Suzuki chief meets Modi; Gujarat plant to start soon Gandhinagar: Chairman of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp (SMC) Osamu Suzuki on Saturday met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and informed him that the board of company's Indian subsidiary MSI has decided to start the work at Gujarat plant. Top company officials, who also planned to carry out detailed inspection of the site at Hansalpur near Becharaji in Mehasana district tomorrow, said as per their schedule the manufacturing would start from the plant by 2015-16. "This morning we had a meeting of the company's board in New Delhi. The board decided that we should begin the work at Becharaji in Gujarat. We have come here to inform about this decision to the Chief Minister and also give a courtesy call to him," Maruti

Suzuki India (MSI) Chairman R C Bhargava told reporters after the meeting with Modi here. Suzuki, Bhargava and company Managing Director and CEO and Kenichi Ayukawa called on the Chief Minister here tonight. During the meeting, Modi said that with this decision, Becharaji would develop as an automobile hub in future.Replying to a question on tomorrow's planned visit to the

plant site, Bhargava said: "We shall be going tomorrow to the site for a visit to take a look how are the villages and what is the approach to them." MSI has acquired 600 acres of land in Hansalpur, where Bhargava said that Maruti and vendors will set up their units. The plant output will be 2.5 lakhs car per annum. Bhargava also said, "No formal ground-breaking ceremony will be held at Hansalpur, but one fine day you will see work going on their." Maruti has also acquired another 500 to 600 acres of land in Vitthalpur about 40 kms from the first site for their second plant in the

state. Maruti is setting up two plants in the state. When asked about the acquisition of land parcel for MSI's second proposed plant in Gujarat, Bhargava said, "For the second plant, 500 to 600 acres of land was to be acquired. One portion has been acquired and am not sure about the remaining portion." He clarified that first unit proposed at Mehsana will come up with an investment of between Rs 2,000 to 2,200 crore.Speaking about the company's result, he said, "For the last few years, we have been focusing on reducing cost and improving quality. “So the results are much better than market expectations. Depreciation of yen was also one of the major factors, but we have been successful in reducing the cost and results will improve further".

Saradha chit fund scam: Rate cut of less than 50 bps may lead to mkt correction Govt announces multi-agency probe Mumbai, April 27: During the week gone by the Nifty played out as anticipated and finished 10 points higher from the upper end of the range at 5,860. Continuance of decent earnings of private sector banks along with welcome earning surprises from Idea cellularBSE 5.20 %, United Phosphorus, Hindustan Zinc, LIC Housing FinanceBSE 6.31 % and Maruti kept the momentum up. Private sector banks have been consistent on asset quality while in Maruti's case it was largely to do with favorable currency play. We now enter the other half of the earnings season. Usually companies delivering good numbers come in first while the alarming ones are posted later. Earnings from PSU banks, metals, cement, infrastructure and steel are due now. Saving grace being negatives has largely been priced in for a majority of them in the aforementioned space.

Companies which have posted a better set of numbers will be first movers in a good market while IT stocks may provide floor in a bad market where valuation comfort is back.My own sense is that for the Nifty to continue its upmove a '50' basis point rate cut is required and anything less than that may trigger a sharp correction in the markets. If a patient needs 500mg of medicine for quick recovery, administering 250 mg of dosage may turn out to be counterproductive. Further, breadth of the market in the previous week weakened on account of

profit taking pressure. Around 45 per cent of top 200 BSE listed stocks by market capitalization posted positive stock price returns while headline index Nifty posted gains of 1.53%. This in itself advocates cautionary approach by market participants heading into a big event week. I believe this trend will continue till RBI's monetary policy is made public. The likely range of the Nifty till then will be 5,800 to 5,950. In the event of less than a 50 basis points rate cut, the upward momentum is likely to be rudely jolted.

Sarabjit Singh in deep coma, on ventilator support LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Indian death row convict Sarabjit Singh is in "deep coma" and has been put on ventilator support with doctors on Saturday saying that they won't be able to perform surgery on him till his condition stabilises. Sarabjit, 49, is in the intensive care unit of the state-run Jinnah Hospital in Lahore, where he was admitted on Friday after being brutally beaten with blades and pieces of a ghee tin by at least six other prisoners within his barrack at the Kot Lakhpat Jail. "His condition is critical as he has sustained severe injuries on his head, jaws, abdomen and other parts. He has been put on ventilator support," a senior doctor at the hospital said. Sarabjit's wife Sukhpreet Kaur, daughters Poonam, Swapandeep Kaur and his sister Dalbir Kaur would be travelling to Lahore on Sunday after the Pakistan High Commission granted them 15 days gratis visa. Sarabjit was convicted for alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990. His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and by former

President Pervez Musharraf. The outgoing Pakistan Peoples Party-led government put off Sarabjit's execution for an indefinite

period in 2008. Official sources told that Sarabjit was in a "deep coma" and doctors were unable to perform surgery on him yesterday because of extensive internal bleeding caused by a severe head injuries. "No surgery can be performed till his condition stabilises," a source said. The sources quoted doctors at Jinnah Hospital as saying that Sarabjit's condition was measured as 5 on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), which indicates the level of damage or injury to a person's central nervous system. The GCS comprises tests of eye, verbal and motor responses. The three separate values and their sum are considered in deciding a person's status. The lowest possible GCS

Meanwhile, two Indian High Commission officials got consular access to Sarabjit on Saturday morning. “The officials of India's High Commission in Islamabad obtained access to Sarabjit in the ICU of Jinnah hospital, Lahore at 2:00AM," external affairs ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said in Almaty where he is accompanying external affairs minister Salman Khurshid on an official visit. "Doctors attending to Sarabjit Singh informed the Indian officials that he is in coma on ventilator and receiving IV drip," he said. In the first official statement from the Pakistani government on the incident, the Foreign Office in

Islamabad said Sarabjit was injured in a "scuffle" between prisoners. "Doctors and medical staff at the hospital are working round-theclock to revive the prisoner, who remains unconscious and on a ventilator," said the statement issued by the Foreign Office spokesman. Security has been beefed up at the hospital, where dozens of police commandos have been deployed. He was hit on the head with bricks and his neck and torso cut with blades and pieces of a ghee tin. He suffered a skull fracture. A murder case was registered against two prisoners — Amer Aftab and Mudassar — involved in the assault. Sources said Aftab, who was on death row after being convicted of murder, had quarrelled with Sarabjit and attempted to attack him some days ago. Sarabjit's family said they had informed both Pakistani and Indian authorities about the threats to his life. The family claims that Sarabjit's arrest in 1990 was because of mistaken identity and that he had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.
