Mythology

In The Laurel, the gods and the immortals interplay, and both will learn a valuable lesson about love and life, a lesson that will forever be told. Zeus, after bedding and impregnating the fair Titaness Leto, becomes father to twins: Apollo and Artemis. Unlike his other bastard children, Apollo and Artemis are made into gods, an event which will set the course for the rest of the story. Artemis has never forgotten the heartache that her mother suffered at the hands of her father Zeus, and as such, she wishes to lead a solitary life, away from men and love and relationships. Though she stands firm in her conviction, moments bubble up in her that are full of yearning. Apollo, who has never been seen without a smile on his face, is much more fanciful and wanting than Artemis. He wants love, and he wants it in a big way. Having loved and lost love, Apollo believes he has found it again with the beautiful nymph, Daphne. He quickly learns, however, that she has made a vow to celibacy. But that doesn’t matter to Apollo; his love for her is so profound that he asks her to be his companion, to live with him just so that he can be near her. Apollo’s lifelong wish is about to come true, but people on the fringes of his life have other plans. Those plans not only thwart what could be the love of a lifetime for Apollo, but it also will be the catalyst to which both gods and mortals will learn how much one should love, and how much one should consider the feelings of the one loved. Working in the areas of mental health, social services, human resources, and bail bonding has given her unique perspectives and insights into human behaviors, so she loves to write about the lies people live. She is currently working on her second novel.

Penny Miller is a born and bred Oklahoman. She has a nursing degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College and is a Registered Nurse in addition to being an author. Penny wrote her first short story complete with illustrations when she was seven-years-old and has been writing ideas and bits of dialogue ever since. As a child, her mother regularly read to her classic faery tales. It was those stories that ignited her imagination and attraction to the magical and whimsical. With her three children Robert, Amy and Cheyenne, she carried on the tradition of introducing them to fantasy and other worlds through stories. Three years ago, she co-authored erotic romance e-books under the pseudonym Jp Archer. At that time her daughters asked her when she was going to write stories they could read. Penny went to her keyboard and dug in and her debut solo novel, Colorblind, was born. Most importantly, creating a story in the Young Adult/Paranormal genre is where she found her true voice as a writer. She hopes readers will become fans of her heroine Harmony Phillips and follow her story through the next phases; Color Full and Colorless.

K.A. Masters is a fantasy writer who specializes in twisted fairy tales and zombie-infested historic fiction. She attributes her passion for Greco-Roman mythology and Germanic folklore to her alma mater, Dickinson College. Her novel The Morning Tree was released in Summer 2016.

Many times, I began writing with a clear goal in mind, but the characters swayed me in different directions. I’ve fallen in love with the ways they have developed and grown over the first two books and I look forward to discovering the surprises they have in store for me in the coming books.” Indie Gypsy will be reprinting her novel "Blood Lily" this winter.

First Frost is the first book in the Frost series written by Liz DeJesus. Bianca Frost smiles as she listens to her mother read ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ to the children during Storytelling Hour in the Princess Room of the Museum for Magical and Rare Artifacts. Her mother, Rose, reads to the children three times per week, each time with a new story, much to the delight of the children and their parents. It had been ten years since Bianca’s father had mysteriously disappeared without a trace and she often thought about him. On returning home one night, after feeling something was terribly wrong, Bianca walks into the middle of a battle of magic between her mother and another woman, who then tries to kill Bianca. Realizing that magic is actually real, Bianca now sees the museum’s magical artifacts in a whole new scary light and is further horrified to learn what had really happened to her father. With the clock now ticking, Rose needs to teach her daughter to become a magical warrior in order to prevent their blood line from being eliminated completely in a war which began many generations ago. Liz DeJesus has produced an incredibly imaginative novel which was not at all what I expected. I felt sorry for Bianca in so many ways, especially in that she lost her father when she was so young. I pictured First Frost being a book about a cooler climate, but was pleasantly surprised by the story within which was fast-paced and introduces a girl who’d had her whole family lineage hidden from her. Liz DeJesus has created two very strong female roles – Bianca Frost and her mother, Rose – both of whom are able to protect themselves from harm on a whole new level. Each of the well-known (and not so well-known) fairy tales were so cleverly introduced, taking me back to my childhood years, although the revelations in First Frost most definitely painted them in a whole new light. I very much enjoyed reading the first book in the Frost series and would recommend this book to anybody who loves mystery, drama, and humor dished up with a huge dollop of magic on the side. Glass Frost is the second book in the Frost Series by Liz DeJesus. Bianca Frost is next in line to run the Museum for Magical and Rare Artefacts, which has been run by her family for many generations. When Terrance, the grandson of Magnus (aka the Big Bad Wolf), arrives at the museum from Everafter with a message that the Queen needs her help, Bianca heeds the call. Her parents reluctantly allow Bianca to go, on the condition that her best friend, Ming, is with her at all times. On discovering that one of Cinderella’s glass slippers has been stolen, Bianca and her loyal friends set out to discover who the thief is and to stop them from stealing the other, which is housed at her family’s museum. If the two slippers are united, it will cause much devastation. The chase takes them through many fairy tale landmarks such as an enchanted forest full of fairies as well as the home of the seven dwarves, before leading them through the portal to Earth and back again to Everafter. Bianca suffers injury, loss, and great sorrow, but she is determined to do everything she can to protect those she loves in both worlds, while trying to prevent the two glass slippers from being reunited. Liz DeJesus tells the most enchanting of all magical tales, encompassing some of the greatest fairy tales and blending them with dark magic, mystery and twisted realities which Bianca never knew existed until just a few months earlier. The characters in Glass Frost are so much fun and bring back many happy childhood memories. Facing your fear of the unknown and pushing yourself that extra mile to save those you love, regardless of the dangers faced, is a strong message in this second title. I look forward to reading the third book in the Frost Series to see what happens next. I recommend Glass Frost to young and old, who enjoy the magic of fairy tales with a twist, blended with humor, adventure, suspense, real life social issues, loss and sacrifice.

Shattered Frost is the third book in the Frost Series by Liz DeJesus. With high school finally over, Bianca Frost and her best friend, Ming Lee, step through the portal to Everafter to attend the Winter Ball. During the ball, Bianca receives many threatening stares from Count Bleu, a descendant of the notorious murderer, Captain Bluebeard. That evening, Bianca and Ming are beaten unconscious and kidnapped by the count. Both women regain consciousness in Count Bleu’s basement. The many ghosts of Captain Bluebeard’s wives appear and start chanting, hoping to save Bianca and Ming. As a large hole appears in the floor, their kidnapper enters the basement, forcing the girls to jump into the hole, transporting them to Wonderland. A whole new adventure unfolds while Bianca and Ming try to find their way home. They find themselves captured once again after the Queen of Hearts imprisons them, determined that they are executed as soon as possible. With Terrance and Prince Ferdinand furiously seeking the women that own their hearts to bring them home, the men eventually find an alternate route into Wonderland, but are running against the clock in a land where people seem to know not only who the newcomers are, but where their fates lie. Liz DeJesus has written another timeless classic, which takes place inside both of Alice in Wonderland’s fairy tales – down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass. With all of these wonderful characters being magically linked in some way, the impossible always seems to make sense. Terrance’s secret surfaces create hope for all who are facing death in a land which is famous for sending people mad; if only Bianca and Ming would stop disappearing! The added story lines, which are not in the original fairy tales, are a clever delight in this fast-paced, action packed adventure which becomes more and more mysterious with each page. I thoroughly enjoyed Bianca and Ming’s new friends and the love and determination shown by Terrance and Prince Ferdinand, who will do anything to save them. I recommend Shattered Frost to ages 12 and over who enjoy romance, paranormal, action, adventure, drama, along with their favorite fairy tales on steroids.

The first words I read in Blood Relatives by Patti L. Adams were on the dedication page. It said: “To all my enemies…you know who you are. And so do I.” I knew right then that this book would be good. The story follows the life of a very intelligent little girl named Anna Fay Kelly from the ages of five to eleven. At the age of five, Anna witnesses her mother kill her father. When her mother is not convicted, Anna is stuck living with her abusive mother and her beloved elderly aunt. Just when Anna thinks things could not get any worse, her mother marries a man that is just as evil as she is. Blood Relatives is not a light read. This is a good story and it is meant for the reader to take their time reading it so they can fully understand what Anna is going through. I liked that Adams started the story off in a courtroom. This added to the seriousness of the story and was the beginning of Anna’s traumatic childhood. This is where the reader meets Anna and learns that she is not your normal 5-year-old little girl. I also liked that Adams explained Anna’s way of thinking. A child sees things and understands them differently from an adult. I absolutely hated the character of Anna’s mother, Flo. I hate it even more that she reminds me of some mothers I have met. The ending of the story was a surprise for me, but I thought it was perfect. The things that Anna endured in those six years were truly heartbreaking. This book may be fiction but the actual story has happened to many people. If you like to read drama then I highly recommend this book. An awesome story!

Color Blind by Penny Miller is the story of Harmony Phillips. Born color blind into a world where color tells what your "magik" abilities are and what race you are, she is an outcast. High school and love are tough for any teenager, but add in that you are the outcast because of something you can't help and life just gets even harder. With her best friend, Tesch, and her loving parents, Sarah and Charlie, by her side, Harmony begins to conquer everything life throws at her when she starts to see color. Her dreams are coming true, she is seeing color and gaining "magik" abilities, but what price must she pay? Will Harmony be in control of her destiny or has Gaia given her one she can't fathom? Color Blind by Penny Miller is an amazing and one of a kind book. Penny Miller perfectly captures what it's like to be an outcast teen in today's world while throwing in the paranormal world and making it all believable. The characters in Color Blind are realistic, even if they are shape shifters and other creatures of lore. The descriptions of the colors and changes that Harmony goes through as she gains color vision and powers put you right there with her, even making you feel as if you were Harmony. I have never read a book so unique, realistic, and believable and I sincerely hope that there is more to Harmony's story. Five stars isn't enough for Color Blind by Penny Miller; it needs about ten! Color Blind is difficult to put down and I don't think anybody would regret reading this amazing book.

In Immediate Dead by Blue Cole, Sandy Cooper, a rookie female homicide detective for the Atlanta PD, has plenty of obstacles to overcome without adding the quirks of her new partner to the list. Dubbed The Reaper by the other detectives in his precinct, Michael Bennett has an aloof demeanor and a strange working style that his cohorts either find intimidating or annoying. Thrown together as partners, they quickly discover their working styles complement each other perfectly, but it doesn't take long for things to get bumpy as they attempt to stop a revenge killer focused on medical personnel. Intrigued by her partner's strange behavior at murder scenes and his uncanny 90% clearance rate on cases, Sandy puts together pieces of a puzzle that lead her to an astonishing secret that could mean the end of Michael's career. When I read a thriller, I want the book to really intrigue me from the very start, and Immediate Dead by Blue Cole did exactly that. I was captivated from beginning to end. The story reveals one critical detail at the very beginning, but the author really makes the reader keep flipping those pages for all the other important reveals. I enjoyed the dynamics between the two main characters, particularly Sandy's "under reaction" to Michael's big secret, and I would definitely love to learn much more about the enigmatic Fred (Michael's friend) in future books. I need the answer to what Sandy "experienced" near the end, so I will definitely be looking for the next book in the series.

Other reviews/Blurbs Adults Fall Asleep; Kids Take Over Reviewer: Forrest W. Schultz - Southside Reviews There have been many stories in which chaotic conditions ensue after the sudden death or vanishing of large numbers of people. But I do not recall ever reading (or hearing of) a story like Blue Cole's recently published novel in which suddenly all adults go into a coma, and the children are left to fend for themselves. Cole presents interesting, exciting, and realistic portrayals of the childrens' struggle to survive, and their struggle to discover the meaning of the comas of their parents. The intensity of the latter struggle increases dramati- cally when they learn that each one of them will also become a "Sleeper" after becoming eighteen years old! I recommend putting this book on your good-read/must-read list! Blue Cole is the latest addition to the ever growing ranks of Coweta County's writers who have had books published in the twenty-first century. And Cole pays tribute to today's Coweta County by setting his story there. He is the second Coweta author to do so, the first being Tamala Callaway with her Super Natural series. Ghosts Help Ghost Whisperer! Reviewer: Forrest W. Schultz - Southside Reviews In the famous television series, the Ghost Whisperer helps the ghosts. The reverse situation occurs in Blue Cole's latest novel, where the ghost whisperer Michael Bennett is a homicide detective who, as soon as he arrives at the crime scene, talks to the ghost of the victim in order to get information to help him identify the murderer. He needs to do so quickly because the ghost only stays there for a short time, which is what is referred to in the book's title. In this story Bennett faces an especially tough challenge in attempting to identify the serial killer who is murdering Atlanta's doctors, while at the same time trying to deal with "baggage" from his past, and in attempting to get along with his new partner, a sharp attractive young woman named Sandy Cooper. The story is a good read just as a crime novel, and it is especially interesting because of the ghost whisperer feature. It is a worthy successor to his debut novel, Sleeping Sickness, published in 2014. Cole, who lives in Coweta County and belongs to the Coweta Writers Group, has joined in the book writing/publishing boom which is sweeping across the Southside and producing some of our nation's best new writers. Combating A Strange Malevolence Reviewer: Forrest W. Schultz - Southside Reviews Blue Cole's Evil Upriver is comparable in certain respects to Stephen King's It. In both stories a town is being attacked by an unknown nearby underground malevolence which has been there a very long time, but only attacks periodically. Evil Upriver, though, is unlike It in that the team of townspeople which forms to combat this evil consists of adults, not kids, as in It. Joining this team in Cole's story is Adam, a songwriter on a road trip who arrived in the town a few days ago. And, finally, there is another new arrival in this town -- Ricochet -whose complex mystery I will allow you, the reader, to discover for yourself: it is not only mysterious in itself but also with respect to the question as to why Cole included it in his story. This story, like his first two, is a good read created by a writer with a great imagination -- I recommend it as I did the first two.
