Mango Consumption Linked to Better Health in Two Studies Researchers found that those who regularly ate mangos scored higher on the Healthy Eating Index than those that did not. Washington Depot, CT (I- Newswire) July 19, 2012 - A recent study suggests that mango eaters tend to eat a healthier diet than people who don't, while a second study suggests mangos may contain a substance that has a beneficial effect on breast cancer cell proliferation. The first study, presented at a recent meeting of the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology, compared the diets of over 13,000 individuals between 2001 and 2008 to the Healthy Eating Index (HEI); researchers found that those who regularly ate mangos scored higher on the HEI than those that did not. Other mango- eating benefits included increased intake of vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and dietary fiber, while having lower intake of sodium and total fat, a lower average body weight along with lower C- reactive protein levels. The second study, conducted at Texas A&M University, discovered that a compound found in mangos might be toxic to breast cancer cells. The study found decreased proliferation of breast cancer cells treated with the polyphenolic extract and reduced tumor size and weight in mice. The researchers hypothesize that the effects of the extract might extend to the consumption of fresh mango.
