Dass der Rhein genau an dieser Stelle ganz markant seine Richtung ändert, erscheint uns wie ein Zufall. Auf jeden Fall beeinflusst es die Menschen und ihr kulturelles Handeln. Das Rheinknie ist die Drehscheibe zwischen den Landschaften am Hochrhein und den kulturellen Zentren am Ober- und Niederrhein. Deswegen sind die Basler so, wie sie sind – weltoffen und freundlich im Umgang mit Menschen und Kulturen. It seems like a coincindence that the river Rhine takes a different direction here. It definitly influences the population and cultural happenings. The Rhine knee is the turntable between the landscapes of the Hochrhein and the cultural centres of Ober- and Niederrhein. That’s why the inhabitants of Basel are the way they come across – friendly and cosmopolitan in their nature and behavior with people of all cultures and backgrounds.

Sometimes the Münsterplatz seems to be like a playground. It is a large, generous space, allowing enough room for inspiration and dreams – like pleasant meetings with people known and unknown.

The view is fascinating looking down at paradise earth.

Über dem grossen Tor des Reischacherhofes steht er noch und überschaut zentral den ganzen Platz am Münster – Isaak Iselin. Hier kann er sehen und beurteilen, was aus seinem Lebenswerk des Guten und Gemeinnützigen Basel geworden ist. Ein bisschen von der schönen Atmosphäre des 18. Jahrhunderts können wir im heutigen Restaurant Isaak noch spüren. Hier fühlen wir uns so richtig wohl.
He is still standing above the entrance to the Reischacher court, overlooking the whole cathedral square – Isaak Iselin. From here he can observe what has become of his beloved Basel and can get an idea of the results of the work he put into his city for the common good of the people. In the restaurant you can still feel a bit of the atmosphere of the 18th century. Here we feel at ease.

A small path down the Augustinerweg leads us to the Mittlere Rheinbrücke where we find the city’s most romantic places. The Rheinsprung is as if made for lovers and romantic hearts, and indeed this is the heart of Basel.
68/69 Der kleine Weg vom Augustinerweg hinab zur Mittleren Rheinbrücke führt uns mitten hinein zu den romantischsten Orten der Stadt. Der Rheinsprung ist wie geschaffen für Liebespaare und Romantiker. Hier sind wir mitten im Herz von Basel.
Spätestens jetzt, wenn wir abends durch das Martinsgässli den kleinen Platz mit dem Brunnen vor der Martinskirche erreicht haben, ist die Welt wieder in Ordnung. Hier finden wir wieder zur Ruhe, hier finden wir zu uns selbst.
Finally, when we have strolled along the Martinsgässli and reached the tiny square and fountain of the Martin-church, we feel at ease. Here we can rest, here we are in touch with ourselves.

At the back of the Rhinepromenade the path leads us directly to Kleinbasel. When we discover these little alleys, we find out one or the other secret. In this small part of town we find life in the streets that give us an idea of the past.

During summertime the historical Rhine banks are the heartbeat of the city, the place to meet for all Basel citizens. People from Gross- and Kleinbasel and from all over the world enjoy the riviera at the Rhine. Der Fasnachtsbrunnen am Steinenberg mit den unermßdlichen Kunst-Maschinen von Jean Tinguely wird erst am Abend und am besten noch im Winter zum eigentlichen Kunstwerk. Begeistert stehen wir vor diesen Figuren mit ihrem ganz speziellen Schauspiel und vergessen ein wenig die Zeit darßber. The Fasnacht fountain at Steinenberg with its moving installations made by famous Jean Tinguely become really special in the evening, when the lights are on or, even better, in winter when parts of the machines are frozen. Then they look most impressive. Gazing in amazement we stand in front of Tinguely’s work, forgetting time for a short while.

Was für ein Anblick – Green City Basel. Plötzlich wuchern scheinbar aus allen Ritzen Kräuter, Pflanzen oder einfach wildes Grün. Auf dem Andreasplatz ist der Wildpflanzemärt, ein Zeichen, dass der Frühling in der Stadt zurück ist. What a great sight – Green City Basel. Suddenly we see all kinds of plants and different kinds of herbs as well. Spring has sprung in Basel at Andreasplatz where the „wild plants‘ market“, takes place.

Town halls very often are red. In Basel the trams, called Trämli in Swiss German, are green. This results in a special complementary contrast and not just colorwise.

Seit mehr als 500 Jahren wird hier Rat gehalten. Ob Grosser Rat, Kleiner Rat, Herrenrat, Regierungsrat oder einfach draussen auf der Strasse. Von hier aus wird kleinlich darauf geachtet, dass vieles in der Stadt so bleibt wie es ist oder sich auch einmal etwas ändert – beides ist eigentlich gut so. Wie die Entscheidung auch fällt, wir als Besucher stehen fasziniert vor diesem roten Haus mit dem grossen Turm, der über die ganze Stadt blickt.
For over 500 years the town hall has been used as such. Whether the cantonal parliament or the city council, the so-called Herrenrat from past times, or as in former days the council held on the street. In the town hall things are kept the way they are or if needed changed for the better. Whatever decisions are made, we gaze in amazement at this beautiful red house with its high tower overlooking the whole city.

94/95 Wir befinden uns im Schaulager des kleinsten Museums in der grossen Museumsstadt Basel. Hier werden Sammlungen gesichtet, geordnet und fĂźr den kleinen Schaukasten in der TĂźr zusammengestellt. So ganz nebenbei ist der Aufenthalt in diesem Raum wie eine Zeitreise in unsere Kindheit und weckt bei uns Erinnerungen, die wir fast schon verloren hatten. Das wohl schönste Gässli in der Stadt sind die Treppen des Imbergässleins, das ausgehend von der Hasenburg uns hinauf in den ruhigen Teil des Spalenquartiers führt. Hier wollen wir auf den Stufen verweilen und einfach den Tag oder die Nacht geniessen.

Maybe the most beautiful little alley of Basel is called Imbergässlein. Its steps lead us upstairs from the Hasenburg into the quiet Spalenquartier area. Why not just rest on these steps for a while, by day or by night.

Basel ist eine Stadt zum Verlieben. Ob in das pulsierende Leben von heute oder in die verlorengegangene Zeit von früher. Ein kleines bisschen können wir noch eintauchen in die ganz alte Stadt mit ihren Mauern und Toren – auf Lithografien, Stichen oder im Antiquariat. Eine Zeitreise ist es sowieso. Basel is a city to fall in love with. The modern city with its pulsing energy as much as the slower rhythm from the past that seems to be lost and gone forever. But it is still possible to go back into the past a little if we concentrate and focus on old walls, gates, lithographs, engravings, or when we look for treasures in antiquarian bookshops. Zur Zeit der Herbstmesse ist einmal so richtig etwas los in der Stadt. Doch auch dann ist hier mal wieder alles ganz anders. Alles geht seinen gemĂźtlichen, traditionellen und angenehmen Gang. Hier erleben auch wir Grossen noch die guten alten Zeiten. During the autumn fair there is lots going on in the city. Similar but still not the same as elsewhere. Cozy and traditional, also we adults enjoy the good old times.

Die Szene am „Barfi“ endet früher oder später ums Eck im Manger & Boire. Hier schlägt das pulsierende Herz der Stadt. Das „Trämli“ quietscht mit seiner asthmatischen Glocke über den langgezogenen Bogen. Die Menschen in Basel lieben diesen lebendigen Platz, kommen einfach auf ein Bier vorbei oder besuchen das im oberen Stockwerk liegende stilvolle Restaurant. „Barfi“ is the nickname for„Barfüsser Platz“ and the hot spot of the city. The evening comes to its end around the corner at „Manger & Boire“ where you can feel the pulsing heartbeat of Basel. The „Trämli“ takes a noisy bend and rings its asthmatic bell. The locals love the liveliness of that square and like to come around for a beer or for a meal in the stylish 118/119 restaurant on the second floor.

Jetzt sind wir mitten drin. The Rheinuferweg resembles a busy open air museum. City people meet up in the shade of the avenue, enchanted by the atmosphere.
