My Improv Reminds Motorists To Be Aware May is National Motorcycle Awareness Month for good reason. Many motorcycle enthusiasts are getting their bikes out of the garage for the time this year. Be on the lookout. Los Angeles, California (I- Newswire) May 24, 2012 - Motorcycle awareness is not just a good idea if you are driving a car, it's the law. My Improv Traffic School wants to take a moment to remind all drivers that may is National Motorcycle Awareness Month. That means there will be more motorcycles on the roads this month, many of them first time riders or riders getting on their bike for the first time in several months. In many states, automobile drivers must yield to motorcyclists for obvious reasons. While a car or truck has bumpers to protect it all a biker has are his (or her) bones and a helmet (although in some states helmets are still optional.) Also, be aware that driving laws for motorcycles are different than they are for cars and trucks. For instance, in California motorcyclists are permitted to perform a maneuver known as "lane splitting." This means that on highways or roadways where two lanes are going in the same direction, side by side, and traffic is stopped, motorcyclists can ride between the stopped vehicles. In a recent poll by the California Highway Patrol a number of California drivers reported they were not only unaware this was permitted riding behavior for motorcyclists, they admitted they had actually attempted to prevent riders from lane splitting by pulling their car closer to the car next to them or even opening their doors to prevent them access. Motorcyclists are not the enemy of cars. We all share the road equally. No drive is more entitled to arrive alive than any other driver regardless of what sort of vehicle they are driving. May if National Motorcycle Awareness Month because some drivers need to be reminded that they are not the only ones on the road. My Improv Traffic School wants you to be alert and stay aware because motorcycles are everywhere.
