>Driving From/to Juan Santamaria The drive from the San Jose airport (Juan Santamaria International Airport) to Jaco will take about 1 hour and 30 minutes and is fully paved with the new highway in place. We suggest exchanging at least $5 US dollars into Costa Rican colones for the tolls on the highway. Ask the rental car agent to send you off in the right direction, which should be west on Route 1, past the airport. The first 13 km uses the same "old" route to Manuel Antonio. GPS devices might not be updated and will likely still have the "old" route so do not rely on them to follow the complete recommended route. Once on Route 1 - follow signs to San Ramon, and continue straight ahead for about 10 km. After the second bridge crossing, get in the right lane and take the next exit (Route 3) for Jaco / Quepos / Manuel Antonio. There is also a sign here for Punta Leona and Atenas. Turn left at the stop sign, crossing back over Route 1. Follow Route 3 for about 3 km. Look for a large Christian church on the left and then a soccer field and make a left on the road immediately after it. You are on the road to Turrucares. There are no signs and it's a secondary road, so don't think you've made a mistake. It's currently the best connection to the toll highway from the airport. Drive for another 3 km through this somewhat winding road. Once you arrive at the highway intersection turn left BEFORE the highway. Again, there are no signs here yet. Be careful as it's a narrow two-way gravel access road. After some 300 meters you will arrive at a roundabout. Make a right following the highway signs to 28 Orotina / Atenas.

Airport

Drive on the highway through 2 toll booths. Then, take the next right exit to Route 34, follow signs for Jaco / Quepos. This exit forms a loop and then you bypass a roundabout to continue straight to Jaco (another 36 km). Follow Route 34 (also called Costanera) for a while and you will cross over the Tarcoles River Bridge - there are usually a few cars parked before/after the bridge since it is a popular viewing point for the crocodiles lurking in and around the river. Shortly after this you will see the ocean on your right hand side. Pass Punta Leona and Herradura - you will see the Automercado supermarket on the right hand side of the road. Finally you will see signs for entering Jaco on the right hand side.

Great Friendly Staff

Claritas Beach Grill & Hotel 2643-2615 Honestly - For my needs, it was perfect. The rooms are basic - nothing fancy but great A/C, large fridge, comfortable bed, decent towels and linen, a safe just big enough for my netbook, no blanket needed as there is a bedspread when the A/C is on, A/C rooms face the ocean with lots of light during the day, the back part of the room is dark, but the only thing there was my closet and the safe. Service was exemplary. The bar/restaurant sits on the sand. Food good, great Pizza, drinks of every description made by serving ladies, sweet and efficient. Every night some kind of music - from Karaoke one night to live music the next, and much to my liking, often packed mostly with locals, rather than mostly tourists. So it was easy to get a real sense of CR and to meet locals. Yes, the music is easily heard in the rooms until it ends at 11pm, and it’s fine. The beach was a soft reddish/gray volcanic sand, easy on the feet, water at bathtub temperatures, the waves intense and not easy to swim but easy to body surf or to walk with feet in the water and to explore the coastline. It would be easy to spend a few days at Clarita's without going anywhere and have a great experience.

Tuanis Apart Hotel 2643-2094-Jaco Centro Loved everything about Tuanis ... This hotel was perfect, just 50 meters from the beach, quiet and very clean.. Those 3 days we spent at Rick's place were absolutely the best. Tuanis is just so clean, safe and friendly. The owners Ricky and Laura are incredible host and so helpful with any questions or problems you may have. So great to be able to park our rental cars inside the hotel grounds and not worry about them. The beach was visible from our balcony and we enjoyed watching everyone coming and going up and down the street. The Italian restaurant across from Tuanis was one of the best meals we had in Costa Rica and the ambiance there and at Tuanis was wonderful. The rooms are decorated so interesting...along the lines of "designer" hotels now popular in big American cities. We were a group of 2 mothers, 3 adult daughters and one extra friend. >> All the rooms at Tuanis were different and all good. Some had kitchens and some didn't. I would totally recommend this hotel, and would love to come back again!

This is a business that values its customers and will work with you to make your experience a great one. Horseback riding is perhaps one of the best ways to discover the wonders of the rainforest. They have some of the nicest horses and the best views in the area, come and discover nature at its best, all this at the private exclusive 80-acre property of Canopy Los Sue単os. The tour starts at the beautiful Herradura base just 10 minutes from Jaco Beach and Los Suenos area, once you arrive they will prepare everybody to depart on your journey, to the waterfalls and swimming pools, if you are lucky along the way you will have the opportunity to spot some great wild life such as: Tucans, Scarlet Macaws, White Face Monkeys. Upon arrival to the swimming area they will set up some fresh tropical fruits and water, and you will have some time to hang out and enjoy the waterfalls and natural slide. The way back is gorgeous.. really nice guides.. Great Waterfall ..private and refreshing.. Just amazing

I enjoyed a luncheon special of beef over noodles and vegitables and a great frosty homemade lemonade. The sidewalk cafe is great for people watching in the middle of Jaco. I can't wait to go back for dinner and listen to their DJ and live Mariachi music, I'm going to check out the large screen TVs' for NFL football. Bring on more unique gormet specials! Sportfishing Adventure

"Straight Up" It's says it all A friend in Jaco told be to try Bill's Straight Up Sport fishing Adventures. Best decision we made this trip, (I've been to Costa Rica 6 times before). Bill offered good pricing and the value was clear upfront...it included everything...no extra fees and even included lunch and drinks. They just made new addition to the fleet, air conditionned and all the confort needed when out there. The captain and deckhand worked harder than any other crew I've seen. They worked the lures, changed the baits and kept us entertained all while watching for marlin in the waters. It worked. We pulled in a 125lb striped marlin and had several other hook ups where we could have caught a few more even. Bill was a trusting soul as well. We forgot our cash. He put us on the boat and got us fishing and told us not to worry about the fee until we got back. We promptly paid him, but any other outfit would have told us to pound sand. Bill even gave my son a t-shirt souvenir =). They make the extra miles for your deep fishing, Great Captains, great crew.. Great fishing!

Land of the Guacamayas

Blessing from above Macaws are highly intelligent. Some may talk, others may not. Macaws love to bathe and clean their feathers as it seems they like to look beautiful.

Indigenous tribes and people in Costa Rica still think that they are like receiving a lucky charm, and a token of good fortune from above.

Macaws figure in the mythology of Central and South America.

Macaws are not sexually dimorphic, meaning that there are no obvious differences between the male and female, differences in morphology, size, ornamentation and behavior.

In the Mayan mythology, the sun god was represented by a macaw, which is a natural role for a bird with such brilliant feathers. The macaw is represented in many different forms of ancient Mayan art and artifacts such as painting, ceremony headpieces, jewelry and sculptures. Incas believed that seeing them was a blessing, and a true honor. Not many people or country could enjoy coliving with this colorful bird. 72

Macaws can live up to 30-40 years and some are known to be as old as 80. Thanks to their wide strong wings and hollow bones that aid their flight, they can reach speeds of 35 miles per hour. An adult Scarlet Macaw can be up to 84 cm long and weighs about 900 g. Macaws are social birds and need plenty of interaction. They can be very Loud and can scream at over 105 dB.

Ara Macao On one of the three superfamilies of birds > Psittaciformes

Gustavo De la Espriella Ugalde gespriella@gmail.com

Macaws are social birds and need plenty of interaction. They can be very loud. A macaw can scream at over 105 dB. Scientific Name Lifespan Ara macao 50 years

Ara macaws largely forages in the canopy, eating large seeds, fruits and nuts in trees. Their favorite food, at least in Costa Rica, is the almost-ripe seed of Terminalia catappa also known as the Almendro malabar, Tropical Almond Tree, from the combretรกceas tree Familly. Searching for the almond-sized and almond-shaped seed hidden beneath the

tough, fibrous nut, the macaw chips out big chunks of the hard fruit using the sharp edge of its lower mandible; once it hits the nut, it slices through the outer fruit and picks out its meal. Ara macaws can be rapid foragers and a flock of 10 birds can carpet the ground with three hundred of these fruits in a single hour as they look for the seeds.

“

We saw huge crocodiles really close to the boat and more tropical birds on this river tour than anywhere else. This made the day very exciting. We loved it! We saw a lot of great wildlife, iguanas, egrets, herons, ibis, crabs, swallows, both golden headed and crested caracaras, tropical kingbirds, hawks, mot mots, Brahma cattle, and most importantly several huge crocodiles. At one point in the tour our boat driver got out of the boat to lure a big croc close to the boat, and we were able to get great photos. =) Just amazing.. The tour guide knew every bird and had many interesting facts on most of them.He called a couple of birds in without a birdcall but rather simply using his voice. So simple... to do so.. This tour was well worth the price. Crocodile River Tour info@crocodiletour.com www.crocodiletour.com PH 2637.0795 CEL 8874.7641

RESCATE ANIMAL ZOO AVE C OM M ITE D TO WILD LIFE C ON SE RVATION AN IM AL RE SC UE S C E N TE R Z OO AVE

Zoo Ave changed the name of the center to "Animal Rescue Zoo Ave". We are a rescue center for more than 15 years, however, the old name, was labeling us more like a zoo. It is important that people understand that if they see caged animals in the exhibit, it was because they did not have the conditions for return to nature, "noted the Zoo Animal Rescue spokesman “RESCATE ANIMAL ZOO AVE” Center has saved many lives of wild animals that for different reasons have either been a threat to people, or people and their activities have been a threat to them.

All entrance fees go towards the costs of food, maintenance and care of these animals. We are now to be recognyzed as the largest rescue center in Latin America. There is a lot of animals in danger, and heath care to provide. Explained, Sergio Gonzalez, Director of Communications at Animal Rescue Zoo Ave.

Vista Los SueĂąos Canopy Tour

Hard to get bored at this place. Take a break and get online!! The adventure starts on a 15 minute ride aboard in a specially designed 40 passenger tractor to the top of the mountain Descending via a series of zip lines, 15 platforms and 14 cables that is crazy, distance of 3.5 kilometers‌..including the longest cable in the area of 2400 ft! The Vista people have a photogragher who will take good quality photos of you while you are zip lining. They also provided fresh fruit and cold water at the end of the trek. No wonder why the are first in the Trip advisor. Friendly and fun staff are very safety conscious and guide you through the zip lines and are there to help you on the platforms on the massive trees. They have designed the lines very well to protect these trees. This place is very well run but a few of the guests in our group were a little intimidated at times. By the end though everyone I saw at the base was smiling, laughing 80

and very excited about the experience. The course is physically demanding at times. The youngest child I saw on the course was about 10 years old but she was having a lot of fun. My daughters were experienced in zip lining before they went to Vista. They felt very confident at the start and found certain sections quite challenging, they were very thrilled by their rides. Adrenaline Rush I highly recommend this place. Very green and sustainable activity. Very exciting and if you buy the $20.00 photo disk you will have lots of great photos to remember your experience. TIP> Its better to wear running shoes instead of sandles here. They can tape them to secure them on, but its better to have your feet fully protected. We for Tomorow Sustainabla Tourism in Practice, by Costa Rica Dreams. Angling, one great pastimes, at Los Sueños, apply as a rewarding rule, the practice the art of “catch and release.” When done properly, it does no harm to the fisherman's quarry, and allow substantiality in fishing waters Responsible Anglers handle fish that are to be released with care. Fish are covered in a mucosal film that protects them from parasites and bacteria. Once caught and brought aboard, handling the fish with a wet glove or towel will minimize the amount of protective film that is lost. Fish should not be allowed to flop around or make contact with any surfaces inside the boat. If possible, keep all fish that are to be released in the water while removing the hook and avoid at all costs handling the gills and soft underbelly. All responsible anglers should practice proper catch and release techniques. Not only do these techniques help protect fish stocks, but they also present a great opportunity to teach younger anglers stewardship of their natural environment, and watermanship. Employing good practices it allows both the fish and the fisherman to come away and make a difference. Release for tomorow. CR dreams: 2637 8516

HEROES VACATION FOR 17 INJURED US MILITARY VETERANS Two days Fishing Tournament Jungle Rules” Billfishing tournament at Los Sueños Resort and Marina Hands in hands for those who give their time, health and sometimes their lives for freedom." Los Sueños was thrilled to host 17 injured US military veterans from April 7-11 for a Heroes Vacation. The soldiers were brought to Los Sueños through the Freedom Alliance Foundation www.freedomalliance.org, at the suggestion of Captain Tony Carrizosa. Thanks to the generosity of homeowners who donated their condominiums and boats, tour operators and management companies that gave away trips and services, and Bill Royster who provided all meals, a welcome and awards dinner as well as logistics, these deserving soldiers were able to enjoy a wonderful time here in paradise. The highlight of their trip was surely the two day “Jungle Rules” billfishing tournament, which resulted in 67 sailfish releases. Our sincere gratitude goes out to the many people who made this event possible and most of all, to these real American heroes. Defending the Tittle Gilbert Brown won the Copa Kingston in waves of incredible quality Reigning National Costa Rican champion, Gilbert Brown Lopez, won the Kingston Cup.

board semifinal and Noe Mar McGonagle in Open final.

Gilbert Brown Lopez was flawless in the final series and got its highest score during the day with 16.00 points, enough to beat Noe Mar McGonagle, Anthony Fillingim and Luis Vindas, who exploited all good waves, but Gilbert still better combined. "When you come to the final in the National Tour you know you're on a win or nothing "said Brown.

The situation in the Open Women between the three surfers, Leilani McGonagle, Emily Gussoni and Lisbeth Vindas will be defined in the Hermosa title thanks to wins achieved today by Vindas and second achieved by Gussoni with only 13 years of age. Lisbeth reached her third championship victory and fifth podium finish still behind McGonagle who already has six podiums and 4 wins. Meanwhile Emily Gussoni achieved her second podium and is putting pressure on the leaders.

With this win the three-time national champion reached two podiums and two quarterfinals accumulated. For their part, Luis Vindas and Noe Mar McGonagle, joined for a fourth podium so far this season, a situation that makes them strong favorites before the end of the championship that will close in July in Playa Hermosa, with the Grand Final Reef.
