Salt Content of Fast Food Higher in North America Than Europe, Study Finds Researchers found that fast food in the U.S. and Canada contains much higher amounts of sodium than either the United Kingdom or France. Washington Depot, CT (I- Newswire) July 26, 2012 - A recent study from researchers at the University of Calgary in Canada focused on salt content in fast food. They found that fast food in the U.S. and Canada contains much higher amounts of sodium than either the United Kingdom or France. Researchers looked at the sodium content of over 2,100 food products sold at Burger King, Domino's, KFC, McDonalds, Pizza Hut and Subway. The differences they found were often significant; for example, Chicken McNuggets sold in Canada contained 250% more sodium that in the UK. "Since fast food consumption is growing everywhere, particularly here in the U.S., this is something we need to pay attention to," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "The French are often cited as using more salt in and on their food, but perhaps that is not the case after all. It seems that here in America, more salt equates to more sales." "We believe in the protection and preservation of individual freedom," adds Tom. "However, this is one more example where our general lack of responsibility in diet and lifestyle choices may eventually result in government intervention as a 'public health initiative.' Considering this lack of personal responsibility and the fact that preventable healthcare costs are threatening to bankrupt our country, do not be surprised when Big Brother steps in to 'protect' us from our own poor choices."
