiction from believers and storytellers alike: the pulpy thrill of Bernhardt J. Hurwood’s books, clergyman/author Montague Summers’ 1920s tome The Vampire: His Kith and Kin, and Anthony Masters’ comprehensive cultural rundown Natural History of the Vampire. Whether these works took his imagination to decadent noblemen in Eastern Europe or the 8 8

feasting female bloodsuckers of southeastern Asia, the young del Toro made a record of the reveries these books inspired, going so far as to draw what he calls “musings” on a vampire’s physical makeup. If vampires were humans transformed, what exactly happened? “What would they look like inside?” he remembers thinking. “How would they change? The only thing that didn’t make much sense to me was, if they were transformed so thoroughly, why do they have two little [pointy] canines?” The nature fanatic in del Toro also knew that no species existed with hollow fangs for sucking blood. There had to be something tongue-like. But what would that look like? The ultimate goal was to create a biologically true picture of an “accurate” vampire, something that would give the process of “turning” a kind of grimly rational metaphoric logic. To del Toro, vampires weren’t solely the province of gothic yarns, figures embodying desire, death, and romantic misery. They were on the most basic level parasites, spreaders of a most apocalyptic disease. And if they couldn’t be stopped, what would happen to humanity? 9

The first large-scale set seen in The Strain is Regis Air flight 753, a 777 holding hundreds of passengers, each unsuspecting of the evil that lurks below them in the storage hold. When the plane lands at JFK and is revealed to essentially be a parked cemetery sitting on the tarmac, Eph and Nora venture on board to examine what could have wiped the vast majority of the plane’s human cargo. Destined to only appear in the pilot, the Regis airplane set proved to be one of the more demanding to assemble. The sixty-foot-long interior was really two different sets connected together. The cockpit and business class were borrowed from the movie Non-Stop and shipped from New York to Toronto. The coach section and flight attendant area in back, meanwhile, came from a rental place in Los Angeles. “These guys actually take planes, cut them up, make film sets out of them, and rent the pieces,” says Deverell. Production designer Tamara Deverell and her crew then went to work painting and reupholstering the two sections of the set so they would look distinct and also meet Guillermo del Toro’s color palette directions regarding the play between amber tones and blue hues: “We tested colors and went for a very distinct blue/gray tone throughout the plane.” As for shooting at the airport, the production came into some luck when Toronto’s Pearson International Airport let The Strain film at their closed Terminal 1, which is normally used for staff training. Even better, says Deverell, “the inside terminal conformed to our color code: It was all blue-grays, these completely monochromatically cool tones. When I saw it, I thought, ‘Wow.’ If we’d had all the money in the world, we’d have built it that way.” On the tarmac, meanwhile, the production’s lights had to be tilted toward the shooting area so as not to face nearby runways and endanger incoming traffic. Eph and Nora’s special hazmat suits—a skintight layer beneath loose biohazard outerwear—were initially designed in the concept stage by Guy Davis, then custom-made by a company that specializes in containment suits. Dozens of breathing and mask systems were tested before del Toro approved of the apparatus props master Jim Murray eventually built. The helmet system, meanwhile, with its glowing yellow interior and microphone set-up, was a collaboration across many departments, including lighting, sound, wardrobe, and props.

Based on Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s best-selling book trilogy, The Strain is a highconcept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with all the hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers battle to control the fate of humanity itself. The Art of The Strain delves into the amazing design work that went into creating the chilling TV series, including del Toro’s own designs for the menacing beings that pose a threat to humanity’s survival. SPOTLIGHT ON

GUILLERMO DEL TORO FILMMAKER

Following the huge success of Pacific Rim: Man, Machines & Monsters and Guillermo del Toro: Cabinet of Curiosities, Insight Editions is embarking on an expansive publishing partnership with acclaimed filmmaker GUILLERMO DEL TORO. The next four years will see the publication of a wealth of titles created with input from del Toro, including several books that go behind the scenes of his upcoming film and television projects. In the following excerpt from Insight’s 2013 book Guillermo del Toro: Cabinet of Curiosities, del Toro reveals some personal thoughts on directing films.

I think a director is an arranger. Alien is the perfect example. It’s an absolutely mind-boggling feat of filmmaking. People can say, “Oh, well, it’s [H. R.] Giger.” No, it’s not Giger because Giger was a painter before Ridley Scott called him up to sculpt and design. And lest we forget, Scott grouped him with Moebius [Jean Giraud], Ron Cobb, Chris Foss, and Roger Christian. Each of those men brought a syntax, but Scott created the context. I think that’s what directing is—saying, “I’m going to use this photographer, and I’m going to use this musician.” It’s a fantastic feat. Directing is the orchestration and the arrangement of images and sounds and also of people and talents. . . . There is a myth—the myth of the director as this inflexible creature that has it all figured out from the get-go, as if they are a mechanical master who arranges everything perfectly. Some people can point to Stanley Kubrick, and I’ll tell you this: The more I read about him and the more I talk to people who worked with him, it’s only mostly true. He had 80 percent of it figured out. But the 20 percent that he didn’t have figured out, he found—through he same process that every director uses, which is finding perfection in compromise. Because you compromise with the weather, you compromise with the schedule, you compromise with the budget, you compromise with the fact that an actor is sick. You’re figuring it out. You are reorganizing. You don’t necessarily say, “I cannot take this out because the movie will be compromised.” At some point you might have to, but not always. I remember very clearly an anecdote about Kirk Douglas having an accident during one of Kubrick’s movies. I think it was Paths of Glory, but it could have been Spartacus. The anecdote I read was that he was out of commission for over a week, and he got a letter from Kubrick, or a phone call, and Kubrick said, “Could you claim that you’re still not able to work so I can get a few more days? Because I’m just figuring the movie out.” Or take James Cameron, who is arguably one of the most precise filmmakers in the world and the smartest, most disciplined artist I have ever met. The myth is that he is an inhumanly precise filmmaking machine. But the beauty of Jim is that he is all too human. I’ve seen him toil and sweat and, in the middle of the night, ask himself, “What do I do here? What do I do there?” That’s the beauty and power of it: Jim is human but he demands more of himself than anyone else. Why enthrone the myth of the perfect, infallible superhuman if it’s always more beautiful to know that the humanity that creates beauty is the same fallible species that can create horror or misery?

Bach, when explaining his genius, used to modestly say that he just worked harder and that all you have to do is press the pedals on the keyboard and the notes play themselves. Here you have one of the greatest geniuses ever and yet this was a guy that had personal flaws of one kind or another and who created in the face of self-doubt and adversity. I always say it’s more interesting to think that the pyramids were built not by aliens but by people. People go, “Oh, they’re extraordinary things. They were built by aliens.” No, the extraordinary thing is that they were built by people. Normal people. When people say that cinema is life, I say, “Impossible.” Any cinema that strives to be realistic, in my opinion, is going to be confused with a theater play. But any cinema that attempts to be truthful is not afraid of assuming that it is not life. It’s an impossible endeavor. Like René Magritte used to say, “The vocation of art is mystery.” That’s why one of the quintessential beauties of cinema is the spilled cup coming back to the hand by running film in reverse. I don’t care how many years go by, that’s pure magic. Why? Why is it so great? . . . Because it’s impossible. In the same way, what the eye of the camera can see is so much more powerful than what the human eye can see. Think about this: We have such a fascination with slow motion. It’s primal. It doesn’t matter—it never goes out of style if you use it right. There are programs on the Discovery Channel that are dedicated to making you drool at a balloon being perforated by a bullet. Because you’re trying to stop time; you are trying to stop life. I think cinema resonates with a piece of our brain that is way, way in the back. Because the way you watch a movie is not the way we watch life. When you go to a mall, yes, you’re absorbing, subliminally, Drink Coke, and Buy this, and Buy that. But cinema is different because when you go to a theater, it’s like you are going to church. You sit in a pew, and you look at an altar, and the reception is completely different. FA LL 2 01 5

SPOTLIGHT ON

M AT T HEW R E I NHA RT PAPER ENGINEER

World-renowned and best-selling author and artist MATTHEW REINHART studied industrial design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn before finding his calling as a paper engineer. His books include the acclaimed Star Wars: Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy, Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs, The Pop-Up Book of Nursery Rhymes, and DC Comics Super Heroes: The Ultimate Pop-Up Book, as well as two recent pop-up books for Insight Editions—Game of Thrones: A Pop-Up Guide to Westeros and the forthcoming Disney Princess: A Magical PopUp World. We asked Matthew about his impressive career, the Disney Princess pop-up book, and what’s on the horizon:

INSIGHT EDITIONS: What was your first pop-up creation, and what

gave you the idea?

MATTHEW REINHART: Pop-ups weren’t really a big part of my

childhood, unfortunately—my little sister tore apart the only one I had, which was appropriately about dinosaurs, within twenty-four hours of receiving it! That said, back then I was always building and constructing things out of paper and cardboard, whether I realized they were pop-ups or not. Back before digital music media and even CDs, we used to make mixtapes of pop music (prophetic, huh?), and I always included a miniature comic to go with each cassette. There was one person I was smitten with back then who inspired me enough to make a sort of pop-up comic scene for the mixtape package . . . amazing what puppy love will do. I don’t know why I decided to make it, probably just wanted to enhance the scene. That little pop-up scene, the first pop-up I constructed, is thankfully back in my possession. IE: Was there a moment when you realized that you could make a

living out of pop-up design?

MR: Yes. After apprenticing with acclaimed pop-up book master and children’s book illustrator Robert Sabuda for a few years, I started to get the knack for paper engineering. With his encouragement and patient guidance, I was able to see a path toward a real career in movable books. IE: There’s a lot of talk about the decline of print books due to the popularity of eBooks, but nothing digital could ever compare to what you create. Was that a consideration when you first got started? MR: Not at all! I was not that forward-thinking in the least (I’m kind

of in my own world sometimes)—I just wanted to make cool movable books for readers of all ages. Back then, the opinion seemed to be that print books would keep growing, eBooks weren’t a threat, Barnes & Noble would continue to keep opening stores, and Borders Books would be around forever . . . but things changed. Books went in a slightly different direction, and it taught me that an artist needs to continue evolving. Pop-up books and paper engineering will always be a part of the work I do in some way, even though I have already started to broaden the types of books/stories/artwork/media I create in the future. IE: Obviously, some of your books are not designed for kids, but you’ve done a ton of children’s pop-up books in the past. What was the most fun to work on? MR: I’m going to answer in a really corny way, but it’s totally true:

Every book is fun for me in some way. Admittedly, some are more fun overall than others. Being a huge Transformers and Star Wars fan,

both projects were pure love and joy, but also a huge amount of stress as well—everything had to be beyond perfect. Seriously, though, I have fun with just about every book I create. Making pop-ups is really fun, I’m not gonna lie! I sometimes joke about my job being a prolonged Arts & Crafts project, and at times I’m not far off. IE: Have you ever given pop-up tutorials? What’s a project you’d recommend for the novice pop-up artist? MR: Occasionally, I give tutorials if I’ve the time in my busy schedule. School visits are the most enjoyable to me—kids’ art inspires me most. Their imaginations are unencumbered by logic and cynicism. As for novice pop-up creators, there’s a bunch of simple Do-It-Yourself popups on my website, www.matthewreinhart.com, to download, print out, and build—complete with instructions. IE : Were there any creative challenges unique to Disney Princess that

you hadn’t faced before?

MR: The most difficult challenge was choosing which scenes to depict in pop-up form. So many iconic moments, so little book space! IE : How long did it take to construct? MR : To design, write, and illustrate a book this huge and complex requires at least six months. IE : Do you have a favorite pop in this book? MR: They’re all great! I do like transforming pops a lot though, and

there are a couple doozies in Disney Princess. On the third spread, a three-dimensional Cinderella can be transformed from rag-tag to super fabulous with the mere pull of a tab. It’s really magic happening in paper sculpture right in front of your eyes. Even after rebuilding it repeatedly and understanding the paper mechanics of the “magic,” my heart kind of skips a beat when the transformation happens.

IE : Do you have a favorite princess? MR: You’re asking me to choose favorites between all these amazing

stories and heroines? Impossible! That said, The Little Mermaid does hold a special place in my heart, because it was the movie that revitalized the magic of Disney animation when I was young.

IE : What are you working on next? MR : That’s top secret for now, actually, but quite a few big exciting books will be popping out of my studio over the next couple years. Stay tuned!

fter making the jump to book jacket illustration, I spent a couple of years digitally kitbashing photography, but all the while I’d occasionally dip back into traditional media for personal work. I do love the toxic haze of linseed and turpentine filling my nostrils. This is all an inherently delicious yet potentially deadly process, which can be ultimately rationalized by comparing it to forms of even more deadly nihilism. I mused about how to bring oil painting back to my genre work. Although there were instances where an impossibly perfect photojournalism-style image had the greatest impact, I preferred a more painterly finish in my work. I was, however, totally sold on the process of kitbashing photography to evolve and resolve my images. Any traditional workflow that involved drawing thumbnails or painting “studies” paled in comparison. The experimentation afforded to me by a digital workflow, along with the instant option to “undo,” was a game changer. It made for stronger work. I mused about using digital painting applications to bring a painterly abstraction back to the work, but I didn’t find anything that could complete with real oil paint. There

As a result, I developed a hybrid digital/oil paint approach to realize the images I envisioned. I’d started by importing traditionally created imagery into the computer and finishing it digitally. Now I decided it was time to bring the digital imagery out of the computer and finish it in oil paint. I compared notes with some trusted colleagues and settled on having archival prints made, laminating them to a panel, coating them with acrylic gloss medium, and laying in oil paint over the printed content to achieve the painterly style I was looking for. For centuries, artists have been transferring their scenes to their final canvases with whatever technical means were available to them, and the latest digital tools allowed me to transfer my digital collages directly via archival printer, eliminating draftsmanship errors. Once the images became physical prints, they established a scale for the paintings and helped me make decisions on where and how much to abstract the imagery. Whether I work on an image inside the

I mostly wanted to write about Dark SIDe, which I think has been clinging to me for 40 years, not that I mind. the late rick Wright – bless him – challenged me in an extremely annoying fashion to design something graphic, not pictorial. I said ‘I don’t do graphics, I do images’. he said, ‘Well, make a change’. I protested. ‘are you a man or a mouse, storm?’ and he walked away smiling. I was so pissed off, I did it. thinking that we had not as yet represented the light show, a central feature of a floyd

performance, on other covers, I thought I should do something about light. I saw a picture of a prism and its spectrum on a book cover in a book shop, which reminded me of a textbook picture of refraction, which we are all taught at school. this prism refracted into a spectrum belongs to everybody, it’s a quality of nature, but by rendering it as a graphic, against black, it turns into a design which seemed to fit the album to a tee. the album sold a staggering 45 million and possibly imprinted me in the minds of many, and became one of their beloved possessions I should imagine. It is the black that does it. like other artists, I have revisited this design many times, because its mixture of simplicity and universality makes it amenable to different media, be it stained glass, photographic form, illustrative form, made out of fruit or even words. the iconic nature perseveres. our most recent experiments with oily liquids (see front cover), have worked a treat, if not better than the original.

lcome We Arendelle is the kingdom ruled by the kind hand of Queen Elsa. Arendelle includes a snowy range of mountains; the Valley of the Living Rock, home to the trolls; the Village, where the kingdom’s citizens live; and the Forest, located just outside the village.

Eternal Winter When Anna accidentally exposed Elsa’s powers to the public at her coronation, Elsa ran away and unknowingly set off an eternal winter that froze Arendelle. Anna pursued her into the mountains, leaving Hans to take on the task of protecting the kingdom.

The Castle Home of the royal family, the Arendelle Castle is surrounded by majestic mountains and overlooks a beautiful lake. For thirteen years, the castle was closed off to outsiders by the late king’s orders, due to the unstable nature of Elsa’s winter magic.

Olaf Olaf is a lovable enchanted snowman sprung from Elsa’s magical powers. Friendly, naive, and whimsical, he has the uncanny ability to dissemble himself. His playful, childlike personality reflects the innocence Anna and Elsa shared when they first built him in their youth. As she is embracing her winter magic at her new home, Elsa unintentionally recreates Olaf and gives him a mind of his own. He joins up with Anna, Kristoff, and Sven in their quest to find Elsa and end the eternal winter. Olaf has the world’s most impossible dream: He is constantly fantasizing about summer, oblivious to the dangers that warm weather would have on a snowman.

Year after year, Insight strives to innovate in our approach to bookmaking and to evolve with new content and media to create the ultimate immersive experience for readers. No matter what the subject matter, we aspire to publish books that are authentic, engaging, and visual stunning, so we’re utterly thrilled to announce a Fall lineup that truly represents our ongoing commitment to exquisite bookmaking craftsmanship. This season, we’re looking forward to not one but two visually spectacular pop-up books filled with groundbreaking inspirations—Disney Princess: A Magical Pop-Up World and Walking Dead: The PopUp Book—which will prove to be must-haves for fans of both franchises. Our widely renowned paper engineers have created volumes that will amaze and stimulate the senses with intricate pops, pull tabs, and other surprises. Looking for a blockbuster sure to please all those ’80s movie enthusiasts? We’re delighted to announce the publication of Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History. Head back thirty years with us and celebrate one of Hollywood’s biggest hits by reliving the entire franchise history. We’re also pleased to announce the fifth installment in our twelve-book Vault of Simpsonology™ series— Grampa Simpson’s Guide to Aging. And video game enthusiasts will be thrilled this season with both The Art of Halo 5: Guardians and Assassin’s Creed®: The Complete Visual History. The biggest news of the season is our very new and very cool partnership with Sideshow Collectibles! We’ve teamed up with the best in the biz to create one-of-a-kind collectibles to accompany the printed word. Go beyond the book with us and check out our newest line—Insight Collectibles—on pages 36–41. Don’t forget to take a peek at what we’ve created for both Insight Kids and our expanded line of stationery products. Both are exciting, innovative divisions of Insight that, this Fall, spotlight our partnerships with the likes of Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, The Walking Dead, and Frozen. We invite you to thoroughly explore this Fall 2015 catalog, which reflects our continued commitment to providing readers with beautifully crafted, interactive, and visually stimulating products.
