A water system includes:

Intake structure, water pipelines, storage reservoirs and pumps.

Reasons of Water Leakages: Pressure in mains, water hammers, soil instability, corrosion of water pipes, poor quality of fittings, traffic loading, age of components.

Non Revenue Water (NRW): Water that has been produced and is “lost” before it reaches the legitimate customer. A global loss of $18 billion in a year is estimated. NRW varies from 30 to 50%. Water Leakages Contributes 50% of NRW.

NRW includes: Physical/ Real losses through leakages. Apparent losses through theft or metering inaccuracies.

NRW results in: Detrimental to the financial viability of water utilities. Detrimental to the quality of the water itself. Presentation By- NK Gupta: April 09, 2013

Water Leakages: It is a Physical/ Real loss of water from water system. It amounts around 25% of total potable water produced. Takes place from transmission and distribution networks.

Transmission and Distribution networks may be: Old, Poorly maintained, Generally of poor quality.

Water crisis is: Gap between water availability and demand. More problematic in urban areas due to higher population density & per capita consumption. Water stress condition especially prevailing in Metro cities of India.

Water supply in Metro cities: Depend upon surface water sources. Where it fail to meet the rising demand, ground water reserves being taped, often to unsustainable level. Becomes very problematic during summer/ dry season. Objectives of this paper are: To discuss the problem of NRW and water leakages. To discuss the present scenario of water crisis. To show how a helpline model can put a solution to this water crisis.

Work done in this paper: Discussion on prevailing water stress/ water crisis scenario. Suitable references have been incorporated on the subject. A Model of Helpline service for water leakages has been proposed in this paper. A pilot survey in Jaipur city was conducted to get the feedback on the proposed model. Results of the pilot survey is also analyzed in this paper. Results of the survey and discussion shows: One of the ways to reduce the NRW is to control the water leakage problems. To tackle the problems of water leakage we need efficient Plumbing services Helpline for water leakages as named “CALL US @555 has been proposed as solution to water leakage problems. 88% of the sample population remark the proposed concept as excellent or very good and 82% are willing to use the service. If this service starts then 88% population is willing to pay accordingly.
