Fullerene is a carbon allotrope of 60 interlinked carbon atoms, which possesses outstanding antioxidant properties. It has low solubility in water and oil and is difficult to formulate in cosmetics. However, thanks to fullerene-dispersing techniques, it has recently been incorporated into various types of cosmetics and beauty serums. Fullerene-containing cosmetics are widely formulated overseas in China, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, USA, and Japan, and the information pertaining to their use, efficacy, and safety is constantly being updated. Active oxygen damages the hair and skin, prompting the development of hair care products with the antioxidant power of fullerene, many of which are already on the market. Compared to other antioxidants, fullerene has outstanding antioxidant potential even in the presence of strong UV

radiation, and is therefore suited for use as an antioxidant for hair, which is typically exposed to more sunlight than skin.
