publisher’s page Hello and Welcome to Key West! Thanks for coming to our crazy little island town and thanks for picking up inkeywest magazine. The purpose of this magazine is to help you navigate your way around town. Whether it is your first time here or your tenth visit this year, there’s a lot going and things change more often these days than in years past. A brief history about myself. I came here over 6 years ago, like many others, on vacation which turned into this. I remember my first visit to Key West and how overwhelming this condensed 2 x 4 mile island actually is. With that in mind, we’ve put this guide together for you in the hopes it will help you get the most out of your stay in Key West. So, if you’re are here to eat, drink, fish, drink, get out on a boat, drink, drive around on a scooter [not drinking!], shop or just here to is sip on your favorite libation while staring out at the ocean - we’ve put this little pocket guide together for you! Plus, there are great deals in the following pages at some of our favorite places. Chances are you’ll see me hanging out at them as well! Thanks again for reading inkeywest and thanks for coming to Key West! Lawrence Bradley Publisher inkeywest magazine

a low lit corner of the bar at Bagatelle, owner Hassan Ladha discreetly samples flavored vodkas. Sniffing the shot glass & taking small sips, this is similar to how a master sommelier works. His mission is daunting – construct unique a martini to match the ambiance of the unpretentious, yet elegant restaurant & meet the expectations created by the extensive wine list while simultaneously paying tribute to the Caribbean-inspired French cuisine.

Behind the half indoor, half outdoor bar you’ll find Nate, the mixologist in charge of concocting these creations. This night, he adds a twist to their already legendary Espresso Martini. Everyone agrees the substitution of one secret ingredient for another has made this flagship martini even more unique, but Nate isn’t convinced, “We have to keep the original recipe – you can’t improve on perfection.” In the end, his opinion carries the day. Other must-tries include the Cantaloupe or the Black Forest Cake Martini. Fine dining at Bagatelle is the greatest. The open air dining room is full every night,

& reservations are strongly encouraged. If you arrive here without calling ahead, you might just have to sit at the bar for a while… If that’s the case, I recommend you try the powdered orange Tang inspired ‘Buzz Aldrin’ Martini. When it comes to Bagatelle’s extensive wine collection, Hassan lights up, his cadence quickens, & you can tell that this is a man who is passionate about what he does. “This is a serious program involving lots of work & lots of tweaking,” he explains. “Turnover on both the

martini & wine list is important to staying fresh.” Each one of the one 150 wines found on Bagatelle’s wine list has been hand-selected by Hassan, which is why the restaurant earned a place on the coveted Wine Spectator Award’s 2009. Stop by after 10pm every night to see what it’s all about & experience one of their martinis for only $6 or one of their many wines by the glass.

nowitz by Shayne Be While on your Duval crawl, swing into the Hard Rock for a little bit of rock ‘n roll, a juicy cheeseburger a cold beer. Here’s three interesting pieces that will make your visit more than worthwhile.

THE RAMONES’ BASS GUITAR

At the upstairs bar, you’ll find a beat up bass guitar with only a few strings left and a corner bandaged up with duct tape. The staff at the Hard Rock swears that this distinctive bass is the same one featured in one of the video clips of the Ramones that plays throughout the day inside the restaurant.

JOHN LENNON’S NEXT-DOOR NEIGHBOR’S SCRAPBOOK Upstairs in the Beatles Room, you’ll find plenty of memorabilia from Paul McCartney’s black suit to signed menus and albums, but one of the quirkiest pieces contains random knick knacks found inside of John Lennon’s next door neighbor’s scrapbook. Here, she’s saved an empty packet and a cigarette butt that Lennon smoked, a drawstring from his swim trunks, and a sketch of the house that he lived in.

KURT COBAIN’S GUITAR, STRIPED SHIRT AND YEARBOOK

For anyone nostalgic for a little teen spirit, look no further than the Hard Rock’s main dining room. Here, you’ll find a shiny white electric guitar signed by Kurt Cobain, as well as one of his signature striped sweaters. For an insight into his angst-riddled youth, the Hard Rock has a copy of his 7th grade yearbook from 1985.

Entre pre neur and Pirate Enthusiast

Pat Croce

Cecil Witt by CecilbyWitt

Pat Croche, once owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, & now owner of The Rum Barrel Bar & Restaurant & Pirate’s Soul Museum. I should preface this interview with a quick communiqué to our readers describing the kind of person Pat Croche is for those who have never met him. This guy is full of a genuine, positive energy that becomes infectious. His passion for anything pirate related is probably only overshadowed by his goodwill towards those around him.

Where did your love for pirate history all begin? When I was a kid, I was watching the movie “Captain Blood” with my Dad, Earl Flynn was the star, it was a 1935 film, & I was hooked! The more I learned about pirates, the more enamored I became. I just love the pirate mentality, their sense of flair, everything. It fascinated my mind when I was a little kid & it has never stopped. Was opening a museum a concept you’ve always played around with, or did it happen per chance? It really dawned on me after I had left the 76ers, in about 2002. Having been a motivational speaker, I’ve always told people to take action on their passion. So I was looking in the mirror one day & I asked myself what do I really love & what do I have that no one else has? I had tons of pirate artifacts that I had collected over the years, so why not put them all under one roof? So, my daughter & I went around to a lot of museums & Hall of Fames to do some research. We wanted something interactive that was cool, but not stuffy & boring, yet also very informative. Voila! 42 Dec ‘09 - March ‘10 | for a Key West taxi cab, call (305) 296-6666

You’ve put out a book “Pirate Soul: A Swashbuckling Voyage Through the Golden Age of Pirates!”, tell us a little about it. You can touch the pages & they change, pop open, everything. It’s very informative. A group out of Portland, Oregon helped me with it. I wanted something that can hold the attention of kids to Joe average to experts in the field & they find enjoyment in it. Is it true one of the reasons you own a museum is partly due to your wife? Yes, she was looking around the house, & I have this old, original, one-of-a-kind pirates chest. Well, I kept it in the living room. I’m sure you can imagine that it stuck out with all my wife’s nice furniture surrounding it. So, she helped tremendously in the relocation effort. She didn’t force me, but made me convince myself…?

How did you acquire most of your stuff? Through auction houses – big time auction houses!

I’ve heard you have some interesting dental work? I was in the dentist’s office many years ago & had to have a cast replaced. He told me how they could put “tattoos” on the implants. So I asked him to put a skull & crossbones on it! What is your most valuable possession in the museum? The treasure chest, that chest goes all the way back to Captain Thomas II – he was a famous Rhode Island pirate who was one of the first to sail around the Cape of Good Hope. That is the only one in the world that is a real pirate treasure chest! Who is your favorite pirate? Blackbeard! Blackbeard’s my man! This guy engaged in psychological warfare like nobody else! He was 6’4”, 3 pairs of flintlocks & a sword hanging from his belt, he twisted fuses into his beard & burned them to create a smoky effect. People thought he was the devil incarnate. People saw him, & they instantly surrendered! Were there any famous Key West pirates? Oh yeah! Black Caesar was probably the most noteworthy, but they all sailed around the keys. continued on page 43

Any other new projects? I’m trying to get a picture going about Blackbeard, we’re talking to the guy that was involved with Gladiator. I’ve got a Cachaça that I’m pushing very hard – Leblon. It’s used in Caipirinhas, a Brazilian cocktail. Do you dive? Oh yeah! I’m a huge diver. I had an opportunity to dive “Queen Ann’s Revenge”. They don’t take too many people, but I went down with the archeologist David Boore & Phil Masters, who found the ship – it was awesome!

Your staff wanted me to ask you who is your favorite? There’s no way that I’m gonna answer that question! I love them all! I tell ya, I have the greatest staff in the world! It’s hard to get good help anywhere, but these guys are the best! “ You’ve solved my worst

problem in life! What to get my wife for her birthday or anniversary.”

Raviv Grinberg, General Manager of Diamonds International, or DI, Key West explains, “Couples on vacation visit our store at 122 Duval to see what duty and tax free diamonds are all about. They are excited about the infinite possibilities of matching settings and diamonds to create unique masterpieces that do not cost an arm and a leg.” Diamonds International also keeps a record of your purchases so when that next special occasion rolls around, you can just call and have them confection a brand new set of accoutrements to complement your previous selection. “Our inventory changes quite often but we keep track of the different styles, which is very helpful for matching new pieces to old.” 52 Dec ‘09 - March ‘10 | for a Key West taxi cab, call (305) 296-6666

When it comes to purchasing luxurious jewelry, it’s important to understand why Diamonds International of Key West is different from the other jewelry stores. For one, it’s the only duty free jeweler in the contiguous United States. Diamonds International is a worldwide company that handles its own diamonds from the De Beers mines all the way to the display case, so there is no middle men. This allows DI to guarantee its diamonds for life and ensures you get more bang for your buck. It’s also essential to note that the price is fixed by Diamonds International’s corporate office in New York City, so the same diamond costs the same amount in all of their locations throughout the Caribbean. So if you are on a cruise – get the good stuff now so you can wear it for the rest of your holiday!

LOCAL DIAMOND CZAR’S FIVE KEY WEST ESSENTIALS “We have spectacular pieces from thirty-nine dollars all the way up to half a million,” points out Raviv. “Plus, you can always get an upgrade”. When you buy jewelry from any Diamonds International location worldwide, you can upgrade your purchase to something of higher price at any time – just pay the difference. For instance, a young couple just starting out may purchase an engagement ring and wedding bands that meet their needs and stretch their budgets today. In a few years however, when they can afford the diamonds and bands they wanted in the beginning, Diamonds International will can upgrade their rings by only paying the difference in the cost. One upgrade a year and you’ll have a rock on your hand bigger than Wilma Flintstone’s!

EVERYONE LOVES AN UPGRADE Diamonds International of Key West’s greatest stone is called the “Queen of Key West.” Only ask about it inside one of our stores though, if you ask for the Queen of Key West at a local bar – you might not get what you are expecting! Stay clear of any store with a hand-written sign that reads “Going Out of Business” in the window. When you rent a scooter, stay off the sidewalks, obey the traffic rules, park legally and go easy on the horn! Don’t sleep under a palm tree - a coconut blast to the head hurts almost as much as fire ants down your pants. Purchase your designer jewelry from Diamonds International. It’s a great way to remember the days when you were truly in Paradise. When you decide to search for that elusive “Queen of Key West” at Diamonds International you are going to find the most friendly, inviting and knowledgeable sales associates on the island. meet your cabbie Name, years in Key West? Steve Mellette, about 14 years ago, I came down for the warm weather - that & getting away from one woman & moving in with another one. What were you doing before? Through the years I had some photographic studios. I sold them & became a commercial realtor. After that, I was in Mexico on a photographic assignment. I stayed there for an extra year & bartended. Came back up to the ice & snow & said screw it & ended up here. Is this our first cab gig? Yep, never even thought about it before, but I had some friends driving, so I decided I wanted to get out of bartending for a while & do something totally different. But all the drunk people you had to deal with bartending, they get cabs too.

You bartend part time again now. I bartend at the Bottle Cap 4-10pm Monday & Tuesady & drive the cab Wednesday & Saturday 8pm to 8am. How are the hybrid cabs? Not only do they handle a lot better than the old Crown Vics, instead of $40 a night in gas I spend $12. Do customers get a kick out of them? When you pull up to a stop sign & it switches over to electric people think your engine died (laughs). But you do get people who only want the hybrids to be more green conscious. Any resolutions for 2010? (laughs) Not really. I’ve gotten to the age where I’m realistic about changes.
