Africa in Luxury

KwaZulu-Natal to Mozambique

Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province, also known as the Zulu Kingdom offers excellent warm-water and uncrowded waves amidst World Heritage areas, a variety of unique resort and camp stays, spectacular Big Five Game viewing, and an authentic view of the real Zulu culture. Your tour ends in the Southern region of Mozambique with a memorable helicopter ride above remote beaches and wetlands where elephants and hippos roam wild.

Proposed Itinerary Tropicsurf trips allow you to choose from guided or self-drive itineraries. Guided itineraries include an expert Tropicsurf guide who will drive, surf guide, coach and arrange everything so that you enjoy your holiday minus the headaches. Self-drive itineraries allow you the freedom and privacy alone. Only the first day is with our guide who will set you up with a Garmin GPS, maps and advice. Along the road, they will touch base with you daily to ensure you’re finding the best waves and that your journey is running smoothly. This brochure features accommodations that we believe are the best and most luxurious whilst maintaining a surf focus. In many locations, we’re able to deviate to cater to personal interests. The duration of your holiday is determined by you. On this itinerary we recommend at least eight nights as a minimum.

Ballito - 2 nights

Ballito is an affluent and wave-rich town just thirty minutes north of Durban Airport. Consequently it provides an ideal stop straight off your flight as well as a comfortable base from which to experience Durban city and its beaches. Most importantly, Ballito is home to some of the best beachbreak barrels in the country.

Ballito Surf

This stretch of shoreline is characterized by sand-bottom beachbreaks, reefs and even a secluded bluff lying on private farmland of which Tropicsurf has privy access to. The surf is consistent – especially between April and July. The water is warm most of the year, requiring a springsuit only during the peak of Winter (June-August). Otherwise it’s boardshorts, clean water and fun waves to be enjoyed.

Ballito Accommodation - Zimbali Lodge Under the forest canopy, you’ll find a charming and unspoiled nature lover’s sanctuary called Zimbali Lodge – which in Zulu means “valley of flowers”. Set within the serene confines of a fifty-acre coastal forest reserve, you will enjoy five-star service, with an unforgettable African flavour. The best beaches are a short drive away and the lodge has access to a full range of hotel amentities including golf and spa. Alternative Accommodations Oyster Box – fabulous and distinguished. (20 minute drive from best waves). Canelands Beach Club – beachfront, four-star in front of excellent surf.

Phinda - 2 Nights

Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve encompasses an impressive 23,000 hectares (56,800 acres) of prime wilderness land in KwaZulu-Natal Province. Showcasing one of the continent’s finest game viewing experiences, including that of cheetah and the endangered black rhino, as well as the ‘Big Five’ (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and white rhino). Phinda is a wilderness sanctuary where intimate encounters and rare discoveries are common. With unspoiled beaches, nearby surfing, and an abundance of wildlife, Phinda offers the perfect five-star, gamepark diversion situated right on our ideal surfing route.

Explore the pristine sanctuary of Phinda with a twice daily game drive accompanied by an experienced ranger and tracker team, eager to expand your knowledge of the wilderness and share in your wildlife encounter experiences. Explore on foot and get even closer to Phinda’s incredible diversity with an interpretive bush walk experience, or glide along the Mzinene River and experience the wild along tranquil, cool waters as you take in the vast wilderness around you.

Rocktail - 2 nights Rocktail Beach Camp is set back in the sanctuary of the lush Maputaland Coastal Forest, an area of ancient dunes, forests, traditional Zulu farmlands and communities and the pristine reefs and waters of the World Heritage Maputaland Marine Reserve. Here you can enjoy spectacular scenery, world-class diving and snorkeling, unspoilt beaches, a visit to local Zulu communities or possibly spot a free-roaming hippo while enjoying sundowners at Lake Sibaya.

Rocktail Surf The beach is a fifteen minute stroll (or short drive) from the hill-top tents. Directly in front can be some excellent beachbreaks. Swell is consistent, particularly April to July, and while offshore winds cannot be guaranteed, early mornings during this period do frequently provide clean waves. Or, enjoy a picturesque drive chasing other waves through the lush, rolling hills of the Zulu farmlands. A private speedboat can also be arranged to cruise the coast’s secluded surf spots. Our local expert knows the area intimately and if the waves are not pumping, try some snorkeling or fishing. The waves here may not always be perfect, but you’ll be privileged to surf in a stunning world heritage area – and to enjoy it all to yourselves.

Accommodation - Rocktail Beach Camp

This is an authentic, back-to-basics experience consisting of comfortable, en-suite canvas and thatch tents with rustic finishes. The camp consists of seventeen rooms all featuring en-suite bathrooms, open-feel, indoor showers and overhead fans and most with wonderful views over the ocean or dune forest. Rocktail Beach Camp also has a central dining room, bar and lounge with large wraparound veranda. A raised viewing deck just off the veranda has wide views that extend out to the ocean. The camp’s main area has a wine cellar, pool, curio shop and children’s playroom, complete with board games and other fun activities for families.

Alternative Accommodations Thonga Beach Lodge – an alternative rustic beach lodge.

Mozambique - 2 nights Our itinerary now takes us across the South African border into Southern Mozambique chasing the perfect, green walls of Ponto do Ouro. Mozambique is both peaceful and picturesque. The people are friendly and an enticing range of adventures await. Malaria is low risk where we travel and nothing like the severity of the Northern region. You’ll enjoy warm, clear waters, the opportunity to swim with wild dolphins and potentially one of the best surf breaks on the coast.

Mozambique Surf Ponto do Ouro is a long, long right point, peeling mechanically over a sand bottom that offers both barrels and nose rides to surfers of every ability. The warm water is a highlight if you’ve come from chilly Cape Town and the crowd factor is usually very low if you avoid school and public holidays. In fact on many days, there’s nobody out at all! The break is a scenic, 45-minute four-wheel drive journey each way. However the combination of excellent surf and the fabulous resort make the drive well worthwhile.

Accommodation - White Pearl

On a magnificent stretch of coastline, tucked behind casuarinas trees, White Pearl Resort Ponta Mamoli offers the ultimate in African barefoot luxury. You’ll experience elegant simplicity at this exclusive beach resort. Sip cocktails in your private plunge pool, indulge in sumptuous traditional cuisine, escape to the rich coral reefs with qualified dive instructors or swim with wild dolphins in the clear waters. Private butlers take the utmost care to ensure you experience warm and welcoming Mozambican hospitality.Your journey ends with your transfer to Maputo by the resort’s private Bell 407 Jet Ranger helicopter where you’ll marvel at the unspoilt coastline with free roaming hippo and elephant.
