Thanks & Congrats… Math Works Honors Zampa Provenzale, Miles Fulmer, Mary Doherty, Julia Allwein, and Amelia Koontz are being recognized at the CCS Superintendant’s Honors and Recognition Ceremony on Feb. 8 th for their performance in the Math Works for Kids competition. Congratulations! Life Lessons Winner Congratulations to Gyasi Hall, a top ten winner in the Eastmoor Academy Life Lessons Essay Contest. Gyasi will be honored along with the other winners at an awards ceremony at Eastmoor February 7th.

From The Principal’s Desk… Dear FamiliesDuring the month of February, you will be invited to Student-Led Conferences. Student-led conferences are an important part of the informal program at Indianola K-8. These conferences are intended to empower students and teach them to articulate their learning across all content areas. They are childcentered conversations where students demonstrate how they are learning to self-evaluate. Student-led conferences give you an opportunity to experience school through the eyes of your child. This is a time for goal setting with your family and creating a plan for continued success. Teachers facilitate the preparation for these conferences and support the student-led process. If you would like a private conference, please schedule that conversation with your child’s teacher apart from the student-led conference. We look forward to seeing you at school this month. Many families look forward to the student-led conference each February as a highlight of the year! Thank you for your continued support of your child and the entire Indianola K-8 program. Mrs. Moser

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Safety In the morning, students should be dropped off on the Tibet Road side of the building between 8:459:00. Cars dropping off students need to be driving west on Tibet Road so that students may exit on the passenger side. Please do not drive around cars dropping off children. If you must drive east on Tibet Road, do not allow students to get out and cross in the middle of the street. Students may only cross at the marked crosswalks located at Druid Street and Tibet Road, Tibet Road and Calumet Street and Calumet Street and Weber Road. Please do not park in the drop off lane on Tibet Road to bring students inside. Parking is available in the lot across the street from the school on Weber Road. Please be very careful crossing Weber Road and cross only at the marked crosswalk. Do not allow children to cross in front of the school without adult supervision. Cass Freeland, Indianola K-8 parent, is volunteering as our liaison with the city to increase safety at the Weber Road crosswalk. Please contact Cass at cassfreeland@yahoo.com if you witness a safety issue at the crosswalk. Cass is logging concerns and reporting regularly to the city traffic department. We are working with the city to increase safety signage on Weber Road in front of the school. The city has just announced a new safety initiative to enforce speeding in school zones. We have asked to participate in the expansion of their pilot program. In the afternoon, parents are invited to pick up students in the building at 3:30 p.m. Student


safety patrols are available to help students and parents cross the streets at Weber Road and Calumet Street and Tibet Road and Calumet Street between 3:30-3:40 p.m. Again, please be very careful when crossing at the crosswalk in front of the building during this time as we have heavy traffic on Weber Road in addition to the school bus pick-up area. I appreciate your continued support as we work together to ensure the safety of our school community. School Attendance If your child is absent, please notify Denise Holland, our attendance secretary. Call 365-5579 the day of the absence and then send in an excuse note when your child returns to school. Classroom News & Happenings… Student-Led Conferences Conferences will be held Thursday, Feb. 10th and Tuesday Feb. 15th from 4-7:30 pm. Please note that individual teachers may elect to hold conferences on alternate dates. Contact your child’s teacher to schedule your conference. Children’s Theatre Our K-3 students were treated to a performance of “Young Amelia Earhart” by Columbus Children’s Theatre in our auditorium on Feb. 3rd. After the performance students were able to ask questions of the actors. This wonderful learning experience was made possible by BMW Group Financial Services in Hilliard. What a great opportunity for our kids to

see theater live & up close!

Middle School News… 2nd Annual Indianola Talent Show February 17th is the 2nd Annual Indianola Talent Show! Tickets are on sale now in Room 109 for both the 2pm and 7pm performances. Afternoon tickets are $3.00/each and evening tickets are $5.00/each. The number of acts has doubled from last year's show and is packed with the talent of students, their families and Indy staff! Buy your ticket before we sell out and come join the fun! Columbus State Read-In The 6th graders will be attending the Columbus State Read-In on Feb. 7th and 15 students will be reading their "I Am From" poems that are being written as part of their current unit study on genetics, cells, and multi-cellular organisms. Watch the hallway on the first floor, as conferences approach, for their multi-genre poster projects "From Cell to You!" for the creative sharing of their research on a body system of their choice and the cells, tissues, organs, function and personal connections for choosing that system. Sports, Fitness and Wellness… Wellness Initiative meeting rescheduled The new date for the Wellness Initiative meeting is Feb. 8th. We will meet in the Indianola K-8 library from 6:30-8:00 pm. Immunizations Meeting Representatives from the Columbus Public Health will be on hand to discuss parents’ views on the safety of vaccines Feb. 23 from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Indianola K-8 library. The goal of the session is to discover common ground that can positively influence interaction with parents in their clinic.

Invention Convention This year’s Invention Convention will take place Weds. Feb. 23rd from 9:15 ‘til about noon on the 2 nd floor (where grade 4 classrooms are located). Volunteers are still needed to judge students’ inventions. This is a fun way to get involved in our creative community! Please contact Mim Halterman if you are willing and able to help.

Due to classroom parties on the afternoon of Feb. 14th, our next meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 28th at 9:15 in the Parent Room. We will discuss your classroom/grade level event plans and check in with the PTO Board about getting volunteers for next year.

Each seminar, for students in grades 8-11 & their parents/guardians, will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Indianola Art Gallery Artwork is currently being accepted for the Indianola Art Gallery. Guidelines for submission:

Students wishing to participate in PSEOP are required to attend a Dual Enrollment Seminar with a parent/guardian before applying for admission. A letter of intent to participate in PSEOP must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to a school counselor before March 31, 2011. The form will be available at each seminar.

Feb. 9 at 1:00 - Indy PTO Movie Day is back!! The PTO will be sponsoring the 2 nd annual movie day, showing "Despicable Me" @ Studio 35 at 1:00. Admission will be $4.50 for adults and $1.50 for children. Tickets will be sold at the door and the concession stand will be open for your refreshment needs. This event is not a fundraiser, but a nice way to have the Indianola Community and other Columbus City Schools families get together on a day off from school. The cost covers the licensing fees for the film and other expenses @ Studio 35. Last year we had a great turnout, and hope to see everyone there.
