CONSERVATORY ROOFS*

Make sure your conservatory is warm this winter with T&K With winter well and truly here, you’re more than likely going to be closing the door to your conservatory and keeping it shut until the spring. After all, its polycarbonate roof offers such poor thermal efficiency that it’s just too cold to spend any time in. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Replacing a polycarbonate roof with a solid replacement will ensure your conservatory is warm in the winter thanks to impressive levels of thermal efficiency. Not only will this transform your conservatory into a usable space all year round, it will give you more room to use – you could turn it into a dining room, study or even a ground floor bedroom. At T&K Home Improvements we install solid tiled roofs, glass roofs and lantern roofs. Make sure you’re not neglecting your conservatory this winter by replacing its roof today.

The Little Black dress or the LBD as it is known has always been a staple for our wardrobes because of the long-lasting, versatile, affordable and accessible item it is. Fashion historians have said the item dates back to the 1920s and was favoured in design by the famous Coco Chanel. Demure and daring, the LBD conjures up a host of images for any occasion and has always symbolised simple elegance.

INSIDE BUSINESS / THE FURNITURE QUARTER

Over in Northampton, The Furniture Quarter also has a loyal following of happy customers but it’s one of those shops you’ve probably walked past and always wanted to venture inside. And there is plenty to catch the eye.

Both sites provide a relaxed atmosphere in which to browse and buy, if you wish.

There are sofas, chairs and furniture as well as giftware and accessories. But this isn’t your standard retail shop. It has a quirky personality with many bespoke items.

And behind the scenes, Richard is nurturing a growing team of apprentices in all areas of the business. Having been an apprentice himself he realises the importance in supporting young people to make a start in their chosen careers and move them through the ranks.

If you want something different this is the place to come.

Following on from the enormously successful launch of Indulgence Magazine in 2018 and becoming the number 1 local lifestyle publication in the Northamptonshire / Buckinghamshire regions, we were delighted to launch ‘A Small Indulgence’ back in the summer of 2019. A Small Indulgence is an online shopping experience that provides our readers with an elegant range of gift ideas and beautifully affordable homewares.

From awardwinning environmental practices which look to create a greener future for the next generation, to state of the art ICT equipment and toys, each child from six weeks to nearly five years has the chance to thrive. Having recently won a prestigious ‘Princess Anne Training Award’ for their bespoke ‘Teach to Reach’ training programme, the highly skilled team recognise the importance of initiatives such as weekly music classes and yearround outdoor play, and the positive impact this has on children’s learning and development.

play provides opportunities for large scale imaginative and multisensory play and exercise, which not only underpins our messages about healthy lifestyles and respect for the environment, but helps develop children’s problem-solving ability and social skills”, said Nursery Manager, Tracy Smith, who has 35 years’ experience in the Early Years sector. This respect for the environment is demonstrated throughout the setting, as Nene Valley currently hold a ‘Silver’ accreditation in the international ‘Eco-Schools’ scheme for exceptional environmental awareness. Fearless Individuality As we prepare our children for employment in the twenty-first century, it is all too easy to be alarmed by headlines: ‘110% of future jobs haven’t yet been invented.’ ‘Artificial intelligence will take over the universe.’

The above examples are contrived and exaggerated, of course, but we will all have read similar. The fact is that nobody can really know the future situation, and this has always been the case. What is clear, however, is that our children of today will need to be open to a portfolio approach to their working lives and open to lifelong learning, too. Headlines such as those above can be unhelpful and limiting at a time when young people need to be more openminded, creative and flexible than they have ever been. They need to have a sound knowledge of themselves and their abilities and possess the ability to work collaboratively with others, and this is why we place great emphasis on ‘Fearless Individuality’ at Northampton High School. To be fearless in our school context may be overt as girls make choices at

Forest School, have their first sleepover on a residential, scale a climbing wall on an Outward Bound course or push themselves to the limits on a Duke of Edinburgh or World Challenge expedition. But less obvious are the challenges overcome in the classroom and common spaces – the educational and personal fearlessness through which the girls have learnt to become less risk-averse, to avoid perfectionism in all areas of life and to understand that to fall and then to pick oneself up is often the best way to learn. Being an individual – especially in one’s teenage years – can take real courage, but we pride ourselves in knowing and valuing each of our girls and they are encouraged to take risks, to trust in and develop their own skills and character and to avail themselves of the myriad opportunities on offer. These include

extracurricular offerings, with sessions as diverse as Debating Club, Ukelele Group, Language Leaders, FemSock, Cafe Sci, Yoga and the Sewing Bee, and volunteering opportunities, including the Big Bear Little Bear and Big Sister Little Sister mentoring schemes. Great emphasis is placed on personal and intellectual growth in the classroom, too, and on sport and the creative subjects. Throughout their time at the High School girls are encouraged and supported in their personal growth through an excellent pastoral network. Initiatives such as the Confidence and Challenge (COaCH) programme in Key Stage 3 serve to further the girls’ participation, sense of adventure and ability to give to others, and the Girls on Board programme empowers them to solve relationship problems and to develop their emotional intelligence.

Indulgence Matters! with Angela Cox

With a new decade fast approaching why not make a commitment to yourself now to move towards an even better version of you. Here are my top tips for being positive, happy and flourishing.

flourish 8 ways to

in 2020

NORTHANTS / BUCKS | DEC / JAN 2020

1. Wake up and choose happy

2. Make the most of Monday

Make a deliberate choice to feel happy every single morning. Happiness is a state of mind and it’s something you can decide to be. When you wake up whisper ‘I am really happy today’ to yourself and reinforce it throughout the day by telling everyone you meet that you feel fabulous.

Blue Monday needn’t be a thing. Happiness Expert, Doctor Andy Cope reminds us that we spend a 7th of our life living on Mondays so don’t they deserve a bit more love? Stop dreading them and instead make the absolute most of them. When life gives you a Monday, dip it in glitter, get out there and sparkle.

46

Indulgence

3. Give Generously

6. Make an appointment with You

Giving makes us feel great so make it a mission to give to others. You might offer your time to babysit for a single parent or mow the lawn of an elderly neighbour. You could drop food at a local foodbank or buy a coffee for a homeless person. Whatever you choose, do what you can and do it often to give you a boost of feel-good emotions.

Allow yourself some ‘me time’ to spend in a coffee shop, reading a book, walking or simply ‘being’. Block out the time in your schedule and make it a recurring appointment. Make the time non-negotiable. This simple act of self-care will see your self-respect soar as it reinforces how much you value your time and how much you deserve to be your top priority.

4. Be Grateful

7. Focus on what you want

You might not have millions of pounds, a fancy house or a flash car, but whatever you have, be grateful. Actively practicing gratitude, even when you have very little is scientifically proven to reduce toxic emotions of envy, resentment and greed. Research by Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher concludes that being grateful increases happiness and reduces depression so what have you got to lose? Write down three things you are grateful for every night before going to bed.

If you want to achieve something, visualise it happening. Often, we place all of our attention on the things we don’t want and the unconscious mind translates this as our desired outcome and so delivers it. If you want to lose weight, imagine yourself as a slim person rather than focussing on the fact that you are fatter than you want to be.

5. Reframe Thoughts

8. Celebrate everything you achieve

When your inner critic strikes it can be difficult to stay focussed. This voice inside your head does not have your best interests at heart. Once you know this you can choose to ignore it and to dilute its toxicity, reframe the negative thoughts by thinking of the direct opposite and saying this out loud. If the inner critic tells you that you are fat and lazy, reframe it and repeat ‘I look and feel great and I am full of energy.’

No matter how small or insignificant your achievements seem, give yourself a pat on the back. Don’t let anything you do slip through the net. You deserve the accolades and there is no greater recognition than that given to yourself.

December

his festive season why not try adding a few curve balls into your mealtimes? Alongside the turkey, sprouts and clementines which Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without, pick up some of the vegetables we can all be guilty of walking straight past and treat your taste buds to a Christmas they’ll never forget...

Celeriac is a classic example of where you should always listen to your mother and never judge a book by its cover. Look past its weird knobbly appearance to the wonderful slightly nutty flesh which lies beneath. Plus it’s low in calories and an excellent source of soluble fibre, vitamins and minerals. Try mashing it with just a little wholegrain mustard and olive oil, so as not to detract from its delicious natural flavour and add a quick squeeze of lemon juice just before serving. It makes a really tasty accompaniment to beef or lamb.

For those of you who haven’t heard of it Salsify isn’t, as you might expect, the latest dance craze at your local gym. It is however another of our, shall we say, less aesthetically pleasing vegetables but forgive its long, thin, bumpy exterior to find a creamy white flesh that’s as versatile as any of its root vegetable relatives. Add it to soups or stews for a touch of sweetness or keep it simple by throwing them in a roasting pan with a drizzle of your favourite oil and some unpeeled crushed garlic cloves.

Often overlooked in favour of its savoy or red cousins, White Cabbage makes a delicious and versatile addition to any cook’s pantry. Plus boasting as it does the fewest calories and least fat of any vegetable alongside a whole lot of vitamin C, a second helping is practically a must. Homemade coleslaw is a really easy and tasty way to wow guests over Christmas, much nicer than shop-bought and a super addition to any buffet where it will go particularly well with cold meats. The sturdy slightly peppery tasting leaves make great parcels, stuff with your favourite mince or leftover turkey.

new year shouldn’t have to mean a new crash diet, the cold winter months are tough enough so why deny yourself a little bit of what you fancy? Enjoy the sweetness on offer from our January crops and simply opt for everything in moderation, including moderation

January heralds the arrival of forced Rhubarb, the more tender and delicately flavoured of the two yearly crops. The leaves are poisonous and the stalks too sour to be eaten raw but once stewed, poached or roasted with a fair amount of sugar this red vegetable will tart up any meal. A sweet and decadent crumble topping offsets beautifully the flavour of the rhubarb, try adding some ground almonds in place of some of the flour and then topping with chopped almonds for a fresh taste and texture combination.

Beetroot brings back memories for a lot of people of it in its slimiest, most vinegary form but forget the 70s throwbacks and embrace the beets for what they really are: delicious, earthy and of the super-food variety. These purple beauties are packed full of health-boosting vitamins and minerals and as they’re known to improve stamina are perfect fodder for sluggish Januarys. They’re great boiled or roasted but have you ever tried them in a cake? Similarly to carrots, beets will keep a cake both sweet and beautifully moist so don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

If you catch yourself grumbling about the unforgiving weather this January, spare a thought for the humble leek. A hardy little fella, and relative of garlic and onion, leeks are tough enough to survive the harshest of winters and offer a good few months’ worth of harvesting. Their delicately sweet but distinctive flavour when cooked makes a great addition to winter broths, soups and stews but for the ultimate of winter warmers try them smothered in thick cheese sauce as a side dish to your favourite roast, it’s a classic for very good reason.

RECIPES & TRADITIONS from the real DOWNTON ABBEY Highclere Castle, known as 'the real Downton Abbey', bustles with activity at the best of times, but it is never more alive than at Christmas. Christmas at Highclere is a look behind the scenes at the yearly rituals that make Highclere the most magical place to be throughout the festive season, and shares secrets of how you too can bring a quintessentially British festive spirit to your home. Lady Carnarvon will guide you through Advent, Christmas preparations and Christmas Eve all the way through to the day itself, and beyond through Boxing Day and into the New Year. Discover how the manor and grounds are transformed into a Yule Tide Wonderland, including the raising of a twenty-foot tree in the saloon, the gathering of holly and mistletoe from the grounds for homemade decorations and delicious and decadent recipes both new and old from the Highclere Kitchens, some pulled from the Highclere Archives that are over one hundred years old. Indulgence has teamed up with our friends at Preface to bring you several recipes from the book and having visited Highclere several times, I can honestly say that the next few pages will fill you with all things festive. HIGHCLERE HAM

PREPARATION TIME: 10 MINS. COOKING TIME: 9 HRS, PLUS RESTING. SERVES 20+ PORTIONS

Deep roasted ham is a perfect accompaniment to your Boxing Day table. INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 large onion, quartered

Preheat the oven to 240°C/475°F/Gas mark 8.

1 carrot, chopped 3 bay leaves Sprigs of parsley and thyme

Spread all the vegetables and herbs in a large roasting tin to make a trivet and place the ham on top. Pour over the cider and wrap the whole pan in a double layer of tin foil.

6kg (13lb) unsmoked ham 1½ litres (2½ pints) cider 3 tbsp golden syrup 1 tbsp mustard powder Handful of cloves

Put the roasting tin into the oven for 20 minutes, then turn the heat down to 120°C/240°F/Gas mark 1 and cook for 8 hours. Alternatively, transfer it to the lower, cooler Aga oven and leave to cook overnight. Remove the ham from the oven and carefully remove the foil. Transfer the ham to a chopping board and discard the vegetables and any leftover cider. Peel away the top layer of skin and score the fat in a criss-cross pattern. Line the roasting tin with foil and return the ham to it. Mix the golden syrup and mustard powder together and brush over the ham. Stick the cloves into the fat where the lines cross. Increase the heat of the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas mark 6 and when hot put in the ham to bake for 30–40 minutes, until it has taken on a deep golden colour. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for at least 20 minutes before serving.

SALMON EN CROUTE

PREPARATION TIME: 20 MINS. COOKING TIME: 45 MINS, PLUS COOLING. SERVES 6-8

A festive parcel wraps a mouth watering salmon that accompanies fresh watercress. INGREDIENTS

METHOD

20g (¾oz) unsalted butter

Preheat the oven to 210°C/410°F/Gas mark 6.

3 banana shallots, finely chopped 400g (14oz) spinach, washed Zest of 2 lemons 1kg (2¼lb) salmon fillet, skinned, pinned and trimmed 500g (1lb 2oz) block of puff pastry

Place the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat and sauté the shallots for 5 minutes until softened. Add the spinach to the pan and cook until it is wilted. This will probably take 5–7 minutes. Remove from the heat and transfer to a sieve. Press the spinach with a wooden spoon to squeeze out any excess water, then transfer to a mixing bowl. Add the lemon zest and some seasoning.

Flour, for dusting 1 egg, beaten Salt and pepper 200g (7oz) watercress, to serve

Place the salmon on a chopping board and cut it in half. Rub the cut side of a lemon over the top side. Cover the one piece of salmon with the cooked spinach and put the other piece of salmon on top to make an oversized salmon sandwich. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured worktop to approximately the thickness of a pound coin and to a size that will encase the salmon pieces. Then place the pastry on a lined baking sheet ready for the oven (this is so you don’t have to move the salmon again). Place the salmon on one half of the puff pastry, leaving a good 2.5cm (1 inch) border on three sides. Brush this border with a little of the beaten egg. Fold the pastry over the salmon, gently shaping it around the fish and squeezing out the air, then press down on all the edges to seal and trim off any excess pastry. Use the rest of the beaten egg to glaze the pastry and decorate by scoring with a knife. Place in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, 30 if you like your fish fully cooked through. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before carving and serving with fresh watercress.

APPLE CHARLOTTE WITH CINNAMON CREAM

PREPARATION TIME: 15 MINS, PLUS RESTING. COOKING TIME: 1 HR. SERVES 4-6

This pudding is a favourite with the family and is named after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III. INGREDIENTS

METHOD

450g (1lb) apples (half Bramley [cooking] and half Cox [eating] if possible), peeled, cored and chopped

Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas mark 6.

1 tbsp caster sugar 1 tsp powdered cinnamon 120g (4oz) butter 6–8 slices of bread about 1/2cm (¼in) thick, crusts removed 1 egg yolk

To Serve Whipped cream Powdered cinnamon, icing sugar and vanilla essence, to taste

Place the apples in a saucepan with the sugar, cinnamon and 30g (1oz) of the butter, place over a low heat and cook the apples until soft, which should take 10–15 minutes. Melt the remaining butter and cut the bread into rectangles. Dip one side of the bread into butter and line a 1 litre (13/4 pints) pudding basin, overlapping the slices, and press firmly into the mould, buttery side to the basin. When the apple mixture is cooled, beat the egg yolk into it and fill the bread-lined pudding basin. Seal the top with the remaining buttered bread slices, butter facing you. Place an ovenproof plate on top of the pudding with a suitable weight on top. Place to one side for 30 minutes. Put the pudding into the oven for 35 minutes. Carefully remove the plate from the top and continue to bake for 10 minutes until golden brown on top. Remove from the oven, leave to rest in the basin for 10 minutes before turning out onto a warmed plate to serve. Best served with softly whipped cream, flavoured as you like by stirring through cinnamon icing sugar and vanilla essence.

ARTS&CULTURE / THEATRE Gripping war-time drama Alone in Berlin brings Hans Fallada’s best-selling novel to the stage Royal & Derngate Northampton will be staging the world premiere of Alone in Berlin, adapted for the stage by Alistair Beaton from Hans Fallada’s acclaimed novel. Directed by Royal & Derngate’s Artistic Director James Dacre, the production opens in Northampton in February before transferring to York and Oxford. Set in 1940, the play is a gripping portrait of life in wartime Berlin and a vividly theatrical study of how paranoia can warp a society gripped by the fear of the night-time knock on the door. Based on true events, Alone in Berlin follows a quietly courageous couple who stand up to the brutal reality of the Nazi regime. With the smallest of acts, they defy Hitler’s rule – facing the gravest of consequences. It has been translated from the German and adapted by the celebrated playwright and translator Alistair

Beaton, whose numerous credits include Feelgood, Fracked!, Follow My Leader and The Trial of Tony Blair and adaptations of work by European literary giants such as Bertolt Brecht and Max Frisch. Alone in Berlin is part of Royal & Derngate’s Made in Northampton season and is a co-production with York Theatre Royal in association with Oxford Playhouse. The Made in Northampton season is sponsored by Michael Jones Jewellers.

What a fantastic year for The Lewis Foundation!

Cynthia Spencer Hospice invites you to attend their Tree of Love services and to dedicate a light on their tree to remember a loved one who won’t be with you this Christmas

I am sure by now you will all have heard and seen the fabulous work that Lorraine and Lee Lewis have been undertaking since 2016 – they launched the Lewis Foundation to support cancer patients in our hospitals who might need help with supplies during their treatment time – so items like toiletries, a toothbrush or even a magazine to look through in order to hopefully take their mind off their illness. This year the Lewis Foundation has given away the highest number of gifts so far and by the end of the year they will have given away over 24,000 gift bags to adults receiving cancer treatment in the Northampton General Hospital, BMI Three Shires - Northampton, Kettering General Hospital, Milton Keynes Hospital, Leicester Royal Infirmary and Bedford Hospital.

By dedicating a light and making a donation to the Hospice in memory of a loved one you will be remembering them and all the moments that brightened up your life. You will also be helping Cynthia Spencer Hospice to light up the lives of patients and their families, not only at Christmas, but the whole year through. The services take place on 12th December and 17th December at the Cathedral of our Lady & St Thomas, Barrack Road, Northampton. You can also make your dedications and donations by visiting www.cynthiaspencer.org.uk/ treeoflove and completing the online dedication form. Every donation will help light up the lives of Cynthia Spencer Hospice patients this Christmas and throughout the year.

They have had a record number of corporate businesses and individuals supporting their charity with activities such as fundraising, team building days of gift packing and holding collection drives for gift pack items. Supporters have included Nationwide and The Works. This year they won a National New Business Award and an East Midlands Charity Award for their work, which was an amazing recognition. The Lewis Foundation is preparing for its launch at 2 more hospitals and so 2020’s aim is to provide gifts at more hospitals around the UK and continue to support patients in our regions. For further details about The Lewis Foundation then please visit www.thelewisfoundation.co.uk or turn to pages 96 and 97 to see an overview of this year so far.

Northampton Museum and Art Gallery reaches major construction milestone The expansion of Northampton Museum and Art Gallery has now reached a major construction milestone, when the final panels of roof glazing were craned into the link atrium extension, making the building watertight.

The new Shoe Gallery is housed on the lower floor of the extension in a new gallery space, showcasing Northampton’s internationally renowned shoe collection. Councillor Jonathan Nunn, Leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “So much progress has been made since our building contractors Wildgoose Construction Limited began work almost a year ago, and now the building is watertight, we can begin the exciting work of creating our new galleries.

The glazed extension is the most significant new feature of the building, standing nine metres at its highest point, and linking the existing museum space to the new temporary exhibitions gallery, Shoe Gallery and The Studio schools and activity space.

“The museum is an integral part of the town’s expanding cultural quarter, and a major visitor attraction, presenting Northampton’s rich history and showcasing our wonderful shoe collection.”

The atrium creates large communal space, which includes a café and a south-facing outdoor terrace, overlooking the museum’s courtyard.

Set to open in spring 2020, the museum will also feature a selling gallery with a focus on local artists and makers, a dedicated schools and activity space, a central hall major events space and a refurbished art gallery.

“The atrium will be a brilliant space for people to meet and relax, whilst enjoying everything the museum has to offer, and we’re delighted to reach this important milestone.” JO NAT HA N NUNN

Puppies at Christmas,

energetic adolescents by Easter Christmas, more than ever, is a time for joy, presents and togetherness. Wood Green, The Animals Charity understands how wonderful it can be to have a pet, especially during the festive period, however is encouraging people to think long and hard before bringing a new pet home this December. Owning a pet is one of the most rewarding things that people can do, but it requires a range of considerations to ensure that it’s the right choice in the long term, based on the owner’s lifestyle and the pet’s physical and emotional wellbeing. The cuteness of puppies given as gifts can be so appealing, yet when they reach adolescence, reality hits home about how much commitment a pet needs.

supporting thousands of people with services including pet advice and behavioural training. Anyone considering a new pet, or experiencing challenges with an existing pet, is encouraged to contact Wood Green for free guidance and support. The charity’s dedicated team of veterinary staff and animal carers are on hand around the clock to provide essential treatment to vulnerable pets when they need help the most, through life-saving treatment, shelter and love until they find a forever home. This is no different throughout the Christmas period, with pets requiring the same level of love and care every day. This work is only possible because of the generosity of the public.

Every spring, Wood Green sees an increase in the number of young dogs brought to its Cambridgeshire rehoming centre by owners who can no longer cope. Puppies and young dogs, in particular, require a lot of exercise, training and patience. Any pet is a commitment that cannot be taken lightly, so it is surprising that one in five people do no research before taking on a pet. The detailed matchmaking process is key for Wood Green, who rehomes thousands of pets each year as well as

Time to Veg Out! You may be surprised to learn that there’s a charity for older vegetarians and vegans! Vegetarians for Life (VfL) was established in 2008 to promote that no-one should be forced to give up on their dietary preferences (or needs) just because they are older. As part of The Hawthorns Group, The Hawthorns Northampton retirement living community is a proud member of VfL’s directory, a 1,300 strong list of veggie-friendly organisations in the UK. Even as a recent member, the company has been nominated in VfL’s 2019 Awards for Excellence in Vegetarian Care Catering, with the finals in London in October. Amanda Woodvine, VfL Chief Executive, commented “The number of vegetarians and vegans has trebled in the last five years and they have understandable concerns that their dietary needs and preferences can be met throughout their retirement, with variety of food prepared separately to meat products.” Chefs at The Hawthorns provide first-class vegetarian and vegan options, which take into account religious and cultural dietary needs as well as resident dining preferences and awareness. Many residents enjoy that it is a lighter option to

eat vegetarian, whilst others see its importance in reducing our dependency upon meat and moving towards a more vegetarian diet to support planet resource sustainability. Combine all this with The Hawthorns Northampton holding the coveted Hospitality Assured Award for extraordinary levels of service and your active and healthy retirement is just around the corner. An Ultra Modern Verona Tru Kitchen… When you decide to take the plunge and replace your kitchen it is always a daunting task of working out what your budget is, how to design something that will ultimately fit your space and how to choose something that will be modern in design and last you a lifetime. This was the decision that Mr & Mrs Roy from Northampton were faced with as they felt the time had come to update the heart of their home. The couple realized that the space they had ideally could do with being bigger and so found a local builder that could take care of their extension and who could perhaps recommend a kitchen company. The family also had a recommendation from their neighbour for Premier Kitchens & Bedrooms who had recently fitted a new kitchen for them which they loved. Mr & Mrs Roy visited a number of different kitchen companies and after careful consideration decided that Premier Kitchens & Bedrooms offered the best service during the design process and they were happy with the knowledge of the recommendation from their neighbour; having seen the quality of the kitchen and installation at their neighbours property they booked an appointment with Premier Kitchens & Bedrooms for their free plan and design service. Like Mr and Mrs Roy, I experienced the same warm welcome when I bought my kitchen several years ago now – the Premier knowledgeable Demonstrators were more than happy to show us exactly what could be offered. One of the services that we were super impressed with was the FREE 3D plan

CLASS OF THE FIELD Range Rover's Evoque has demolished all sales records for SUVs in this class. Jonathan Crouch reports on how the latest MK2 model aims to stay in the top spot. Ten Second Review

versions to rival the returns of a citycar. All to be delivered with class-leading off road expertise. In a car right for its times. Quite a build-up. Quite a car? Let's find out.

How do you right a best seller? That was Land Rover's problem when it came to creating the second generation version of its runaway success story, the Range Rover Evoque, a car that now accounts for a third of the brand's total sales. It's a fashionable, yet capable proposition that has fundamentally changed the premium mid-sized SUV market and rivals now have to contend with an evolved version that features a more efficient range of diesel and petrol engines, including electrified and mild hybrid technology. Plus there's smarter styling, more interior space, extra off road ability and sharper handling thanks to an all-new 'PTA' platform. As a result, if you want an SUV of this kind, this is still the one to beat.

Driving Experience The Evoque range is primarily focused on Ingenium fourcylinder units. All automatic versions of this model, regardless of whether they're diesel or petrol, will have a 48-volt mild hybrid system equipped with an 8Ah lithium-ion battery. The petrol derivatives produce 197bhp, 247bhp and 296bhp, while the diesels develop 148bhp, 178bhp and 237bhp. Your dealer can offer you a manual gearbox available on the entry-level front-driven diesel, but the remainder of the models in the range will come with the brand's latest nine-speed automatic. A less powerful three-cylinder turbo petrol powerplant has also been developed for this MK2 model, an engine you'll be able to order either as a standalone unit or as part of a plug-in hybrid configuration.

Background It's getting on for half a century since all-wheel driving was revolutionised by the Range Rover, a car now a class apart in the luxury 4x4 sector. But what would that model look like re-invented in smaller form for very different Millennial times, an age in which fashion and frugality are as important as toughness and traction? Something like this we think, the Range Rover Evoque, here rejuvenated in second generation form.

As before, all but the most basic Evoques will come with 4WD but their transmission features a 'driveline disconnect' feature which will see the car default to a front-driven configuration unless a loss of traction dictates otherwise. An 'Active Driveline' system will be optionally available, which uses a rear-mounted double-clutch which offers torque vectoring on the rear axle to aid corner turn-in. Off-road ability is enhanced with the fitment of 'Terrain Response 2' tech from the larger range Rover that analyses the road surface and adjusts the transmission to suit. Wading depth is up 100mm to 600mm too.

As before, it sets out to meet a daunting set of challenges, aiming to provide luxurious room for four in a shape shorter than a Ford Focus. Along with handling as satisfying as a sports coupe. And economy that might allow green-minded NORTHANTS / BUCKS | DEC / JAN 2020

Market & Model Pricing isn't much different, starting from just over £32,000. There are four main trim levels - standard Evoque, 'S', 'SE' and 'HSE', all with sportier 'R-Dynamic' sub-derivatives available for an extra £1,500. It all means that it's now possible to pay up to £50,000 for an Evoque. You can specify a Head-up display. Plus Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring at last make an appearance. All variants get LED auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, ambient cabin lighting, dualzone climate control, and a heated windscreen. Upgrade yourself from standard 'Evoque' trim to 'S'-spec and you get perforated leather, electrically adjustable front seats, an improved infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, auto dimming on the side mirrors and rear-view mirror, and traffic sign recognition with an adaptive speed limiter. If you can move further up the range, 'SE'-spec gives you high-beam assist headlights and 'sweeping' LED indicators, plus 20in alloys, extra power adjustment and heating for the front seats, an interactive driver display, an electrically powered tailgate and a parking pack that includes a rear traffic monitor. Finally,

'HSE' trim upgrades the leather upholstery and brings a 380W Meridian sound system, the ClearSight rear-view mirror camera, gesture control for the powered tailgate, adaptive cruise control and a different finish of 20-inch alloys.

Summary Land Rover has spent its money wisely with this second generation Evoque. This car's just become significantly more economical and capable, both on road and off. Just about the only thing that can really sink this model is for it to go horribly out of fashion. That doesn't look like happening any time soon, but just in case, Land Rover has concentrated on substance over style with this MK2 model. In doing so, the brand has future-proofed its biggest money-spinner. In summary then, the Evoque is now even easier to recommend than it was before. It's the only car in the premium compact SUV segment with a conceivable appeal to lifestyle buyers not necessarily searching for a premium mid-sized SUV - and that says a lot. If you are in the market for something of this kind, can stretch to the asking price and can afford not to place too much of a premium on practicality, then you won't be disappointed. This is, quite simply, the class of the field. Words by Jonathan Crouch, Car & Driving NORTHANTS / BUCKS | DEC / JAN 2020
