It’s an exciting time to experience the auto industry as a slew of hot new models launch in every market segment. From high-horsepower sports cars to fuel-efficient hybrids and capable trucks, you can see what all the excitement is about at the Indianapolis Auto Show, now in its 100th year. The event promises to shine, and not just because of its major milestone. “We asked the automakers to help us by bringing their most loaded-up and special vehicles,” said Marty Murphy, the show’s general manager. “We continue to have new products developed; the competition among automakers is tremendous. Hardly anything is staying the same.” Sponsored by the Greater Metropolitan

Indianapolis Automobile Trade Association and presented by Huntington Bank and The Indianapolis Star, the auto show begins the day after Christmas and runs through New Year’s Day. Doors open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., but will close earlier — at 6 p.m. — on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. You can expect the new 2014 Corvette Stingray — Automobile Magazine’s Automobile of the Year — to attract large crowds. Other superstars include the redesigned Cadillac CTS, the Ram 1500 and Subaru Forester, Motor Trend’s car, truck and SUV of the year, respectively. With 31 brands represented at the show, guests will see many great rides. Important introductions for 2014 include the Lincoln MKC crossover, redesigned Mazda3 compact and BMW 4-Series. The Honda Accord hybrid, Ford Fusion Energi and Indiana-built Toyota Highlander hybrid defy fuel-efficiency

Lotus also joins the fun, and an exciting Subaru concept is confirmed. “Trucks are bigger and stronger than ever,” Murphy said. “Sports cars like the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger are popular. Fuel efficiency continues to be a goal and challenge, especially with government CAFE standards increasing. Besides hybrids, combustion engines are more efficient, too. There are really no bad cars out there now.” Beyond all of the hot vehicles, the Auto Show offers fun for the family. Camp Jeep is back. Professional drivers will take attendees across 22,000 square feet, complete with a dirt mountain and logs, to demonstrate full Jeep capability. State Farm also is bringing

Chevrolet Equinox STILL A SUCCESS

With a larger optional V6 engine and some additional content in 2013, Chevrolet smartly figured this was more than enough to keep potential Equinox customers happy. Why? Even after four years, it’s obviously “just right” for plenty of people. Clever touches abound in the design, including integrated rocker panels in the doors, which reduce entry step-up height. (They also help keep pant legs from brushing up against the vehicle’s lower body.) The interior is likely the Equinox’s best asset. Simply gorgeous, it includes dual glove boxes, easy-to-read twin gauges set in large pods and plenty of handy storage bins. There’s also a versatile split folding rear seat that can be adjusted fore and aft over an 8-inch range to optimize legroom or cargo capacity. A 182-hp 2.4L four-cylinder reigns as a base engine, with its 21/32 mpg city/ highway fuel economy. The optional 3.6L V6 with 301 hp outclasses every other compact tall wagon in the segment. It earns a 17/25 mpg rating — pretty solid given the power level. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with either engine. A wide assortment of standard equipment — air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry and power windows, locks and mirrors — comes in base versions, as does a 7-inch touch screen to work the standard audio system. Moving up into the top-line models adds climate control, heated leather seats, 18- or 19-inch wheels — the larger of which is now chromed on LTZ models —extra trim and premium audio. ●

HondaOdyssey

SIMPLY UPDATED

Of all the rivals to Chrysler’s Town & Country and Dodge’s Grand Caravan, the Honda Odyssey minivan is out in front of the pack despite its steeper base price. For 2014 the Odyssey minivan becomes more competitive. Upgrades for base models include a six-speed automatic transmission to replace the five-speed unit; the six-speed transmission was the former domain of uplevel trims. The carryover 248-hp 3.5L V6 comes with variable-cylinder management, which cuts out two or three of the cylinders under light-load conditions for improved fuel economy. Also newly standard are the Bluetooth short-range wireless networking, fourway power passenger seat, Expanded View driver’s mirror and upgraded audio functionality. These features are in addition to a power driver’s seat, keyless entry and cruise control. The resulting $150 baseprice increase still makes the $29,650 Odyssey a pretty good deal. With the sixspeed automatic, it now rates 19/28 mpg city/highway – the same as the four higher trims. At the top of the Odyssey heap is the $45,250 Touring Elite, with its self-leveling headlights, 16.2-inch rear video screen (bigger than the average laptop computer screen), 650-watt 12-speaker surroundsound system and new-for-2014 HondaVac, a built-in 12-volt vacuum cleaner. Visually, the Odyssey receives the type of midcycle updating that’s common in the auto industry, highlighted by a restyled front and rear, plus updated instrument and control panels. ●

Mazda3 Mazda

IMPRESSIVE COMFORT

Mazda’s redesigned sedan and hatchback models now emulate the midsize Mazda6 sedan and the CX-5 wagon, which means they no longer wear Cheshirecat grins affixed to their snouts. Instead, both have adopted Mazda’s latest Kodo — Japanese for “soul of motion” — design approach, which includes an attractive, less gimmicky grille. The rest of the sedan and hatchback’s bodywork is equally tasty from any vantage point. Like its Mazda6 and CX-5 brand mates, the Mazda3 benefits greatly from the SKYACTIV suite of structural and powertrain enhancements. The real showstoppers are the base and optional powerplants. There’s a 2.0L four-cylinder that makes 155 hp and 150 pound-feet of torque; the optional 2.5L four-cylinder peaks with 184 hp and 185 pound-feet of torque. Both are available with a sixspeed manual transmission (a midseason addition for the 2.5), while six-speed automatics are optional. Interestingly, both engines are closely matched in fuel consumption, with the nod going to the 2.0’s official 30/41 mpg city/highway rating with the auto box. The 2.5 rings up 28/39, but both numbers improve by 1

mpg with the optional i-Eloop capacitor, which stores electricity generated under braking. The system provides power for the 3’s various electrical components for extended periods while disengaging the alternator, which reduces engine drag. The driver is unaware that i-Eloop is operating. Mazda3 prices start at $17,750 for the base i SV sedan, which includes the usual

air conditioning and power-operated accessories plus push-button start. The base s Touring hatchback is priced at $25,400, but along with the lustier 2.5L engine, there’s considerably more content. Mazda can sell you a top-line S Grand Touring edition with enough standard and available up-level and safety gear to rival many so-called luxury vehicles. Regardless of your choice, the new

Mazda3 is an impressive piece of work to be appreciated by those who enjoy driving something sporty, but without the space limitations imposed by traditional sports cars. ●

Nissan Rogue

STYLE AND FLEXIBILITY

Since the 2008 model year, Nissan has driven a wedge into the compact tall-wagon segment previously dominated by the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape.

For its encore performance, the second-gen version makes significant strides in interior and exterior styling. The latter comes in the form of an available third-row seat. Sure, it’s tight on space back there and, when deployed, wipes out any semblance of cargo space. But it’s also there when you need it. Plus, it makes the Rogue practically the only small-and-tall wagon to offer one, with the possible exception of the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe. Physically, the Rogue has shrunk an inch in overall length — attributed to reduced front and rear overhangs — while the distance between the front and rear wheels is up by 0.6 inches, and the overall height is 1.2 inches taller. The sheet metal attached to the Rogue’s all-new platform is bolder looking than before, although it might not be as attractive. Perhaps that’s why Nissan is keeping the previous top-selling model around for one more season, labeling it the Rogue Select and selling it alongside the new Rogue at a lower price point. The standard powerplant continues as a 170-hp 2.5L four-cylinder. It’s matched to an improved continuously variable transmission with a sport mode for snappier performance. Nissan has focused on reducing friction and improving the transmission’s belt and pulley system for better operating efficiency. That seems to have paid off, because the new Rogue’s mpg estimate of 26/33 city/highway beats the previous 22/28 rating. All models — S, SV and SL — remain available with all-wheel drive. ●

Sierra GMC

HIP TO BE SQUARE

For 2014, the Sierra and the related Silverado each continue with their own style and attitude — though the “attitude” part is hard to define.

While Chevrolet positions the Silverado as a middle-ground pickup for work and play, in the Sierra’s case these virtues are distinctly separated. More basic GMC models accentuate the Professional Grade tag, and the pitch is directed at buyers who rely on pickups to earn a living. At the opposite end of the scale is the Sierra Denali sub-brand, which places a much higher value on coddling content. In either case, the Sierra’s primary identification point can be spotted in your rearview mirror. The entire front end — including grille, headlights, bumper and in-your-face GMC logo — are more massive than before and in total make a bolder statement than the Silverado does. Some minor sheet-metal differences exist between the Chevy and the GMC, but that’s about it. Even the pickups’ interiors share the same basic dash, control panel and available touchscreen communications center, which are a masterstroke of efficient legibility. Of course, as you scale the trim-level ladder, the appointments become more luxurious. At the same time, the cabin resembles something approaching a high-end limo, especially in the fourdoor crew-cab models. Improvements in aerodynamics, insulation and weather sealing help shut out intrusive noises. Just as a greater use of aluminum in fabricating various body panels and suspension parts has kept the Sierra’s weight in check, the three new engines also benefit. All use aluminum cylinder blocks and incorporate direct injection, whereby fuel is force-fed into the cylinders under high pressure. There’s also continuously variable valve timing for improved low- and high-speed performance, while half the cylinders in

V8 engines will shut down automatically in steady-state cruise conditions to save fuel. The V6 engine also runs on four cylinders in such situations. The base 4.3L V6 might have the same displacement as before, but it now makes 285 hp and 305 pound-feet of torque. The old iron 4.3 was good for just 195/260 pound-feet. Mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission, it ups fuel economy to 18/24 mpg city/highway. V8 choices include a new 5.3L unit with 355 horses and 383 pound-feet and a 6.2L piece rated at 420/450 pound-feet. It’s standard in the fancier Sierra Denali, along with a substantial list of content, including unique 20-inch chrome and a wood-and-leather interior. ●

Chevrolet Malibu

DRASTIC ENHANCEMENTS

Chevrolet gambled big time on the Malibu redesign launched for the 2013 model year.

It was a direction-changing model led by a powerplant lineup focused on fuel efficiency. Yet Chevy’s midsize sedan shed a few inches between the front and rear wheels, which meant it had less rear-seat space than the outgoing model. In such a cutthroat class — where competition is closer than ever — the move was a mistake. For 2014, the automaker has rolled forward all the changes it planned for Malibu’s midcycle updates. The company has gone a long way to address criticism. Exterior changes include a more aggressive front grille and lower fascia, although the Camaro-inspired taillights and rear end are unchanged. Inside, Malibu stylists went all out to improve on last year’s update. A redesigned center console now provides more room and storage, while engineers somehow used black magic to deliver another 1.25 inches of rear legroom without altering the exterior dimensions. Standard on all but the base model is Chevrolet’s MyLink touch-screen audio/ communications system. Its faceplate pivots upward to reveal a hidden 6-inchdeep storage area. The base engine remains a 2.5L fourcylinder that makes 197 hp. Yet it now features direct fuel injection and a system that shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at rest, then fires it up when the brake pedal is released. The latter, all by itself, is estimated to help fuel efficiency by 5 percent. Optional is an updated turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder rated at 259 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque, up significantly. Also offered is the Malibu Eco, which uses General Motors’ mild-hybrid system — called eAssist — shared with the Buick LaCrosse and Regal. The 182-hp 2.4L four-cylinder gas engine works with a belt-driven 15-hp electric motor/generator, replacing the traditional alternator. It feeds off of

Toyota Camry

KING OF THE CLASS

While the number of serious contenders for the midsized sedan crown grows more impressive every year, competition doesn’t really seem to matter to the Toyota Camry. It has remained firmly in top position for years, and the company can’t seem to build enough to fill demand. The Camry’s 2012 redesign included a pointier front end, chiseled front fenders and an accent crease across the doors and fenders. The windshield area was increased for improved visibility. Toyota claims there’s now slightly more passenger space than before, resulting from cabin-layout adjustments. Buyers can choose from four upholstery finishes, depending on the model. Options range from woven fabric in base models to leather with faux-suede seat covers at the luxury end. Revisions to the front and rear suspension were designed to keep the Camry more stable in a straight line, sharpen steering response and improve ride comfort. Very little was changed under the hood, though Toyota rates the standard-issue 178-hp 2.5L four-cylinder at 25/35 mpg city/highway, or 21/30 for the carryover 268-hp 3.5L V6. In the Camry hybrid, Toyota installed a new 156-hp 2.5L fourcylinder engine, replacing the previous 147hp 2.4L unit. The 2.5 and its electric-motor assistant produce the same 199 pound-feet of torque as before, but the hybrid’s net 200 hp has increased by 13. Fuel-economy numbers have jumped to 43/39 mpg city/ highway — a 30 percent improvement in city driving. Both gas engines operate with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the hybrid uses a continuously variable unit. All Camrys arrive well equipped, and the top-line XLE is understandably loaded to the hilt. The fun-to-drive SE comes with sporty suspension tuning, steering-wheel-

Kia Soul

100th ANNIVERSARY • 1914 – 2014

YOUNG, COOL VIBE

Some cars are surprisingly successful, while other cars have “hit” written all over them from the minute they leave the factory floor.

The Soul definitely falls into the latter group, due mainly to its funky styling, frugal price tag and fuel-saving ways. Oh, yes — and because of those cute hamsters in the Soul TV commercials. It also helps that the Soul is amazingly practical when it comes to toting bulky gear. For 2014, Kia has upgraded and enlarged the cabin to create more front head and shoulder room and has dialed in more rear legroom. More insulating foam was added for a quieter cabin, and the dashboard is updated to accommodate the available 8-inch touch screen. The Soul now rests on a new platform that’s 29 percent stiffer than before and accommodates a reengineered suspension for improved ride and handling. Outside, design details inspired by the Soul-based Trax’ster concept car provided the basis for a front and rear facelift, which makes the Soul that much more appealing. The rear lift gate was widened by 2.4 inches and is flanked by one of the coolest set of taillights ever installed on any vehicle. The entry-level base Soul is equipped with a 1.6L four-cylinder, which produces 130 hp and 118 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 2.0L four-cylinder in the Plus and Exclaim models delivers the same 164 horses and 151 pound-feet of torque as before. The 1.6 uses a six-speed manual transmission or available six-speed automatic, while the 2.0 is available only with the automatic. Base Souls feature air conditioning plus all the usual power amenities. The midrange Plus adds a fancier interior, including floor console stowage and a backup camera, while the Exclaim gets 18-inch wheels, projectorstyle headlights, multiadjustable driver’s seat and a cooled glove box. Optional for 2014 is a new panorama-style sunroof and leather seats — heated and ventilated in front — along with a navigation system and premium Infinity-brand sound package. ●

STAR POWER

Talk about contrasts. The previous Fusion was a smart choice, but the current version adds a certain star power to attract a much broader range of buyers. The posture of the overly upright and blunt nose takes some getting used to, but the overall shape — with its sloped roofline — is simply gorgeous. During the redesign, the Fusion abandoned its V6 options. But now drivers can pick from no fewer than six distinctive engines, including two Prius-like gasolineelectric hybrid systems. It all begins with a 170-hp 2.5L four-cylinder engine, topping out with a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine with 237 hp. The latter is optional but required for all-wheel-drive Fusions. In between is a 1.6L EcoBoost that carries over for 2014; joining the lineup is an all-new 1.5L EcoBoost. Both produce an identical 179 hp, but the older 1.6 beats the newcomer in torque by a slight margin. The big difference is that the 1.6 will be offered only with a six-speed manual transmission, while the 1.5 picks up the slack with a six-speed automatic. The 1.5 is billed as the thriftiest of the three EcoBoost options, thanks to auto start-stop technology. But in terms of fuel savings, the hybrid and Fusion Energi plugin hybrid are where it’s at. Both employ a 141-hp 2.0L four-cylinder combined with an electric motor to produce 188 net hp. The hybrid’s system allows for maximum electric-only velocity of 62 mph and has raised the fuel-economy bar to 47/44 mph city/highway. The Fusion Energi plug-andplay model uses the same basic tech as the hybrid, but it gets a 100-mpg equivalency rating, an all-electric range of 21 miles and a total EPA-estimated range of 620 miles. Available communications and safety content includes a lane-monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, parking-spot assist, and blind-spot and cross-traffic alerts. Inflatable belts in the rear seats are optional for 2014.. ●

Hyundai Sonata

SURGING STRONG

Now entering its fourth season — an eternity as midsize sedans go — the Sonata still finds itself a popular choice for sedan shoppers. Credit the car’s pinpoint-sharp looks and impressive powertrain choice for this continuing surge of interest. The Sonata’s base engine remains a 198-hp 2.4L four-cylinder — or 200 horses with the optional dual exhaust. There’s also an optional 274-hp 2.0L turbocharged fourcylinder. For both power and fuel efficiency, the Sonata hybrid received a significant upgrade for 2013. Although total system output shrunk to 199 hp from 206, overall torque was enriched to 235 pound-feet, up from 193. This was achieved by slightly reducing the gas engine’s output while increasing electric-motor output to 47 hp from 40 and enlarging the size of the 270volt lithium-polymer battery pack. As a result, the hybrid accelerates faster and, under light load conditions, can travel up to 74 mph under electric power. Overall fuel economy remains at 36/40 mpg city/highway. The hybrid also employs a six-speed automatic transmission — just like the rest of the Sonata fleet — instead of using the fun-robbing continuously variable unit of its competitors. As for gasoline-only Sonatas, the base GLS includes the usual power-operated controls plus air conditioning, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, heated seats and keyless push-button start. The sportier SE gets its own suspension settings, 18-inch wheels (16-inch wheels are standard) and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, eight-way power driver’s seat and fancier interior trim. The top-end Limited comes with climate control, power sunroof, heated front and rear leather seats, wood-grain interior trim and a premium audio system. A 7-inch touch-screen navigation system is optional on all models, while much of the Limited’s content can be added to the SE and/or the base GLS trims. The hybrid arrives loaded right from the get-go, but checking the Premium box adds a panoramic sunroof, touch-screen navigation, leather seat covers, backup camera, 17-inch wheels and a premium sound system. ●

JeepCherokee

RETURN OF A CLASSIC

Patriot: New usefulness Type: Four-door SUV Base engine: 2.0L I4 (158 hp) Optional engine: 2.4L DOHC I4 (172 hp) Layout: Front-engine, front or four-wheel drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.); continuously variable (std. FWD)

Following the Jeep Liberty’s retirement, Chrysler-Fiat’s off-road division has resurrected the Cherokee name — but with a significant shift in direction. Instead of the brick-like original, the Cherokee has some seriously modern sculpting. All by itself, the pinched and pointy-nose grille says plenty about the risk Jeep’s designers have undertaken to create the new Cherokee. Then there are the eyelet headlights, which would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise — until now, that is. The interior is as modern as the outside. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 5- or 8.4-inch touchscreens, depending on the trim level, which operate climate, communications and infotainment systems. Base models get a Fiat-designed 2.4L four-cylinder worth 184 hp and 171 pound-feet of torque. Optional is an all-new 3.2L V6 that rates 271 horses. It’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6L V6 that’s the base engine in the larger Jeep Grand

Cherokee and the Ram pickup. In the Cherokee’s case, the V6 provides a 4,500-pound towing capacity. Both engines are connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions, the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler product. Front-wheel drive is the norm, but buyers can choose from three different four-wheeldrive setups depending on trim level. Active Drive I — optional in the Sport, Latitude and Limited editions — is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, available in the same models, comes with a two-speed transfer case and is designed for off-road use with a four- or six-cylinder engine. But for rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension, skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a full-size spare tire. All four-by-four systems include Selec-Terrain traction control with five settings to match the ground you’re covering. ●

Ram HD: Continuously

Type: Two- or four-door heavy-duty pickup Base engine: 5.7L OHV V8 (383 hp) Optional engines: 6.4L OHV V8 (410 hp); 6.7L OHV I6 turbo-diesel (350 hp, 370 hp, 385 hp)

Though no longer a member of NASCAR’s various stockcar series, the Charger arguably was the only one that held even a passing resemblance to its racing counterpart. Even without that connection, the Charger remains an important member of Dodge’s lineup. In keeping with its racing heritage, a cold-air induction system was added to the base 3.6-L V6 for model-year 2013, which improved output to 300 hp. The V6’s five-speed automatic transmission remains in service on base Chargers, while all others use an eight-speed automatic that helps achieve 19/31 mpg city/highway, up from 18/27. A five-speed automatic transmission remains connected to the 370-hp 5.7L V8, installed as standard equipment in the Charger R/T. Both engines can be equipped with all-wheel drive with the active transfer case and front-axle disconnect. To save fuel, the system unlocks the front wheels from the transfer case when they’re not needed and automatically and seamlessly reconnects the front wheels when rear-tire slip is detected.

The 5.7 also tries to temper the engine’s thirst for fuel by cutting off half the cylinders at idle and during lowload cruising. Meanwhile, the performance-obsessed SRT8 gets the same 6.4-liter hemi (392 cubic inches) V8 found in the Challenger, Chrysler and Jeep SRT models. Pushing out 470 hp, the engine turns the Charger into a brash American cruiser. Thankfully, the brakes are larger, the ride height has been lowered and suspension firmed up to ensure the SRT8 turns and stops as well as it accelerates. For additional rumbling noises, you can select the Beats by Dr. Dre audio package. The rap artist helped tune the optional 10-speaker sound system to complement the Charger’s interior and the musical tastes of its generally more youthful passengers. For 2014, the number of special-edition trims increases by one with the new Redline package, which offers 20-inch black-chrome wheels, the aforementioned Beats audio system and a sport-tuned exhaust. The Blacktop and Rallye packages return unchanged. ●

CadillacELR

DESIGN-DRIVEN

The quick-and-dirty description of the ELR is that it’s Cadillac’s version of the Chevrolet Volt — a fancier example of GM’s advanced electric technology.

But this isn’t a case of the company trying to put Cadillac lipstick on a Chevrolet. Far from it, in fact. Under the skin, the ELR and Volt have a lot in common, but they’re wholly different products geared to very different audiences. The ELR clearly goes way beyond simply providing an electric platform and competent transportation, which are the Volt’s two main claims to fame. The ELR actually was designed to be a “halo” car — that is, a superstar — to show Cadillac’s design and technology capabilities. So what’s so great about the ELR? In a word, style. The Volt had to accommodate four people in reasonable comfort and fit strict price constraints, neither of which were factors in the ELR. The ELR essentially is a production version of the Converj concept, the star of the 2009 Detroit auto show. As such, the dramatic angularity of the Converj was completely maintained. More important, perhaps, GM seems to have gotten the message that the interior is the last place to cut corners. Drivers can choose from two available interior trims, including an optional Opus semianiline leather seating package. Real wood trim is prominently featured, along with optional carbon fiber. For tech buffs, there are “8-inch configurable instrument and driver information displays, offering four configurations ranging from elegantly simple to technologically detailed information,” according to Cadillac. Under the skin, the ELR is powered by a 154-hp electric motor (207 total system hp), which also puts out 295-pound-feet of torque, right from a standstill. That’s up from the Volt’s 149/273 numbers. The ELR is expected to accelerate to 60 mph from zero in about 8.0 seconds, a full second faster than the Volt.

The ELR has a range on electriconly power of about 35 miles, a bit less than the Volt’s, and has a range of more than 300 miles when the gasoline 1.4L four-cylinder engine cuts in to act as an electric generator. When you’re done for the day, just plug it in at home for the night and repeat. A full recharge of the ELR’s battery takes about 4.5 hours, depending on ambient temperature, with a 240-volt power source.●

Toyota Corolla

V31

MORE SIZE AND SIZZLE

For a small car, the Corolla has some big numbers to brag about. Consider, for example, that in 47 years Toyota has sold more than 40 million of them, operating 16 factories worldwide and shipping Corollas to 154 countries. The all-new 11th-generation North American version comes on strong with a bit more style — especially from the windshield forward. It’s nothing too radical, mind you, but just enough design drama to create some politely muffled oohs and ahhs. The new Corolla shines in passenger accommodations and comfort. The car has grown about 4 inches in overall length and in distance between the front and rear wheels. A slightly wider cabin also contributes to more passenger space. Interior styling has improved, but in a conservative way that differs from more daring competitors. Likewise, engine choices eschew anything performance-related. A 132-hp four-cylinder carries over from the previous generation and is connected to a six-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic is optional for the base L; a new continuously variable unit is optional for the LE and S, but standard for the new LE Eco. To reduce that “rubber band” sensation of varying engine speed so prevalent with CVT applications, Toyota’s engineers added seven artificial shift points that function automatically — or can be controlled through mounted paddle shifters — to simulate the action of a regular automatic transmission. The LE Eco is equipped with a 140-hp version of the 1.8 that’s rated at 30/42 mpg city/highway, compared to the base 1.8’s 29/38 numbers with the CVT. Aside from a more efficient engine with special variable valve timing, those figures are achieved with the help of underbody panels that improve the car’s aerodynamics — and reduce highway-speed fuel consumption. As before, entry-level Corollas come with air conditioning and basic comfort items, but the LE also includes climate and cruise control, touch-screen audio communications interface and a backup camera. S versions add sport bucket seats, sport suspension and 17-inch wheels. Of course, a wide assortment of comfort, communications and crash-mitigating safety options are offered for each model. ●

Mazda6 Mazda

CREATIVITY MEETS COURAGE

Always the rebel, Mazda has a reputation for going against the grain in product development.

The automaker refuses to offer a hybrid powertrain option, which is tantamount to sacrilege. Instead, it pursues internalcombustion-engine refinement under the SKYACTIV label. From most angles, the Mazda6 is more expressive than the previous car and closely resembles Mazda’s Shinari and Takeri concept cars. The distance between the front and rear wheels has been increased by about 2 inches — the longest among its direct competitors, claims Mazda — for extra passenger room. Overall length has been reduced by about the same amount. The base engine is a 2.5L four-cylinder that makes 184 hp and 185 pound-feet of torque. The uniqueness of the new fourcylinder is its higher-than-usual 13-to-1 compression ratio, which gives the engine extra punch. In addition, its specialized components, including the pistons and direct fuel-injection system — which cools the combustion chambers to allow the higher compression — means it can run on regular-grade fuel. Available in early 2014 will be a 2.2L four-cylinder turbo-diesel with 173 hp and 310 pound-feet of torque. Transmission

choices for both include a six-speed manual that uses a MX-5 Miata-inspired short-throw shifter, or the optional sixspeed automatic. The base Sport model comes with the usual power and comfort ingredients. Adding the automatic transmission to the Sport also gets you a touch-screen display, a rearview camera and Bluetooth short-range networking. The midlevel

Touring increases the content level with dual-zone climate control, power driver’s seat and 19-inch wheels (17-inchers are standard), while the Grand Touring bulks up with standard navigation, premium Bose-brand sound system and laserguided speed control, which applies the brakes when a potential rear-end collision appears imminent.

Among the more interesting options is Mazda’s Intelligent Energy Loop. The system’s compact capacitor stores energy from the alternator, and then feeds it directly to the car’s numerous electrical components. Mazda claims the i-ELOOP cuts fuel consumption by about 5 percent. ●

Chevrolet Impala A BIG LEAP AHEAD

Volt: Charging ahead Type: Four-door hatchback sedan Engine: 111-kW (150 hp) electric motor plus 60-kW (80 hp) 1.4L DOHC gasoline-generator engine Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel drive Transmission: Single-speed controller

It’s been years in the making, but General Motors finally pushed the reset button on one of its most endearing brands. Chevrolet’s enhanced flagship now shares a platform with Cadillac’s top-positioned XTS, but with a far more broad-shouldered and defined appearance. There’s more to admire inside with a highly sculpted gauge layout and control panel. An available 8-inch touch-screen above the audio and ventilation controls provides access to the Impala’s navigation, phone and infotainment systems. It also flips up to reveal a secret compartment for small valuables and a USB music device or smart phone, which plugs right in. The Impala features some serious cabin-noise abatement, including active noise cancellation for fourcylinder models. It uses hidden microphones and a special control module to create opposing sound waves, which are sent through the speakers to cancel out low-enginespeed droning. The four-cylinder reference might shock diehard Impala fans, who never would imagine such an

engine in a full-size sedan. Fact is, two are available: a base 195-hp 2.5L and a 182-hp 2.4L eAssist powerplant. The latter works in tandem with a belt-driven, liquidcooled 15-hp electric motor/generator, which replaces the traditional alternator and feeds off of a lithium-ion battery pack behind the rear seat. There’s also a stop-start system that kills the engine when the vehicle is stationary and refires it when the brake is released. Regenerative braking creates electricity while slowing down, which helps recharge the batteries. Offered in other GM sedans, eAssist gives the Impala a fuel-economy rating of 25/35 mpg city/highway, compared to a 21/31 estimate for the base 2.5. For maximum potency, a 305-hp 3.6L V6 — the sole engine choice on the previous Impala — is optional. A six-speed automatic transmission connects to all. The base Impala LS includes the air, cruise and tilt basics plus 10 standard airbags; the midgrade LT significantly ups content levels. The LTZ will provide a luxury experience, with leather seats, power sunroof, navigation and other goodies. ●

Kia Optima

KEEPING IT FRESH The Optima drops to second place in Kia’s sedan hierarchy now that the larger Cadenza has arrived.

But Kia is keeping the Optima fresh for 2014 with an updated front end that includes a slightly enlarged grille. In back there’s a revised trunk lid and a lower bumper area where the exhaust exits. Inside, the seat fabrics are upgraded and the dashboard updated with a larger highresolution touch screen for the optional navigation and communications systems. Finally, the Optima offers blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alerts when backing up. The Optima shares the related Hyundai Sonata’s range of four-cylinder engines. The entry point is a 2.4-liter unit that produces a very healthy 200 horsepower, while an optional 274-hp turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine quenches your thirst for thrust. The Optima hybrid’s electric motor makes 47 hp (up from 40), supplied by a 47-kW lithium-polymer battery pack. Although total system output has dropped to 199 hp from 206, available torque has increased to 235 pound-feet from 195. Note that a sixspeed automatic transmission is used on the hybrid and both gas engines. Fuel economy for the hybrid remains nearly the same at 35/39 mpg city/highway, better than the 2.4 gas engine’s 24/35 rating. The hybrid also can travel up to 60 mph without assistance from its gas-engine partner. With four trim levels — base LX, EX, SX and SX-T — the Optima ranges far and wide to satisfy a variety of budgets. Throw in the car’s classy looks and 10-year/100,000-mile warranty and it’s a lock for a variety of Optima customers. ●

Buick Encore

BIG PERFORMANCE, SMALL SIZE

How did Buick proclaim that its past focus on size-size-size was long gone? By introducing the tidy little Encore. Don’t let its small dimensions fool you: The Encore is a uniquely practical tall wagon that can hold lots of gear while holding its own in the horsepower and fuel-consumption departments. Also adding to its versatility is available all-wheel drive. From the oval-shaped “waterfall” grille to the tip of its two-tone bumper, the Encore features a neat blend of stylish design cues with just a hint of ruggedness. The Encore uses the same platform as Buick’s Verano sedan and Chevrolet’s Cruze and Sonic small cars. Yet it’s about 7 inches longer and 5 inches taller than the Sonic hatchback, which provides far more cargo room with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The front passenger seat folds flat so that ladders and building materials can be accommodated more easily. The cabin receives one of Buick’s more fashionable interiors. It has active noise cancellation, which uses ceiling-mounted microphones to detect engine sounds. A special computer then dishes out counteracting sound waves through the audio system. It’s pleasantly surprising that Buick would select the Encore as the initial recipient of this tech. Standard is a 1.4L turbocharged fourcylinder engine that generates 138 hp and 148 pound-feet of torque. Base cars arrive with the usual air, cruise, tilt and power accessories, plus 10 airbags and standard 18-inch wheels. From that point, you can select dual-zone climate control, a power sunroof, navigation system, leathertrimmed interior, power-adjustable driver’s chair, heated steering wheel and premium Bose sound system, to name a few. ●

NissanAltima

MADE TO COMPETE

In the most competitive market segment around, the fifthgeneration Altima makes a good case for itself. Its graceful shape is sure to find favor with potential owners, while the well-appointed interior features NASA-inspired “zero-gravity” front seats for greater comfort.

Specs Type: Four-door sedan Base engine: 2.5L DOHC I4 (182 hp) Optional engine: 3.5L DOHC V6 (270 hp) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.) MPG (city/hwy): 27/38 (2.5, CVT) Safety: Front, side-impact, side-curtain airbags; antilock brakes; stability and traction control

Xterra: Rough and tumble

Cabin noise is reduced by sound-absorbing materials around the instrument panel, floor, roof and upgraded engine mounts, which improve isolation. The base 2.5L four-cylinder delivers 182 hp, while a continuously variable transmission offers fewer moving parts, significantly reduced friction and electronic-control improvements to more closely mimic a traditional multispeed automatic. Nissan claims fuel performance of 27/38 mpg city/highway, compared with 23/32 for the previous model. Those numbers also beat current four-cylinder versions of the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata and Honda Accord. The Altima’s optional 270-hp 3.5L V6 remains unchanged. But it also benefits from the same CVT upgrade and is now rated at 22/30 mpg city/highway (previously 20/27). Altima boasts Active Understeer Control, which applies light braking pressure to the inside wheel in a corner to counteract the car’s natural tendency to continue in a straight line. Also assisting the driver is Nissan’s Easy Fill Tire Alert, which initially was installed in the Quest minivan. So that you don’t have to decipher your tire pressure gauge — especially daunting at night — your horn will sound when the correct inflation is reached. The Altima’s headlights automatically turn on after the wipers complete four cycles, which helps other drivers see you during downpour conditions. There are actually seven Altima trims, but for 2014 several add-on packages have been introduced, renamed or changed. Still, nothing changes the car’s desirability. ●

Hyundai Elantra

EVOLVING PERFORMANCE

The Elantra entered the compact category a quarter-century ago and has evolved into a fine line of sedan, coupe and hatchback models.

The latest coupe and hatchback were launched for the 2013 model year, while a midcycle refresh of the sedan is in the works for 2014. The coupe and hatchback closely mimic the swoops-and-swirls theme of the current sedan,

while also emulating the more aggressive nose of the Veloster turbo. Blacked-out grilles and unique wheel designs are another differentiator. But from the back, the coupe is awfully similar to the sedan and identical in interior and exterior dimensions. The GT is slightly shorter, but its expanded cargo area allows for 23 cubicfeet of room, with the rear seats up and more than 50 with them folded flat. The Elantra’s 1.8L four-cylinder engine puts out 148 hp (145 in states requiring partial-zeroemissions tuning) and is rated at 28/38 mpg city/highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. Both carryover models share a similar dashboard and cabin design — a genuine work of art. Base Elantra sedans and coupes include the usual power-operated assortment, a six-speaker audio system, air conditioning and cruise control. Stepping up to Limited/SE adds leather seats — heated in front and back — power sunroof, cruise control, telescopic steering wheel, fog lights, Bluetooth

hands-fee communications and 17-inch wheels. The relatively brief list of options includes keyless push-button start, automatic headlights, premium 360-watt sound package and a touch-screen navigation system with rearview camera. By contrast, the GT comes in one flavor: nearly loaded. The big options include the automatic transmission, a style package with 17-inch wheels and stickier tires, sportier suspension, sunroof, leather seats and details, and power driver’s seat. The tech package builds higher with navigation, auto headlights, rear-view camera, dual climate control and keyless ignition. ● Elantra hatchback

Cruze Chevrolet

AGAINST THE GRAIN

Not content to offer only a gassipping Eco model, Chevrolet is going against the grain by introducing a new turbo-diesel engine for its compact Cruze sedan.

The Clean Turbo-Diesel engine offers more horsepower and torque — 151 and 264, respectively — than either of the gasoline engines, and the latter figure can reach 280 pound-feet for brief bursts of flat-out acceleration. While the 0-to-60mph time in the mid-eight-second range will be enjoyed by some, everyone will appreciate the 700-plus-mile cruising range, thanks to a headline 46-mpg highway fuel-economy figure. The diesel comes one way only: starting at $25,700, with equipment equivalent to a 2LT trim in regular Cruzes. That means niceties like leather seats, heated front seats, a nicer instrument cluster with chrome trim, 17-inch wheels, rear spoiler and more. Most Cruze trims include the MyLink radio, voice recognition and compatibility with Pandora Internet radio. A 7-inch color touch-screen stereo with navigation

and USB port can be had in virtually every model, while driver convenience packages on most trims include useful options like power seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors and rear-vision camera. The rest of the interior remains a highly attractive seating area that wouldn’t look out of place in a more expensive sedan. The Cruze’s standard and optional powerplants are diminutive but more than adequate. The base car is equipped with a 1.8L four-cylinder that produces 138 hp and 123 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the LT and LTZ, and you’ll get and a smaller — less is more here — 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder that’s also rated at 138 hp but with 25 poundfeet more torque. The 1.8 offers a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo is available only with the automatic. Continuing unchanged is the Eco model, which uses the turbo engine with low-rolling-resistance tires, tweaks to the aerodynamics and other fuel-saving measures. The result? Fuel-economy ratings of 28/42 mpg city/highway with taller ratios in the six-speed manual and

a still-impressive 26/39 with the automatic. All Cruze models feature 10 airbags, while the standard stability control includes a rollover-sensing program that deploys the airbags if it detects the car is about to tip over. Notable safety options include available rear park assist, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, which is useful when backing out in a busy parking lot. ●

MazdaCX-5

SMILE-INDUCING FUN

Mazda’s divorce several years ago from Ford was the best thing for both partners, really.

Rather than sharing their respective next-generation small wagons — as had been done for a decade — they’re now fierce competitors. The five-passenger CX-5’s mechanical bits are promoted under the SKYACTIV name, which made its appearance with the 2012 Mazda3. More than a mere marketing slogan, SKYACTIV represents a holistic transformation of the powertrain and various other components that help save fuel and make Mazda a better driving machine. From a chassis and suspension perspective, the automaker’s engineers have attempted to add as much MX-5 Miata-type sporty behavior as possible, combined with highly efficient engines and transmissions. The base powerplant consists of a high-compression 2.0L four-cylinder that, due to its unique design, can run on low-grade 87-octane fuel. Output is rated at 155 hp and 150 pound-feet of torque. Fuel consumption is pegged at 26/35 mpg city/highway for front-wheel-drive, manual-transmission models, or 26/32 with the optional sixspeed automatic. To stop complaints about its lack of verve, Mazda has added an optional 2.5L

four-cylinder for 2014. It has 184 horses and 185 pound-feet of torque. It doesn’t penalize much at the pump either, being rated only 1 mpg worse than the 2.0. Both sets of numbers beat league-leaders Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. Mazda hasn’t scrimped loading up even the most basic CX-5 Sport model. For $21,500, you get the usual air

conditioning and power-operated items, along with cruise control and push-button start. Moving up to the Touring gets you Bluetooth audio/communications connectivity, upgraded seats, color display monitor, steering-wheel-mounted controls and a blind-spot warning system. The Grand Touring adds a moon roof, leather seat covers (heated in front),

power-adjustable driver’s seat and dualzone climate control. Also new for the 2014 model year is active smart braking technology, which can see stopped cars in front and slow the vehicle before a collision. ●

Kia Sorento UNEXPECTED NEWNESS

Kia’s current design renaissance encompasses the Soul wagon, Optima sedan and smaller Forte and Rio models. You can place the currentgeneration Sorento on that list now, too. For 2014, the Sorento tall wagon receives a minor nose job, including the ubiquitous mesh-style grille, updated headlights and optional fog lights, plus new taillight lenses. Kia also has mounted the Sorento on a platform that’s 18 percent stiffer than the 2013 version. There’s a stouter subframe to hold the powertrain more firmly in place and a new independent front suspension. In back, a more compact rear suspension adds interior space and reduces cabin noise and vibration. Inside there’s a new instrument panel and center control stack with

easier-to-find buttons and knobs. Under the hood, the previous standard — a 175-hp 2.4L four-cylinder powerplant — is replaced by the previously optional 191-hp 2.4L four-cylinder with direct injection. Fuel is sprayed under very high pressure directly into the combustion chamber instead of through the intake manifold. This means more complete combustion for added power and fuel economy. Optional is a 290-hp 3.3L V6. With either engine, a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls is the sole shifter. The available all-wheel drive hardware is a full-time unit that constantly varies the torque to all four wheels and can direct power to the outer wheels in highspeed turning situations for added control (known as torque vectoring). Along with the existing LX, EX and SX/SX-L trims, Kia has added a new SX Limited model,

which includes a wood-trimmed interior with ventilated soft leather-covered seats on the inside and self-leveling headlights and exclusive 19-inch wheels (17- and 18-inch rims adorn lesser Sorentos). The options list contains a power lift gate, panoramic sunroof, advanced voice-activated communications, infotainment and navigation controls — incorporating an 8-inch touch-screen — and a blind-spot monitoring system that constantly tracks vehicles in the immediate vicinity and issues audible and visual alerts if any get too close. ●

AcuraMDX

HOW DOES ACURA DO IT?

This premium-grade seven-passenger wagon shares nothing with its predecessor and breaks new ground in content, technology and fuel efficiency.

Of course, the shape and familial shield-type grille give away MDX’s origins. But a slightly lower roofline, a 3-inch stretch between the front and rear wheels and a 2-inch gain in overall length make it appear larger than the tape measure suggests. The new MDX conveys a stronger sense of luxury, especially with its “Jewel Eye” headlights, which have become the signature styling item for the Acura brand. Although cargo volume has been reduced slightly, functionality is improved with added length behind the third-row seat. There’s also a flatter load floor when both rear rows are folded. Button clutter on the redesigned dashboard and control panel is reduced to nine from 41, as the rest are incorporated into a console-mounted dial and touch-screen display for the audio, communications and climate-control systems. The previous MDX featured a firmed-up ride and sporty steering, but customer feedback showed that’s not the priority. The 2014 model goes the other way, with a suppler ride and lighter steering. The MDX drives like an upscale wagon should, but it’s in no way bouncy or sloppy over rough surfaces. Acura claims the more aerodynamic body structure weighs 123 pounds less and, combined with other measures, contributes to a total 275-pound weight trimming. (For comparison, the Audi Q7 is heavier by nearly 1,000 pounds.) A 290-hp 3.5L V6 replaces the 300-hp 3.7 — smaller, yes, but no one will be the wiser, because the 3.5’s torque rating is within 3 pound-feet of the 3.7. It’s also more fuel efficient, with an estimated 18/27-mpg city/highway rating, bettering the previous 16/21 marks. That’s close to 30 percent better on the highway. Those numbers improve to 20/28 for the frontwheel-drive MDX — a first for the brand — and reduce the base all-wheel-drive’s starting price of $45,200 by a further $2,000. The two-grand premium for the improved all-wheel-drive system seems worth it, considering how well it aids bad-weather grip and works with the braking system to keep the MDX on its intended path in turns. ●

Lincoln MKC PREMIUM UTILITY

To catch a glimpse of Lincoln’s evolving style, check out the recently unveiled 2015 MKC crossover.

Competing with the BMW X1, Cadillac SRX, Audi Q5 and upcoming Mercedes GLA, this vehicle proves you don’t have to give up luxury for compact utility. It looks pretty good, too. The first thing you’ll notice is the MKC’s elegant style. Up front is a version of the 1940 Continental’s bow wake grille, which has become tradition among Lincolns. Chiseled body sides, elegant curves and the restrained use of chrome all highlight this upscale yet purposeful vehicle. An available all-glass panoramic Vista Roof lets the outside in. Lighted “welcome mats” appear next to the front doors when passengers approach at night. Like Lincoln’s MKZ, crafted interiors set the gold standard in the segment. Real wood and soft Bridge of Weir leather enhance the ambiance. The MKC debuts the new leather-wrapped Lincoln-exclusive steering wheel. Push-button shifting is easy to use. Owners will enjoy SYNC with MyLincoln Touch, voice-activated controls, a THX II Certified Audio system and all of the latest crash-avoidance technology. Knobs for volume and tuning make the audio system

more intuitive. Base models come with a 240-hp 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. Performance enthusiasts may want to opt for the 275-hp 2.3L EcoBoost fourcylinder upgrade. Active grille shutters maximize fuel economy, while Intelligent all-wheel drive and continuously controlled suspension damping — with three selectable driving modes — improve ride and handling. Standard wheels are 18 inches, but 19-inch rollers are available. Urban dwellers already appreciate Lincoln’s Active Park Assist, which automatically guides vehicles into tight parking spots. MKC introduces park-out assist, which ably backs vehicles out of slim spaces. “As a challenger luxury brand, entering this segment is a natural next step for us,” said Jim Farley, executive vice president of Lincoln. “MKC will do more than just compete — it will change the way people think about Lincoln.” While the MKC essentially is a Ford Escape dressed for success, it will become one of resurgent Lincoln’s core products. Whether the automaker’s transformation will succeed remains to be seen, but the MKC promises to be a winner. Prices start at $33,995 when it hits showrooms this summer. ●
