RESIDENCE IN RAJAGIRIYA MADINAGODA
LOCATION Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka EXTENT OF LAND 22.6 perches BUILT AREA OF PROJECT 4600 sq. ft. PROJECT COST Rs. 26 Million
The site is located on Madinagoda Road in Rajagirya with an extent of 22.6 perches abutting a marsh. The house was designed for almost all spaces to interact with and get views of the marsh. The layout was designed around a traditional central courtyard with a series of contemporary spaces resonating around it. Entertainment and living spaces face the marsh and the services and office room on the ground floor take the road and side paths. Large sliding windows towards the marsh enable the central courtyard, living, dining and bedrooms to be as one with the garden and extended marsh beyond. The large fish pond in the courtyard is fed by an overflow raised pool of water whereby the sound could be heard through the whole house. On the first floor the central family lounge is almost meditative in nature overlooking the marsh on one side and the courtyard on the other. To the left are two bedrooms with a common bath in between and to the right the master bedroom suite. Walking through a large cupboard area one enters the bathroom in which the bath tub over looks the courtyard and to the other side is an open shower space from which views of the marsh cold be enjoyed. The roof terrace with bar and barbeque area along with a powder room and laundrette have breathtaking views of the marsh and beyond.

The plot is a 20 perch long narrow site in Thalawatugoda on a hill adjoining a rubber estate made room for a home comprising of a series of open spaces, long corridors and ponds being one with the garden. The internal spaces are well naturally lit and ventilated. By building along half the width of the length of the site gave rise to all the spaces overlooking a long garden and an overall L-shape footprint. On entering the main door one is taken along a long series of ponds with only grills separating the landscape, passing the central courtyard (also a large pond) with a tree, in the middle of which the water overflows into grooves in the passage into the long side ponds. The house was designed for entertainment and open style living whilst maintaining absolute privacy for the rest of the family. From the main entrance a side stairway takes one to the first floor living spaces. A large central family lounge gives access to two large bedrooms with attached toilets. The master bedroom overlooks the length of the garden and has an en-suite walk-in space and bath that opens to an outdoor shower. Half the area of the house has a roof terrace designed entirely for entertaining and has long lengths of cements seats which over look a large rubber estate on the side.
WORLD’S FIRST PLATINUM AWARD GREEN FACTORY “THE
LOCATION Seeduwa, Sri Lanka BUILT AREA OF PROJECT 130,000 sq. ft. (12,000 sq. mts.) PROJECT COST Rs. 300 Million DESCRIPTION OF SITE Brandix converted their 30 years old 130,000 Sq. ft. factory complex in Seeduwa, consisting of Three sewing plants into a green factory at a cost of USD 3 Millions whereby receiving Platinum Award under The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green building rating system of the US Green Building Council (USGBC)-the first apparel factory in the world to receive this highest award. Brandix through this refurbishment reduced the carbon emission by 80% and water consumption by 58% and an energy saving of 80%, and zero solid waste to landfills, eco-friendly indicators as yet unmatched by any re-designed green plant anywhere in the world, thus created a global benchmark for low energy consumption, water conservation, solid waste management and low carbon emissions.
The environments within the working areas were changed with the introduction of two indoor green courtyards providing all occupants with views. A rainwater harvesting system was installed along with a tertiary filtration system and a disinfection process which allows waste water to be recycled back for toilet flushing and gardening. State of the art equipment and material used in this project include a screw-type chiller unit which provides energy-efficient air-conditioning for the entire factory and special prismatic material which allows only the solar light to penetrate barring the accompanying heat and sophisticated new light emitting diodes as task lights to provide light at needle point supplementing the natural light provided by the skylights (Bay lights are used only on cloudy or rainy days). The relative humidity and carbon dioxide levels are controlled and maintained at comfort levels by an advanced intelligent building management system. Transportation within the premises is by electric car to eliminate use of fossil fuel inside the plant.
VILLA 14 - RUSKIN ISLAND FOR FIONA MENDIS LOCATION Ruskin Island, Moratuwa, Sri Lanka EXTENT OF LAND 80 perches BUILT AREA OF PROJECT 5000 sq. ft. PROJECT COST Rs. 55 Million DESCRIPTION OF SITE Located in the secluded Island called â€œRuskin Islandâ€? where there are very few and selected plots of land which shares a serene view of extended Bolgoda lake at the rear of the site. The island features a common amnesties facility which include a club house with a swimming pool, a bar and an entertainment area. The total cost of the project, including land is Rs. 55 Million. The island is approached via barge and there are two barges which connect the land with the island.
CONCEPT We wanted to create a series of gardens and buildings which finally end with the lush and peaceful view of the lake with the myriad of lotuses and water plants and birds. The material of choice was raw stone and concrete and glass. The front section of the compound was flanked with guest bedrooms and service building and courtyards. Thereafter, one enters into the main courtyard which separates the front from the main building. The living room and swimming pool are connected together. The main bedrooms are on the first floor.
PROPOSAL FOR SRI LANKA’S FIRST LEED PLATINUM RATED BANK FOR THE COMMERCIAL BANK OF CEYLON
LOCATION Trincomallee, East Coast EXTENT OF LAND 100 perches (2530 sq. mts.)
CONCEPT “Banking within a garden environment “ As the building plot is located in the very urban part of the town Trincomallee. We opted to design a very modern and futuristic facade without stepping into iconoclastic sentiments. The whole facade is an aluminium screen which helps to create a soft light conductive to the office and the bank environment. The surprise of interior is that once the customer walks in from the main lobby the experience is of trees and vertically stacked live garden. Customer waiting area is flanked by reflective, flowing water pools which are always provided with recycled water. Internal offices and their respective departments are stacked into their respective floors and each floor overlooks the five storey atrium which draws in light from the sky above. There is always greenery and fresh oxygen in the environment. This was very important for us as the climate in this region is hot and humid due to proximity of Indian ocean few hundred meters away. The building was also raised above the flood level and special precautions were taken to prevent the in-flow of water in case of a natural disaster. OTHER NOTES This building was designed in line with USGBC (United States Green Building Council) to acquire LEEDS CERTIFICATION for the level of LEEDS PLATINUM

CONCEPT CIC Paints now know as Akzo Nobel Paints (DULUX) is a leading international paint supplier and a major sponsor of the SLIA exhibitions over many years. For 3 consecutive years from 2010-2012 we designed their exhibition stalls for the annual SLIA Trade Exhibition. These futuristic designs always complemented the company's outlook and theme for the year as it had to accommodate their advertising campaign for the particular product ranges.

DESCRIPTION OF SITE Located in the prime area of Colombo Fort within the square of the Dutch Hospital premises, the rented space faces the Dutch Hospital on one end and the Chatham Street on the other as the main entrance. The land area is h1000 Sq. ft. The Chatham street has been opened up by the government of Sri Lanka after been closed up for many years due to terrorist war in the country. The shops and offices within this street are been renovated and been offered for lease to esteemed establishments and individuals. Chatham Street is also access to the Presidents official residence and the Central bank building. Chatham street node also graces the world’s only Lighthouse which houses a clock. CONCEPT The interior blends traditional values and modern conveniences. The idea was to create a ‘Library’ sort of atmosphere which contrasted with a busy street outside. We wanted to create a calm and relaxed atmosphere and the whole idea was a blend of traditional English culture and the robustness of Sri Lankan vernacular architecture.
PRIVATE RESIDENCE AT KOHUWALA

Complete and extensive refurbishment of an existing old house. Structure of the ground and the first floor were maintained and a new second floor penthouse with a roof garden were designed by introducing an independent new structure.

LOCATION Karangi Industrial estate, Karachi , Pakistan EXTENT OF LAND 7 acres BUILT AREA OF PROJECT 600,000 Sq. ft.
DESCRIPTION OF SITE Plot is a rectangular land on one of the most expensive plots dedicated for industries in Karachi. The main road is 120 feet wide with 3 aisles on either side and a secondary service access road 30 feet in width. There Is also a green planted zone between the service road and the entrance to the plot. The land is a mildly sloping land where the lowest part is at the front. The monsoon rains lasts approximately 2-3 days in Karachi. CONCEPT The design had to incorporate a jeans manufacturing facility from preparing the fabric, washing and to the finished material. The functions are divided based on the arrival of raw material and the final storage of the finished goods to be sent out abroad. The plan form addressed the easy flow of the work-line and also incorporated a mini golf course for the client who is a devoted player of the sport. LEED GOLD PLANT This is Pakistanâ€™s first LEED certified building and garment factory and once completed will receive the Gold certificate from USGBC .

DESCRIPTION OF SITE Plot is a rectilinear land on a slope where the lowest part is at the edge of the high level road. This part of the land where it faces the main high level road is also its narrowest point and an important junction at Nawinna. The node at the road connects 3 roads around an old bo-tree. The long elevation of the plot is facing the side access road of the premises. CONCEPT There are two levels of showroom and two levels of office space. The showroom spaces are rentable and parking is at an adjoining facility. The building creates open to sky platforms as it rises to each level and creates a recess so that the bulk of building is reduced. The showrooms are highlighted by use of a different form and the colours used.
MARISE DEKKERâ€™S HOUSE AT PEPILIYANA

CONCEPT The client chose a land which was located in a suburban part of Colombo, where most city dwellers have moved in due to congestion in the city. The pre-requisite for the house was that it should have a very clinical and Spartan feel to it. The design brief is in fact 3 houses stacked one on top of the other with identical configurations. The 3 families share the pool and roof terrace and the large family living area.
