Elliptical training machines also give you a full body workout. The vertical handles of an elliptical machine work in tandem with the footholds, providing your arms with a bit of resistance. Elliptical workouts work great when it comes to weight loss. On average- because your body will be working at a much higher resistance to make the machine move (though you may not be able to "feel" the resistance)- using an elliptical trainer for an hour a day can help your body to burn up to 800 calories. Roughly translated, with proper diet and nutrition, that 800 calorie loss can translate to up to a pound or more of weight loss per week. During the cold winter months, sometimes it is difficult to get outside and ride a bike- or perhaps you do not own one. Indoor cycling routines are a wonderful way to build up your cardiovascular endurance, build muscle, and lose weight all at the same time- and you don't even need to go outside! As with running, it is important to build up your endurance first before embarking on a long indoor cycling adventure. Using an indoor bicycle for a half hour is a good place to start. Some indoor bicycles are mechanical and will allow you to set a certain resistance level for the pedals so that you can focus on strengthening your quads or your calves. Indoor cycling routines also involve your upper body and help to build upper body strength because you will be using the bike's handles to help keep yourself balanced.
