Washington, DC (I- Newswire) May 22, 2012 - Capitol Hill Martial Arts and Fitness Academy-- MAFA-- announced today that 2012 Summer Camp for children age 3 to 13 will run for ten weeks beginning on June 18, 2012. Registration is open and spaces are filling quickly. Back for a second season, this one- of- a- kind summer camp drew rave reviews from Capitol Hill neighborhood parents and children following a successful launch in 2011. The 2012 camp season will likely attract young martial artists and ninja wannabes from all around the DC metro region. Martial Arts Summer Camp for children provides a well- rounded, age- appropriate mix of activities 5 days a week, for ten weeks. In addition to morning and afternoon martial arts classes, kids will enjoy free play, field trips, art projects, reading or story time (depending on age), and the ever- popular robotbuilding project. The youngest children, 3-5 years old, join the Tiny Ninja group where many begin to establish positive associations with exercise, movement and healthy eating that will go with them through life. Little Dragons, 5-7 years old, are introduced to physical activity in a fun and nurturing environment. The gymnastics and mixed martial arts curriculum helps to increase children's flexibility, balance, and eye- hand coordination. At the same time, it improves listening skills, increases attention span and the ability to follow directions. All of these things have been shown to have a positive affect on a child's learning and engagement throughout the school year. The Jr. MAFA program provides 8-13 year olds with an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Mixed Martial Arts training for kids at MAFA, is specially designed and carried out with parents' goals in mind, as well as kids' goals. This kind of family- focused approach puts such things as confidence building, self- esteem building, and increasing respect for self and others into the context of everyday activities at home, school or elsewhere. "There are many benefits to martial arts for kids," says Floyd. "Confidence, discipline, control, self- esteem, mental clarity and focus...those are just a few." Floyd, who everyone calls Coach Rita, grew up with brothers who were encouraged to be physical and to set goals that took stamina and discipline to achieve. Not one to sit idly by, she adopted those same values and applied them to mixed martial arts when she discovered them as a young adult. Today, she is a world champion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and helps other women learn to compete as well. Capitol Hill MAFA is the only martial arts school in the entire world, started by women exclusively for women and for children. This not only makes it a Capitol Hill, Washington DC treasure-- which it is-- but one in which the entire country can take pride and call its own.
