John Lennon’s artwork predated his success with the Beatles and remained a passion throughout his years as a music legend. During his lifetime, he produced numerous sketches and lithographs, which were published starting in the early 1960s. Often surreal and composed through a method of free association, his drawings from this period were widely considered some of the finest interpretive artworks of the era. His book Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock was a #1 New York Times best seller. • The timeless influence of this fascinating era is still felt today in music, fashion, and pop culture.

The banner across the stage read “Love, Music, and Flowers.” The Monterey police, poised for an even worse bacchanal and free-for-all than the annual jazz festival craziness, were taken by surprise with these gentle, peaceful kids. Thousands camped out at a nearby football field where rock bands held forth all night—including some of the festival performers such as the Dead, Eric Burdon, and Steve Miller—from a flatbed truck. The shady grove that serves as the festival grounds was awash in colorful costumes, booths selling handcrafts, and the smell of incense and marijuana. Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones walked the grounds in all his peacock British rock star finery. The Pop Festival programming carefully reflected the expanse of the new music. From England, Eric Burdon would be making the debut of his new, psychedelic Animals. British Mod heroes who had yet to find purchase Stateside, the Who, would be playing, as would an unknown American guitarist who had been making a splash in London circles, Jimi Hendrix. From Los Angeles came Johnny Rivers, the Association, the Byrds (on their last legs), Buffalo Springfield (with David Crosby of the Byrds substituting for guitarist

Neil Young, who had quit the band only days before), and the festival closing act, the Mamas and the Papas, riding a string of six consecutive Top Ten hits. The only new Los Angeles underground rock band included was Canned Heat, who was featured on the Saturday afternoon program, which was otherwise entirely devoted to new San Francisco bands. The Beach Boys were supposed to appear, but backed down at the last minute, fearful they would sound old and out-of-date amidst all the latest groups. To represent the rhythm and blues side, the producers failed to convince any of the Motown acts to appear for free like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and settled for the supper club soul of Lou Rawls and the up-andcoming Memphis soul singer Otis Redding. But it was the San Francisco bands that attracted the most attention, especially Jefferson Airplane, the big draw on the Saturday night bill. Adler and Phillips had to travel to San Francisco to convince the dubious managers of the San Francisco bands to co-operate. They kissed the ring of Chronicle columnist Ralph Gleason, and he gave their enterprise his blessing, which opened the door to booking the San Francisco groups.

So You Got Powers? all right, so you heard My sob story. every mutant’s got one. The world’s tough out there for the likes of us, and for every accepting, tolerant person you meet, there’s three who got a problem with the way you were born. Way I see it, powers ain’t a blessing, and they ain’t a curse. They’re a little of both. And more important you’re stuck with them.

i also Got these claws. you’ve seen theM. they used to be bone, but now they’re covered in unbreakable Metal, alonG with the rest of My skeleton. but that’s a story for later.

reflexes, endurance, and strenGth are riGht up there, too. perfect for fiGhtinG when i’M not sMart enouGh to find another way out of a situation.

My senses are enhanced, too. Got the sMell of a bloodhound, and hearinG that would Make you think twice about the kind of stuff you say about your teachers after class.

HUNTING MADE EASY BEFORE I GET STARTED, I know there are lots of you who may be against the idea of hunting. Killing ain’t for everyone, whether it be taking the life of an animal for a meal or putting down the kind of animal that ain’t gonna do anybody any good if it continues to be let loose in the world. But hunting ain’t the same as killing. And if you’re gonna live the life of an active mutant, you’re gonna need to know how to hunt. Now you’ll learn the bulk of how to stalk, track, and trap your opponent in class. It’d take a whole lot more patience and paper than I got to teach you all the ins and outs of it right now. But what I am going to tell you is how I got started.

Me, i Got a healing factor. you won’t ever find Me coMplaininG about that. won’t deny you’ll hear Me cursinG up a storM when My body’s doinG the MendinG.

When I was a boy, I don’t think I even had it in me to kill a housefly if one got into my room at night. I saw my father fight his battles with the help of other men, and then I saw what that got him: bleeding out on a rug that was worth more than most people’s yearly salary. After I was kicked out of my dad’s place with only Rose by my side, I was pretty much no use to anybody. I couldn’t figure out how to use my powers and couldn’t make any sense of the world. So I went ahead and left it. I worked in a quarry up north but spent all my free time in the woods, listening and watching. That’s 99 percent of hunting right there. Paying attention to what’s going on around you. The stuff nobody else is paying attention to. Pretty soon I was listening to my own instincts. But I couldn’t commit to them. Not fully. I was scared of what was inside me. The claws. The urges. I’d run from any fight there was, until the day I got tired of running. So one night in the woods, when I found myself surrounded by a pack of hungry wolves, I popped my claws for the second time in my life. And I joined them.

now see, all that sounds great, right? Depending on what your mutant powers are, you might think I got off easy. But trust me. I get it. I been hunted my whole life ‘cause of what I can do and what I am. I may be able to blend in with humans more than some, but I’ve paid the price for being a mutant more than most. There’s really only one trick for being like us, only one thing I can teach you. Gotta look for the good in it. Gotta look for what you can do that they can’t. Accept it and move on. Or else it’ll eat you alive. You got enough enemies already. Don’t need to pick a fight with yourself.
