Liana Naylor PUBLISHER/EDITOR

I am Liana, creator and editor of the Inside family of magazines covering Broadwater, Tarring, Durrington, Worthing, West Worthing, Goring and Cissbury.

Welcome Can you believe that this is your 12th edition of Inside Goring? That means Inside Goring is a year old! Easter is just around the corner (as are the school holidays!) although it feels like only yesterday the children went back to school. There are of course plenty of things happening this month aside from an excuse to eat lots of chocolate! Did you know, for example, that 9th April is National Unicorn Day, and that 10th April is Siblings Day? Then we have Earth Day on 22nd April, which has been given added emphasis by recent events and media attention on climate change. The organisers are providing lots of information and free resources for young and old alike who want to become more involved in this vital subject (www.earthday.org). Whatever the upcoming Easter break has in store for you, I hope you and your family get to spend some time together. Stay well and keep in touch

Liana :)

f you have high blood pressure, you have increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, or CVD. CVD is the second most common cause of early death in England. It is estimated that it affects seven million people and one quarter of all early deaths are likely to becaused by CVD. It also causes much of the disability that can stop us from leading the fulfilling and active lives that we aspire to. Early detection and treatment can help people live longer, healthier lives. The NHS Long Term Plan aims to reduce health inequalities and boost prevention of ill health. One of the key targets is to prevent 150,000 strokes and heart attacks caused by CVD over the next ten years. To achieve this target, the NHS wants to increase access to blood pressure monitoring and provide the best help and advice to people at risk. A key initiative is to roll out a new service from Community Pharmacies. Under the scheme, participating Pharmacies will be able to offer blood pressure checks if you; • are over the age of 40 (those under 40 can be included, at the Pharmacists discretion) • have not previously been diagnosed with high bloodpressure • have not had a blood pressure

6

measurement by a health professional in the last 6 months Normal blood pressure is between 90/60mmHg to 140/90mmHg. At this level, the Pharmacist would have a brief conversation about the patient’s lifestyle and other risk factors that may be relevant. High blood pressure - between 140/90mmHg to 179/119mmHg, will prompt a discussion about healthy behaviours and the provision of a device that the patient wears for 24 hours to record the blood pressure over a day. Depending on the readings, the Pharmacist may refer the patient on for clinical help. Very high blood pressure is defines as higher than 180/120mmHg. A patient with blood pressure at this level will be referred to Your their GP for the Know Numbers earliest possible appointment, or even to A&E. In all cases the Pharmacist will advise the patient’s GP of the results.

Sometimes there is no obvious cause of high blood pressure, but some things put you more at risk. These include a family history of high blood pressure, stroke or heart attack. Those of African, Caribbean or South Asian descent carry more risk. And also your age – blood pressure goes up as we get older. To reduce the risk, there are simple steps that everyone can take. You should have a healthy and moderate diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, avoid salt, drink alcohol in moderation, loose weight if you need to, and try to be as active as possible. Knowing your blood pressure numbers also means that you can discuss then with a health professional, and you can be signposted to the most effective source of treatment and advice for the management of your condition. Prevention is always better than cure, so it is important that you know your numbers and get your blood pressure checked.

Call to Action! April Councillors’ Forum: at 7:30pm on Thursday 21st April at St Marys’ Church Hall we are holding a Councillors’ Forum event when we welcome local Goring Ward Councillors to speak about local issues and also local and West Sussex Councillor, Steve Waight, who can give a County wide view. Questions will be taken on the night but if you would like to email any questions in advance, please write to socialsec@goringresidents.org.uk as they will be able to give a fuller answer. There will be ‘a pound in the bucket’ raffle in aid of Worthing Foodbank. Critical situation within the GRA: As you may be aware we have been seeking for some time a variety of roles and skills to ensure the ongoing competence of the Committee. Very recently, unplanned personal issues have arisen which has increased the need for us to recruit these missing positions. Basically, the ongoing future of the GRA is now being brought into question, which is ironic when you consider we celebrated our 75th Anniversary Celebration Concert in November 2019. We are asking if any of you, or members of your family, or neighbours are willing to step forward to urgently help us to fill the following areas – Job descriptions available for all roles Officers of the GRA (attend committee meetings) ❖ Social Secretary Committee members (committee attendance optional, reports to be submitted) ❖ Web Manager ❖ Publicity writer (to provide articles in 3 local magazines) Please contact our Chairman (Eleanor) if you are willing to help or require more information on 01903 629025 or email: chairman@ goringresidents.org.uk GRA Extraordinary Meeting at 7:30pm on Thursday 19th May at St Goring RA’s Call to Action! Mary’s Church Hall: We DO NOT want to lose the GRA and at this meeting we will discuss different ways of working and the viability and future of the GRA.

There is a grave possibility we will dissolve the Goring Residents’ Association at this meeting so please act now. 8

Landlords Must Provide Warm Hom es Since 2018 it has been illegal to privately rent a home with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of below E and last week the Council committed to clamping down on Worthing’s landlords by enforcing these rules. Whilst I welcome any actio n to better regulate landlords and improve the ener gy efficiency of people’s homes, the standard set here is simply too low! The scale spans from A-G with A being highest and D being the average. Why should landlords be allowed to rent properties that perform below average, costing tenants more to run and prod ucing more carbon emissions? EPC certificates have been shown to influence consumer behaviour as mor e people, if they have a choice, will consider the envir onmental impact and running costs of their hous ehold appliances before making a purchase. However the ever increasing demand for rented acco mmodation in Worthing, combined with high levels of deprivation in many areas means that tenants are left vulnerable to uncaring and greedy landlords who will happily evict and replace them rather than address their concerns. We are facing an energy bills crisis right now. The price cap went up by 12% in October and is set to rise again in April by as much as 50% acco rding to industry predictions. I am deeply concerned abou t how many people in Worthing are experiencing hidd en hunger and fuel poverty whilst struggling to pay their rent. I am also acutely aware of the Climate Emergency that we are all facing and with 40% of UK carb on emissions coming from homes this should be an area we address urgently with strong and meaningful actio n. For these reasons I would like to see the Council take a more radical approach to reducing household emissions and ending fuel poverty. A land lord licensing scheme would mean certain mandato ry conditions could be set to protect tenants such as ensuring gas, electrical and fire safety requirem ents are fully complied with, as well as setting a high er bar for the energy efficiency standards. This wou ld be a badge of honour for our decent landlords and ensure that anyone renting in Worthing can be confi dent of having a decent and safe home that is more man ageable to heat. At the same time we could give a boost to the green economy by offering grants for home owners to invest in better insulation and green tech nologies such as air source heat pumps and solar pane ls.

Councillor Emma Taylor, Heene Ward

creating green energy in Sussex Climate change is recognised as the greatest threat to nature and wildlife, while increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather and coastal flooding. Only last month, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that half a million more people are at risk of serious flooding every year, and a billion people living on coasts will be exposed by 2050. Wind energy continues to lead the way in reducing carbon emissions and currently supplies around a quarter of our electricity in the UK, providing home-grown energy security. The urgent need to power electric vehicles, low carbon heating alternatives and the hydrogen economy, means that offshore wind will need to provide the lion’s share in our swift transition to a low carbon economy. Fortunately, the UK is the windiest country in Europe, wind energy is the cheapest form of energy generation and

Rampion 2 the most advanced renewable technology, and offshore wind can be built at a scale to meet this challenge. Rampion 2 Draft Proposals Between 8 and 14 miles off the Sussex coast, the Rampion 2 proposals are for up to 116 turbines – the same number operating at Rampion, also 8 miles offshore at its closest point. Rampion 2 may seem hot on the heels of Rampion but is a full decade behind. Significant technological improvements mean that it could generate three times the power with an electrical capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW). A height to tip of between 210 and 325 metres is being explored and if the larger turbines are selected, the number required would be significantly fewer, for example 75 x 16MW turbines. Flexibility is required in turbine heights to ensure those consented are available in the marketplace at the time of placing turbine orders.

INSIDE Opinion

The power will be brought to shore under Climping Beach, with cables continuing underground for the entire cable route to connect to the high voltage transmission grid at Bolney. The benefits of Rampion 2 Rampion 2 would produce clean, green electricity for the equivalent of over 1 million homes and save almost 2 million tonnes of CO2 every year for 30 years, all in addition to what Rampion already provides. Rampion 2 will also create jobs during construction and operations, and use local businesses and suppliers, where possible. Rampion 2 will look at creating a community benefit fund in Sussex as it did with Rampion, which has already spent £1.6 million to support 114 community projects from our £3.1 million Rampion Fund.

proportion of its construction and operations via UK based contractors, estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of pounds into the UK economy. Since the original project, major turbine factories and assembly facilities have arrived in the UK alongside existing home grown suppliers of cables, and substation equipment. Addressing some Misconceptions Is the site off the Sussex coast good for wind energy? The Rampion 2 site has an excellent wind resource and Rampion has always achieved or beaten its target generation. It’s located close to a large centre of electricity demand and the high-voltage transmission grid to connect the power. It’s also important to have a geographical spread of generation around the UK, since it can sometimes be windy in one region and less so elsewhere.

Care for Veterans Solar Roof, Worthing

What is the benefit to the UK industry? As part of supply chain plan commitments put in place by Government, the project will be obliged to deliver a considerable

Can Government targets to quadruple offshore wind by 2030 be met in the North Sea alone? Unfortunately not in time to meet the UK targets for 2030. Each project in development is likely to have its own challenges, and there is no certainty that they will all be built. There currently isn’t the infrastructure to bring

14 www.insidemagazines.community

01903 357003

the power from all the proposed projects in the North Sea to the demand centres, therefore major grid reinforcements will be required. With an agreed grid connection in Sussex, Rampion 2 is already well in advance of many other projects in planning and it only requires a single connection into the transmission grid. By generating near where the power will be used, you limit the need for even more onshore electricity infrastructure and reduce transmission losses that occur when power has to travel great distances. It took 20 years to reach 10 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind, and meeting the target of quadrupling this to 40GW in 10 years requires contributions from everywhere, with Rampion 2 being the only wind farm in development off the UK’s south coast. Sited 8 – 14 miles offshore, does Rampion 2 contradict Government guidance? We don’t engage in developing projects that conflict with national Government policy or guidance. The Crown Estate invited us to extend Rampion and from the start we have engaged with key government bodies including The Planning Inspectorate, Marine Management Organisation and Statutory Nature Conservation

Is the visual impact of turbines acceptable? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we recognise that not everyone appreciates the appearance of wind turbines, though many do. After the existing Rampion was constructed, a Public Opinion Survey of the Sussex community showed 85% support. Just 4% were negative. Aviation lights at night are a safety measure required by the Civil Aviation Authority and we must meet the statutory requirement, though we will continue to work with the authorities to keep lighting to a minimum. Will there be impacts on land? We assess the best routes to avoid important natural habitats and introduce appropriate construction methods to minimise impacts on the land and wildlife. Construction traffic is an important consideration, so we create a haul road along the cable route to keep it off the local highway network. We will produce a Construction Traffic Management Plan, to ensure construction access routes to the working areas minimise impacts. The impacts of laying the underground cables are temporary with the land fully reinstated. Topsoil is returned, hedgerows replanted and grass

reseeded, as we are committed to reinstating the land to at least as good as its current state. The landscape reinstatement continues to be monitored for 10 years, reinforcing planting if necessary. The Rampion reinstatement has been a success and monitoring continues each year to ensure any trees or hedgerows that don’t survive, are replanted. See our video at: https://bit.ly/3CIvhzj Will there be impacts at sea? Rampion 2 would largely use the same localised construction techniques as before, using jackup vessels to install the turbines and foundations. A single process is used to bury cables under the seabed and backfill the narrow trenches. You can watch construction videos at rampion2. com/consultation. Anecdotal evidence shows that offshore wind farms attract vegetation growth and micromarine life, which in turn can attract greater diversity and numbers of marine life. We are actively engaged with the Sussex Kelp Restoration Project, which is looking at a zone within 4km of the Sussex coast, so is not directly impacted

by the turbines and foundations. Our export cables may have a small overlap with the area in which kelp might occur and we will be assessing any potential impacts on kelp in the Environmental Statement. A decommissioning plan ensures that turbines are removed after their 30-year life, backed up by guarantees and funds required by UK Government.

Bodies. The proposals, once finalised and submitted will be assessed through a formal ‘Examination’ process including a sequence of public hearings. Their acceptability will be judged against Government policy set out in a series of National Policy Statements (see: https://infrastructure. planninginspectorate.gov.uk/ legislation-and-advice/nationalpolicy-statements/)

HAVE YOUR SAY Our consultation continues and we’re working on a number of changes, refinements and improvements to respond to all the useful feedback we’ve received so far. We are confident that we will reach a final proposal which strikes the right balance between the significant wider environmental benefit brought by the renewable energy generated, whilst minimising the local impacts from the scheme.

closes, we see the end of another decade. How time flies! Looking back, we realise what tremendous changes have taken place in the ‘fighting fifties.’ Distance counts for so little now that the continents are spanned in a matter of hours by jet planes. Sputniks and Luniks [unmanned Russian space craft] have been put into orbit with abandon; and the nuclear age spells progress or annihilation, according to the uses to which the knowledge is put. Television, too, has made it possible for people to be present at all historic occasions…. Although much has changed, we come back to the truth that human nature changes very little. At least, let us say external conditions cannot change it, it can be changed only as it finds harmony with God its maker. Let us return for a moment to Bermondsey, and reflect on what life seemed to offer to a child born there in 1909. The 1911 census shows that Ivy was living with her parents in just three rooms. But they were not alone, also living there were Ivy’s brother and sister, two grandparents and two aunts. Ivy’s father had known even greater hardship. He was brought up in a street, notorious as the home of prostitutes and recently released criminals. Ivy’s grandfather, her father’s father, died aged only 47. One of Ivy’s grandmother’s, Harriet Fibbens, was actually born in Ashington, West Sussex. Her life does not seem to have

INSIDE Local History

been any easier for being in a rural location. Harriet’s father, Alfred, a ticket inspector at Amberley Station, died aged only 31. It is unsurprising that Ivy empathised with suffering. She escaped the slums and became a respected person of standing in the local community; but she never forgot her roots, or allow her improved status, to make her forgetful of those who were not so fortunate. Some readers will remember The Bell as a place where the elderly spent their last days in a happy home, being looked after by loving staff. Yet, until the reforms of the 1970s and 80s, The Bell offered a place of sanctuary to anyone who needed it, even though they had no specialist staff. No one at The Bell had been trained to care for people with mental illness, but no one was turned away, as Ivy recalled in 1966 – Many of the patients who come to us through the past year have been suffering from ‘depression’, ‘anxiety state’ or similar conditions – occasioned no doubt, by the stresses and strains of life in the twentieth century. How contrary it all seems that although we now have the welfare state and everything is done to ensure good health that so many folk find themselves under par. Today, people who need mental health care are often offered packets of pills by overworked GPs, unable to refer them to counselling due to vast waiting lists. In 1968, Ivy identified the problem and offered the solution – When one thinks of the rush,

Sunbeam bomb dam

age

bustle and turmoil of life as it is lived today, to be able to find ‘a quiet and relaxed atmosphere’ seems to be just what is needed to ease tired minds and relax tensed bodies. So many of the patients have arrived depressed, perplexed, bewildered and in no time at all have sorted themselves out and enjoyed ‘a season of refreshing.’ How sad that all this work had to stop because The Bell lacked the ‘expertise’ to deliver it. I don’t think our own times would have phased Ivy. Terrorism, Covid, the war in Ukraine – she had lived through terrorism, world wars, the Spanish Influenza, and an unimaginabley hard start in life. Let me leave you with her reflections on 1979, a year in which The Bell was trying to adapt to new laws and regulations and the world appeared to be in flux and turmoil The year nationally too has been one of upheaval and new beginnings. History was made in May when for the first time ever a woman assumed the office of Prime Minister - a fact that

would have seemed unthinkable a few years ago. Then in August, the whole country, nay, the whole world, was appalled by the untimely death of Earl Mountbatten of Burma and members of his family. For such a heroic English sailor, who had stood the hazards of two world wars, to become the target of such misguided men is beyond all comprehension. On the world front starving women and children have died in their thousands. Civil war, greed, hatred and racism are rampant everywhere, whilst love, tolerance and understanding seem to be neglected attributes. Nevertheless, we must constantly remind ourselves that God’s way was to send a babe to be born in Bethlehem. He lived and died and rose again to teach us the way – and having overcome death we know His triumph is sure. Let us rejoice in the knowledge that it is still God’s world and He is fully in control. I wonder how many of us today have that faith and that certain belief that good will ultimately triumph over evil?

KARATE ORGANISATION

ach week, several children participate in what most of them would call their favourite activity of the week, at Durrington Community Centre. SAMA Karate Organisation has been running at Durrington and surrounding schools and other venues for nearly 40 years. Assistant Chief Instructor Shihan David Jacobs and his team of friendly Instructors welcome children from as young as 4 years to learn self-defence, discipline, respect, etiquette, awareness and co-ordination, taught in a fun, safe and happy atmosphere. Since launching in Durrington in 1985, Shihan and the Worthing division of SAMA has produced over 500 Blackbelts. A Blackbelt is a Blackbelt for life, with many of them going on to add the prestigious award to their CVs or even following careers in SAMA themselves. With regular praise from parents and Headteachers alike, SAMA brings out the best in an individual as it focuses on control and concentration. Although Karate can be seen as just a hobby, many attend several times a week and see it more as a way of life.

As well as our Karate programme for children, young people and adults, SAMA also offers young people and adults the chance to focus more on fitness with our Kickboxing classes, or for those who prefer something a little different, then our Tai Chi Chuan Kung

INSIDE Out and About

The Inside Job A fantastic evening spent solving difficult and well thought out puzzles in a fun and exciting way. A great team building exercise or escape from reality, highly recommended to anyone! Jordan Whittingham

W

hen you see an “Inside Out and About” article within these pages, you can rest assured that a team of Inside collaborators have been treated to something special…. special enough to write and shout about! Our experience with Mind Works at their well established “Smugglers Ruin”, which is a Victorian Worthing gin smuggling game, in the Guildbourne Centre, was no exception. If you think about Channel 4’s Crystal Maze, that will give you an idea of what it’s all about. The ideal number for a team is 4, although it’s not necessary

https://youtu.be/AGVA2xNo9lk

to stick to that number. So, a team of four of us, myself (Liana), Matt Marchant (The Real Repair Workshop), Jordan Whittingham (The Inside on Social Media) and Helen Adams (Inside Sustainable Fashion), headed down with trepidation and excitement. None of us had experienced an escape room before, and with one of my sons asking if I’ll actually escape? I was glad that I had been foretold that we would not be “locked in”. We decided to call our team “The Inside Job”. Smugglers Ruin is one of 3 Escape Rooms in Worthing by the Mind Works Team. They have recently acquired an existing escape room in

East Worthing based on the Cold War and at the time of writing, were working hard to develop another Guildbourne Centre experience, based on a 1980/90s style Game Show. Inside Magazines managed to catch the “minds” behind Mind Works on video, which can be seen on this YouTube link. Laurence and Jamie tell us what inspired them to start Mind Works and what they hope participants will experience. From our experience (I’m not allowed to give any spoilers), we can see that an hour in an escape room is not just about escaping from the room itself, but also an escape from anything else that is happening in life. As you work through the puzzles and twists and turns, you become fully immersed and forget about everything

Having never done an escape room before I went into this with very little idea of what to expect, other than solving a few clues! Well, it blew my expectations out the water, I loved every minute of clue solving, searching, twists and turns, going from complete confusion to those light bulb moments, not to mention working with my teammates and having a lot of laughs along the way … I can’t wait for the new ones to open so we can do it again! Helen Adams

Watch the creators of Mind Works The discussing Inside Job how the concept came about and what it means to them.

else. It’s a fantastic team building exercise, and great for families with older children to experience completely un-interrupted family time. It pulls out the strengths of each participant as they problem solve their way through. Jamie and Laurence said that there seems to be no ideal age group, and that they have had many groups of what they called “silver escapers”. The youngest

escapee has been 8. With full wheelchair accessibility, this really is an experience for anyone and everyone. Stag and Hen parties have frequented Smugglers Ruin, and one particularly memorable group of stags turned up with the stag dressed up as an inflatable donkey! When you complete an escape room, it’s done, so repeating

it will simply be repeating the same puzzles again. The idea is that you find another escape room, in fact some people travel around the country, or even the world, trying out new escape rooms. We are very lucky in Worthing to have this exciting form of entertainment, in not only one, but 3 different formats!

INSIDE Out and About

A super-fun evening packed full of local historical riddles, problem solving and puzzles. Will you complete the challenge and escape in under an hour? 5 Stars! Matt Marchant

You’ll be pleased to know that we did escape, and within the hour…..just!

I loved the theme, and it’s relevance to the location, which is very close to where the original Worthing town hall used to be. Worthing has an interesting smuggling history with a network of tunnels and stories, so I found the theme very inspiring Liana

The INSIDE on Social Media

Jordan Whittingham

Is it time for a social media

I

detox?

use my monthly article in this magazine to highlight ways you can use social media to increase your business presence. However, in light what is happening across the world, with the war in Ukraine topping that list, I am using this article to share my tips about taking a break from social media or making it a better place to be. Delete the apps from your phone. This does not delete your profile itself, which many of us would find hard to do, but instead by removing the apps from your phone makes checking the platforms considerably harder. Without the apps within easy reach, you need to boot up your computer, go on the internet, sign in and so on, making a visit to the platforms more of a chore.

Tip 1

see anything they post, and they won’t know that you’ve unfollowed them. This is something I use very often to avoid seeing the asinine views of old school friends that for whatever reason I just can’t seem to delete! Understand that your social media is your space. Contrary to what some may think, your account on social media can be whatever you want it to be. You do not have to hear, listen or entertain opinions if they bring you down/irritate you. Instead get trigger happy with the block button on platforms like Twitter so that you don’t see or hear the unwanted views of complete strangers. There’s a lot to be said for healthy debate, but that is often the furthest thing you’ll find on social media. So, if you see a hateful comment, a nasty photo, or a heinous ‘alternative view’ - click that block button and scroll on!

Tip 3

Clean out your friends list. I encourage everyone to do at least annually. Go through your friends Do not bite. For this step to work, lists on all platforms. Be ruthless. you first have to understand how Unfollow anyone whose content the world of news and social you do not enjoy seeing - that includes old school media has changed. It is no longer friends, celebrities, that guy you met at the club 6 about who writes the best content years ago and even family members! Anyone who or who produces the best story. Instead, it is now posts information that brings you down mentally, primarily about two things: being first, and being or whose views irritate you - has to go. An the most inflammatory. That is why news outlets alternative to this, because sometimes unfriending longer Is it time for a socialno media detox? care about well written journalistic someone can seem harsh - or create articles when something major happens in the awkwardness, especially if they’re family members world, instead they want to post a very quick - is to use the Facebook ‘unfollow’ feature. This article with a scary heading that encourage people allows you to stay ‘Friends’ but means you won’t to either A) click on it or B) comment on it, hence

the term Clickbait. By doing this, they can claim higher interaction when negotiating with advertisers. It is worth understanding that the social media algorithm (that’s the computer code that makes the whole show function) is designed to show you more of the stuff you interact with. So, the next time you comment something like “How is this even news?” under the Daily Mail’s latest Celeb Spotted article informing us of the latest z-list ‘star’ to fall out of a Rolls Royce in Chelsea, all that is going to happen is you’re going to see even more of those posts in the future. You’ve been baited, and if you comment on it you’ve lost and they’ve won. Instead, unfollow or block the page, and scroll on. Verify your information. This is a BIG one recently. Just because it is written in an article online, or somebody has designed a nice picture with some words on it and posted it on Facebook it does not mean that it is fact. These things are designed with the same intentions as mentioned in Tip 4 - interaction. Do not fall for it. Instead, verify information with trusted authorities. For anyone interested, especially those looking to get the real info coming out of Russia and Ukraine, firstdraftnews. org is an organisation built to tackle both misinformation and dis-information. For additional help, support, or if you have any questions please contact Liana via the details on the first page of this magazine and she will pass them along to me to be answered in future editions. Remember, take control, don’t take the bait.

Tip 5

Phil is planning to drive to Poland to collect his partner Yana and her daughter Irma, as soon as their visas are approved. The couple had planned to marry in 2020 but had to postpone due to the worldwide lockdown. Phil invited local people to make donations to transport in his van on his outward journey. Local organiser Victoria Hill - who established Worthing network Crafting for Covid during lockdown - set up a Facebook group to inform local residents. In just three days a suite at the Grand Victoria hotel was filled with coats, thermals, non prescription medical supplies, non perishable foods, toiletries and baby supplies. Both individuals and independent businesses alike have been incredibly generous with donations. There are now so many supplies that additional drivers have come forward. The Phil Sheffield’s Ukrainian Donation Drive group need additional vehicles to drive to Poland. There is also a Bucket at the Grand Victoria for donations. They are also asking for money for towards petrol and travel costs, which can be donated via GoFundMe. There is also an urgent need to keep petitioning MPs to open up vital routes to refuge for families fleeing the war zone in their home country. Phil has just returned from Warsaw where his family are sheltering with another 20 refugees. More information is available on the Facebook group for anyone who wants to get involved. INSIDE The Real Repair Shop

CONTROVERSY Matt Marchant

INSIDE THE WORKSHOP

This month in Tales from the Workshop, I want to talk about three sensitive subjects that are not often discussed in repair circles, and readers of a nervous eco-disposition are advised to look away now!

R

epair Cafes and campaign groups such as Restart.org and Repair.eu work to defend our repair rights, offering support to local communities, by providing empowering repair skills. It’s all good stuff. But I’m often asked to fix things that are not viable because the damage or wear is so great or the time required to fix it will take many months. That’s all before we’ve discussed parts availability, cost and other materials. So, this month, I thought I’d consider the case against repair. ONE Sometimes, it just isn’t worth repairing stuff. Sometimes a broken thing should just be thrown out (at the appropriate recycling facility of course). It’s no coincidence that popular TV series The Repair Shop majors on pre-1980 cherished items. Older items, made from quality materials, conceived before manufacturers built-in precisely planned mechanical and electronic obsolescence, usually stand a chance of being repaired by crafts people, as that’s how they

might have been made in the first place. You see, a child’s toy or home printer manufactured today, on a sophisticated plastic molding machine with sealedin electronics will be almost impossible to repair without destroying the outer casing first. Even if you could get to the faulty battery or printed circuit board, it would be virtually impossible to repair at reasonable cost, assuming the spares were available. Believe me, I’ve tried. When asked to take on certain repairs, I must be honest and frank with customers about the chances of success and likely time a repair will take. It isn’t a conversation I like having, but it’s essential. Those conversations are not TV friendly. Years ago, and I generalise Controversy Inside The Workshop.indd here, people repaired things because it was usually cheaper to patch things up to get more wear out of the item. Whether clothing, cars or kettles, repair kits and local engineers were always available and usually cheaper than buying new. But take a modern washing machine, with parts prices

24 www.insidemagazines.community

01903 357003

often not economical to buy, especially when you factor-in an engineer’s time for the repair. Its often easier and cheaper to replace the whole thing anyway with next day delivery. Just a click away on your phone with interest free credit. That’s a mighty tempting prospect when the family’s washing is piling up on the floor.

TWO On to my second controversial point. Repair is now the reserve of the reasonably well-healed. As a general observation, most of my customers are reasonably affluent women, coincidentally, and have a historic connection with the faulty item they want repaired. It could be a favorite family toy or food mixer that needs a little TLC. To bring it back

THREE New appliances are sometimes more efficient and perform better. Take a domestic fridge. Modern ones could use as little as half the energy than those made 30 years ago and offer more features. Compare a modern household torch made recently, with one made 15 years ago and it will be like comparing a tealight with the sun! Technology never stops marching on, and we can all benefit from replacing some creaking appliances with something up to date at times. But all this comes with a big health warning. You might be wondering if I’ve lost the plot, knocked the shed down and chucked out my screwdrivers. Not a bit of it. It’s usually more environmentally

beneficial to keep something running as long as possible by spreading the manufacturing and shipping impact over a long functional life. And I don’t know about you, but I dislike the thought that someone else has already booked the death day for something I own! I mean, just by looking at carbon-offsetting alone, consider this: Replacing a domestic kettle every three years, which has been shipped from China, made with complicated materials and electronics with no hope of repair, is not as environmentally kind as a simpler one that lasts for 9 years. Sadly, those kettles just don’t exist anymore and if they did, I suspect that they would be far too expensive to be a mass-market product. It’s such a complicated conundrum to solve, it’s just not possible to do in these hallowed pages alone. But I can leave you with a simple piece of advice; look after your things, buy quality items if you can and consider secondhand at all times to make the pound in your pocket go further, all sensible in these uncertain times.

INSIDE The Real Repair Shop

to life, it will need care, parts, experience and (usually lots of) time. All things that cost money. The results will hopefully bring joy to the customer, which is all part of the experience and why The Repair Shop works so well. Repair is definitely a discretionary purchase now and if you’re a bit boracic, and your microwave oven goes kaput, are you going to spend £100 getting your old machine repaired? No, you’ll do the sensible thing and buy a new one for £40 delivered next day, as you need to feed your family.

READER TIPS! In my last installment, I discussed the virtues of keeping old containers and alike as they’re useful for repair. Following that article, some readers got in touch to share their ideas. Rosemary from Worthing wrote in to share her idea for a cheap bird box cover/ woodpecker barrier, using an old 6-pint milk bottle. A section of bottle plastic is cut out of the bottle and held in place over the bird box using drawing pins. This prevents unwanted birds ransacking the supply of food, intended for less able birds. A cheap and elegant design which has been more successful that the RSPB cover supplied! Thanks for sharing, Rosemary!

Until the next time, all the best, Matt. fixitworkshop.co.uk @fix_it_workshop

Friends of Broadwater and Worthing Cemetery have been busy planning and researching an interesting programme of tours, and carrying out the ongoing maintenance of the cemetery. Volunteers meet by the chapel at 10:00am on the last Saturday of the month. New members are very welcome. Bring your own gardening gloves and secateurs. The work is varied ranging, from clearing Ivy from the graves to care of the gravestones. We are hoping to run a full season of tours - uninterrupted by Covid. Our first tour of the year is on April 2nd. Collect at the chapel by 10:45am in order to meet up, peruse the information boards, purchase for £1 a booklet about the tour. Enjoy a hot or cold drink and a slice of delicious homemade cake, for a donation. This time we look again at Worthing as a Seaside Town. The new turnpike road provided a direct road to and from London, enabling holidaymakers an easy and convenient journey to the seaside. This encouraged the building of several terraces of lodging houses to accommodate the visitors. There was plenty to occupy the visitor in the early 19th century, with sea bathing or a visit to the public baths, which had warmed sea water pumped into them, allowing visitors to take the “sea water cure” for the benefit of their health, or perhaps a gentle stroll, whilst watching pony and donkey racing on the beach or taking a trip on a pleasure boat. As the town increased in popularity more hotels and places to eat out appeared, followed by an evening at the theatre.

On Wednesday April 20th at 2:30pm, Graham Farley will speak about “The Importance of Bees and life in the Hive”. Planning the celebrations of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year made Worthing Musical Comedy Society President, Ruth Roberts (the Queen of WMCS) realise that it was also 70 years since she first set foot on the WMCS stage. In 1952, Ruth was invited to join WMCS for their production of Sunny. “I was terribly shy at the time” she recalls “and I was invited to do two solos in the show. I didn’t want to do it, but I did, which started a 70-year journey with the society”. Since joining at the age of 18, things have changed a lot. “Rehearsals were every Monday

and Friday, you never missed one, whether you were needed or not. Even when the local press, hospital and mayor’s ball were on, you went to rehearsals, sped home, got changed and arrived late! It was a real hobby, everyone was there because they loved both performing and also the social side of things.” Ruth met her late husband, Roy, at WMCS. They performed opposite each other on stage and were very involved with running WMCS. Roy was Chair and Ruth ran the wardrobe for many years. They later became

Presidents of the Society. Andy and Lisa, their children, both played leading roles with WMCS and their 5 grandchildren have performed with the youth and adult company over the years. Things do go round in full circle. Dance teacher, Wendy Merson, trained Ruth for her first appearance with WMCS. Wendy’s daughter, Mandy Chapman, is now directing and choreographing WMCS’s latest production of Guys and Dolls. Running from the 3-7th May 2022 at The Connaught Theatre, tickets can be bought from the Worthing Theatres Box Office or by visiting www.wtm.uk

April 2022 Exhibitions & Events at Colonnade House April is filled with inspiration and colour. This month you can explore group shows by local artists Mark O’Halleron and David Apps, as well as a group exhibition from local artists Pat Duff, Laurie Hearn & Vic Davis. We end the month and begin May with a posthumous show of graphic art by Richard Elphick. Find all of this and more at Colonnade House, Worthing’s creative hub. 1

Mark O’Halleron: Still Waters 5 - 10 April 2022 Over the past two years, 2 photographer Mark O’Halleron has been following the trail of pumping stations and CSOs (Combined Sewage Overflows) throughout West Sussex discharging raw sewage into rivers and seas. He uses his lens to document the locations and eventual environmental impact. Mark is currently completing his MA at Falmouth. Visit his exhibition and learn more about his creative practice. Revival, Art from Antiques, Antiques and Art 12 - 17 April 2022 What happens when art and 3 antiques combine? During a chance encounter in 2020, artist and gallery owner David Apps is back at Colonnade House, this time with fellow artist Jared Mort. David and Jared are working together to make expressive custom-made frames using found objects combining with layered and striking original artworks. Expect a ‘British punk explosion and DIY ethic’ in the gallery for one week only.

Brush Strokes 19 - 24 April 2022 Three friends and artists band 4 together at Colonnade House for the very first time. ‘Brush Strokes’ comprises Pat Duff, Laurie Hearn & Vic Davis. Pat uses his brush to paint delicate yet vivid scenes of Worthing and beyond. Laurie captures foreign cities and snowy mountain tops in oils. Vic uses watercolours to recreate impressive vistas of Venice and English countryside. The three artists all cover a wide range of themes and mediums each using the brush in a different way. Richard Elphick: The Ray Lord Series 26 April - 1 May 2022 Experience the work of Richard Elphick. 5 ‘The Ray Lord Series’ is a posthumous exhibition of graphic art including colourful large scale triptychs. Within this work you can follow his political, economic and spiritual thinking. This is a celebration of Richard’s life and final works organised by his friends & family. Make a stand against

homelessness

Book your place at Turning Tides’ Big Summer SleepOut

L

ocal homeless charity, Turning Tides, is inviting you to take part in their Big Summer SleepOut on Saturday 18th June. This year the event will be hosted in an exciting new location - Worthing Football Club. Spend one night under the stars from dusk until dawn to make a stand against homelessness. Raise vital funds to support the life-saving services provided by Turning Tides. The number of people homeless across England is predicted to jump by a third in the next two years. The impact of the pandemic, soaring food and energy bills and government measures, activated at the height of the pandemic coming to an end, will force more people onto our streets. Turning Tides need your help to meet the rising demands placed on their services.

By coming to this event, you are not only making a stand against homelessness in your community, but you will also gain a deeper connection with what it means to sleep rough. Too many people still sleep in car parks, doorways, shelters or anywhere they can just to feel some semblance of warmth and safety. Together we have the power to make a difference and support people on their pathway out of homelessness. In the last 12 months, Turning Tides have supported record numbers of over 900 people. Show your commitment and ensure that no one faces the trauma of homelessness alone. The event will include the opportunity to hear stories

from those who have experienced homelessness and frontline keyworkers who support them. Participants will also receive a light evening meal, breakfast and unlimited hot drinks. Then together, we will spend the night within the grounds of Worthing Football Club to make a stand against homelessness. Places need to be booked in advance and cost £20 per person. Funds raised go directly to support people experiencing homelessness. There is an early bird discount so secure your place now. Participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship and can receive lots of support with this from the Fundraising Team. You must be 16 and over to attend, and those aged 16-18 must be accompanied by an adult who has also booked a place.

INSIDE Volunteering

Become a befriender

and help us to overcome loneliness!

W

elcome to Inside Volunteering where we hope to inspire you to volunteer a little bit of your time and talent to help our local community. Many of us are enjoying the freedom to see family and friends again after two years where we often felt lonely and isolated. But for many older people, isolation and loneliness are part of everyday life. According to Age UK over two million people in England over the age of 75 live alone, and over a million older people say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour, or family member. This isolation can have a serious negative effect on their mental and physical health. “Having someone to talk to is a ray of sunshine in my life!” Time To Talk Befriending are charity who hope to reconnect these people with a world that has forgotten them. They match volunteers with older people in our community who they can speak to or visit regularly.

For many older people this has helped to reignite their lust for life: Muriel, who’s 90, said it feels ‘like being in the world again’. And for the volunteers it’s just as rewarding, many describe their experience as mutually beneficial and enriching. Time to Talk Befriending are looking for people to give just an hour of their time once a week or fortnightly – face to face or over the phone – to talk to older people living in isolation in the community. You can make real difference in people’s lives, overcoming feelings of loneliness and giving renewed purpose. You’ll get training and matches are made based on mutual interests. Due to continued increase in referrals, especially for older gentleman in the area, they are looking for more volunteers of all ages (18+) to join the team. If you’re interested, go to www.volunteer. bhcommunityworks.org.uk to find out more. You can also check out www.tttb.org.uk to learn more about the work they do.

Volunteering is for everyone. Want to make in your community? Community Works Volunteer Centre is here to help you get started.

INSIDE Student Life

St Oscar Romero Catholic School

tudents and staff at St Oscar Romero Catholic School in Goring were overjoyed to spend World Book Day with the award winning children’s author, Elle McNicoll. Elle’s groundbreaking novel, A Kind of Spark was crowned both winner of the Younger Readers’ category and Overall Winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for 2021 and we are sure that her latest book, ‘A Kind of Charm’ will be a 2022 winner! Elle McNicoll is a neuro-divergent author and it was so inspiring to hear her talk to students about her journey from school to a successful writer. Elle’s books appeal to a wide range of readers and contain wonderfully complex neuro-divergent characters as well as neuro-typical characters. World Book Day offered students an opportunity to think about how diverse our world is and how important it is to see the world from a different perspective. St Oscar Romero students were also happy to greet Year 5 students from Arundel CE Primary who also joined in with Elle’s presentation. Elle McNicoll also supported some students as part of a writer’s workshop and signed over 200 copies of her books; students were delighted to meet her whilst she signed each book order with Student Life.indd a personal message to each and every one of her readers! St Oscar Romero School is clearly a school where books are cherished and no doubt their school librarian, Vanessa Shanley, will be as busy as ever as she now has the joy of looking for the next author to visit this wonderful school.
