Have fun with traditions! A superstition in the South is the tradition of burying the bourbon. The custom is to bury a bottle of bourbon upside down one month prior to the wedding to ward off the rainy weather. The morning of the wedding, the groomsmen dig up the bottle of bourbon and enjoy a swig, celebrating the beautiful sunny day.

Bold colors are undoubtedly “in”! As you plan your special day, take advantage of this trend and pull in various hues in eye-popping ways throughout all your wedding details. Contrast bright color choices with neutrals such as gold, white, silver, grey, or even copper. I believe happy colors equal a happy party! 8

Don’t be afraid to have an open dialogue and offer honest critiques to the chef during your food tasting. We’ve been programmed to believe that we’re not allowed to give feedback to chefs and perhaps that’s true in an everyday scenario, but when it comes to your wedding food, the planning of the menu should be a collaborative process that takes into consideration your personal preferences and tastes.

As we approach 2020, I expect to see a revival of the roaring ‘20s and all things Art Deco. Black-gold-and-white color palettes will be accented with dripping crystals, geometric patterns, and metallic accents. For fashion, we will see dazzling bridal accessories such as banded hair clips and diamond bracelets with a touch of luxe detail, such as fur.

SUM M ER CHIC Summer weddings often mean bachelorette parties and honeymoons in sunny weather, and you want to make sure you are properly accessorized. Gone are the puka shells from your middle school days – thanks to Rae Feather, there is a new way to embrace seashells in your beach attire. Stylish bangles and necklaces showcase gold cowrie shells, or choose from woven totes featuring fringe, tassels, and real shell details to serve as the perfect way to bring your sunscreen and towel to the shore. Some designs offer handpainted initials while others use shells to spell out letters, but either way it’s a playful way to embrace your new monogram. Starting at $124; raefeather.com

RING OF LOVE

In a way, choosing where to register is like designing your married life. Your wish list will contain the pieces to build your home together. Therefore, it’s not unreasonable to use the same store as the catalyst of this relationship milestone. Gearys Beverly Hills not only has luxury kitchenware and home décor, but also vintage-inspired, nontraditional engagement rings for brides-to-be who prefer statement pieces to classic simplicity. Prices upon request; gearys.com

SLIP INTO LUXURY

Scent is closely tied to memory, which creates an often-forgotten opportunity for your wedding day. By choosing a new fragrance for the occasion, whenever you spritz that perfume again, your mind will rush back to the happy time. Consider Badgley Mischka Eau de Parfum, which has a beautifully bold dewy floral scent. Notes of magnolia trees make it the perfect choice for a Southern bride, but the warm notes of musk and amber will have everyone reaching for the chic amethyst bottle. Starting at $28; badgleymischka.com

Floral-print robes or monogrammed pajamas are cute for the bridal suite while getting ready for the big day, but to complete the ensemble you’ll want to include Birdies. The brand has released their first-ever bridal collection, and these blush and champagne-hued slippers with velvet, fringe, and crystal design elements are far more elegant than lounging around in flip-flops or bare feet. They make a great gift for your attendants as well – though they are part of a bridal collection, they aren’t so obviously wedding-themed as to fall out of use after your nuptials. Starting at $95; birdiesslippers.com

Roll With It Branded Baggage If you choose to change your name after getting married, you’re likely eager to embrace your new monogram. What better occasion than your honeymoon? The new luggage collection from Mark & Graham’s Monogram Wedding Shop includes stylish suitcases in a variety of hues accented with leather detailing. You’ll never mistake someone’s bag for yours at baggage claim again, and it’s light enough that you’ll be able to easily carry it through the airport – even if there weren’t wheels with 360-degree capabilities. The fashion-forward and functional pieces make for a thoughtful wedding gift or the perfect way to treat yourself before the big day. Starting at $199; markandgraham.com

CBD oil has been all the rage lately, thanks to its restorative properties. Celebrities such as Kristen Bell and Busy Philipps swear by the ability of CBD oil to calm everything from anxiety to aching feet. For a bride-to-be getting ready for her big day, that can make a huge difference. To help your skin be at its best for your wedding, honeymoon, and beyond, Lord Jones High CBD Body Oil is enriched with organic avocado, safflower seed, and jojoba oils. The rollerball applicator allows for easy spot treatments and can help to reduce and prevent inflammation caused by razor burn, eczema, sun exposure, and more. $65; lordjones.com

Haute Handbags

As with women’s everyday fashion, bridal gowns tend to be lacking in pockets. Even dresses that do offer the feature aren’t always the most practical, but on your wedding day you will certainly have some essentials that you need to keep track of, and your standard purse just won’t do. Cloe Noel has a new line of stylish clutches embellished with beaded laces and hand-selected vintage jewels, which come together to create unique designs. You may not be able to wear your dress again, but you are bound to come up with reasons to keep using your bridal clutch. $95-$225; cloenoeldesigns.com

REGISTRY TIPS FROM ASHLEY AND HARDY Be in the present. “Don’t worry about what you’ll need later in life; register for beautiful items you will use now.” Consider spending limits. “Be sure to add products in different price ranges, even including some bigger-ticket items where groups can chip in to purchase as a whole.” Select with purpose. “Have fun with it and really think about what you want to showcase in your home.”

“We were looking for quality pieces, not just ‘right now’ things.” As Ashley Berk and J. Hardy Ehlers planned for a beautiful fall wedding in Los Angeles, California, they also took time to create a wish list for their future. Though they already lived together and had what they needed, they used their registry as an opportunity to fine-tune their home and add items they truly loved. Before they created their wish lists, Ashley and Hardy discussed their strategy and determined which retailers they would use. They thought it would be best to complete the registry process together and visit their selected stores in person. Later, they planned to continue adding products using the online format, making sure they continually had a variety of choices in different price points for their guests to choose from. Gearys Beverly Hills was selected for its wide range of luxurious offerings. Ashley and Hardy began their appointment by meeting with a consultant who wanted to better understand what they were

seeking to add to their wish list, and then helped them in selecting pieces and patterns that would work well with the couple’s style and the aesthetic of their interior design. They opted for classic Hermès plates, a sleek Alessi ice bucket, and modern Georg Jensen place settings to replace worn items they already owned. “We were looking for quality pieces, not just ‘right now’ things,” asserts Ashley. “We wanted sleek and modern utensils, glasses, and dinnerware.” The bride adds that though the registry process at Gearys is more time-consuming than other stores, it’s well worth it. “We’re so glad we registered at Gearys because some of our favorite items are from there.” Another added bonus for Ashley and Hardy is that Gearys does not ship right away when a gift is purchased; they instead credit the couple’s account until they are ready to finalize the purchase. “Having boxes and boxes waiting at home when you return from the honeymoon can be overwhelming,” she admits.

Smeg 4-slice toaster, $200; Williams-Sonoma

Michael Aram “Ripple Effect” cake stand, $195; Bloomingdale’s

When they visited Williams-Sonoma, the plan was pretty straightforward. “We wanted handy appliances and useful gadgets for the kitchen,” says Ashley. While at the retailer, they settled on Goldtouch® baking sheets, a kitchen torch, Wüsthof knives, a molcajete, a vintage-inspired Smeg toaster, and a Vitamix blender. “Another upside of Williams-Sonoma is that their gift cards are redeemable at sister stores, Pottery Barn and West Elm,” explains Ashley. “Many friends of ours who were recently married shared this tidbit with us – it’s a great way to buy furniture pieces without requesting them on the actual registry.” At Bloomingdale’s, their selections were more of a mixture of items – from kitchen products to home décor accents – which is what the bride loved most about this store. “The overlap of choices was great!” she affirms. Ashley and Hardy found innovative new pillows, matching Victorinox Swiss Army luggage, a stylish Michael Aram vase, and Georg Jensen picture frames. “It was a pretty easy process, and I was happy to find many things I liked,” shares the bride. Making selections together worked well for the couple. “We were on the same page as far as design: clean colors, sleek, and simple,” describes Ashley. For those engaged who are not on common ground, it’s helpful to discuss what you both want before visiting a brick-and-mortar store. Many retailers have checklists available online, and it’s a good way to get started. In the end, the newlyweds were happy with their selections and were glad they had listened to the advice of their recently married friends. “Have fun with it!” encourages Hardy.

DIARIES Discover travel and honeymoon tips from one recently married couple.

The day after their sophisticated Southern destination wedding in South Carolina, Sarah (née Wade) and Andrew Baehr traveled to Indonesia and Hong Kong for a three-weeklong trip of a lifetime to start their new marriage together. HIGHLIGHTS Watching the sunrise. “We were jet-lagged so we woke up early to watch the sunrise over the ravine in Ubud from our patio the first morning. It was such a great start to an amazing trip!” Hiking Pura Lempuyang. “This is a really cool hike where you get to see lots of different temples, monkeys, and that iconic ‘gateway’ picture with a view of the Agung volcano.” Trekking the volcano. “We did a sunrise hike [through Bali Group Trekking Tour] on the Mount Batur volcano, which was a must and pretty thrilling.”

BALI Desiring a blend of tranquility and adventure, the couple chose to visit two areas of Bali. The first was Ubud, where they stayed for six nights at Viceroy Bali. “It was unbelievable!” affirms Sarah. “The setting is amazing – far enough from the city center so you can relax, but close enough that it’s easy to spend the day in town.” With their own private pool, the pair spent a lot of time on property; however, they also took excursions to the Lempuyang Temple, Mount Batur volcano, and the Tegallalang Rice Terraces. “Ubud was our favorite place of the entire trip,” exclaims Sarah. “We wanted to go somewhere that was different than what we had both experienced, and it definitely was!” Happily surprised by how delicious the food was, the newlyweds recommend ordering babi guling, Bali’s classic pork entrée, as well as mie goreng, an Indonesian noodle dish.

The couple also spent five nights at Hotel Tugu Bali in Canggu to get acquainted with a different side of Bali. “It was a very nice hotel that had a really cool rooftop restaurant with awesome views,” recommends Sarah. Although Canggu was their least-preferred part of the island due to it seeming heavily influenced by non-Indonesian cultures, they still enjoyed the surf town. “We did a food tour [through Bali Food Safari] which was so much fun!” Sarah remembers, sharing their favored stops were Ji Restaurant Bali – housed in a reconstructed centuries-old temple – and Da Romeo Restaurant for fresh Italian fare. “We also took a cooking class [at The Santai] to learn how to make authentic Balinese cuisine, which I highly recommend.” On their way out of town, they visited the Uluwatu Temple, “which was awesome,” confirms Sarah of the colossal over-water cliffs crawling with monkeys.

PHOTOS: VICEROY BALI

GILI ISLANDS In addition to Bali, Sarah and Andrew wanted to see the Gili Islands of Indonesia. With three isles to choose from – Gili Trawangan, known for luxurious accommodations; Gili Meno, a remote, romantic location; and Gili Air, which falls somewhere in between – the pair decided upon the latter. “We chose Gili Air as we wanted the secluded feel but also some activity as we get bored just sitting on the beach for too long,” says Sarah. While they spent the majority of their time relaxing at the pool and on the sand, they also loved observing the natural setting. The island has no cars, just horse-drawn carts, and no police, just a village leader – though they both confirm they felt extremely safe. “The Gili Islands are more rustic than the other places we went, but it’s such a unique experience and was one of our favorites,” she smiles. They called Atoll Haven in Gili Air home for four nights on this leg of their journey. “Atoll Haven was awesome! The property manager goes out of his way to help you schedule experiences and gives you a hand-drawn map of all the cool spots on the island,” notes Sarah. Accommodations

HIGHLIGHTS Watching the sunset. “One of our favorite things to do in Gili was to set up at a restaurant or bar and watch the sunsets. They are unreal.”

feature your own pool and a private breakfast every morning. Days were spent lounging on the expansive beaches, at the pool, and snorkeling in the ocean, while evenings were filled with gazing at the sunset, savoring fresh seafood caught earlier in the day and grilled seaside, and watching fire dancers at beach parties. Other cherished Gili Air activities included dining at Warung Sunny for Indonesian fare and viewing the sunset from Mowie’s Bar, an oceanfront eatery that offers a laid-back ambience complete with lounge chairs right on the sand. “It was probably our most relaxing part of the trip,” declares Sarah of the island destination. Snorkeling. “It was awesome! We saw turtles and also some statues below that you can explore off of Gili Meno.” Lounging on the beach. “There are swings in the middle of the ocean that are pretty picturesque.”

TRAVEL TIPS FROM SARAH & ANDREW “If you have a long flight, break up the travel if you can and make it part of an extended trip!”

HONG KONG Instead of flying straight home to New York from Indonesia, Sarah and Andrew made the most of their layover in Hong Kong by spending five nights at The Peninsula Hong Kong. “It was such a cool and different location compared to the others we saw,” she explains. “I highly recommend taking a few days here if you can!” The luxurious property provided the perfect end to their trip with gorgeous accommodations, beautiful views, and a city experience they loved. The hotel is located in the Tsim Sha Tsui area, which is known for shopping and nightlife; however, the newlyweds spent a lot of time on Hong Kong Island. “The hotel is right by the ferry, which is a must-ride,” Sarah urges. “You get an awesome view of the city, and it’s open-air and really fun.” They also enjoyed high tea at Clipper Lounge at the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, took in stunning views at Victoria Peak, went to the race track, and tasted the fine fare the area has to offer – including seafood and dim sum at the Four Seasons Hong Kong’s Lung King Heen, the world’s first Chinese restaurant to be awarded three Michelin stars. After an unforgettable wedding weekend with their family and friends, Sarah and Andrew were thrilled to continue the joyous celebration with the honeymoon of their dreams.

“Hire a travel agent. We recommend Maureen ‘Mo’ Smith at Travel Experts. She was the best!” “Build in some days with nothing planned so you can explore or add on, as you’ll see and hear about additional things you’ll want to experience once you get there.” “Talk to the locals if you can! We got most of our food recommendations from friendly strangers.” “Schedule early-morning activities in the beginning of your trip as you will most likely be pretty jet-lagged.” More than anything, the couple loved being able to visit multiple locations. “Going to four completely different places made our honeymoon pretty exciting,” muses Sarah. “Ubud was romantic and relaxing; Gili was rustic and more of a beach-party scene; Canggu was all about great food and shopping; and Hong Kong was luxurious.” Though they enjoyed each of the destinations, they both agree they’d go back to Ubud to unwind; however, the locales in summation made their honeymoon unforgettable. “We wouldn’t do one single thing differently,” she smiles. “It was perfect.” HIGHLIGHTS Dining at Lung King Heen. “We had the best meal of the trip there. It’s pricey but so worth it.” Watching horse racing. “We went to the Happy Valley Racecourse, which was a blast! They have cheap beer, and it’s just a super-fun experience.” Exploring Victoria Peak. “You can hike to it or take a tram up, and it offers a beautiful view of the city.”

It was 2015 and after a long day of work with the Los Angeles Dodgers, MLB utility player Enrique “Kiké” Hernandez took some time to relax and watch a movie: Hot Tub Time Machine 2. He was intrigued by an actress in the film and looked her up online. He was pleasantly surprised to learn Mariana Paola Vicente was Puerto Rican and living in Los Angeles – just like him! “He found me on social media and sent a message congratulating me on my performance,” she smiles. Two months later, they arranged to have lunch. Kiké admits the very moment he saw her, he knew he was going to propose one day. “She was as beautiful in person as she was in her modeling pictures,” he confirms of the former Miss Puerto Rico. After six months of friendship, they finally confessed to having romantic feelings for one another. A couple of years later, Mariana and Kiké decided to vacation in Big Sur during a baseball break. The bridge to the hotel was closed, so the couple was flown up via helicopter. They waited by the bar until their room was ready. Unbeknownst to Mariana, they were actually waiting for the photographer. “He had to hike up, poor guy!” she exclaims. They finally made it into their room, which had been beautifully decorated. Kiké furiously shuffled through his backpack to locate the ring. Meanwhile, Mariana, clueless, thought the hotel had done something nice for them and began filming to share the lovely accommodations with her family. “I turned around and he was on one knee,” she remembers of the intimate proposal. “Also, I got it all on that Snapchat video… which I deleted by mistake.”

Wedding planning quickly began and the search for a venue in Puerto Rico was the first task on the list. The couple knew a large majority of their guests would be from out of town, with most never having visited the locale. “We also knew they would probably travel exclusively for our wedding day and would have to leave quickly, so it was a priority to show them as much of a ‘Puerto Rican experience’ as possible,” the bride explains. “I was very happy with our choice of locations because they brought together all the elements that I feel describe the island best: our beautiful ocean, history, and culture!” A modern invitation suite with metallic accents invited guests to arrive for the ceremony at 4PM, however the ceremony was really set for 5PM. “We wrote an hour early because island time is real!” Mariana laughs. The historical Spanish fort did not require much for decorations, which is one reason the bride loved it so, yet it did prove to be a challenge for guest-seating formation. “I didn’t know

42

|

InsIdeWeddIngs.com

which way to face the chairs because we had the fort, the ocean, and the capitol,” she illustrates. “We opted for a circular ceremony, where guests could enjoy different views, with us in the center.” Two uniformed “soldiers” greeted attendees and a piragua cart with Puerto Rican snow cones was set up to offer cool treats to loved ones. Mariana was a vision in an ethereal silk-organza gown in shades of champagne with delicate embroidery throughout the tulle bodice and skirt. She paired it with a matching cape in lieu of a traditional veil. Kiké also made a grand impression with a custom burgundy tuxedo featuring a photo collage, which included their two pups, in the lining. Once the officiant announced the pair husband and wife, the newlyweds kissed, and the string trio began to perform Drake’s “In My Feelings.” A portion of the chorus from the hit song asks, “Kiki, do you love me?” which is a play on the groom’s nickname. “It was a cute surprise for Kiké,” Mariana affirms.

Desiring the remainder of the day to be a big party, the couple decided to “crash the cocktail hour” with traditional pleneros – a group of musicians who sing while playing the drums. From there, Mariana and Kiké introduced family and friends to their reception area, which was inspired by a romantic, modern concept. Stunning arrangements of greenery and bold-colored florals warmed up the all-white ballroom. Tablescapes were clean and showcased gold metallic details, such as bullion-rimmed charger plates. As favors, the bride’s mother – formerly a full-time painter whose work was featured internationally – made glicées of the San Cristóbal fort. At the conclusion of the sit-down dinner, which was a highlight for the groom since he missed tastings due to the baseball season, slices of the guava-and-cheese wedding cake were passed. “I wanted a simple marbledesigned cake to match the marble floors of the casino,” says Mariana. “I also requested a hidden Batman logo as a nod to Kiké’s love of the superhero.” The bride was thrilled with how perfectly everything came together. “If anything went wrong, I never noticed,” she reveals. “That’s the best thing about working with vendors you trust!” She also suggests that other newlyweds try to stay by each other’s side throughout the day because it’s easy to get pulled apart with all the excitement. As for the groom, he relishes in his favorite memory: seeing Mariana walk down the aisle towards NICOLE PALACIOS him – much like the first time he met her. 44

After initially getting to know one another on a dating app, Jeremy Bauer was so eager to go on a date with Jenna Wallis that he accidentally scheduled their first meeting on the Fourth of July – and he already had plans. “I actually sold my Dave Matthews Band concert ticket that I had bought for that night so I could take her out,” admits Jeremy. Their instant

connection confirmed that he made the right decision. “Within three weeks of dating, we introduced each other to our parents, siblings, and families,” shares Jenna. “It was almost immediate that we knew we had something special.” The relationship blossomed and when Jeremy asked Jenna to move in with him, he already knew he would propose one day.

Before popping the question, Jeremy took his sweetheart’s parents to dinner and asked permission for their daughter’s hand in marriage. Naturally, they said yes, and the trio met Jeremy’s parents for frozen yogurt to celebrate together. “The hard part was that Jenna follows all of her family and myself on the Find My Friends [app], so we had to be sneaky and leave our phones behind so she wouldn’t know we were together,” he laughs. A few days later, Jeremy met Jenna’s brother and sister for dinner and asked for their blessings as well. On what Jenna thought was a night to celebrate the birthday of Jeremy’s mom; her beau stopped her – in the rain – in front of the restaurant where they had their first date. He got on one knee and presented her with a stunning cushion-cut diamond engagement ring. “With tears in my eyes and the decoy of his mom’s birthday gift in hand, I threw my arms around him and said yes!” the bride exclaims. A limo arrived and picked up both sets of parents, as well as Jenna and Jeremy’s grandmothers who had flown in from California and Florida, respectively. The families met up with the bride and groom’s siblings at Jenna’s favorite restaurant to celebrate the milestone.

Both hailing from the northern Chicago suburbs, the lovebirds knew that the “Windy City” would be where they would tie the knot. Conveniently, event planner Marcy Glink is a close family friend of both the bride and groom. “It was a no-brainer that we were going to use her to help us plan our dream wedding!” Jenna affirms. Having attended many weddings at hotels in downtown Chicago, the couple started the process by visiting venues they had not been to before. With a large guest list, their options were limited. However, they soon came across the Harold Washington Library and knew it was the perfect place. In addition to the beauty of the winter garden room, the setting felt appropriate due to the bride’s profession as a teacher. Following a romantic “first look” and portrait session by Bob &

Dawn Davis Photography on the streets of Chicago, it was at last time for the evening ceremony to commence. The architectural beauty and glass ceiling of the space inspired a natural garden aesthetic. The end of the aisle featured two beautiful trees as a focal point, and the stunning chuppah was placed in front of a hedge wall and adorned with several varieties of verdure and white blossoms. Jewish traditions were incorporated throughout the service, and the couple honored close relationships with their respective cousins by having them each read one of the seven blessings. After the breaking of the glass, the newlyweds were exuberant during their recessional, holding hands and smiling wide as Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” was performed by the live band. nsIdeWeddIngs eddIngs.com com InsIde

“The space was spectacularly beautiful, but also felt so warm and inviting for our guests.” A design scheme of greenery, classic white hues, and romantic candlelight continued into the reception. “The space was spectacularly beautiful, but also felt so warm and inviting for our guests,” Jenna describes. Three long tables surrounded the dance floor, topped with sleek gold risers to elevate foliage that cascaded down the sides. Tea lights ensconced in geometric terrariums accented the elegant arrangements. Additional round tables were adorned with similarly styled centerpieces that also included a trio of pillar candles. Another design for the alternating round tables focused on a geometric motif with a variety of terrariums and vases

filled with florals. Gold charger plates and chiavari chairs completed the picture-perfect room. “One of my favorite aspects of our wedding reception was how much dancing there was!” Jenna exclaims. The live band even opened with a dance set before dinner, immediately following the cocktail hour. “Our dance floor was never empty,” Jeremy confirms of the big day. The beauty and the energy of the celebration provided an absolute dream day that neither bride nor groom would change if given the opportunity. Jeremy muses, “I EMILY LASNIER had the best time of my life.”

After three months they moved in together. During the next holiday season Dominic started planning his proposal – after securing the blessings of the fathers of the bride, who also helped him find the perfect engagement ring. Armed with a dazzling diamond sparkler, Dominic took his beloved to the gorgeous lookout spot where they had their first date. As they neared the top of the hike, Chelsea saw four musicians and told Dominic they should leave since they were obviously interrupting something; however, he advised her to keep walking and when she heard their song, she knew the romantic setting had been planned for her. “I couldn’t have imagined a more magical moment!” she exclaims.

Since a large number of their 200 guests would be traveling from Europe for the nuptials, Chelsea and Dominic chose to exchange vows at a quintessentially California location with plenty of palm trees and ocean views. Unlike most grooms, Dominic was very involved throughout the planning process, which the couple agrees was a smooth experience due to their decision to hire Charley Izabella King of Bluebell Events. “Our wedding planner Charley couldn’t have made it easier for us,” shares the bride. “She made everything so simple; it was seamless.” The couple elected a “secret garden” theme for the alfresco ceremony. “We wanted to create a magical place that felt sacred and special,” explains Chelsea. Tall wooden gates covered in vines and lush florals opened to reveal the exquisite lawn overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Guests took their seats as they reviewed a storybook-style program written in both English and German detailing their love story. The bride was resplendent in a strapless ball gown as she made her way through dramatic archways on the arms of her fathers to reach her dashing groom. “I was blown away when I saw her and was completely overwhelmed with emotions,” affirms Dominic. “It was an incredible moment, which I will never forget.” An Italian rotunda adorned with plentiful foliage and blooms, as well as azure drapery that blew gracefully in the ocean breeze, indicated the spot for the vow exchange.

The whimsical garden-inspired theme continued into the reception, where guests found their seats atop lace-covered chairs surrounding wood tables left bare of linens or vineyard chairs at rectangular varieties strewn with lace – both styles displaying table numbers fashioned out of mums on moss stands. “It felt warm, cozy, and magical,” the bride reveals of the elegant décor. Centerpieces showcased low arrangements of tulips or roses surrounded by candlelight or towering tree-like designs fashioned out of birch branches, greenery, and soft-hued blossoms. As an ode to German tradition, the newlyweds performed a waltz for their first dance. “We were completely in the moment and enjoyed every second,” remembers Dominic. “The dance may not

have been perfectly executed on my part, but it felt perfect because we had the best time together.” Two father-daughter dances followed, as well as a mother-son dance, an anniversary dance to honor their grandparents, and a performance by the bride’s best friend, who is a singer-songwriter. Guests then took part in the hora and celebrated all night to the sounds of a live band. “The music was incredible!” says the groom. The couple affirms the entire day was everything they had dreamed. “We really went all out to create an atmosphere and experience for everybody,” explains Dominic of the celebration that honored their marriage, as well as the marrying of their two KELCY CHRISTY worlds into one family.

On a weekend getaway to her parents’ cabin in Cashiers, North Carolina, Marie Elise Williams wondered if this would be the time her boyfriend David Griffin would propose. That Saturday morning, they enjoyed a delicious breakfast and set off for a hike around Fairfield Lake. However, first they had to go into town for a quick shopping trip because David had forgotten his tennis shoes. While in the moment, David may have been disappointed at his error, but it allowed him to truly surprise his sweetheart, as she no longer

thought he was about to pop the question. “In my preparationoriented mind, I presumed if David had decided to do it up there, it certainly would not be on the hike where he had forgotten his shoes,” she explains. After reminiscing about the first time they took the hike together, they stopped to take in the view. David embraced Marie Elise, and as he got down on one knee she realized she should have trusted her original instincts. “My heart was so full,” she muses. “I said yes, and almost a year to the day later, we said ‘I do.’”

Labor Day Weekend was the perfect time to host their wedding, allowing friends and family time to travel and enjoy the beautiful mountain town of Highlands, North Carolina. Guests were invited by way of watercolor invitations featuring a custom family crest made for the couple to showcase many of their favorite things – including Brussels sprouts! Many aspects of Marie Elise and David’s courtship and wedding were traditional. As a true Southern gentleman, the groom was sure to obtain the approval of his beloved’s parents before popping the question. He also embraced classical music for the ceremony, using one of his few opinions on the big day to request Vivaldi for the processional. However, modern elements were also present. The lovebirds had a “first look” before the vow exchange and both cite it as one of their most memorable moments. “It was incredibly special,” Marie Elise confirms. David adds that he’ll always remember “turning around to see the most beautiful bride in the world.”

Marie Elise wore a layered A-line gown with a unique pattern on the skirt and an illusion back embellished with beading. The groom and his groomsmen wore azure suits while bridesmaids donned dresses in a baby blue hue. These contemporary ensembles were complemented by the vibrant décor of the ceremony in shades of peach, pink, coral, yellow, poppy red, and raspberry. The tones created a lovely juxtaposition of the natural beauty of the outdoor ceremony space. Following the vow exchange, attendees recessed to an alfresco cocktail hour where bright multicolored linens stood out against the verdant backdrop of the venue grounds. When it was time to enter the reception space, guests found their seating assignments on place cards attached to fresh peaches. While the abundance of windows reminded everyone of the lovely foliage outdoors, inside was perhaps even more captivating. The high beams of the room were adorned with bistro lights, as well as strands of twinkle lights. As if it was in an overgrown garden, the stone fireplace was covered with greenery and colorful roses. An industrial chandelier was similarly embellished with florals and verdure. The wedding cake was lightly frosted and accented with only a few fresh blooms since decoration was unnecessary considering the wow factor of its display. A swing installation with an abundance of greenery and amaranth in addition to roses and dahlias in saturated hues of pink, peach, and coral showcased the confection several feet off the ground. ‘[Our planner] hit a home run with the idea of suspending it in air, [it was] the most memorable object of the reception,” gushes David. 66

HERE COMES THE SUN TARYN BR AN D ES & GUSS FI RESTEIN

June 23, 2018 Port Jervis, New York

When looking for a place to host their summer nuptials, New Yorkers Taryn Brandes and Guss Firestein immediately fell in love with a rusticelegant setting that wasn’t too far from home, yet still provided the opportunity to have a destination wedding weekend with family and friends. “Having a weekend instead of an evening allowed us to get to spend real quality time with all of our guests,” shares the bride of the multi-day celebration at a venue featuring an upscale summer-camp feel and accommodations for their loved ones. On the evening of their wedding day, 300

attendees enjoyed selections of fresh iced tea, lemonade, and fruit-infused water before finding their seats atop white benches or wooden vineyard chairs with ivory cushions. “I wanted a ‘natural beauty’ look for the ceremony since we were getting married out on a mountain top in Hudson Valley,” tells Taryn of the décor. Carrying a bouquet of peonies, roses, sweet pea blossoms, and campanula blooms tied together with cascading ribbon, the bride was a vision of beauty in her strapless trumpet gown as she made her way down the aisle to meet her beloved.

In keeping with Jewish tradition, the ceremony took place beneath a chuppah, which was embellished with ivory, blush, and lavender florals that also filled baskets placed at the base of the structure. Choosing to incorporate traditional customs and familial aspects into the service – such as being wrapped in the bride’s grandfather’s tallit for a blessing – Taryn and Guss made sure to also incorporate modern elements that honored their love story. They exchanged personal vows and live musicians performed instrumental versions of their favorite tunes, including “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles, “Going to California” by Led Zeppelin, and “Love Will Keep Us Alive” by the Eagles.

“Having a weekend instead of an evening allowed us to get to spend real quality time with all of our guests.”

Though the ceremony color scheme was light and romantic, “I wanted there to be a transition in the vibe from outdoorsy to ‘black tie’ when people walked into the reception,” explains the bride of the luxurious décor that filled the barn. The palette changed from soft whites and blushes for the alfresco vow exchange to deep plums with accents of ebony and gold for the evening festivities in order to create a modern interpretation of country-estate style with the opulence of a European alfresco dining experience. Twinkling string lights, glamorous crystal chandeliers, and garlands of greenery were suspended from wood beams overhead. Guests found their seats for the sit-down dinner service at long rectangular tables strewn with purple linens and decorated with low centerpieces in tones of aubergine, pink, and ivory, as well as candlelight and bold gold-rimmed black dinnerware showcasing a plum floral motif. 74

The bride and her mother worked in a collaborative effort with the design team and their family’s beloved event planner to organize the exquisite fête. The groom also held a special role, focusing on the food, alcohol, and music for the entire weekend – even helping to create a specialty watermelon cocktail and coordinating a soundtrack that would best fit their guest list. “We wanted to incorporate music that would cater to the various generations in attendance while also ensuring everyone would be out on the dance floor throughout the celebration,” confirms Guss. His efforts did not go unappreciated, as revelry continued into the early hours of the morning. The memorable wedding was ultimately about celebrating their love; however, Taryn and Guss felt as though the magic of the event was having the opportunity to spend so much time with family and friends. “I think what people most enjoyed was the beautiful setting and the togetherness it provided to be able to share great activities and each other’s company,” says the groom. “Everyone was able to bond and it made the weekend feel that much more intimate and special.” Both agree they wouldn’t change a single thing about their destination wedding. “The highlight was the amount of love we felt – we just could not feel any luckier,” muses the bride. “It was the best weekend of my life!” KELCY CHRISTY

When planning the location of their nuptials, the pair chose a luxury resort in Dallas. “It was like having a destination wedding in my hometown,” shares Leigh of the exquisite property, which hosted the welcome party, bridal luncheon, ceremony, reception, and after-party. The couple worked with the mother of the bride as well as Diamond Affairs Weddings & Special Events to organize the details of their celebration. “I really loved the Diamond Affairs team and feel like they prepared us for everything and helped us make all of the tough decisions,” affirms the bride. Desiring a traditional ceremony, the ballroom featured a classic color palette of ivory with gilt accents. The perimeter of the space was enveloped with flowing vanilla drapery, and over 300 loved ones found their seats on gold chiavari chairs. A monogrammed aisle runner by The Original Runner Company was lined with floating candles and led to a romantic arch comprised of snowy hydrangeas, creamy peonies, alabaster majolica spray roses, O’Hare garden roses, and cascades of white phalaenopsis orchids.

Leigh was elegant in a strapless gown carrying a bouquet of hydrangeas, peonies, lisianthus, ranunculuses, and garden roses in soft pink tones as she made her way to her groom for the vow exchange. Both agree that one of their most memorable moments of the day was including their grandparents in the service. “It was so special to us that we are close with our grandparents who are still living,” confirms the bride. “We felt that they needed to be a part of the ceremony.” Miles’ paternal Jewish grandparents shared the first reading from the Old Testament, his maternal Christian grandparents recited the second reading from the New Testament, and Leigh’s grandparents gave the closing prayer. “There was not a dry eye in the house,” Miles adds. The couple also lit a unity candle and recessed to Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” performed by a string quartet. Since the reception décor was designed around the bride’s favorite color, she made sure to compromise and incorporate some of her future husband’s interests as well. “Miles has always

been a Nashville Predators fan, so I tried to add in some hockeyoriented things,” Leigh explains of her idea to use hockey pucks as escort cards. “Diamond Affairs did an absolutely incredible job turning her wild idea into reality,” Miles shares. Once inside the ballroom, guests were captivated by the extravagant décor showcasing thousands of pink flowers designed by Bella Flora of Dallas. Square tables were topped with a trio of glass vases displaying peonies, garden roses, and tulips at various heights on mirrored stands surrounded by candlelight; rectangular tables featured one of two designs: either gilt stands with overflowing blush, pink, and vanilla blooms with alternating smaller compilations placed between them or collections of clear glass vessels with candlesticks to provide a romantic ambience. A 40-foot-long head table displayed tall gold risers with grand arrangements of blush, pink, and ivory hydrangeas, peonies, garden roses, and ranunculuses, as well as smaller styles that ran the length of the tablescape.

Following the sit-down dinner service, friends and family enjoyed slices of the couple’s stunning eight-foot-high wedding cake highlighting their monogram. In keeping with Southern tradition, a groom’s cake representing the Nashville Predators – and the hat Miles has worn to many games – was savored, along with selections from a candy bar to honor the bride’s sweet tooth. A live band performed on a raised stage with a mirrored façade as revelers took to the dance floor, which featured a grand floral wreath comprised of ivory and pink blossoms with cascading crystal strands and orchid garlands overhead. “The dance floor was packed from dinner to the end of the reception,” notes Miles. “Every person, regardless of age, had a wonderful time.” As the clock struck midnight, the newlyweds and their guests traversed to the original ceremony ballroom for an after-party complete with vibrant lighting, club-style seating, and a well-known Dallas DJ who kept the celebration going until the early hours of the morning. “The whole weekend KELCY CHRISTY was so magical!” Leigh muses. nsIdeWeddIngs eddIngs.com com InsIde

After being introduced through mutual friends at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Lauren Doucette and Matt Kettles became fast friends. “What I remember the most about meeting Matt for the first time was just how easy it was to be around and have fun with him – and honestly that feeling has never gone away,” Lauren confesses. A romantic marriage proposal took place on their two-year dating anniversary. “Without hesitation, I said yes!” recounts Lauren of the special day. With a clear vision in mind for their nuptials, Lauren made sure to stay focused on the details that were important to them rather

than be overwhelmed by numerous sources of inspiration. “You can spend a lot of time on it if you choose,” she explains, adding that she was thoroughly decisive throughout the preparations. The couple began visiting potential venues nearby their home in Los Angeles, as well as throughout the San Diego area. “As soon as we toured The Lodge at Torrey Pines, we immediately knew that was the perfect place for our wedding,” admits the bride. “We wanted a location that was not only a destination for our guests to easily access and enjoy, but also one that would be local to us to help make the planning process easier.”

With the expert guidance of Merilee Hennings of EverAfter Events and support from their families, Lauren and Matt breezed through the arrangements for their spring celebration. “Everyone – including Matt’s mom flying out from Philadelphia – attended the food tasting, which was really fun for all of us to do together,” recalls the bride. For the late-afternoon ceremony, bright white chairs were arranged on the lush, manicured lawn of the five-diamond property. A row of flower arrangements in shades of crème brûlée and green lined the last row of seats, whilst four pedestals with additional large floral creations decorated the area for the vow exchange. The clean color scheme complemented the setting beautifully, fulfilling the aesthetic vision the couple desired. A classic string trio played a blend of pop and contemporary music as loved ones filed into the area. Though the couple had opted for a romantic “first look” prior to the service, when Matt saw his bride walking down the aisle, she still took his breath away. “I was shaking uncontrollably,” the groom describes of the excitement. “It’s a moment I’ll never forget.” She was resplendent in a V-neck lace gown paired with a cathedral veil and held a classic bouquet of creamy white blooms wrapped in silk ribbon.

The service was lovingly officiated by Lauren’s older brother who took time to honor two special people who had passed on: Matt’s father as well as his friend Brian, whom the groom had asked to be his best man. “Since the best man traditionally holds the rings during the ceremony, it was unforgettable to have Brian’s family at our wedding and have his parents hold the rings in his honor,” shares the bride. After cocktail hour, family and friends shifted into the ballroom of the Craftsman-style hotel for the reception. The décor was consistent with that of the ceremony, focusing on understated elegance and clean details. Short centerpieces highlighted lush vanilla blooms and bright-green verdure. All-white table settings showcasing custom menus tucked into linen napkins were made complete with a fern leaf and single ivory bloom. As the night went on and guests danced to the live band, which had been perfectly handpicked by the groom, Lauren and Matt reflected on the happiness of the big day. They agree their favorite moment was during their “first look” when they privately shared their vows with one another. They admit the intimate meeting was filled with endless smiles, tears, and kisses. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” confirms the bride of the overall celebration. As for Matt, his only wish would be to slow it down a bit. He urges other couples: “Really enjoy the day. BUTTERFLY KISSES JACQ U ELIN E GOU LD & DANI EL BLO CK

When it came time to plan the festivities, Daniel encouraged Jacqueline to orchestrate the wedding of her dreams; his only requests were “a lot of tequila and a raw bar.” Being the eldest child and the only daughter, the bride’s parents were delighted to be involved and attend all the vendor appointments alongside her. “It was a such a special time for them,” Jacqueline shares.

A private club proved to be the ideal venue for the couple. “It was a blank slate, yet historically beautiful, and I really wanted to transform the space,” the bride notes. The concept for the ceremony was inspired by a winter wonderland, including all-white florals and butterflies to emulate snow. “I wanted it to feel like winter, but still feel warm and mystical,” illustrates Jacqueline.

Butterflies became a focal point of the décor, first introduced in the invitation suite and carried through to the reception where colorful designs were suspended over the dance floor. “When my grandfather passed away, a butterfly landed on me at the burial and my mom told me it was him. ‘That’s Poppy,’ she said, ‘he will follow you around forever and protect you.’ Since then, I have been obsessed with butterflies,” explains the bride. A gorgeous chuppah with acrylic beams and bedecked in snowy white blooms was erected for the vow exchange, where the couple recited their handwritten promises to one another. Jacqueline looked ethereal in a modern sheath featuring a cowl neck and stud embellishments, which she wore over a long-sleeve lace bodysuit. Her groom looked equally dapper in a black velvet tuxedo.

As the evening celebration commenced, guests were introduced to a ballroom where the ambience was dramatically different than the earlier portion of the day. The “outside” was brought indoors and with the unparalleled talents of HMR Designs, the bride’s vision of a mystical forest came to fruition. “Rishi blew my mind with his ideas,” Jacqueline admits of the whimsically bold, yet sophisticated, floral creations in hues of red and garnet. Massive trees with florals and candles, towering vases with more flowers, and shorter, lush centerpieces alternated on tabletops. “Anywhere a guest looked, I wanted them to see flowers!” exclaims the bride. Stunning Christian Lacroix china with a butterfly motif and red silk napkins completed the look. Because the couple wanted the reception to be mainly dancing with guests rarely sitting down, they had chosen to serve heavier fare during cocktail hour and a lighter dinner service. “The music was phenomenal,” confirms the groom. “Jacqueline and I were specific with the vibe we wanted and the band was amazing.” 98

When it was time for the father-daughter dance, Jacqueline had prepared a surprise for her dad. “I stopped pursuing theater as a career, but my parents still dream to see me on stage,” she explains. As dad and daughter began to dance to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” a recording of the bride singing their favorite version played. “It was a moment I will never forget. He even told me as we were dancing that it was the single proudest moment of his entire life. Not a dry eye there!” she remembers. The couple confirms that the day was pure magic. However, “try not to get lost in the chaos of it all,” the bride warns. “I was told, ‘the second you walk into your rehearsal dinner, let go and just float. Having just received their brand-new puppy Monty, Alyssa Chianese and Michael Palatnek took him to their Tribeca, New York, home to get acquainted. As Alyssa excitedly arranged his area, Michael handed her the canine’s new collar and urged her to read it. Clueless of what was about to transpire, she reluctantly stood up and reached for the collar, realizing the tag read, “Will you marry me?” After happily agreeing, Michael surprised her with an impromptu celebration with family and friends who had been waiting downstairs. After years of vacationing at The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas in the Caribbean nation, Alyssa’s family always dreamt of hosting her nuptials at the luxury oceanfront property. “Luckily, Michael was very on board with the destination idea,” Alyssa says. 102

The bride, who admits to being more of a go-with-the-flow type of gal, thought she wouldn’t enjoy the planning process after hearing how stressful the experience could become. However, with her parents by her side and the aid of talented event coordinators, Alyssa was able to relish in the planning of the fairy-tale celebration by the sea. “The setting of the Cloisters is so unique to begin with that we felt we didn’t need much decoration for the ceremony,” describes the bride. The scenic views of Nassau Harbor were ideal for the romantic, serene vibe that the couple desired. “The grounds are breathtaking and the

landscaping is out of a magazine spread,” illustrates the groom of the Versailles-inspired lawns and gardens. As Alyssa and Michael stood at the top of the stairs in front of a lovely floral arch to exchange both traditional and personalized vows, the bride beamed. “It was exactly what I pictured,” she confides. Alyssa’s white gown featuring dazzling embellishments was a striking contrast to that of the sky blue attire worn by the bridal party. Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” in C major played, marking the start of the recessional, where attendants led guests to a cocktail hour and reception area.

The décor for the evening festivities maintained the muted tones and sophisticated elements from earlier in the day. “We just wanted to highlight the beauty of the surroundings,” asserts the bride. As attendees took their seats in the open-air tent for a sit-down supper, the bride and groom began their first dance to Lady Gaga’s “Is That Alright?” from the award-winning movie A Star Is Born. “The band was absolutely incredible… they nailed our first-dance song, which wasn’t an easy one,” the groom confirms. Next was a special dance joining Michael and his daughter Ella on the dance floor to the song “My Girl” by The Temptations. “It was so sweet,” the bride reflects. Tablescapes were decorated with either tall trumpet vases or crystal candelabra; each arrangement was composed of mixtures of roses, hydrangeas, lisianthus blooms, and cymbidium orchids. Silk champagne-colored linens and ghost chairs, along with metallic details such as gold-rimmed crystal completed the elegant style. Guests enjoyed slices from the four-tiered vanilla cake with a salted caramel filling just before the Junkanoo perfomance – a parade of music and dance popular in the Caribbean – revealed itself. “No one expected them and it was a perfect way to end the reception,” explains Alyssa, who had changed into a second dress and walked in with the group. “They led us all to the after-party at the pool where things got interesting!”

When Nirav Mehta transferred from his firm’s office in New York to Tokyo, he had no idea it would lead him to meeting the love of his life, Akina Uchida. A little over a year after they started dating, she took him home to meet her parents. When Nirav had some alone time with her mother and father, he took the opportunity to tell them he wanted to marry their daughter. “Akina hadn’t told them I wasn’t Japanese,” he notes. “I think that they were still in shock to find this 6’2” Indian-American guy in their house speaking fluent Japanese, but when I asked, they were more than happy to say yes.”

Four months later, the couple was legally married and had a small reception in Tokyo. However, they wanted to celebrate stateside as well. “It was important for me that we could have a big Indian wedding that all his relatives could attend,” confirms Akina. Nirav agrees, adding, “I wanted my parents to have a great time.” They, along with his sister, were incredibly helpful when planning the event on the waterfront of Jersey City due to the distance of the guests of honor. Though the majority of the nuptials featured traditional Indian customs, aspects of the bride’s Japanese heritage were brought in as well. “Since it was a bright, sunny day, we handed out Japanese-style parasols, put the Japanese flag on the wedding cake, and had people’s table cards held in brightly colored origami cranes,” Akina explains.

When guests arrived to the waterfront ceremony, they were greeted with a magnificent sight. Not only did the water and New York skyline make for a stunning backdrop, but the vibrant décor was truly marvelous. “Nirav and I love nature, and we wanted lots of brightly colored flowers and greenery,” the bride shares. “Of course, red and orange are auspicious colors for an Indian wedding, so we wanted those, along with other complementary colors, too.” Pink and yellow blossoms framed the modern aisle runner with a large floral print and led to the striking mandap. Even the seats were colorful, with Chameleon Chair Collection providing rows of chairs with pink, orange, and yellow cushions. The reception that evening incorporated the same vibrant hues throughout. Roses in sunset shades were encased in the Lucite sweetheart table, while vertical and circular floral arrangements accented with greenery decorated round tables and bright candles in similar colors adorned the rectangular varieties. “I wish I had counted the number of roses!” says the groom. In addition to the décor, a lot of thought was put into the eye-catching confection. Four of the tiers were modeled after Indian-style cushion seats and the final tier was a cube with the Japanese flag on each side. The topper was an elephant and the whole cake was bedecked with elegant sugar flowers.

“This being a huge Indian wedding, we knew we needed all of Nirav’s family to do a big dance, including plenty of traditional Bollywood songs,” reveals the bride. “They even found a Bollywood movie set in Japan, and used the main song, ‘Love in Tokyo,’ as the grand finale!” The newlyweds also danced their way into the reception for their entrance, having changed into corresponding navy ensembles. In addition to Indian music, revelers danced the night away to hip-hop from the ‘90s and early 2000s, evoking nostalgia for the groom and his peers. Among the attendees was the mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, who even spoke at the reception. “[It] was a real honor,” affirms Akina. Hardy knew early on that he wanted to propose; however, he began to make real plans after two years. With a sparkling cushion-cut diamond engagement ring in hand, he invited Ashley’s parents to the restaurant where he first met them, securing their enthusiastic blessing. Hardy says, “It was such a joyful and emotional lunch, and one I’ll never forget.” He then waited until Ashley had finished a weeks-long trial to make his intentions clear. On her first weekend at home, Hardy woke up Ashley and started dancing to “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by The Beach Boys. “I started to laugh, not really knowing what was going on but knowing it was all adorable,” muses Ashley. “Within 30 seconds, Hardy was in bed proposing. It was surreal and a moment I will never forget.” Surprising his bride-to-be once again, the groom whisked her away for a celebratory weekend at the same resort where their relationship began. With just nine months to organize a stylish outdoor soirée, the couple hired the experts at Geller Events to make their dreams a reality. “We had amazing planners who we collaborated closely with through every step of the process,” confirms the bride. A luxurious hotel hidden in the hills was selected for the alfresco celebration, and on the first day of fall, nearly 160 loved ones gathered to witness the nuptials. “We wanted a ‘Tuscany meets rustic California’ wedding vibe,” shares Ashley of the elegant setting featuring beautiful florals by The Hidden Garden.

Friends and family found their seats next to the property’s dreamy Swan Lake on either side of a wood-plank aisle lined with verdure and vanilla blossoms. The bride was exquisite in a strapless gown featuring a sweetheart neckline and floral lace embellishments as she made her way towards Hardy to “Your Song” by Elton John, performed by a live pianist. At last, she met her groom beneath a gorgeous chuppah bedecked with lush greenery and flowers in shades of blush and ivory. Though they desired a mostly secular service, the pair did incorporate some Jewish customs, including the ketubah signing, a chuppah, and the breaking of the glass, to honor the bride’s culture. “The ceremony was my favorite moment of the night,” remembers Ashley. Loved ones convened for the open-air reception at long wooden tables decorated with high and low centerpieces, as well as romantic candlelight. The design scheme from the ceremony was carried over, with the addition of deep shades of burgundy to provide a warm, autumnal ambience. Floral arrangements comprised of roses, hydrangeas, dahlias, and protea blooms in tones of blush, ivory, and wine were interspersed with tall taper candles on antique-style stands as well as bowls filled with fresh peaches, blackberries, plums, and dates. Bistro lights gave the space an Italian feel as friends and family shared spirited conversations and special toasts.

Following the sit-down dinner, the newlyweds and their attendees made their way into the hotel ballroom for an afterparty decorated with bold black-and-white lounge furniture, metallic accents, and vibrant lighting. “We wanted that to feel like a real dance party,” notes Ashley. Though the day went by much too fast, the couple agrees their celebration was absolutely perfect. Delighted that she took her own advice, Ashley encourages other brides to do the same in order to have nothing but positive memories from the wedding experience. “Don’t take yourself or the night too seriously,” she urges. “Enjoy it and add elements of KELCY CHRISTY both of you to make it special and personal.”

MODERN NATURE The fates aligned to bring Ama Oppong and Zavontae Holmes together while at university. “We had the same advisor, classes, and teaching-assistant jobs,” Ama explains. “Our dorms were also right next to each other.” It only took two weeks at school before they met, but at first they were just friends. “As new students in college, in a completely new setting and thousands of miles away from home, we both were stuck in the mindset that we had to reinvent ourselves,” Zavontae shares. “We ended up getting to know the more authentic side of each other, and we found that our true characters were much more compatible than the ‘cool alter egos’ that we were portraying.” After a few years of dating, Zavontae knew it was time to propose and reached out to ask for the blessing of Ama’s parents. “They told me that I was accepted as their son long before I could even think to ask the question,” he reveals. During a trip to Orlando with Ama’s father, the lovebirds planned a hot-air balloon ride before sunrise. “Z initially didn’t want to go because he claimed he didn’t feel safe in it,” Ama shares. Under the guise of waiting until the night before to make his decision, he allowed himself to be “convinced” by his sweetheart to go on the ride and hired a violinist, guitarist, and singer to perform when the balloon landed. “I was so intrigued by the musicians that I didn’t notice he was still in the balloon on one knee with a beautiful ring,” she admits. “I freaked!”

The Minneapolis nuptials were inspired by the concept of heaven, as well as Ghanaian royalty in honor of the bride’s family. “Z wanted to emphasize the idea of me being sent from heaven to him,” the bride muses. Donning a truly stunning haute couture gown, Ama carried a bouquet made of Swarovski crystals created by the designer of her dress. The bridesmaids held gold or silver white-feathered fans from Ghana, but flowers still had a big part in the ceremony. The aisle was coated in rose petals and attendants walked through a tunnel of floral arches. In addition to family, flower girls, bridesmaids, and groomsmen, hired ballerinas – representing angels – danced down to the unique altar formed by ivory blossoms. “It was truly a heavenly experience,” Zavontae reflects.

The palatial and ethereal quality of the vow exchange continued to the reception. “Lily V Events created full lush floral trees from scratch using hydrangeas, roses, and orchids for texture and to keep the feeling of heaven alive, Ama describes. The design team also built custom gold-mirrored tables for the event. Other tables showcased vases dripping with crystal strands topped with cream blooms. Seating for the newlyweds was placed atop a lifted white pedestal wide enough to support the bullion table with a cascade of orchids down the front. Alabaster circles filled with curtains of even more orchids created the exquisite backdrop.

Traditional drums accompanied the honorary seating of the royal family of Ghana before the reception festivities officially began. Shortly before the first dance, the newlyweds found they had forgotten the choreographed steps. The bride quickly tried to create alternative moves. “Thinking back on it now we both laugh, but it was extremely nerveracking during the time,” the groom remembers. Once they hit the dance floor, however, things changed. “Surprisingly, muscle memory kicked in and we executed the dance perfectly,” notes Ama. Following the sit-down dinner, guests enjoyed slices of the towering cake. The six-tiered round confection had a 32-inch base and layers fully covered by both fresh and sugar flowers, while the top tiers were accented with gold and alternated between fondant and buttercream frosting. As a nod to the bride’s family, the cake was also stamped with the royal monogram of Ghana. “The day was perfect,” confirms Zavontae. Passing on advice she and her husband received while planning the celebration, Ama says, “Never lose sight of the true meaning of your wedding. Always remember it goes beyond the lavish items and is actually a proclamation of your love for EMILY LASNIER each other.” nsIdeWeddIngs eddIngs.com com InsIde

“Not many men can say they went to their wife’s bat mitzvah,” Cameron Aronson shares. “Rachel [Silberman] was the prettiest girl in school. It wasn’t until a decade later, after college, that I built up the confidence to ask her out.” After he spent years in law school and passed the California bar exam with Rachel’s support all along the way, Cameron knew he wanted to propose. He took her parents to lunch in order to get their blessing, which was happily given. “Rachel is a woman who knows what she wants,” Cameron affirms. “The surprise was going to the jewelry store. She designed the ring, and it was the perfect way for us to go about it.”

Desiring both the ceremony and reception to be outside, but also wanting privacy that is not always possible with hotel weddings, the couple selected a ranch not far from their Los Angeles home. With his career as an attorney keeping him busy, the groom trusted Rachel with the bulk of the planning. “Cameron just wanted me to be happy!” she confirms. However, she did not have to work alone: her parents were incredibly involved in the process. “I often joked that it was their wedding and I was just the bride,” laughs Rachel. Rikki Ladenheim of Rikki Ladenheim Events was also hired as an expert event planner to make sure everything went smoothly.

The ceremony was lively, both in design and spirit. “We wanted everything very vibrant and colorful so we went with bright pink and orange,” explains the bride. A large floral structure at the altar enveloped the rainbow chuppah carried by four friends and family members. Unfortunately, the chuppah broke, so the quartet had “to stand up there the entire [ceremony]; it was ridiculous and amazing all at the same time,” remembers Cameron. The bride and groom were well equipped to deal with the minor mishap, as they had several nontraditional aspects to their service. To reflect Rachel’s passion for her profession as a yoga teacher, her guru officiated the Jewish ceremony, first burning sage over the space. Instead of carrying a bouquet, the bride held hands with her mother and father. “I got so excited to marry my soul mate I made my parents

run down the aisle,” she reveals. That was the most memorable moment of the day to the newlyweds. “We still talk about it all the time,” reminisces Cameron. After recessing to the Hindu love chant “Sita Ram,” the new Mr. and Mrs. Aronson were ready to celebrate through the night with their loved ones. In order to keep the party going, the bride and groom cut out nearly every traditional aspect of the reception. “We did the horah to start, but after that the only thing we stopped for were speeches. No cake cutting, no bouquet toss, just friends, family, food, and dancing,” describes Rachel. “Our first dance was with every person at our wedding,” Cameron notes with a smile. The buffet meal was followed by a “dessert oasis” complete with cake pops, ice-cream sundaes, cookies, and more.

“We wanted everything very vibrant and colorful so we went with bright pink and orange.” The atmosphere was set by the vivid décor. “It was a bohemian wonderland,” gushes the bride. Every color of the rainbow was represented in some way in the reception space, from the vibrant florals and votive candles to the goblets and napkins. Muted lace linens and table runners provided balance and complemented the rustic-chic wooden tables and chairs. Even the lounge area had colorful vintagebohemian furniture, but perhaps the biggest focal point was the fountain. The water fixture was of Spanish style, fitting with the rest of the ranch, but the design team had it overflowing with blooms: bright orange and pink roses, green hydrangeas and amaranth, as well as eucalyptus and other foliage. As the night came to a close and the couple was left with only memories and the beautiful photos captured by Laurie Bailey Photography, Rachel says there is not a single thing she would change about the wedding. Cameron agrees: “I’d do it all over again tomorrow EMILY LASNIER if I could.”

“The desert is natural; when you are out there, you can get in tune with your environment, something you lose when you live in the city.” - Robyn Davidson

DESERT DECADENCE Natives to the Los Angeles area have known the allure of Palm Springs for decades, but the Southern California desert locale attracts visitors near and far. Whether you’re hoping for a destination-wedding weekend, a relaxing bachelorette party, or a romantic “mini-moon,” Colony Palms Hotel will have just what you’re looking for. The property, which was first opened in 1936, is located in the heart of downtown, but that doesn’t mean you need to worry about the hustle and bustle of a city. The small-town vibe of Palm Springs means the location offers convenience to shopping and dining while still providing an escape from city life. Arched entryways, decorative ceilings, and ceramic f loor tiles from the original Spanish colonial architecture – along with Moroccan fabric headboards in the rooms – make every spot worthy of an Instagram post guaranteed to inspire envy. Add in the saltwater pool, chic cabanas, lush gardens, and stunning mountain views, and you’ll see why Palm Springs has long been the place for Hollywood celebrities to get away from it all. In fact, the property includes the Palme d’Or, which was once Frank Sinatra’s secret hideaway. The legendary crooner famously loved spending time in the desert, and today the restored villa can be the site of your wedding reception – it even features a private bridal suite. An on-site signature spa is both an ideal bachelorette activity as well as a great way to get pampered right before the big day. Consider reserving the entire 57room property for an unforgettable weekend of celebrating love and family. colonypalmshotel.com 142

EXPERT ADVICE | PLANNING

How to Seek Inspiration from Styled Shoots Discover what design concepts you’d like to implement at your wedding.

A

s a newly engaged couple, you will scour magazines, blogs, and social-media sites seeking inspiration for your wedding. Inevitably, you will see a series of photos that look so perfect you wonder if they could even be real. In this case, it’s likely that you’ve come across a styled shoot. Often featuring one or two statement pieces and full of luxurious details, these editorial projects are commonplace in the wedding industry and beloved amongst professionals. Styled shoots give planners and designers the opportunity to explore creative ideas and work with new teams in a relaxed environment. These shoots become inspirational for couples planning their nuptials, but translating what you see in a shoot to real life can be challenging. To apply the visuals to your own wedding, try the following:

B-FREED PHOTOGRAPHY

HOW DO YOU FEEL? Don’t start with what you see. Instead, focus on how the images make you feel. Do you get a sense of glamour and opulence or a sweet and romantic vibe from the shoot? Does the couple have a cutting-edge style, or are they classic and elegant? Identify the feeling an image evokes, and take note if it’s what you desire for your big day.

DECONSTRUCTING DETAILS Styled shoots offer a close look at details that often get overlooked while wedding planning. A tablescape can have as many as 100 individual elements on it, and these pieces come together to create a cohesive appearance. How many chargers are set at each place setting? Did the designer use in-house glassware, or did they bring in color and gold-rimmed pieces? Are the f lowers set high above the table, low to the base, or are they mixed? Try working through a picture and list every individual piece, from place cards to menus, the number of candles, and all the different shades and tones that come together. Use this as a guideline when working with your planner and designer on your own concept.

LIGHTING CHANGES EVERYTHING The way a space is lit alters every element in it. Most styled shoots are planned and documented during the day – and with good reason, as it allows every individual piece to shine. At an actual wedding, however, you will likely want to bring the room down for a more intimate feel during dinner. I believe that every real wedding should be shot twice: once in white light, and once with ambient lighting. This allows for the most beautiful images, and gives the couple an opportunity to look back on the progression of their day. It tells a better story, and in the digital age there is no reason not to get as many detail shots as you can. You spent months deciding on those menus; it would be a shame not to get a gorgeous photo of them. MODEL BEHAVIOR Each of us has a good side, and an angle that makes us look our most beautiful. We also have expressions that we hate. Models are experts at presenting themselves to the camera. Study the way the brides and grooms are posed, and then practice standing, sitting, and smiling. Engagement photo sessions give you an opportunity to work with your photographer and practice posing, ensuring that you are comfortable in front of the camera on your big day and that your photographer knows how to make you look your best. Take the time to study a variety of styled shoots. As you do, you’ll begin to see a pattern in the emotions, details, color, and aesthetic that draws you in. Bring these notes to your wedding planner, and then give your vendor team the opportunity to surprise and delight you with personalized elements and unexpected details that will have your real wedding looking like it was handcrafted for a magazine!
