The closest neighbour is Kiribati to the northwest and Cook Islands to the west.

Although the road transportation system is in place, the lack of an adequate public transport system requires the use of rental cars and taxis. The other islands can be reached by flight with the local Air Tahiti or through ferry service for closer islands such as Moorea.
