Hacer fotos a una perrita pariendo, al Partenón griego, al primo que cumple años, es una cosa. Fotografiar a la gente muriendo de sida y de hambre en Somalia, rodeado de doce tipos con Kalashnikov que te protegen, oyendo tiros por todos lados, sabiendo que tu cabeza tiene un precio, es otra. Pep Bonet (Colonia de Sant Jordi, Mallorca, 23-10-1974) puede dar cuenta de esto último. Su trabajo Posithiv+ le ha valido la beca Eugene Smith, el Óscar del fotoperiodismo. Campeón de windsurf a los veinte años, un día descubrió que la fotografía con mensaje era su camino. Dar voz a los que no la tienen, aun a riesgo de perder la vida propia. No se lo toma como una heroicidad, ni como una misión, sino como un trabajo más: el que a él le gusta. A la hora de escribir esta entrevista Pep Bonet está otra vez en Somalia jugándose el pescuezo sólo porque no puede, o no quiere, hacer otra cosa más que retratar el otro lado del mundo. Taking photos of a little dog having puppies, or of the Parthenon, or your cousin’s birthday party, that’s one thing. Taking photos of people dying of AIDS and starvation in Somalia, whilst surrounded by twelve men carrying Kalashnikovs to project you, with the sound of gunfire all around, knowing there’s a price on your head – well that’s quite another thing. Pep Bonet (Colonia de Sant Jordi, Mallorca, 23-10-1974) can give an account of the latter situation. His work Posithiv+ has earned him the Eugene Smith grant – the Oscar of photo-journalism. A windsurfing champion at the age of twenty, one day he discovered that photography with a message was his way forward. Giving a voice to those who cannot be heard, even at the risk of losing his own life. He doesn’t treat it as an act of heroism, or a mission, but a job like any other: the job he loves. As I write this interview, Pep Bonet is in Somalia risking his neck again, simply because he cannot, or will not, do anything but portray the other side of our world.
