Such a fast pace summer it was indeed and happy to embrace what is ahead!

What an exciting season as it started with our Fashion Couture Under the Stars, for our cover event showcasing boutiques carrying top designers clothing.

Fashion... does it define us? Fashion is how we express ourselves and it’s our way to show the world who we are. People can dress up, dress down, wear jeans, dresses, or any type of clothing that allows them to share their individuality. It’s obvious what things are in and out of style, but the question is: does fashion define who we are as people? Today’s society is in love with brand names. Some people love brand names because it makes them feel better about themselves when they’re wearing it. That’s why it’s called retail therapy. So in essence the brands that define us, build the confidence we have when we wear certain styles. Like that pair of shoes or dress and it feels just right and the label sets it in place.

We realize that fashion shouldn’t define us, but it does. Fashion is an ever growing industry and it gives us the opportunity to share who we are in a multitude of different ways. Fashion is important because it shows a level of self expression and style.

The fashion spectrum is in all colors, styles and shapes but we always enjoy the seasons to the fullest by dressing the part and feeling good of how we feel.

As October begins, I am reminded how much I enjoy the layers of dressing in more of a fashion choice of clothing. I recently attended the always wonderful Fashion Week, as the city was at an all time hype. I witnessed the creativity of top designers bringing their imagination once again to new levels. On the cover is Angel Sanchez, with a style that we all would love to wear and Carolina Herrera showcased much pink in her Spring/Summer 2016 collection and that is a color I am a fan of. Speaking of pink, October brings much awareness, as it is Breast Cancer month, Domestic Violence, Lupus, and National Diabetes month, so be sure to remember those who are affected by these hardships and share your love and support.

With the enjoyment of lighter clothing for the summer, the coolness of the season ahead, had to check back into that winter is around the corner! Well not too soon as there is much planning ahead for the festivities. Enjoy the season as it brings warmth into your homes and love to your heart. Remember each quarter INDULGE magazine will provide the readership in top notch style.

Louboutin Launches New Lipstick Collection

ngel Sanchez launched his 2016 collection CAYENA, on September 15 for its fourth time in a row during NYFW. “With This collection I wanted to recreate a tropical garden, filled with light, dramatic shapes and of course a lot of color.“ It was inspired by the exuberant flower from the Caribbean: CAYENA- also known as Hibiscus, very popular in the tropical Islands.

“My main purpose was to portray its vivacious form and its intense colors through dramatic pieces.”

After doing numerous collections avoiding adornment, Angel Sanchez makes a strong comeback by using the details of the flower as the main element.

“I used several unique techniques and materials: acrylic, plastic, leather and other rare fibers that make every piece exclusive.”

The color palette is very bright and bold, He wasn’t afraid of using all types of greens, yellows, oranges and fuchsias. However he used white as a symbol of shining light from the Tropic.

As the designer said; “Cayena it’s a very fresh, vivid and radiant collection.”

In this collection the most important material was the silk gauze, perfect to create voluptuous and dramatic shapes.

“I wanted to take several references from the traditional couture from the 50s, with an interpretation of being free and absolutely Caribbean, creating what I call a Tropical Couture.”

A book that changed me... There isn’t a book that has changed me, but I have favourites such as ‘Pride and Prejudice’ which I often re-read.

At night I dream of... At night I sleep, and I dream during the day. I have lots of fantasies in my mind. I think people need room for that.

Movie heaven... I like old ones like ‘Death in Venice’ and new ones.

Some films, like that ‘Avatar’, need to be seen on a big screen.

What I see when I look in the mirror... is someone I know very well. I rather like her.

My secret crush... I won’t tell you – because then it wouldn’t be a secret.

My favourite item of clothing... is always a very glamorous evening gown. The colour depends on the occasion. I rarely wear red but I had one in red that I kept coming back to because I had lots of fun every time I wore it.

My greatest regret... is not being an opera singer like Maria Callas.

Scrumptious Apple Pie

Ingredients Pastry 2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 2/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons shortening, 4 to 6 tablespoons cold water Filling 1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon salt, 8 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples (8 medium), 2 tablespoons butter or margarine Directions 1 In medium bowl, mix 2 cups flour and 1 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening, using pastry blender (or pulling 2 table knives through ingredients in opposite directions), until particles are size of small peas. Sprinkle with cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with fork until all flour is moistened and pastry almost cleans side of bowl (1 to 2 teaspoons more water can be added if necessary).

2 Gather pastry into a ball. Divide in half; shape into 2 flattened rounds on lightly floured surface. Wrap in plastic wrap; refrigerate about 45 minutes or until dough is firm and cold, yet pliable. This allows the shortening to become slightly firm, which helps make the baked pastry more flaky. If refrigerated longer, let pastry soften slightly before rolling.

3 Heat oven to 425°F. With floured rolling pin, roll one pastry round into round 2 inches larger than upside-down 9-inch glass pie plate. Fold pastry into fourths; place in pie plate. Unfold and ease into plate, pressing firmly against bottom and side.

4 In large bowl, mix sugar, 1/4 cup flour, the cinnamon, nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Stir in apples until well mixed. Spoon into pastry-lined pie plate. Cut butter into small pieces; sprinkle over filling. Trim overhanging edge of pastry 1/2 inch from rim of plate.

5 Roll other round of pastry into 10-inch round. Fold into fourths and cut slits so steam can escape. Unfold top pastry over filling; trim overhanging edge 1 inch from rim of plate.

Fold and roll top edge under lower edge, pressing on rim to seal; flute as desired. Cover edge with 2- to 3-inch strip of foil to prevent excessive browning.

6 Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until crust is brown and juice begins to bubble through slits in crust, removing foil for last 15 minutes of baking. Serve warm if desired.

Rhubarb Custard Pie

Ingredients 1 sheet refrigerated pie dough (from a 14.1-ounce package), 1 1/4 pounds rhubarb (about 6 medium stems), trimmed, halved lengthwise and cut into 1-inch pieces (about 4 1/2 cups), 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon finely grated orange zest, preferably Valencia, 2 tablespoons orange juice, preferably Valencia, 2 large eggs 2/3 cup heavy cream, 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, Confectioners’ sugar, for serving Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Fit the pie dough into a 9-inch pie plate, fluting the edges, and chill until set, about 15 minutes. Prick the bottom and sides with a fork, and then line the crust with aluminum foil. Fill with pie weights or dried beans and bake until the edges of the crust are just golden, 20 minutes. Remove the foil with the pie weights and continue to bake until the bottom of the crust is dry and lightly browned, another 10 to 15 minutes. Cool completely.

Toss the rhubarb with 1/4 cup granulated sugar and the orange zest and juice until well combined. Transfer to the crust and spread to form an even layer. Place the pie on a rimmed baking sheet. Whisk the eggs with the cream, flour and remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar until smooth, and then pour over the rhubarb. Bake until the pie is lightly browned, puffed and no longer wet in the center, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack. Before serving, lightly dust with confectioners’ sugar.

Ingredients Pumpkin: 1 medium sugar pumpkin (about 3 pounds), Canola oil, for oiling pumpkin Easy Pie Crust: 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for flouring, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 2/3 cup (11 tablespoons) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces Filling: One 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk, 1/2 cup whipping cream, 2 tablespoons cornstarch, 2 tablespoons molasses, 2 tablespoons canola oil, 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 3 large eggs Directions For the pumpkin: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Remove the stem from the pumpkin and scrape out the insides, discarding the seeds. Cut the pumpkin in half and lay the pieces cut-side down on a rimmed baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Rub canola oil all over the skin and bake until fork-tender, about 1 hour. Let cool.

For the easy pie crust: While the pumpkin is cooking, make the crust. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add in the butter and work into the dough with a fork until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in just enough cold water (4 to 5 tablespoons) with a fork just until the flour is moistened. Divide the dough in half, shape each half into a ball and flatten slightly. Wrap one ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for another use.

Roll out the remaining dough ball on a lightly floured surface to a 12-inch round. Transfer to a 9-inch-diameter glass pie dish. Fold the overhangs under and crimp decoratively. Pierce the dough all over with a fork. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.

Line the crust with foil, fill with dried beans or pie weights and bake until the sides are set, about 12 minutes. Remove the foil and beans. Reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. For the filling: Scoop out the pulp from the roasted pumpkin and puree in a food processor until smooth (you should have about 4 cups). Add the condensed milk, cream, cornstarch, molasses, canola oil, cinnamon, ginger, salt and eggs and combine thoroughly.

Pour the filling into the crust and bake until the filling is set in the center, about 1 hour. Transfer the pie to a rack and cool for 30 minutes. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Ricotta Gnocchi

Whip up this deliciously easy-to-make, savory gnocchi dish and pair it with Ruinart Blanc de Blancs for the ultimate holiday dinner. After all, nothing screams celebration like pasta and Champagne. Known for its vibrancy, freshness and elegance, this Blanc de Blancs features a bouquet reminiscent of Meyer lemons, ripe pineapple and fresh ginger that works wonders with the creaminess of the sauce. 2 cups packed whole-milk ricotta cheese 2 large eggs 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese 1½ –2 cups all-purpose flour, as needed 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup fresh peas, blanched 1 cup chopped kale Kosher salt, to taste Freshly ground black pepper, to taste In a large bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, eggs and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Season with salt and pepper. Add the flour, ½ cup at a time, until a soft dough is formed. To add flour, simply fold the dough in half onto itself, adding a little flour each time you fold.

Shape the dough into long ropes, about ½- to 1-inch thick. Cut into ½- to 1-inch pieces. In a pot filled with boiling, lightly salted water, drop gnocchi and cook until it floats. Remove immediately and drain in a colander.

Paired with Ruinart Blanc de Blancs

In a sauté pan over medium heat, add the butter, kale and peas, and cook for 1 minute. Add the gnocchi and heat through.

Season to taste with salt. Plate and top with kale pesto. Serves 8.

For the Kale Pesto 2 cups roughly chopped fresh kale 2 garlic cloves, chopped ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese ¼ cup pine nuts 2 teaspoons lemon juice ½ teaspoon black pepper ¼ cup olive oil Kosher salt, to taste Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Have a large bowl of ice water on reserve. Add the kale to the boiling water and cook for about 2 minutes. Remove the kale from boiling water with a slotted spoon and immediately place into the ice water.

Croquetas de Jamón Serrano Paired with Ruinart Rosé

Leg of lamb, bone-in, approximately 5 pounds 3 tablespoons dried rosemary 2 tablespoons dried oregano 1 tablespoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon coriander seeds 3 tablespoons coarse sea salt 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Preheat oven to 450˚F. Place the leg of lamb on a flat work surface. Grind the

rosemary, oregano, thyme, coriander seeds and sea salt in a mortar and pestle until finely ground. Transfer to a small bowl and add the garlic, mustard and olive oil.

Mix well to make a paste, and rub evenly over the entire leg of lamb.

Reduce oven to 325˚F. Place the leg of lamb on a baking rack and roast to medium-rare, approximately 1½–2 hours, or until the internal temperature reads 145˚F. Serves 8.

3 tablespoons olive oil 1 cup yellow onion, minced 4 tablespoons flour 1 cup milk Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 cup Gorgonzola dolce cheese ¼ pound jamon serrano, finely diced 3 eggs, beaten 2 cups of breadcrumbs (Japanese or regular, unflavored) Vegetable oil, for frying In a saucepan over medium-low, heat the olive oil. Add the onions and cook until transparent.

With a wooden spoon, stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Whisk in the milk. Cook until the sauce thickens, about 15–20 minutes, stirring constantly. Season the mixture with salt and

pepper. Remove from heat and fold in the cheese and jamon serrano. Spread the mixture onto a large baking sheet. Refrigerate until solid.

In a bowl, add eggs. In a separate bowl, add breadcrumbs. Form the chilled mixture into 1-inch round balls or 2-inch long cylinders.

Dip each croqueta into the breadcrumbs, then in beaten egg, and back in the breadcrumbs, making sure that they are well breaded. Place the croquetas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

In a deep fry pan, heat the vegetable oil to 350˚F. Fry the croquetas a few at a time until golden, about 3 minutes. Remove and place on paper towels to drain. Serve with your favorite marmalade. Serves 4–6.

Moroccan Pumpkin Soup

This tasty twist on the traditional fall starter brings flavors of Northern Africa to the Thanksgiving Day table with touches of cumin and turmeric, which are softened with cream and fresh pumpkin.

A beautiful pairing for Veuve Clicquot Brut, the texture and depth of the soup lends to the Yellow Label’s minerality, citrus and brioche notes, and makes for a most memorable Turkey Day delight.

1 medium cooking pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut into 1-inch cubes 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 7 tablespoons chives, minced (divided into 3 tbsp and 4 tbsp) 8 tablespoons softened butter, plus 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 large onion, diced 1 parsnip, diced 3 carrots, diced ½ teaspoon cumin ¼ teaspoon turmeric 4 cups vegetable stock ½ cups heavy cream 1 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground Preheat oven to 375°F. Spread pumpkin cubes on a metal baking sheet and drizzle with the olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, and bake until tender, approximately 35-40

minutes. Let cool for 30 minutes.

While the pumpkin roasts and cools, combine three tablespoons of minced chives with butter and black pepper. Using plastic wrap, roll into a log and refrigerate for 2 hours. When it’s firm, remove the log from the plastic wrap and slice into 8 equal rounds.

In a large stockpot, melt the remaining butter and sauté the onion, parsnip and carrots until tender, about 7-9 minutes. Add the roasted pumpkin, cumin and turmeric, and continue to sauté for 5 additional minutes. Remove from heat and transfer to a food processor or blender in small batches. Process until all of the vegetables are puréed. Return the purée to the stockpot and add the vegetable stock. When it boils, about 15-20 minutes, reduce the heat and add the cream and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Herbes de Provence Roast Turkey Paired with Veuve Clicquot Rosé

Working from the neck end, use your fingers or a small knife to loosen the skin covering the turkey breasts. Work the herb rub under the skin on each breast, being careful not to tear the skin. Using your hands evenly spread the remaining rub over the entire turkey.

Combine the sea salt and remaining herbes de Provence and sprinkle over top of turkey.

Cook in the oven for 4-5 hours, until a meat thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the thigh reaches 165°F. Allow the turkey to rest for 30 minutes, carve and serve. Serves 8.

Potato Pancakes topped with Butter Poached Lobster and Caviar Add a twist to the traditional holiday meal by serving a beautiful butter poached lobster on a simple yet elegant potato pancake, topped with caviar, and pair it with the prestigious Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2004. This unconventional match is marvelously transformative. The crisp yet silky texture combined with the chalky mineral notes of this full-bodied bubbly stand up nicely to the rich, clean poached lobster and salty caviar. With each bite discover the depth of this complex wine as notes of white peach, apricot and nougat are brought to the forefront. It will leave your palate craving more.

Fit your food processer with the grating wheel attachment and coarsely grate potatoes and onion. Transfer to a large glass-mixing bowl.

Using your hands, squeeze out as much water as you can and discard the liquid. Add the egg, flour, salt and pepper, and toss with your hands until well combined.

Pour 1 inch of oil into a large flat-bottomed frying pan and heat until very hot, approximately 360–370˚F. Using a large slotted spoon, spoon the potato mixture into the oil and fry until crisp, then turn over and fry the other side until crisp and brown. Only fry 3 or 4 pancakes at a time to keep the oil temperature hot, and feel free to add more oil as necessary. Remove pancakes to a paper towel lined plate and place in a 250˚F oven

Fill ¾ of a large stockpot with water and the remaining salt to boil. Add the lobster tails and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from the water and let cool in a large bowl filled with ice for 5 minutes.

Using a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Cut the lobster tails in half lengthwise and place them meat side down in the melted butter.

Poach for 5 minutes and then turn over and poach for an additional 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and remove the lobster tail meat from the shell. Discard the shells and return the lobster meat to the pan to keep warm while you assemble the plate.

1½ cups whole-wheat flour 1½ cups semolina flour 1 teaspoon finely ground sea salt 1/3 cup Sicilian extra virgin olive oil, plus additional for rubbing 1 cup warm water 1 teaspoon coarsely ground sea salt Using a stand mixer, whisk together both flours and the finely ground sea salt for 1 minute. Change to the dough hook attachment and add the olive oil and warm water. Using medium speed, mix for approximately 6–8 minutes, or until you have a large ball of dough.

Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces.

Rub each with the remaining olive oil and place on a plate. Cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 45–60 minutes.

Preheat oven to 450˚F. Using a rolling pin, roll out one ball of dough to 1-inch thickness. Cut into 1-inch wide strips and transfer to a pizza stone or a metal baking pan lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt and bake until crisp and golden, approximately 5–7 minutes.

Repeat with remaining balls of dough.

Makes approximately 48 crackers.

Saffron Risotto

Add the butter

and chopped shallots and let cook. Add the unwashed rice and cook, stirring constantly.

Do not allow rice and shallots to brown.

Stir in the wine and cook until it’s fully absorbed.

Next, add hot chicken stock and saffron, and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring frequently.

Add additional hot stock as necessary. After the first 7–10 minutes, season with sea salt.

When the rice is cooked, remove from heat and mix in the grated Parmesan and some additional butter. Adjust the seasoning and divide among four plates. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with Parmesan shavings and decorate with gold leaf, if desired. Serves 4.

Meet the Maker:

aron Joffe of Farmer D Organics

aron Joffe was a freshman in college, eating a turkey sandwich, when he had an epiphany.

“I thought, where did this turkey sandwich come from?” he says. “I had never thought about it before. I’d never grown anything or known anybody who had. I thought, I need to learn how to grow a turkey sandwich.”

These days Joffe — better known by his nickname, Farmer D — isn’t just growing sandwich ingredients. He’s empowering others to understand where their food comes from through his company Farmer D Organics.

Joffe was born in South Africa and raised in Atlanta, but it was his experiences in college, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, that paved the way for his career in farming and gardening. There, he studied at the Michael Fields Institute Biodynamic Learning Center, attending workshops and working on an organic farm, learning about growing healthy food with intention.

He also started paying attention to major issues in today’s agriculture: the loss of the small family farm and industrialized farming using chemicals and pesticides, to name a couple. “That turkey sandwich went over 3,000 miles to get to my plate, burning a huge trail of fossil fuels, and there were chemicals and preservatives on the tomatoes and bread your body doesn’t want to digest,” he says. “Also, we’re spending money outside of the local community when we could be supporting the local economy.”

He went home to Atlanta his freshman year to tell his parents he was leaving school to pursue a career in organic farming, and it was his mom 98 indulgememagazine.com

who came up with his new moniker. “She said, ‘OK, Farmer D,’ as a joke, but she and my friends kept calling me that, and it became my name.”

What followed were three apprenticeships, the purchase of a farm in southwest Wisconsin and a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). Joffe also held school field trips for kids on the farm. He brought the farm into downtown Madison with his food truck — a falafel cart — using produce he’d grown and trying to interest people in what he was doing. He set up gardens in day cares, summer camps and other urban settings, ultimately starting a nonprofit organization, “Gan Chaim,” meaning “garden of life.”

“Going to summer camp helped me get excited about nature,” says Joffe.

“The one thing missing was good food. I thought, how cool would it be if I brought a garden and farm to summer camps, teaching kids to grow their own food? When a child is in a garden and picks something they’ve grown, they have a completely different relationship with food than they would in a restaurant. It fosters healthy eating habits and a spiritual connection to nature — a primitive, rich experience I wanted to share with people.”

Joffe focus is in growing and harvesting vegetables: tomatoes, squash, peppers and zucchinis, along with herbs (he’s partial to oregano). “People get intimidated by starting things from seed, but once you start you realize how quick, easy and cheap it is,” he says.

“You make a little hole, add the seeds, nurture it every day, and when it grows up it becomes strong and resilient and independent. In 25 days you can have a mature arugula plant. It’s amazing.”

And the most important tool, according Joffe, is your hands. “That’s one of the beauties of raised bed gardening: you can do it all with your hands.”

A digging fork, a trowel and a stirrup hoe can make the job a little easier, he adds.

“The most rewarding aspect of my job are the responses I get from people who have had success in their projects, whether it’s a backyard garden or a farm or community garden,” he says. “Healthy food grows healthy people. When that connection is made, it brings people together and inspires them.”

Belize With an eventful history, diverse culture, and a spectacular array of wildlife, Belize is an exciting place. There is still much to be discovered about the country, though, and it holds as much mystery as it has observable natural beauty. 1. Belize’s tallest building is a Mayan temple Countries around the world compete for the world’s tallest building, frequently building skyscrapers that tower higher than their predecessors.

Belize knows that size doesn’t matter. The tallest building is in Caracol and, at 137 feet, it is appropriately called El Caana (“Sky Place”). You can climb to the top and see for miles over the rainforest canopies.

About 900 Mayan ruins are scattered throughout the Belizean landscape, places where the ancient Maya lived, and built impressive structures to house their elite and worship. Some of these ruins are over 1500 years old, and many still lie undiscovered beneath the forest floor.

2. 42% of Belize’s land is protected Belize has 95 protected areas, including terrestrial and marine national parks, national monuments, wildlife sanctuaries, archaeological reserves, nature reserves and private conservation areas. In the country’s three nature reserves, there is no access without a permit, and only researchers can enter.

To throw in a couple more interesting facts about Belize, over half of the country is rainforest, home to 540 species of birds, and also contains the only jaguar preserve in the world, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. With so much to treasure, is it any wonder that the people of Belize want to protect their wildlife.

3. There are 3 times more tourists each year than the national population With a population of about 313,000 people, the country receives nearly 1 million tourists every year. Tourism is Belize’s largest source of revenue, and one in four residents of the country is involved in the industry. Belize’s low population density, combined with its abundance of natural wonders, means that many more tourists visit the country each year than there are national residents.

4. Only 10% of Belize’s barrier reef species have been discovered At 185 miles, the Belize barrier reef is the largest in the Western hemisphere.

It is currently known to house over 500 species of fish. However, marine biologists estimate that only 10% of barrier reef species have been discovered. With 90% still a mystery, there could be all kinds of weird and wonderful creatures out there.

5. Belize has no Starbucks, McDonalds, Burger King, or KFC The last of our interesting facts about Belize is that it lacks the franchises many people take for granted. Most of Belize’s tourists are American, and used to an abundance of fast food chains wherever they go. Many of them are surprised to find none of the staples they are accustomed to in Belize. Instead, Belize’s cultural diversity means there is a plethora of delicious dishes to try, from Mestizo panades (a fried corn patty) to Garifuna cassava bread.

Todt Hill Fashionista Decorates Her Home

W

hen building a home of this magnitude, home decor is time consuming but a great experience and worth it, says Kiran homeowner of this fabulous home.

Kiran shares her experience with her style in decorating her home: In her search to decorate, she met up with Fendi to Georgio Armani Casa to all the designers in D&D building; the biggest designer power house in NY - I liked them all and was confused as to who to hire, they’re all so good and their furniture was gorgeous!

But there was a waiting list for months since these designers are so busy. I love fashion and have an eye for interiors so I thought why not decorate my house myself. Since it was my own house I thought of taking the risk and put things together.

I hired a designer to hand paint the ceilings to match the marble floor in the kitchen and around the skyline in the lounge - the furniture was all made to order from different stores in the city most of the stuff was from Safaviah and Arhaus. Some pieces were from West Elm like the cushions on the sofa’s to match the

marble ceiling and the lights. The paintings were from different art galleries again made to order. Some were from Safaviah. Carpets were from Macy’s since they offer a huge collection of rugs and carpets.

The idea was to give it a cozy and warm environment, that’s why not too much color was used. Kept it simple and elegant hence utilizing gold and white with a pop of red in the carpet. The vases under the staircase just added a homely feeling since I love plants I thought it would be a great idea to have two inside.

The dining furniture was also made to order. The 12 seater cloth was selected to match the painting on the ceiling and the green in the marble on the floor.

Marble was imported which took two years. The ceiling and wood work was hand made design and moldings.

Wood work never goes out of fashion or style hence there’s plenty of wood work inside to accent.

Listen to your Gut

most recently had an early morning cup of coffee with my dad, and during our chat, we began speaking about probiotics. He was spending a decent amount of money on a daily probiotic, and wasn’t sure if it was providing him with any health benefits within the gut. My father was diagnosed with a sluggish thyroid a few years back; he was put on medication and hasn’t been able to lose the stubborn ten pounds around his midsection even though he is in excellent overall health. He thought that maybe if he began taking probiotics, it would help him lose the excess weight. However, without the proper understanding of what the probiotic was doing, he couldn’t visualize it helping him lose the weight. It then dawned on me that my dad wasn’t alone in this need for clarification regarding the gut microbiome; and how it’s possible to stay healthy and possibly lose weight, while achieving overall homeostasis through a wellmaintained gut.

Research has shown that our gut has over a trillion different bacteria that are producing essential vitamins and hormones. The gut can affect everything from battling the common cold, to feeling happy, along with the speeding up and slowing down of our metabolism. Diabetes, depression, and obesity are all impacted by the health of our gut flora, since it totally communicates with the central nervous system by chemicals and hormones produced from within. You can coincide with reducing your stress levels by doing some peaceful gardening, taking a 30 minute brisk walk, or practicing a daily meditation at the beach. The point is, “get outside!”

Do not be so quick to go on an antibiotic if it’s not completely necessary.

Consult your doctor or physician to see if it’s okay to hold off somedays; let your body do its part and fight off the illness on its own when possible.

Probiotics and Prebiotics Probiotic’s are the helpful bacteria for the gut. They are live bacteria that promote the growth of beneficial gut flora, which in turn can produce chemicals and hormones needed for the body to stay all around healthy.

Foods that are good for the gut include: yogurts, tempeh (soy product), miso, ginger beer, and kombucha (a type of tea). Many opt for the probiotic supplement, which is not a bad idea. Any mid-priced supplement should suffice for quality.

Prebiotics pass through the stomach and small intestine, and then end up in the large intestine stimulating growth of healthy bacteria. Think of high fiber foods such as: chicory, asparagus, onions, garlic, and dandelion greens. You need a mixture of both probiotic and prebiotic for a healthy gut!

Gut Friendly Diet Disease fighting foods that are high in fiber are great for digestion, these include: citrus fruit, fiber-rich fruits such as pears and apples, along with leafy greens and yellow vegetables. To flatten the tummy, consume moderate amounts of avocado, brown rice, dark chocolate, nuts, oatmeal, olive oil, seeds, and drink an adequate amount of green tea.

Avoid processed foods, as they can lead to gut inflammation and possible feelings of bloating.

We all know how the sensation of an upset stomach can transcend over the entire mind and body. Doing everything we can to make sure that we are taking care of our gut will not only be proactive, but it will ensure overall good health. These little “healthy tips” play a major influence on our present moods and over all state of wellness. So listen to that gut and treat it with care.

contemporary smartphones were becoming outdated in relation to the ebb and flow of modern life. Phones should be wearable, and beautifully imagined. We introduced The Ruby Collection in February 2015 with the hope that it would redefine how people communicate and reimagine the use of precious metals and gemstones in mobile design.

A signature accessory ties the pieces of any outfit together while defining the aesthetic of the artist. I had the ambition that The Ruby Collection would become such a signature, and it has become my ode to Modernist architecture. I wanted to design something that looked forward and backward – timeless yet new.

When designing Ruby, I gathered inspiration from a variety of sources, but kept returning to the idea of how a butterfly would look resting on the side of the Broad Museum on the campus of Michigan State University.

The seeds of decades past continue to bring us opportunities for enjoyment and bolstered communal strength, yielding a diverse harvest of activities tied to some of our most esteemed landmarks. These abundant traditions, both old and new, have paved the way for residents (and visitors alike) to appreciate the wide variety of enriching sights and sounds offered by what is arguably autumn’s most beautiful borough.

Much is owed to the land in which we call home and occupy daily, bound lovingly to its surplus of parks and unique geographical setting. The Stirn Mansion Rebirth To Casa Belvedere

T

his neo-Renaissance, Italianate style magnificent mansion is an excellent example of early 20th-century country house design, one of the few remaining of its kind on Staten Island. Often described as “Gatsby like”, this sprawling estate is truly a gem with ornate, ionic columns, arched windows, arts and crafts detailing, decorative iron railings, Tiffany stained glass motifs, a terracotta clay tile roof, front and rear porticos, decorative finials and borders and more.

It was built in 1908 as the country home of Louis Stirn and Laura Roebling-Stirn. Louis Stirn was born in a suburb of Franfurt, Germany and the son of a Lutheran clergyman and his devoted wife. At the age of 14, Louis Stirn left Germany for New York and later went on to became a silk merchant distributing silks, velvets, ribbons and chiffons to leading retailers like Marshall Field and Co. When Louis Stirn moved to Staten Island he married Laura Natalie Methfessel in 1888. Laura was the daughter of Professor Anton Gotlieb Methfessel and Laura A. Roebling Methfessel. The professor was considered one of the most prominent educators on Staten Island and founded the Methfessel School in 1862. The boys boarding and day school would go on to become the Staten Island Academy. How 148 indulgememagazine.com

interesting that this one home has connections to the family that built the Brooklyn Bridge and founded one of the best academic institutions on Staten Island. The Stirns took an active part in the community life of Staten Island. Louis Stirn was a member of the SI Chamber of Commerce, the Staten Island Civic League, and the Richmond County Country Club as well as the Manhattan Club.

Laura Stirn was a founder of the St. Cecilia Society of Staten Island (a women’s singing society) and was a member of the Staten Island Institute of Arts & Sciences, the Staten Island Bird Club, and the Garden Club of Staten Island. She was also an expert on Botany and horticulture, which would explain the home’s South facing, sun drenched Conservatory. With several arched, double paned French doors and floor to ceiling latticework walls, this is where Laura was known to cultivate and nurture her collection of rare, exotic plants.

Through the years the house has had several reincarnations: In the early 1960s, the Stirn family sold the house to the Gross family and circa 1968, the Gross family moved out and loaned the house to a yeshiva for two years before moving back. Then, in the late 1970s a group of entertainers, including Roberta Flack, rented the home for a time. Also,

for several years it was the official residence of the former President of Wagner College, Norman Smith, and his family.

In 2000, former owner Avery Gross created quit a stir when he applied to build two homes in front of the estate and three townhouses.. The New York City Landmark Preservation Commission declined to landmark the rear lot, but in 2001 they did designate the Stirn mansion a NYC Landmark building. Also in 2010 the Louis A. and Laura Stirn Mansion was listed on the New York State and National Register of Hisotric Places. These are significant accomplishments to ensure that the mansion maintains its original integrity in perpetuity.

Fast forward 100 years from when the Stirn House was originally built, and then began the mansion’s transformation journey from a private home to a public arts and cultural institution. That is, in 2008 the house was purchased and subsequently donated to the newly formed not-for-porfit, The Italian Cultural Foundation. At that time the ‘Stirn Mansion’ was also renamed Casa Belvedere meaning “house with a beautiful view”, as it is poised atop Grymes Hill, boasting spectacular views of New York City Harbor and The Verrazano Narrows Bridge.

The Italian Cultural Foundation’s mission is to preserve, promote and celebrate all things Italian. Individuals and families of all backgrounds who have an appreciation for arts, culture and cuisine are welcome.

From language classes to cooking classes; from art exhibits to photo displays; from film festivals to fig festivals; from Opera Night to Big Band Orchestra Night; from group plays to one man shows; from Festa D’Italia to Carnevale; from lectures to presentations; from fashion shows to car shows….it all happens at Casa Belvedere.

The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere is currently in its sixth year of a $5 million dollar capital campaign for the continued preservation and restoration of the 14,000 square foot Landmark Building. $3 million dollars has already been raised predominantly from New York City and New York State capital improvement and historic preservation dollars.

September ushers in a season of new fashion, loose and flowing hairstyles and sharp and vivid color everywhere. Those are the obvious changes but as the planetary energies begin to align for a new season, we are vibrationally aware of the power of Fall awakening.

This season, we are reminded of the benefits of “renewal” to our mind, bodies and spirits. As we begin with our routine and rituals, we are clearly conscious that beauty comes from inside out. Penetrating through the exterior of any issue requires us to recognize the benefit to its powers. For the balance of this year, we will be committed to choosing and finalizing the opportunities that have presented themselves with excitement and enthusiasm. Recognizing how those opportunities are in our best interest will depend on our exploration of the previous months. In these remaining months, we will make up for lost time, benefit from doing our homework and reevaluating our directions. Mercury (communication and reason) has provided insight into our personal environment and what’s needed to maintain our needs. We will be entering two more seasons clearly defining how we will “reap what we have sown” and a period of hibernation!

Hopefully, we will have remembered the importance of “saving for a rainy day”, literally and figuratively! After October 9, 2015, we need to have our plans for the balance of the year ready to put into action. Execution of those plans will make the difference of what opportunities will be in your best interest. As the year comes to a close, it is always in our best interest to make these next few months count as time becomes precious. This year has offered us a myriad of opportunities -- some great and some small.

Whatever they were and continue to be, we’re still required to chose wisely and assert the best understanding of what is best for us!
