Brac affordable homes on track
Twelve more affordable houses are to be built on Cayman Brac. The Sister Islands Affordable Housing Development Corporation (SIAHDC) will apply for planning approval this week, to build eight homes at the West End site and four at Watering Place, said Board Chairman Christine Maltman. Publishing the application forms and other documents as well as contacting applicants who have already submitted applications will follow. Working closely with the Ministry of District Administration, Works, Land and Agriculture, SIAHDC is preparing documents for the construction tendering process while the housing administrator’s post has been advertised. “We are on track to begin construction.” Ms. Maltman noted.
Expressing pleasure at the progress of this third construction phase, Minister the Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, JP said, “I laud the board and Ms. Maltman for staying focused so that construction of affordable housing on Cayman Brac can re-start soon.” During the December 2008 and April 2010 construction phases, a total of eight homes were completed. The Minister emphasised that her ministry continues to promote individual home-ownership at the best possible cost. “Given the context of current global economic conditions, I am delighted the board has risen to the challenge of providing construction under prudent financial management,” she commented. The Sister Islands Affordable Housing Development Corporation Background: SIAHDC was officially launched in January 2006 as a governmentfunded, non-profit entity. Its aim is to promote home ownership on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman by providing affordable options. conducting onsite inspections whilst the homes were being built. The board expects that partnership to continue during phase 3. Currently, SIAHDC does not have any paid staff but the District Administration offices have permitted Ms. Wanda Tatum to assist with office administration. As part of its review of processes, finances and plans for phase 3, the board will examine its future human capital needs. Existing homes are between 855 sq ft for a 2-bedroom and 1073 sq ft for a 3-bedroom house.
