MARINE LEGISLATIVE ALERT February 23, 2012 Marines your help is needed to save the “new” Marine Foundation License Plate”!!

Background: SB 327 as originally submitted is not the issue; it was the Amendment that has caused us concern. The Indiana House Roads and Transportation Committee on Wednesday, February 22nd, put an amendment in a senate bill that would stop the sale of all 10 specialty license plates approved for sale for the first time this year, which includes the Marine Foundation, Indianapolis Zoo, along with plates from the NRA and the Tony Stewart Foundation. It also would end any plate that didn't sell at least 1,000 last year. In addition, any new plates would have to be approved by state lawmakers – not just the BMV. Russ Eaglin, Vice President of the Marine Foundation of Indiana, Inc. and Past Commandant Department of Indiana Marine Corps League, testified before the Indiana House Roads and Transportation Committee on Wednesday against the amendment. Unfortunately, the Committee voted 8-2 to adopt the Amendment. As this Legislative Alert goes out, an amendment to SB 327 is being drafted to include the “Marine Foundation” license plate in the Military specialty plate category which is excluded from this measure. The amendment will be offered from the floor at the 2nd Reading of the Bill.

Action Needed: Contact your respective State Senator and Representative to request support the “Marine Foundation” license plate as a Military specialty plate and exclude it from the SB 327 as Amended. DO IT TODAY!!

Sample Language: (use this or use your own words, but do it TODAY!!) Dear Senator (Representative) ____________________ Address Marines in Indiana have worked hard for 8 years to get a specialty plate and now that it has been approved, some of our Legislators want to take it back. We have no problem with tightening up the procedures to get a specialty plate, but do so with plates issued in the future. To take away the plate that has been on sale in 2012 would be punitive to our organization and our mission of providing support for Marines in Indiana. SB 327 as Amended passed by the House Roads and Transportation Committee on Wednesday, February 22nd, will stop the sale of all 10 specialty license plates approved for sale for the first time this year, which includes the Marine Foundation specialty plate. I urge you to support an Amendment at the 2nd Reading that will classify the Marine Foundation plate as a Military specialty plate which will exclude it from the measure.
