e are already on the 32nd issue of INFUR and every time we put together summer issues it’s like we’re packing our suitcase for summer vacation. There’s an ineffable carefreeness in our preparations—we’re obviously inspired by the theme—and in this issue especially we enjoyed wending our way from the Hamptons and Great Gatsby glamor to the Faena Hotel in Miami. We then donned our skinny jeans, cold shoulder blouse and sexy

Manolos, grabbed a cross body bag and put on our brightest smile to sway to the frenzied beats of Rio, where the Olympics will be held this summer. We’re all set for some divine gelato in Rome’s historical streets and we invite you to join us. Greatest Hits SS 2016 By Valentina Visigalli

What to wear this spring/ summer? Like in every new season, here we are, looking for what isn’t in our wardrobe yet or trying to give new life to an old dress or an accessory that’s coming back into fashion, thanks to the coolest and à la page recommendations for clothing this season. Directly from the Spring/Summer 2016 catwalks, here are the hits!

The seventies spirit lives on! It will be a success next winter too – always very fascinating and characterized by a new sophisticated allure. But surely the nineties echo in summer 2016 too. There are allusions everywhere: from rave culture to minimalism and grunge. Anything goes. The slip dress –a real must– and jumpsuits, over-sized jackets and even fanny packs are making a comeback in the extraordinary fashion firm reinterpretations. Feeling a little Latin is very fashionable and Spain is definitely favored: ruffles, frills and á la Flamenco tops, details and brushstrokes of red that make us dream by Proenza Schouler, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Balmain and Oscar de la Renta. But the also revisited Victorian style is very popular: ruffles, puffy sleeves, high-collars, and loads of flowers. Take a look at Chanel, Gucci, Alexander McQueen and Erdem among others.

If the warm weather dictates comfort and simplicity in clothing, we can feel absolutely trendy thanks to the extremely elegant designer proposal: the Pajama look! There are the fabulous interpretations by Etro, Dolce & Gabbana, Loewe and Givenchy. Are details setting the trend? Shoulders are as bare as possible, necklines asymmetrical, stripes are thick and sequins are everywhere to add a little glitter to the summer nights –they really went crazy with them. Also make sure to have at least one white shirt. Accessories? Tiaras and crowns have been a real obsession on various catwalks –see Saint Laurent or Miu Miu– whereas for shoes the flat mule stands out in ultraprecious versions even when it looks very simple.

Givenchy

And don’t forget! Always spice up the look with pink touches! When it’s not the garment itself, add pink accessories, because if we are looking for one dominant color this summer, pink is the princess in every possible shade. <

T

he definitive monograph of the work of the sublime shoemaker Manolo Blahnik, one of the titans of contemporary fashion. This coffee table book provides exclusive access to never-before-seen photography of his designs, featuring more than 250 incredible iconic designs from his archives, showing us the inspiration behind his singular artistic vision. It also focuses on Blahnik’s most powerful relationships –from Diana Vreeland to Cecil Beaton and Anna Piaggi—as well as his inspirations—including Marie Antoinette, Spanish (Almodovar) and Italian film (Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard), the works of Goya and Velázquez and the Prado Museum. This publication is a personal look into the man behind the shoes.

This fascinating book reveals all that and more. Beautiful photography, exhilarating interviews and thoughtful essays by fashion writers, curators, and colleagues give readers a unique peek at Blahnik’s vivid and creativity-filled world. The temptation of fur to complete a look, to highlight a detail or to soften the lines is before our eyes.

C

aptivating, seductive, bewitching, fur details are on the catwalks even for the warmest season of the year. Regardless of whether they are an accessory for spring evenings, a trimming or mere distraction – even if many designers could not resist adding real outerwear – the suggestion for fur is there: a khaki variation stole by Sonia Rykiel, a floral coat and mink cuff on a Gucci suit, a collar by Marc Jacobs, a silver fox coat for Bally, floral coats by Dennis Basso and Oscar de la Renta. The temptation of fur to complete a look, to highlight a detail or to soften the lines is before our eyes. Maybe it’s because summer is not summer everywhere and we live in a world where the boundaries between seasons are becoming blurred… The only thing that matters is that we like it very much! <

here’s Cinderella, but also the Evil Queen; there’s the white swan, but also the black. Like fairy tales, Parisian haute couture’s proposals for this Spring/Summer season very often bring to mind dichotomies and contrasts— princesses and courtiers, fairies and witches, ethereal sprites and shadows of the night— with fantastic and extraordinary evening gowns. A melting pot of different styles for both classic elegance and a pop-song appeal, either to evoke the Roaring Twenties or the tough but still glamorous Thirties or to recall the charm of the made-in-Hollywood full skirts cinched at the waist like Scarlett O’Hara’s. Echoes of both East and West in enchanting works of art… The stuff of dreams. <

New Guru of style STREET STYLE AND FASHION ICONS INFUR / 44

By Valentina Visigalli

U

ndeniable sources of style, inspiration that influences what we are going to see on the catwalks, flesh and blood interpreters of the trendy looks for this season: the new ambassadors of glamor are celebrities, fashion icons and street style. With or without –very rarely without, we say– awareness, they outline the dictates that go beyond the Capitol look to wear. Many fashion brands are obsessed with it. Street style had long been courted by cool hunters, who searched for alternative trends through new proposals of products in impossible and far away from the catwalk lights places. But nowadays there is something more, because what is cool and what confirms the fashion mood ceaselessly parade in front of our eyes through the net and the social media. Billions of images of real people –more or less, we add– who dress and select from the myriad of firms and brands. Is there anything more comforting for directing our shopping

attitudes than being sure that this dress in fact fits the lines of our body perfectly? Can we not be sure that this is “the right one considering that such-and-such blogger has posted it? That celebrity has worn it even to go shopping?! Not to mention that during the weeks dedicated to presentations of the collections, fashion cities are attacked by more or less casual male and female ambassadors: fashion icons who arrogantly arrive informed on the new styles, on how to dress and on whom they must be with, wearing in advance what will later be seen on the catwalks, only apparently reinterpreting the trends. And if a brand can suddenly be projected in the world of new talents, and via them, what can we say? Nowadays the fashion circus is also made up of this and many (new) interpreters. Fashion goes beyond borders. And in any case, at least, the choice of which, among the many, irresistible attractions to follow is always up to us. Go on then! We can become new gurus of style! <

ith its vivid carnival colors and the alluring rhythm of the samba, Rio hosts the Olympic Games this August, but its charm and beauty can also be experienced through the discovery of a city with a calmer pace and an absolutely enchanting style.

Rio is color and flourishing nature so let yourself be overwhelmed by the splendid and lush tropical flora.

From the long sandy beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, which run from the south up to the characteristic peninsula dominated by Sugarloaf Mountain, continuing then along the Botafogo Gulf and then climbing to the most central part of the city, with the oldest quarters atop the charming Santa Teresa Hill, we get a feel for Rio de Janeiro or simply Rio. Far from the chaos and the crowd, enjoy the irresistible view of the sparkling sea and fine sand of Rio, one of the most famous seaside cities in the world, by staying at the Fasano Hotel, the choice of

many celebrities as well (www.fasano.com. br ). And to celebrate a symbol of Brazil, the swimsuit, in luxury, how can you resist shopping in one of the Brazilian designer Lenny Niemyer stores? Rio is color and flourishing nature so let yourself be overwhelmed by the splendid and lush tropical flora. You can’t leave without taking a walk in the luxuriant Botanical Garden, an enormous green park at the foot of Mount Corcovado, topped by the unique statue of Christ the Redeemer. In the quaint Santa Teresa district, among the Art Deco buildings and the mosaics in the parks, the rails of a now defunct tram, the bars and the restaurants frequented by artists and bohemians, we discovered Santa Teresa Hotel, a unique and special accommodation with a breath-taking panoramic view and the allure of a place well steeped in atmosphere. It sports a star-studded restaurant too: http://santateresa-hotel.com/ . A store of great charm – although in Rio there is no lack of the most traditional designer shopping streets – we’d like to recommend the Granado Pharmacia. The oldest drugstore in the city opened in 1870 and can be found at 16 Rua Primeiro de Março, but there are branches all over the city, all over Brazil and soon in Paris too. Don’t miss out on visiting and trying one of its beauty products, which for more than a century have been preferred by royalty and politicians, in addition to Rio’s citizens, of course (www.granado.com). <

She takes particular care to communicate the uniqueness of each of her pieces and the craftsmanship that underlies the strong design and style concept at the core her new Maskara clutch collection. She proclaims her profound Filipino roots by echoing the MassKara Festival that takes place every year in Bacolod, Philippines, a celebration with smiling masks that commemorate the past. fter having studied Fine Arts and Costume Design at the London College of Fashion, Greek designer Konstantinia Vafeiadou began to make hats and bags not only for the stage but for the streets as well. Her brand is called Blanc. With an affinity for beautiful and precious things, she loves experimenting with techniques to blur the boundaries between fashion and art. Her every hat or bag is a small work of art. Drawing on her knowledge of geometry and history, this independent designer molds her natural materials by hand to create luxury items that celebrities crave. With the unswerving aim of creating something you would be proud and happy to wear, she enjoys playing with dimensions, often producing various versions of the same item on different scales. Well done, Blanc! <

T

hinking of the term ‘jumpsuit’ and its reference to the one-piece garment designed for aviators and parachutists, we realize how different the meaning is today in the fashion context. An absolute must-have, made with the most sophisticated and precious fabrics and marked by the design and the lines of their interpreter – almost all the designers, we say – jumpsuits are the essential clothing items for this spring and summer. Choose from Louis Vuitton to Balmain, from Ralph Lauren to Isabel Marant, Christopher Kane, Chloè, Roksanda, colorful or monochromatic, daywear or nightwear, in denim or in couture fabric. <

Redone Jeans

A reverse revolution with something original and super modern.

Skinny NO MORE jeans now are

RIGID! N

o more spandex or Lycra in your jeans. Skinny, super-tight jeans, which were all the rage in recent years, are now making way for 100% cotton denim, a fabric more suitable to today’s slightly androgynous style. Rigid jeans then, but vintage-inspired with a high waist and zipper – or a little bit lower with buttons, as Levi’s instructs. Go for the straight leg design that ends just above the ankle. A reverse revolution with something original and super modern.

D

esigners have brought the biker jacket back to the catwalks of 2016. Perhaps it’s because it adds a certain je ne sais quoi, a touch of determination and strength, to even the most classical of dresses or to the more mainstream without ever being out of place. Perhaps it’s because the biker girl look has always had a charm of its own, or because when you throw it on, you immediately feel a sense of freedom and escape: jump on the motorcycle and speed away! But the biker jacket always appears to be in fashion. Vintage-inspired, revisited with different materials and enhanced in total black versions, it remains an icon. Every wardrobe should have one. <

Faena Hotel Miami Beach: Please, I want to be there!

O

n the ashes of a formerly derelict six-block district in Miami Beach, Alan Faena —the Argentine hotelier and luxury real estate developer— has recently launched a spectacular hotel: the Faena Hotel Miami Beach, a new addition to a new district. The opening of Faena Hotel Miami Beach on 21 December, 2015 also marked the inauguration of the Faena District, only the second such official designation in Miami’s history. Besides this wonderful hotel, this new neighborhood, rooted in art and culture, includes a Foster and Partners 18-storey condominium, a groundbreaking new art and cultural institution by Rem Koolhaas, two residential condominium towers designed by Brandon Haw and William Sofield and a Casa Claridge’s –a beachside guest house designed to be a

home not a hotel— not to mention the Faena Bazaar, a unique retail experience also designed by Rem Koolhaas. The oceanfront Faena Hotel Miami Beach comprises 169 guest rooms and suites and 13 penthouses designed by Alan Faena alongside cinematic visionaries Baz Luhrmann and Academy Award-winning Catherine Martin's 22,000 sq ft Tierra Santa Healing House spa, offering South American-inspired healing rituals. You can dine at Chef Francis Mallmann's Los Fuegos restaurant, which serves up a contemporary take on the traditional Argentine asado (outside barbeque), or at Pao by Paul Qui, a restaurant offering Qui’s renowned brand of modern Asian cuisine. The renovated Saxony Theater —a two-level theater and performance space— nightly stages Broadway-style live shows. What else?

Faena Hotel Miami Beach: Please, I want to be there!

Between invention and reinvention, Faena hotel has reimagined the historic Saxony Hotel, which was originally built in 1947 and reigned as the queen of glamor in the 50s and 60s, where Hollywood icons Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin performed and dazzled the crowds. An artful visual idiom that recalls the glamor of the 1950s is ever-present: stunning Art Deco appeal, old-world grandeur, hardwood floors, sumptuous Faena red velvet and cool blue-tiled bathrooms. Each floor will feature a signature Faena Butler, offering guests a point of contact and personalized service throughout their stay, and all visitors to the hotel will additionally enjoy access to Experience Managers, who will assist in designing the overall experience from pre-arrival planning to departure arrangements. Sun-worshippers of all ages will enjoy the palm-lined pool area and the Faena Playa beach club, situated on 100,000 square feet of pristine white sand. Compelling! <
