Liquid oxygen is oxygen cooled to -297-degree Fahrenheit and is a pale blue liquid.

It is widely used in industries, manufacturing units and has applications at home as well.

Transporting it possesses several risks that must be addressed carefully.

The low temperature can result in severe burns on the skin of anyone that comes in contact with it.

There are chances of explosion due to over pressurization inside the liquid oxygen tanks used for storing it.

Therefore, it is important to understand the precautionary steps that must be taken to avoid the damage done by this flammable cryogenic liquid.


Precautions to be taken while transporting Liquid Oxygen

         

The elevated levels of oxygen can result in combustion of the tank. The cryogenic vessels must be properly checked for leakages and hazards before transportation to ensure safety and protection from any hazard. Ensure that the cryogenic vessel vent discharge lines are piped outside the vehicle if the container is permanently installed on a vehicle. The liquid should not come in contact with asphalt or oil to prevent combustion. Leave the cargo doors open while filling the liquid oxygen in the tank. The leftover gas must be released in the open area and the vessel must never be filled in a moving vehicle or when the engine is running. To prevent the buildup of excess oxygen, the driver’s compartment must be separated from the cargo. There should be rigid windows installed to prevent the vehicle being filled with combustible oxygen. While transporting the liquid in the cryogenic vessels, proper piping must be installed. The leftover vapors should be let to dry before moving the vehicle. Proper signs that prohibit smoking & fire must be placed. To recognize the vehicles, placards and labels should be marked on the containers.
