LaGrange Author's Book Hits Number Four on Amazon Best Seller List LaGrange author Scott Smith's new book "Legacy: The Secret History of Proto- Fascism in America's Greatest Little City" hit number four on the best seller list for local history books in Amazon's 4- for-3 book promotion on Nov. 2 LaGrange, Georgia (I- Newswire) November 02, 2011 - LaGrange author Scott Smith's new book "Legacy: The Secret History of Proto- Fascism in America's Greatest Little City" (published Oct. 19) hit number four on the best seller list for local history books in Amazon's 4- for-3 book promotion. "The response has been overwhelming," said Smith. "This book has made some people cry, and others have been outraged. I'm glad to see that my hard work is getting some recognition." "Legacy" revolves around a 1935 Callaway Mills strike that resulted in martial law in LaGrange. The book also raises questions about the influence of corporate power in local government and explores why corporate- funded racial segregation persisted in LaGrange at the Callaway Educational Association (CEA) until 1993. "Legacy" includes interviews with a past director of the CEA, the current president of the Callaway Foundation, and several Callaway Mills employees who participated in the strike. "Now I'm just waiting on the phone call from Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert," joked Smith, adding that he's only halfway joking. "With the current Occupy protests against corporate influence in government, this book is so timely that it just might get some national media coverage," Smith said. Smith, who is also running for City Council in LaGrange, will be doing a book signing this Saturday, Nov. 5, at The Book Seller on 819 New Franklin Rd. in LaGrange, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. On Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m., he will be doing a book reading and Q&A session at Vernon Woods Retirement Community in LaGrange, and he will be available to sign pre- purchased books at that time.
