Other great profiles this month include – K92 Mininng and Abdul Latif Jameel amongst many more! One of our key focus’s this month is diversification and What Diversification is? Diversification occurs when a business develops a new product or expands into a new market. Often, businesses diversify to manage risk by minimizing potential harm to the business during economic downturns. The basic idea is to expand into a business activity that doesn't negatively react to the same economic downturns as your current business activity. If one of your business enterprises is taking a hit in the market, one of your other business enterprises will help offset the losses and keep the company viable. A business may also use diversification as a growth strategy.

Orsted Launches New Greener Gas Products

totalworld.industry industry.africa

Orsted has launched two new greener gas products designed for businesses looking to take an extra step towards decarbonising their energy. Since 2017, Ørsted has been supplying its customers with 100% renewable electricity and the supplier is now expanding its offering with the addition of biogas and carbon neutral gas options - designed to suit the differing requirements and budgets of UK businesses of all sizes. Orsted's biogas product comes with guaranteed certificates of origin, so businesses can report near-zero emissions from their gas consumption in greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting, making a significant contribution to carbon reduction. For those businesses seeking a lower budget option, Ørsted can also provide a carbon neutral gas product. The carbon from a customers’ gas consumption is offset through investment in sustainable development projects, such as clean energy, water 6 | total-world-industry.com

treatment and forest management projects. This helps to counteract any carbon emissions, provide social benefits to the surrounding communities and aid progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. All projects are certified via The Gold Standard or the Verified Carbon Standard, which is important for auditing. UK businesses can now make energy choices which have a positive environmental and societal impact, at a cost that is affordable. Energy is often one of the most significant contributors to a business’ carbon footprint and with UK businesses consuming around 240TWh of gas annually, Ørsted is keen to help organisations to be more ambitious in their sustainability objectives. Ashley Phillips, Managing Director at Ørsted Sales UK, said:

“Choosing to move to a biogas or carbon neutral gas supply will not only boost CSR credentials, but also open up opportunities to become an approved supply chain partner for sustainable businesses. “Consumer demand is at an alltime high, with 73% of UK consumers stating a preference for products and retailers that use renewable energy – as such, it can help to provide competitive advantage when it comes to sustainability credentials. “At Ørsted, our mission is to create a world that runs entirely on green energy. We’ve made enormous strides already, generating 3,721MW of offshore wind power each year and providing businesses with practical solutions that boost sustainability credentials. Now we can help them make greener gas choices too.

Shell Carbon-Capture Plant Hits 4 Million Ton Milestone Early Canadian project has seen better-than-expected reliability

Royal Dutch Shell Plc-operated carbon capture and storage project in Canada has hit a milestone of sequestering 4 million tons of carbon dioxide about six months ahead of schedule and at a lower cost than estimated, helped by better-thanexpected reliability. The Quest facility, which sequesters emissions from the Scotford Upgrader near Edmonton, Alberta, started up in November 2015 and has since run ahead of its target of capturing 1 million tons of carbon a year, said Anne Halladay, a geophysicist who has been an adviser on the project since it was in construction in 2014. That performance has been driven by less unplanned maintenance

than projected and more efficient performance, including less chemical usage, she said. While Shell's carbon storage project has been a success, Halladay sees more of a future for projects that use the sequestered carbon for industrial purposes such as fertilizer, pharmaceuticals and enhanced oil recovery. Halladay said large projects like Quest tend toneed large amounts of capital and more regulatory incentives to get built. The Quest facility cost about C$1.35 billion (US$1 billion) to build and received C$865 million from the Canadian and Alberta governments. ``I would love to be sitting here talking about the next 12 carbon capture and storage projects that

Alberta has been supporting and that are in the pipeline, but unfortunately, we're not seeing a lot of that,'' Halladay said in an interview. ``What we're looking at now is more carbon capture utilization and storage, which is really about creating a market where we can use the carbon dioxide.'' However, Halladay sees a future for carbon capture and storage as part of the ``all hands-on deck'' strategy that will be needed to reduce emissions and combat climate change. She also noted that there are still some large projects in the works, including one linked to the Chevron Corp.-led Gorgon liquefied natural gas plant in Australia, in which Shell is a partner. total-world-industry.com | 7

How Domino Printing is pushing the boundaries of Operational Excellence? Domino Printing keeps winning! Adding The Manufacturer MX Award 2018 for Operational Excellence to its plaudits, Domino was recognised for one of the foundations of its strong growth in the UK and world markets. In 2019 Domino opened a new 16,000 sqm plant making specialist inks for its range of printing technologies.

How do they keep up the momentum? Excellent people, processes and products. Simple as that. Chris Blake, group head of manufacturing excellence describes how they have replaced their effective manual T-Card issue tracking process with a new E-Card system. “E-Card works on our mobile phones, so absolutely anyone can scan a location code, raise an issue and allocate it straight away – then follow progress to see what’s happening. Potential problems, and just as important, improvement ideas are being addressed more quickly, before they affect production, and there’s a much greater feeling of teamwork.” Now all live work schedules are also available on mobiles. The initiative was developed in-house as Mark Lammin, manufacturing 8 | total-world-industry.com

engineering manager explains. “Gerald Wood had a special interest in data and created a portal for the manufacturing engineering team to monitor operational performance. When new production lines and test equipment came in, he was able to connect data acquisition to the portal, and the result is we have a very agile system linking product delivery with machine use in the hands of the people who run the factory.” Carl also singles out Arturas Borkertas, a member of the final test team. He started looking at how best to staff the three end-of-line test stations and came up with an optimal working pattern. Now he has been seconded into the manufacturing engineering team where his analytical skills and interest in electronics are a perfect fit. Improving that interaction of people with production continues to be a focus for Carl and manufacturing manager Belinda Pryor. “Flexibility has always been

a characteristic of Domino operations,” says Belinda “Now we have introduced more structure and automation of repetitive processes; this helps reduce variation and there are fewer delays and far fewer problems reported by customers.” The results are clear – on-time delivery of products to the customer specification is now up to 98%. Digital technologies, focused on areas where they can make the greatest difference to productivity, are strengthening not replacing Domino’s culture of empowered operational excellence. The well-established fourlevel management system is still a mainstay of continuous performance improvement. ‘Level 1’ issues are monitored and dealt with locally, with escalation where appropriate to functional teams who can change working instructions at Level 2 and, for crossbusiness issues to the functional heads at Level 3. Carl’s senior leadership team

monthly news roundup totalworld.industry

runs the monthly Level 4 review of key performance metrics combined with personal observation from their gemba walks. The performance data, filtered at the appropriate levels, is displayed on the factory floor for all to see and respond to. Machine-based decision-making is another area of technological innovation supporting Domino’s people to do their jobs better. As Carl points out, “We’ve gone from a lengthy process of calibrating ink jet printers at the end of production to configuring sub-assemblies that have been fully tested at the earliest stages. This is giving us better predictability of customer delivery dates and higher yields too.” Automation and better use of data are not taking away jobs, despite concerns heard in the industry as a whole, as Carl explains. “Our people are moving into service roles and continuous improvement roles where the knowledge and skills they have

developed with us can be put to even better use.”

Improvements won’t stop in the factory The next stage of Domino’s continuous improvement journey will focus on outbound logistics, allowing Domino to schedule, view and measure delivery performance to the end customer located around the world, and not just from the factory gate, using a new web portal integrated with real-time data from Domino’s production line. Domino continues to learn from best practice in other businesses, in this case the mighty Amazon. “And we are seeing many more customers in the factory,” says Carl. “They tend to be manufacturers themselves, and we are all learning from each other.” What tips does Carl have for other manufacturers? “Simple works best, with visibility of what’s going on so we can improve things in real time. It

is better to do 90% of the work well with simple systems than try to do everything too cleverly and fail. Make sure you do enough in all areas, connecting across people, processes and products. And make quality visible in all ways – we go out of our way to have great facilities, not just shiny floors and walls! Our KPI room is used for coffee-break discussions with the evidence of what’s going on all around. We take pride in who we are, with branded workwear, and we give and receive strong feedback.” With their talent for technological innovation and empowered people, I’ve no doubt Domino will continue to push the boundary of operational excellence. Strong growth is already on the books for 2019, across both UK sites. More prizes must surely be in sight for the Domino people who drive operational excellence in processes and the products so sought after by their customers. total-world-industry.com | 9

China refuses to sit back and take a beating.

There’s no question that President Xi sees these attacks on Huawei as a slap in the face.

Canadian citizens in China. So, what’s in store for American companies? For one, all U.S. Fortune 1000 C-level executives should think twice about traveling to China. Though I’m not a well-known businessperson, I still cringe in fear of detention as I wait for Chinese immigration officials to stamp my passport before leaving China. Look for Beijing to also deny visa extensions to and expel American expatriates living and working in China. Second, the Chinese love to practice what I term bureaucratic harassment. One of my clients, a Maine lobster fisherman, lost a $20,000 shipment, as Chinese customs “accidentally” left the highly priced cargo to sit outside on a sweltering July day in Shanghai. The fisherman lamented, “This is a first for me in over 10 years of working with the Chinese. I don’t know what to call it. An accident? Revenge for Trump?” The incident occurred the day after the U.S. raised tariffs on China. China will undoubtedly close a few thousand McDonald’s and Starbucks stores for “health-related” reasons. And they’ll find similar reasons—safety, expired business license, unpaid taxes—to stop the sales of shoes, smartphones, tractors and just about anything else made by a U.S. company in China. Imagine what this would do to the equity markets and the billions of dollars’ worth of market capitalization of America’s greatest companies. We are still a long way from a doomsday scenario with China, but let’s examine what one would look like. China mines and exports over half

the world’s supply of many rare earth elements, like germanium, magnesium, and phosphorus. What if China decided to stop supplying U.S. companies? China controls 80% of the world’s supply of tungsten. It’s used to produce electrical wires and added to steel to make it stronger. Hundreds, if not thousands, of supply chains would be affected if China decided to stop shipping the metal to U.S. manufacturers. Or consider our pharmaceutical industry, which is totally dependent upon China. The country supplies 40% of the active pharmaceutical ingredients in everyday medicines you and I take: antibiotics like penicillin, birth control pills, aspirin, vitamins A and C, and many cancer, diabetes, and bloodthinner drugs. They supply the big pharmaceutical drug makers like Teva Pharmaceutical, Johnson & Johnson, and Novartis. What would happen if … ? I don’t want to even fathom the idea. U.S. Secretary of State Wilbur Ross said in an interview in 2018 that China was “running out of bullets,” meaning that it could only tax $100 billion worth of U.S. imports vs. the over $500 billion the U.S. buys from China. I think it’s clear now how much power, influence, and interdependency China has on the US. China wields enough ammo to affect America’s supply chains, stock markets, and the daily lives of tens of millions of Americans who rely on prescription drugs. Let’s hope, as with the tariff war, that both countries will seek common ground in solving the Huawei problem. I’m confident cooler heads will prevail. total-world-industry.com | 11

American companies have been on pins and needles waiting for a truce to be declared on the Sino-US tariff war. However, they should be more concerned about Trump’s war against Huawei, as the White House announced on Monday that it has banned American high-tech suppliers from selling its semiconductor chips, Android operating systems, and test equipment to the world’s largest telecommunications equipment provider. On top of Monday’s announcement, Trump has also been strong-arming other countries not to use Huawei equipment, claiming the company creates backdoors in its 5G networking equipment that allow the Chinese government to spy on foreign governments and companies.  And to make matters worse, the U.S. Justice Department accuses Huawei’s CFO, Meng Wangzhou, who awaits extradition in Vancouver, of violating US sanctions on Iran.  So far, the Chinese government has been relatively quiet, probably not wanting to stir the pot while tariff discussions were still in progress. But this, I believe, is the calm before the storm.  China has never just sat back and taken a beating.   There’s no question that President Xi sees these attacks on Huawei as a slap in the face. The high-tech conglomerate is China’s darling and torchbearer for innovation, entrepreneurship, and all the goodwill that Chinese communism has to offer. China will retaliate hard and long. China believes in tit-for-tat. Trump raises tariffs, China raises tariffs. Canada arrests Meng, China arrests two

being headquartered in Canada and, officially, being a company that undertakes exploration, development and mining duties in the search for gold, silver and copper deposits, it’s the Papua New Guinea Kainantu mine that is the star of K92 Mining Inc’s portfolio. Incorporated in 2010, K92 is almost entirely focused on the development of the Kainantu gold mine, a 410 square kilometre site found up in the Eastern Highlands and showing signs of great promise in terms of high quality gold yield. Having already been mined between 2006 and 2009, the site has plenty of scope for further development and that’s where K92 comes in, having been formed especially for this task and more, “In addition to targeting a move towards production, K92 will focus on both expanding known areas of mineralisation and drilling high priority exploration targets.

totalworld.industry K92 Mining Inc

A site with plenty of history

Making great progress

The Kainantu gold mine is the cause of much industry excitement, but why? In short, it’s because there is a longstanding legacy of gold deposits in the area and this one site looks to be the hub of everything, “Gold was discovered in the area in 1928 in the Kainantu alluvial gold areas, however modern exploration did not commence until the early 1980’s. After the discovery of Irumafimpa, Highlands Pacific Limited (“HPL”) commenced mining operations on the deposit in 2005. Barrick (Kainantu) Limited (“Barrick”) purchased the tenement package from HPL in late 2007 and concentrated on increasing the resource and discovering economic porphyry Cu Au mineralisation. There has been a significant amount of exploration on the property by various owners.” You’d be forgiven for wondering what, if anything, is left for K92 to harvest, but previous explorations appear to have merely touched the tip of the iceberg.

At the time of going to press, K92 had already embarked on a campaign of gold production from the bountiful Kora gold deposit, a significant part of the wider Kainantu site. This is an exciting time for everybody involved, with Alex Davidson, a K92 mining advisor, summing up just what makes this project so enthralling, “I think the Kainantu project is one of the most prospective in Papua New Guinea. The strength of the structures and veins are most impressive and they contain significant high grade gold!” So there’s plenty of observable potential, but what about logistical support and necessary infrastructure? It’s no secret that these elements can add significant cost and difficulty to any endeavour, but having been mined previously, there is nothing to worry about, “The property is well supported by regional infrastructure and contains nearly all the necessary site infrastructure to recommence

mining operations. Elements of the infrastructure require upgrade or servicing and these have been identified during the transition of ownership from Barrick to K92 and will now be completed.” When you combine usable onsite infrastructure, proof of existing gold deposits and regional assessments that allude to there being a lot more to be discovered you have all the makings of a fantastically profitable project and K92 seems pertinently aware of this. As a result, the leadership team has been selected incredibly carefully, so as to maximise the potential of the site, without risking inefficiency or human error getting in the way.

Leading from the front K92 defines itself in terms of excellence and that includes the team of industry professionals that are leading operations. With tangible international mining experience in abundance, as well as production start ups and re-starts, mineral exploration and financing

elements, the collective résumés of the leadership team read like a who’s who of the mining world, especially as they are all headed up by Stuart Angus, in his combined role of Chairman and Director, “Mr. Angus is an independent business advisor to the mining industry. For the past 30 years, Mr. Angus has focused on structuring and financing significant international exploration, development and mining ventures. Mr. Angus is the former chairman

of the board of B.C. Sugar Refinery Ltd.; he was a director of First Quantum Minerals until June, 2005, a director of Canico Resources Corp. until its takeover by CVRD in 2005, and a director of Bema Gold until its takeover by Kinross Gold in 2007.” Staggeringly, 30 years of industry experience and knowledge is somewhat of a fledgling amount, compared with other members of the team who have racked up in excess of four decades at the top of the sector. As a combined force, however, this is

“The production results for the first quarter are significantly above budget…”

totalworld.industry K92 Mining Inc

a management team to be reckoned with, as it is comfortable making big decisions quickly and isn’t afraid to invest in initiatives that will support the project. If fortune really does favour the brave then its safe to assume that amazing results are on the horizon and the first quarter figures certainly seem to reflect this, “The production results for the first quarter are significantly above budget with an almost 20% increase in gold production in comparison to the best previous quarter. Importantly, tonnes processed during the quarter also increased by almost 10%, despite the process plant being shut down for over a week during March to allow for annual maintenance of all major components to be completed. If production records are already being broken, the future looks set to be incredibly prosperous and the team at K92 is more than ready to shoulder the responsibility of a large mining yield. Infrastructure is in place and being improved in light of the potential size of the deposit, management are in a position to be able to guide the exploration teams and the Kainantu site itself looks unlikely to disappoint. Combined, these elements make for a recipe for guaranteed success and in the mining world that means profitability to the core.

Building on a heritage that is as impressive as the products are delicious, Esther Price Candies values tradition, gentle expansion and staying true to the ethics and vision of the founder herself and the results are delicious.

Esher Price Candies totalworld.industry

back in 1926, Esther Price Candies has been bringing a little old fashioned charm to the confectionery industry for a little under 100 years, thanks to a loving respect for the woman herself. Having fine-tuned her craft, many of the recipes have remained unchanged to this day and moreover, a wealth of favourite products are still produced by hand, just how Esther made them. What inspired her to move onto the confectionery world though? “It all began when Esther Price first learned to make fudge in her 7th grade Home Economics class. She was so excited she ran home and asked her mother if she could make more. Esther then branched into making chocolates which she would take to her co-workers at a department store in downtown Dayton, Ohio. After starting her family in 1926, these same coworkers encouraged her to continue making candy for them to buy.” It almost reads like the plot of a Hollywood film, yet Esther’s combination of delicious homemade treats, homely charm and honest enthusiasm combined to make for some of the most irresistible

delicacies and a home-based enterprise that would span the next 30 years, before the inaugural shop was opened.

Branching out of home 1952 was the year that everything changed for Esther Price Candies. Opening a shop in Dayton, Ohio gave more people access to what would fast become not only a beloved local product, but eventually, a global giant in the confectionery world. It’s worth noting here that, in line with the respect for heritage that permeates every product line today, this first store has been kept and is the official headquarters for the whole operation. It would seem that you can send the chocolates out of Ohio, but you can’t take Ohio out of the globally recognised and respected company and why should you? If the local ingredients were good enough for Esther, they are certainly ideal for today’s discerning consumers too, “It was Esther’s belief that fresh dairy cream and butter make the difference in her recipes and she

insisted on using only the finest ingredients available in every candy piece she made. To this day, Esther Price Candies continues to use locally produced milk and butter, fancy grade almonds, pecans, and cashews that are unmistakable in every delicious bite.” By shunning the popular move of adding fillers, preservatives and other lesser ingredients, Esther ensured that anything with her name on it was the best it could possibly be, garnering the company a fantastic reputation and thrusting it into the commercial spotlight, which lead to a dramatic change in the 1970s.

A new era In 1976, it was time for a change and Esther sold her established company to four fellow entrepreneurs from Ohio, two of which would run the operation together faithfully until 2006. Paying reverence and homage to the standards set by Esther, the company went from strength to strength and when it came time for sole ownership, one of the partners,

Jim Day, leapt at the chance to make it a family operation once again. Taking sole control in 2006, Jim brought in a huge contingent of his family to help with the day-to-day running and they have remained in charge ever since, “The Day Family actively runs the operations and provides guidance as members of the Board of Directors. Many loyal employees, some hired by Esther, work alongside the Day family.” Having expanded to such a degree that there are now seven physical shops, as well as a serious online presence, anybody in the Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, Northern Kentucky or Indianapolis areas will be able to access the finest chocolate products in Ohio, thanks to significant wholesale contracts that have made Esther Price more than just a local legend, but also a household name.

Keeping it in the family Though the Day family are now at the helm, there is still a Price family connection alive and well within

the company. Don Otto, Esther’s grandson, is one of the 100-strong team and he is confident that Esther would appreciate how her brainchild has grown and yet, stayed true to her original vision, “It brings my family great joy to know Esther Price Candies honours my grandmother by continuing to make her original recipes to produce exceptional chocolates!” Honouring is exactly the right term, as the original branding has remained, in a glorious testament to how effective recognisable packaging can be, “Whatever your delight or reason to buy, you can be certain that the Esther Price gold box, tied with red ribbon, is your assurance that this is the candy against which all others are measured. Esther would be proud to know her chocolate legacy lives on, bringing happiness in each bite.” As a woman that was known for gleaning an exceptional amount of purpose and pleasure from making other people happy, Jim Day has sought to infuse the company with an intrinsic sense of optimism and, pardon the pun, sweetness, by proclaiming that, “Happiness is eating a piece of Esther Price candy.” Moving with the times You’ll be forgiven for wondering how a heritage confectionery company can seek to move forward and remain relevant in an age of food experimentation, but Esther Price Candies has managed, by looking at the needs and dietary complexities of its customers, “As part of the legacy Esther left behind, we continue to educate and inform our customers with effective communication online and throughout Esther Price stores. Our concern is for you and your family. That’s why we offer sugar-free products and clearly mark packages with an allergen statement.” With sugar-free offerings already available, perhaps it isn’t too much of a stretch to assume that other niche areas will also be looked at in the future, helping to guarantee Esther Price Candies another century of being in the hearts of Ohio’s discerning consumers. However the Day family seeks to maintain its firm grip on the industry, one thing is certain; Esther Price and her chocolates have long been an antidote to everyday blues and long may they continue to be a literal and metaphorical spoonful of sugar. 22 | total-world-industry.com

Today, Saudi Arabia is a thriving nation with a predominantly young population of nearly 29 million, connected demographics, abundant natural resources, a booming consumer market, and ideal fiscal conditions.” By keeping Saudi Arabia as the epicentre of all operations, ALJ has been able to remain focussed on its largest collection of consumers, while giving them the benefit of extensive local knowledge and pride, but that’s not to say that global expansion hasn’t occurred as well. With a tangible presence in over 30 countries worldwide, ALJ is more than just a home-grown operation but has remained true to the

spirit and ethos of its founder and namesake, as Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel, CEO, revealed, “The Arabian proverb – ‘If a wind blows, ride it!’ – was a favourite of my father, the founder of Abdul Latif Jameel. It sums up his pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit that lives on in our company today.”

More than just transportation While the initial offering of ALJ was transportation solutions only, over the years, a rapid programme of diversification has lead to the company embracing engineering, manufacturing, financial services, energy and environmental services, consumer products and even real estate opportunities, becoming a significant investor in emerging markets and any sector that shows promise. What’s even more impressive is that each and every industry being ventured into also brings with it a number of different focus points, demonstrating the adaptability, flexibility and expertise of the ALJ team as a whole.

26 | total-world-industry.com

Almost everything is connected to the automotive industry and has a natural flow that leads back to the first incarnation of the company. Transportation – Still the business that ALJ is best known for, customers can rely on the team for independent passenger car sales, commercial vehicle and equipment provision, logistical support and extra services that make a vehicle so much more personal. Essentially, every facet of vehicle sales in the MENAT region can be completed through ALJ, from initial purchase through to servicing, customisation, repairs and even tech support upgrades. Engineering and manufacturing – Connected to the transportation division is this exciting branch of operations, which creates aftermarket automotive accessories and parts. Sold under a number of in-house brands, these parts are a critical addition tat allow ALJ to offer a truly bespoke service to every transportation customer, “We’re more than just an

automotive parts producer and supplier – we’re a global solutionled provider that caters to aftermarket needs, from product development to manufacturing and distribution.” Financial services – Offering individuals and businesses an easy and hassle-free way to access necessary funding for vehicle solutions that would make a significant difference to private and commercial capabilities, the financial services arm of ALJ is a vital expansion. Offering fiscal support for the purchasing of vehicles, consumer products, equipment, real estate and even vehicle insurance, this is one of the most integrated offerings from the team that interconnects with every other department. In turn, this makes dealing with ALJ that much simpler. Real estate – As Saudi Arabia grows, thanks to innovative and inspiring companies such as ALJ making the commercial landscape evermore profitable, the need for

safe, comfortable and affordable housing increases as well. Having identified this trend in the MENAT region, ALJ has positioned itself perfectly to supply infrastructural support and assistance, “In 2012, we anticipated the needs of Saudi Arabia’s rising population and growing urbanisation by establishing Abdul Latif Jameel’s land and real estate development company. Today, our property portfolio consists of hundreds of buildings, including corporate offices, showrooms, workshops, training facilities and operational centres across the MENAT region, Europe and Eastern Asia. Within the next five years, we’re committed to growth and the development of a new class of high quality, contemporary and affordable middle-income housing.” Energy and environmental services – Closely connected to the real estate arm, this division has focussed on partnering with energy experts to create opportunities for reliable and sustainable energy solutions to be implemented throughout the region. One of the leading solar PV developers in the world, ALJ is making incredible progress in terms of contributing to a greener tomorrow, as well as a continually profitable one. Consumer products – Finally, having been witness to the expansion of the MENAT region, ALJ identified a sharp rise in the demand

“The beginning was humble, but the vision was great: to get the gears of the marine industries engaging more smoothly.”

28 | total-world-industry.com

for high-end consumer items and as such, sprung into action to offer customers an easy way to access everything they could possibly want and need, “We distribute and retail a wide and growing range of consumer electronics, home appliances and air-conditioning products. We represent renowned international brands including Toshiba, Sharp, Electrolux, White-Westinghouse, Alpine, Westinghouse, Bosch, and Dora, as a trusted long term business partner. In addition to distribution, we also showcase a comprehensive range of these products in our own high-tech retail showrooms, alongside premium technology products such as tablets and smartphones from powerful brands like Apple, and offer a complete customer service.”

Pushing ahead The question needs to be asked; is there anything that ALJ can’t do and isn’t involved in, within the MENAT region? The short answer is that the company appears to have a proverbial finger in every pie, but not to an uncompetitive or greedy extent. Rather, consumer need is what drives the consistent growth and diversification efforts at ALJ, “We are determined in our quest for new potential and we never lose sight of why this matters. we remain dedicated to regional development and mindful of the needs of our fellow citizens. Throughout our evolution, our core values have remained unchanged. They underpin who we are as a business and serve as a compass for our actions.” Always working alongside the values of respect, improve, pioneer and empower, ALJ has one mission as it moves into the future: to continue identifying and building on new investment opportunities that will bring extra value and quality of life to the people of the MENAT region. Considering that the company was initially founded as a transportation operation alone, this Cinderella story is incredibly impressive, but having taken the time to grow at a sustainable rate and in line with what the people need, as opposed to bottom lines and profit margins, ALJ has taken the long road to success and has barely had a puncture to deal with. If that’s not inspiring, nothing is.

Driving success forward Victoria South

totalworld.industry

Seemingly on a mission to become an indispensable partner to the automotive industry, the UMO Industrial Group has taken advantage of its many years in the field to diversify to an impressive and unrivalled extent.

UMO Industrial Group totalworld.industry

UMO Industrial Group comprises of a number of separate companies, all under one successful umbrella but the first to be launched was the namesake UMO, back in 1968, in Medellin, Colombia. Initiated in response to the identification of a significant gap in the market for a manufacturer of high quality exhaust systems for OEM automotive operations and spare part supply within both Colombia and Ecuador. Impressively, large names were quick to jump on board, with Honda taking motorcycle silencers and Chrysler receiving full exhaust systems from 1969 onwards. From here, things moved quickly. 1970 saw SOFASA (Renault) join the ranks as a client, with General Motors following suit in 1980, but product development was not being side-lined during this period. In 1975, for example, UMO’s oval silencers were designed, developed and put into production, ready to meet the needs of an ever-growing customer base. This approach, naturally, lead to an embracing of new technologies as and when they became available, bringing UMO into the modern era.

The

The age of automation With demand increasing, UMO recognised that it needed to stay ahead

of the curve in terms of manufacturing processes and in 1996, an automated welding robot became the latest in a string of significant investments into streamlining production. It also freed up significant pockets of time, during which important tasks such as gaining ISO certification could be focussed on. Branching out into stainless steel exhaust systems, gaining more ISO certifications and investing in 3D metrology technology took UMO into the 2000s, where recognition and evolution were waiting, 32 | total-world-industry.com

“UMO was named the ‘Best Development Supplier’ of SOFASA – RENAULT and nominated as the best supplier in the metallic category by GM Colmotores in 2004, the same year we obtained environmental certification ISO14001: 2004.” It would be 2006 that saw things start to get really exciting, however. Having committed to the purchase of new CNC machinery and automated welding robots, UMO Industrial Group also welcomed a new branch to the operation in the form of FORMAPRESS.

Founded to offer die-cutting, stamping and die design services to the whole automotive industry, this arm was designed to streamline the outsourcing process, with big name manufacturers being able to use the company for more than just exhaust system purchases. It also set a precedent for the acquisition of other useful operations.

Gaining impressive ground By 2008, word had spread as to the industry monopoly being enjoyed by the UMO Industrial Group, thanks in

no small part to the numerous awards it was being bestowed with, “In 2008, we were one of four OEM suppliers to achieve the green level in the global certification of RENAULT-NISSAN ASES suppliers. We were also awarded for our efficiency in the implementation of the MGC (Competitiveness Management Model) programme and UMO is one of the best suppliers in the KAIZEN convention of GM and RENAULT suppliers.” Following the successful integration of FORMAPRESS into the

Industrial Group family, 2009 saw the acquisition of another new addition, this time in the guise of SEKI, an already established and respected key player in the polyurethane sector that was producing saddles, linings and foams all pertinent to the automotive industry. This is clearly a move towards a totally integrated business model, offering clients access to easy, reliable and high quality services, regardless of how diverse, all from one supplier. No wonder so many industry recognitions have followed

the purchase of SEKI, “In 2010, UMO was awarded the ‘Supplier with the best quality 2009’ prize awarded by SOFASA – RENAULT and in 2012, the ‘General Motors supplier quality excellence award 2012’ award, granted by General Motors Company for excellence in quality.” These are just two of many similar awards, bestowed for quality and excellence. In fact, year-on-year, UMO Industrial Group appears to add more gongs to its impressive collection, thanks to an unerring dedication to total-world-industry.com | 33

never letting standards slip and always trying to identify what clients might need, before they themselves are aware of it.

Serving many sectors With a diversified portfolio of services and interest areas, you might assume that the UMO Industrial Group has marked its cards as something of a jack of all trades and while that’s true, it’s worth noting that it is also a master of them all. From car and motorcycle exhaust systems, including high performance custom products, through to saddle design and innovation, the group is certainly pressing ahead and looking for new and exciting ways to appeal to clients, while also utilising the wealth of cutting edge equipment that has been invested in. There’s also a sense of consumers being educated as to the importance of what the UMO Industrial Group produces, especially in terms of high quality exhaust systems, “Most users do not worry about periodically checking the status of their vehicle's exhaust system.

This important component usually remains in the background in the usual maintenance operations. However, the role it plays in the process of expulsion of the gases resulting from combustion is essential for the proper functioning of the engine and the normal running of the vehicle.” In short, if you want your car or motorcycle to run at optimum efficiency, safety and environmentally aware levels, you need to ensure that it is fitted with an exhaust system that has been made by the UMO Industrial Group. The same goes for everything else being produced in the Medellin headquarters and knowing that the company enjoys branching out into new areas, there’s basically no limit as to what we can expect it to move into in the future. Having the confidence and patronage of large OEMs such as General Motors, Honda, Chrysler and Renault speaks volumes as to the expertise of the UMO Industrial Group and all but guarantees that it will continue driving success forward for many years to come.

“…if you want your car or motorcycle to run at optimum efficiency, safety and environmentally aware levels, you need to ensure that it is fitted with an exhaust system that has been made by the UMO Industrial Group.”

A driving force Victoria South

Commercial success and corporate responsibility go hand in hand for SISAMEX, a company that seeks to raise the bar in terms of quality automotive parts, while also supporting local communities and taking a ‘people first’ approach to global business.

that serve a worldwide contingent of customers yet still maintain a localised focus are rare but SISAMEX is one that redefines what it means to enjoy extensive success without treading on those that have helped the company to get to where it is. By combining the two focus areas of people and products, SISAMEX has garnered itself a phenomenal reputation in the world of automotive parts and manufacturing, but CEO Manuel Valdes has acknowledged that there is to be no resting on proverbial laurels, as there is still work to be done, “I've proudly witnessed SISAMEX's development during the last 25 years from a midsized company into a large, leading enterprise. I'm most proud of contributing to this evolution and building SISAMEX's prestige. However, I admit there's still room for development…”

Companies

Covering good ground The question needs to be asked; what

does SISAMEX actually produce and for which sector? It’s not a luxury car parts manufacturer, that’s for sure, as agricultural vehicles, trucks and tractors are the specialist focus here and that requires a whole extra level of product excellence, reliability and quality. This is amplified even further when you realise that more than 80 percent of products being supplied are fitted to vehicles that are destined for export. Starting initially as a supplier of automotive parts for local clients only, the axles, assemblies and brakes that are being crafted are now available for global distribution, thanks to an identified need for logistical diversification, “We have diversified our product line and clientele. We try to export our products to different places worldwide. Our products are already being exported to North America and Germany. We keep searching for markets where our clients could benefit from our components and systems…” Naturally, no two clients are ever the same and therefore, neither are

their requirements. In a bid to satisfy existing customers and tempt new ones into the fold, SISAMEX has been careful to stay at the cutting edge of manufacturing developments and innovations that will allow for easy customisation of parts, as well as bespoke design and build projects. The result is a large roster of incredibly satisfied clients that keep coming back to SISAMEX for the guaranteed support and quality services that are always on offer.

Quality as more than just a buzzword The dedication to quality runs deep at SISAMEX, with every team member being expected to subscribe to the same overarching and exacting standards that have defined the company since its inception. With industry best practices acting as guiding principles and an internal zero defects programme in place, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that SISAMEX has been the proud recipient of a number of prestigious awards and accolades including, but not limited to, a Master of Quality Award. management has also been completed, offering a recognised qualification that will reassure clients of SISAMEX’s commitment to upholding industry standards. Taking things to a whole extra level, SISAMEX demands the highest quality from its suppliers as well as itself. This makes perfect sense, as exemplar products can’t be crafted from subpar materials. Stringent quality control policies and procedures are in place, with goods and materials being thoroughly inspected before use and, if necessary, rejected. In order to motivate suppliers to maintain a certain level of quality, SISAMEX gives out a Supplier’s Excellence award to those strategic partners that had the fewest rejections, timeliest deliveries and provided the best overall service.

Putting people first Having firmly established that SISAMEX is focussed on quality and the manufacturing of industryleading automotive parts, it’s time to look at the other defining characteristic of this innovative

operation; the human element. As you’d expect, staff are considered as a key asset, with the team being given full credit for upholding the standards that SISAMEX has become renowned for. By encouraging every individual to invest themselves fully into their task, by taking personal responsibility for the delivery of exemplar work, the management is able to guarantee that everyone is working to the same standards and producing consistently admirable end results. Team members that show promise are given opportunities to progress and developing in-house talent is something of a point of pride for SISAMEX, but it’s not just employees that feel the benefit of a benevolent management structure. Proud to be a socially responsible operation in Mexico, SISAMEX actively seeks out opportunities to increase its environmental stewardship and community connections, resulting in philanthropic recognition from CEMEFI and certification by the

Federal Bureau for Environmental Protection. Community outreach and green operating policies are more than gimmicks here; they are vital elements of a company that is deeply committed to improving lives as well as industry standards. The result is a number of outreach programmes, covering everything from natural disaster aid through to family support, environmental programmes that promote green initiatives and even health and fitness drives that seek to give access to informational seminars on pertinent topics, such as breast cancer awareness. Education is given priority status as well, with a number of students having been fully sponsored as they venture into further education. SISAMEX takes the view that supporting local communities is something of a win-win situation. Offering a vast range of construction expertise that covers everything from the ground up, Flintstones is everybody’s “best friend in construction” for good reason and the team always has capacity for making new acquaintances.

Flintstones totalworld.industry

the namesake cartoon might be focussed on hijinks and laughable examples of ineptitude, this could not be further from the business model enjoyed by Flintstones Design & Build (Flintstones). You won’t find proprietary boulder houses with simplistic layouts in the portfolio here, so now that the moniker coincidence has been addressed, let’s get down to brass tacks and discuss what makes this such a formidable company.

While

Praise where it’s due Flintstones is a company of master craftsmen and seek to amplify this fact through the completion of beautiful projects, hiring only the very best professionals and forging not only construction perfection, but also rock-solid relationships with clients, “With every project; our goal is to always be “your best friend in construction.” Why is this so important? Because who do you trust more than your friends? Who understands your needs better than a friend? By taking this approach, Flintstones is able to offer a far more tailored, custom and indepth design and build experience that is guaranteed to impress and satisfy. That’s why you’ll find no false modesty within the structure of the company; this is an operation that knows how good it is because it has always strived to be the best and that’s something that the local community has come to appreciate.

A local connection World domination is all very well and good but business excellence starts at home, which in the case of Flintstones, is Victoria, British Columbia, “Flintstones is a business with deep roots in the Victoria community. It’s important to know that we share your values: an unwavering devotion to quality workmanship, honouring commitments, and always acting with fairness and integrity.” This community spirit has been in place ever since the inception of the company, which can be traced back to 1969 when an innovative bricklayer called Eric Lappnau emigrated to Vancouver from Denmark. Quickly establishing his position as a master craftsman that had a keen eye and unique talent for restoring period homes to exemplar standards, he was in demand and soon built a customer base that was enviable, to say the least. total-world-industry.com | 43

Flintstones totalworld.industry

This, in turn, lead to the formation of something more, “In the mid-1990s, Lappnau recognised the entrepreneurial potential in 16-year-old Michael de Palma and took him under his wing. Mike quickly adopted Lappnau’s devotion to his customers. In 2007, when Lappnau retired, Michael enthusiastically took over the company and the company was renamed as Flintstones.” From solid foundations, a new incarnation of a beloved operation sprung up and under Mike’s watchful eye, new specialties were added to the roster of services available, including interior and exterior residential renovations, new building design and construction and the creation of exciting outdoor living spaces.

A mission to live by Remaining exceptional is the name of the game at Flintstones and as such, interpersonal relationships are given the attention that they deserve, “At Flintstones, our mission is to provide the best construction experience to our customers through high-quality construction, the finest materials, met timelines and a commitment to superior customer service. We maintain a commitment to our customers, ourselves and the communities in which we work to always act with fairness, integrity, and respect; placing the needs of people first.” Working on a foundation of trust, Flintstones makes it clear that regardless of the size or complexity of a project, they are all given the same attention in order to attain one goal: a legacy that will stand for generations to come. From restoring a period home to cladding something a whole lot newer, the end result is always the same: a project with no cut corners, no quick fixes and no mistakes, “Nothing less than extraordinary. We don’t settle for it. Neither should you.”

Spoilt for choice As complete renovation specialists, Flintstones is ready and keen to take on any number of different contracts. Essentially, if you need it doing, the team will have most likely already seen it, done it and even changed the way the industry normally tackles it, thanks to a natural ability to take on tasks of any size. What never changes, regardless of budget or project parameters, is that the client is always the main focus and their experience needs to be the best it can be. While some construction companies might be more comfortable specialising

in just one or two areas, Flintstones has organically grown over the years to encompass an impressive range of offerings from design through to project planning, renovations, foundations, waterproofing, masonry and specialist outdoor living spaces. This vast range of services is exactly why Flintstones has become such a respected household name in Canada, as everybody can find a reason to welcome the team onto site. From owners of luxury dwellings that want to take advantage of their view with an outdoor terrace, to domestic clients that simply need some masonry repairs and everyone is subjected to the same meticulous standards and open communication, “Our ability to, “Do it once. Do it right”, comes from our rigorous process. Our decades of construction experience have taught us the importance of due diligence. We examine each project from every angle, from permits and inspections to accurate scheduling and budgeting, so there are never any unexpected surprises. Over 90% of the worlds cargo trade is through shipping lanes and with the new IMO regulation, Optimarin stands above the competition with its technology and commitment to environmental safety.

trade has very rarely diverged in terms of trading over the oceans. Since the ancient Phoenicians and their trade empire over the Mediterranean seas, sea lanes and travel over the expansive salt water remains amongst the most valued method of delivering valuables. The valued pepper corns and silk from India relied extensively on the trade from ports near the Mediterranean Basin and without maritime influence, such commodities would become much rarer to near unattainable. In the modern world, shipping lanes is still the dominant de-facto method of trading and carriage for world trade. From the International Chamber of Shipping themselves, several facts are presented as ‘The international shipping industry is responsible for the carriage of around 90% of world trade.’ This volume of trade carried out by shipping means without the values of ships and shipping lanes ‘intercontinental trade, the bulk transport of raw

International

materials, and the import/export of affordable food and manufactured goods would simply not be possible.’ With modern innovations to technologies that create better efficiencies thereby forging marked improvements in trade, ‘Seaborne trade continues to expand, bringing benefits for consumers across the world through competitive freight costs. Thanks to the growing efficiency of shipping as a mode of transport and increased economic liberalisation, the prospects for the industry's further growth continue to be strong.’ as ICS comments. Despite the innovations with aerodynamic technology, sea travel by trade would still be much more prevalent than flight as ‘There are over 50,000 merchant ships trading internationally, transporting every kind of cargo. The world fleet is registered in over 150 nations and manned by over a million seafarers of virtually every nationality ‘ Modern ships to carry the volume of cargo required use a plethora of technologies all equated to balance and displacement of

water. Using theories and practice of water displacement, ships have ballast tanks to withdraw or release ballast water. Readers may know the importance of ballast water but for those who do not know its significance, it is water carried to improve stability, balance and trim. In rough waters, ballast water is loaded or unloaded depending on the weather to create extra stability. This technology is useful in areas with rough waters. However, there are draw backs to this method. Environmentally, withdrawing ballast water means potentially withdrawing species from an environment and when expelling water, would expel the same species in another region of the world. These invasive species compete and may even exterminate native species in the environment which raises many concerns. A case study would be the Great Lakes in USA. Zebra Mussels native to the Caspian and Black Sea were introduced to Lake St Clair and within 10 years, spread to the neighbouring Great Lakes region which cost the US approximately $5 billion US dollars. IMO (International Maritime Organisation) has noted that ‘The spread of invasive species is now recognized as one of the greatest threats to the ecological and the economic well-being of the planet. These species are causing enormous damage to biodiversity and the valuable natural riches of the earth upon which we depend. Direct and indirect health effects are becoming increasingly serious and the damage to the environment is often irreversible.’ These concerns resulted in the IMO creating regulations and guidelines of utilising Ballast Water. In many cases this involves only selected conditions within areas could Ballast water be withdrawn. However, technological treatment of Ballast water is also a standard. As such, Optimarin has been well trusted in developing and installing water ballast treatment systems in compliance for helping the world. Few companies in the world start off with the idea of environmental protection. Optimarin is one of those few companies that did. ‘Optimarin AS was founded in 1994 in Stavanger, Norway and we were one of the first companies in the world to develop a system for environmentally friendly purification of ballast water.’ Such is their dedication to environmental total-world-industry.com | 49

protection that ‘We chose to pursue a solution that does not use any chemicals and leaves no residual products that are harmful to the ocean or the environment. In 2000, we were honoured by installing the world’s first ballast water treatment system on board the cruise ship Regal Princess.’ These early installations and development did not stop there. Optimarin motto is ‘The trusted name in water ballast treatment’ is a testament to their confidence in their brand and equipment. As such Optimarin receives international recognition ‘After several years of testing, developing and patenting new technology,’ Optimarin says ‘we finally obtained type approval for the Optimarin Ballast System in 2009, in accordance with Guideline 8 and the ‘International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004’. The Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) uses approved technology that significantly exceeds the stringent requirements set out in the IMO Convention. In 2016, Optimarin

‘Optimarin AS was founded in 1994 in Stavanger, Norway and we were one of the first companies in the world to develop a system for environmentally friendly purification of ballast water.

was the first company to receive approval by the US Coast Guard under their significantly more stringent requirement’. Such is Optimarin equipment and their advanced foresight that their technology exceeds and is approved under tough international standards of other nations. The success of Optimarin is evidently seen in their sales with a confident record of purchases coming steadily. From the CEO Tore Andersen, ‘2019 is already shaping up to set a new standard, with the orderbook currently five times the size it was at this point in 2018. Revenues, he says, are expected to double year-on-year.’. 2018 saw a massive quantity of sales with over 100 units sold but with five times the order of sale, 500 units and more is expected to be sold in 2019. What makes them this effective? Tore Andersen explains it best “This is an overnight success that’s been 25 years in the making. I’ve been asked how have we managed to suddenly boost sales in this way. But that ‘sudden’ surge is the result of many years of

dedication, investment and total focus on BWT. We have patiently developed the market’s most reliable, simple and effective UV technology – a technology that is tried and tested like no other, with no major overhauls or iterations in the last ten years. That means we, and our customers, have complete trust in it, knowing the system inside out. It is easy to use, easy to operate and easy to rely on. Now that the industry is mandated to install BWT systems we see that it’s becoming the easy choice.” This shows a hand that dedicated perseverance and quality is rewarded which Optimarin is at the forefront. In its hand, ethical concern for the environment is now implemented for the world and Optimarin has established itself as the forefront of the leading designs. With recent ventures such as the Royal Caribbean International requesting retroactive fitting on their ships and optimum sales in the future, Optimarin motto ‘The trusted name in water ballast treatment’ is very well deserved.
