Manager's Message By Brian Darlak September 22nd marks the Fall Equinox, officially beginning the Fall season. The Club will once again embrace the seasonal change and transition with the leaves on the trees. Along with the beautiful fall colors, the club also welcomes Sharon Williams and Ed Carlisle to the leadership team of the Club. Sharon started earlier in September as the Food & Beverage Director and Ed will begin October 12th, receiving the torch as Head Golf Professional from Mike Mayer. Mike's retirement will be official at the end of October.

Many thanks to Gil Zimmerman, Ken Kopocis, Seale George, Estelle Locklear, Pete Stephens, Charlie Sherupski and Mike Petty for participating on the panel.

Ed is coming to us from Old Toccoa Farm Club in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Previously, Ed worked at The Ranch Country Club in Westminster, Colorado; Shadow Valley Country Club in Rogers, Arkansas; Gainesville Country Club in Gainesville, Florida; and Tchefuncta Country Club in Covington, Louisiana. I look forward to the future of the golf Sharon Williams comes to us from Aramark where program! she held various positions within the company, from lead operations person for new contracts for I do want to say Thank You to you, the ICYCC over a half-dozen new contracts to her recent Membership for your continued support of your position as Inventory Auditor for York County Club, especially over the recent weeks where Schools. Her background includes prior club Food & Beverage operations were altered due to experience at Williamsburg Country Club where Employee Close Contacts with COVID Positive she served as Catering Director. Ed Carlisle will join the Golf Operations Department as our Head Golf Professional on October 12th. While this is right around the corner, the process kicked off in June when Mike announced his retirement.

The PGA of America was engaged along with a group of members who participated on an interview panel. Over 20 resumes were received in consideration for the position, making the selection process extremely difficult.

Getting Out Our Gloves

By Megan Stephens As the season changes, I always try and make it a point to look back and reflect on where we are, how we’re doing and where we’re going. After all, wasn’t it Maya Angelou who said “You can't really know where you are going until you know where you have been.” As I thought about the amount of change our club and Stephen & Dianne Thomas society as a whole has endured throughout the past year and a

half, I’m amazed and proud at how well everyone has responded and adapted. In closing, I have touched on where we’ve been, where we are and now an exciting look at where we are going. Whether you joined recently or have been with the club family for years, this coming season will be a focus on giving thanks for each other and the ability to having a place to engage and grow our connections within our club community. You are likely to see pop up ways to show our appreciation, holiday events, calls or emails with special invitations, the return of new member mixers, more unique ways to safely be social and plan to not only sustain but continue to prosper in 2022.

In thinking about where we are – I want to talk a moment about being on the club campus. In my reflection time, I couldn’t help but see a distinct correlation to our ICYCC club family and my own family. Growing up, when my grandmother was coming to town, we prepared differently than a normal day. In our house, a visit by this matriarch called for “the white glove test” - a checklist of perfection in honor of such a special person. Our work at the Club is much like that special visit– we want to be ready to provide the best experience possible when our club family comes home. This mindset will always be the goal and despite having to be flexible due to ‘family’ health and obstacles, we are continuing to work hard to do as much as we can to prepare for you.

Commodore's Corner

by Bob Wayland, Commodore Where has the Sumer gone? The airwaves are filled with talk of the change of seasons.

Fortunately, some of the best weather of the year lies before us. We are packing Mystique for the Past Commodores’ Cruise to Cambridge as I write this. Like our Shakedown and OBX cruises, this one will be well attended and will include some first-time participants and new members.

On October 13, we will be having our Annual Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. We will have a short business meeting and elect the 2022 Bridge. The nominating Committee has recruited a slate of great candidates that is sure to make next year amazing: • COMMODORE: George Fentress • VICE COMMODORE:Brian Clarke •REAR COMMODORE: Randy Graham •FLEET CAPTAIN: Bob Young •PORT CAPTAIN: Skip Cousins •SAILING MASTER: Jim Lamb •SECRETARY: Kathryn Wainscott •TREASURER: Paul Bland As I am poised to step into the role of Past Commodore, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the 2021 Bridge, which, working with many volunteers and enthusiastic members, realized the goal of Fun in ’21! This great team is comprised of George Fentress, Vice Commodore; Brian Clarke, Rear Commodore; Randy Graham, Fleet Captain; Dan Hoyt, Sailing Master; John Upshur, Port Captain; Paul Harris, Treasurer; Nancy Frank, Secretary; and Tony Ennis, Immediate Past Commodore. We have received outstanding support from Brian Darlak and his team of Indian Creek staff. I thank them for the imagination and dedication they showed in making sure we could be safe at the Club while having fun.

Cruisers Caught on Camera

Cruise in Review

Indian Creek Yacht Club past Commodores organized and participated in a cruise to Cambridge and Solomons Island from September 13-18. For the first time in memory all current members of the ICYC Bridge participated in some aspect of the cruise. Current Commodore Bob Wayland congratulated past commodore Steve Bedford, who took the lead in organizing the trip. The team of past commodores who worked with Bedford to put together what Wayland called an “amazing cruise” were Len Engstrom, Jean Light, Joe Sarnowski, and Dan Hoyt. Past Commodores Tony Ennis and John Coyle also attended, representing more than a decade of Indian Creek leadership. Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club President Al Ross, who participated, said “the efforts of volunteers, like these past Commodores, are what makes Indian Creek such a special place.” Bedford recognized the important role played by the spouses of the Commodores. “Jeannie Coyle, Lynne Engstrom, Debby Hoyt, Tom Light, and Joe Sarnowski’s special friend Polly Cox, did much of the work in organizing this cruise,” he said. “Spouses play a key role throughout the service of a husband or wife on the Yacht Club Bridge,” according to Wayland. The Yacht Club will hold a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Annual Meeting on October 13.

Turf Talk

by Pete Stephens, CGCS The heat and humidity have hit the road and cooler evenings and some dryer conditions have arrived. The Bermudagrass growth on the tees fairways and roughs is slowing down due to the days get shorter and temperatures declining. This makes for a more manageable clipping cleanup and a cleaner more enjoyable golf course.

The bunker maintenance is improving, and I would like to welcome Donovan and Marcel (pictured on right). Both are maintaining the bunkers and will be adjusting the sand depths, as needed.

The weather pattern for August was brutal, in addition to the high humidity and afternoon rain showers. The average daytime temps were in the 90’s creating greens condition that were soft, slow, and thin.

That said, they are in good shape for this time of year with only minor blemishes. The greens have also healed from the stresses of summer along with the Cicada Killers. These insects seem to prefer areas with open ground and low vegetation like the greens low height of cut and sand base for easy burrowing. They are crucial predators in the ecosystem by helping keep the cicada population down. These insects need to be controlled when they start to destroy the greens playing conditions. Here is a picture of a repaired area of a green that was damaged from the sand and burrow hole left from a cicada. This will take some time to heal.

If you look closely at this picture, you will see little quarter inch holes.

This process is called venting, which removes the top quarter to one inch of organic matter, which is part of what causes soft wet greens.

The staff vented and topdressed the greens twice in September. Now that the greens are nearing the end of environmental and cultural stresses from summer and nighttime temperatures are cooler, this process gives the turf a chance to regenerate after removal of the organic material and will create a healthy putting surface. The greens aerification scheduled for November will take place as scheduled.

In the beginning of September, Virginia Tech held their annual Turf field days in Blacksburg. It was a great educational event for learning new turf information and networking opportunities that enables us to continue striving for the best possible playing conditions and aesthetics for ICYCC. The ICYCC Turf team is currently prepping the course and grounds for the upcoming major tournaments. We thank you for the opportunity to continually strive for the best playing and aesthetic conditions possible for ICYCC. Online Tee Times

Golf tee times have now been accessible to you through both our website and the new Indian Creek App for a year now. The membership is using the new services very well, but some common questions raised are:

It looks Full “It looks like everything is full today. I can’t make a tee time.”No tee times are available for online or App booking on the current day. Your ability to book a time the next day ends at 5:00 pm. You must then call the Pro Shop to book a tee time after 5:00 pm or on the current day.

This way we can adequately prepare for anticipated business levels. It also allows us the opportunity to encourage you to come play when we may be able to start your group on the back nine or somewhere else on the course, if possible.

Number of Players

Please indicate how many players will be on the reservation. Most of you are booking for a foursome with only one name holding the time.

More often than not, less than four players actually come for that foursome reserved.

9 or 18?

Please indicate whether you will be playing nine or eighteen holes and fill in all of the players in your group. Having this information speeds up the check-in process. Your charges for the round are directly linked to how you fill in your tee time information.

Do I Check In?

All golfers are still required to sign-in on the clipboard on the counter. This is your chance to make sure that the tee times were reserved correctly, because the accuracy of those tee times determines how you will be charged for your golf.

Sadie Hawkins Scramble September 7 This year’s event featured a two-person scramble format. Congratulations to Helen Carson and Gil Zimmerman who won the fun event with a score of 61. Second place with a score of 62 went to the team of Susan Fox and Steve Edmonds. Finishing third at 65 was the team of Kay Stout and Hank George who won a playoff against Lynn Georgiadis and Michael Rhodes who finished in fourth.

2021 Senior Club Championship Three age divisions, Senior Division (55+), Super Senior (70+), and Super Super (80+), of men competed over 36 holes of stroke play competition over two days, August 21 and 22.The course played exceptionally well with the challenges of typical August heat. Winners in the Senior Championships are as follows:

Senior Division: Rich Brahm fired a 36-hole total of 152 to capture the Senior Division of the Club Championship with a seven-stroke margin of victory over Kevin Crawford.

Super Senior Division: Bob Gillispie won the Super Senior championship after winning the Senior Division five years in a row. Bob shot a pair of 71’s for a 142 gross score to win by 20 over Gil Zimmerman who finished as the low net winner.

Super Super Division: Jack Blunt captured the Super Super Division for his third straight year.

This is for players over 80 years of age by firing a 157. Jack shot under his age both days but does that most every round. Low net honors went to Ken Sparks at 149.

2021 Johnson Loving Foundation Golf Tournament:

The Johnson Loving Foundation contributes annually to a college bound high school senior from either the Lancaster or Northumberland County golf teams. It is our intent to award two scholarships this year.

Fifty-six members came out to support the foundation by playing in a scramble tournament. $3,070 was raised for scholarships.

The winning women’s team with a score of 54.9 pictured from left to right is Linda Atkinson, Chris Kopocis, Jane Unangst and Robin Hatfield.

The winning men’s team also with a net score of 54.9 was the team of Ed Roccella, Mac Conway, Bob Gillispie and Art Rausch.

Men’s 2021 Handicap Match Play Tournament This event started in April and runs through the summer allowing three weeks for singles matches to be played.

Congratulations to Monte Todd who, as a 2 handicap, was able to give strokes to all of his opponents and still emerge as our 2021 Handicap Tournament Winner.

Racquet News

by George Christoforatos Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club survives and enjoys the US Open George Christoforatos organized a trip to the US Open September 2nd and 3rd. The group drove to New York in their own vehicles and was prepared to see some great tennis. This takes you on the rollercoaster ride we went on!

Hurricane Ida was an issue, but we decided to take that risk, hoping the storm had slowed down, and the weather would be cooler than normal, during the US Open. Hurricane Ida hit New York, with a lot of rain in a short period of time. Hurricane Ida didn’t stop any of the members driving to the Open. Wednesday Sept 1st, all the members arrived in New York at the hotel safely. No major issues.

The evening of Sept 1st the group left the hotel to celebrate Chuck Maddux Birthday. Chuck turned 70 and doesn’t look a day over 50. After a few drinks and some great food, the group left the restaurant and walked across the street in a pouring rain, singing and dancing. What a great time! The next day we woke up early to go see some great tennis at the US Open! That’s when we got the bad news that the basement of the hotel where three of the cars were parked was flooded! Wow! Three of the cars parked in the garage were now totaled!

That’s when we all looked at each other and said let’s go see some great tennis. ICYCC members are resilient and want to enjoy life! What a great place to work!

The group took off on foot walking to the US Open, it was only a 2-mile walk. Meanwhile, during the walk, we saw many basements being drained out, many garages being drained out, cars on the streets that were moved out of their parking spots by water. The walk was a wake-up call, on how much water had fallen in New York.

The weather on Thursday Sept 2nd was great! It was 70 degrees, no humidity. We get to the US Open, and Craig Oshanessy, who is one of the professional coaches, contacts me and informs me, he is there

The group agrees, lets go see Craig and his player work out. While watching the workout, a few other players are drilling with their coaches, getting ready to battle.

The Gates open to the US Open, and off we go! We are now in another world! Covid is still an issue, everyone must show their Covid card, showing they have had their shots! Some people are wearing masks, some aren’t, but its mandatory to wear your masks, when you enter a restaurant or retail store.

Matches are getting ready to start and the group decides to go to Author Ash Stadium first to see the feature match, our seats are high, but the view is great! When you enter the US Open you must get a program with the schedule of matches for the day!

That becomes your racing sheet, meaning you mark the matches you want to see during the day. The group breaks out from the first match and off we go, to numerous courts.

US Open 2021, the matches are unbelievably tight, most of the matches are going to a final set tiebreaker. The talent level has risen, and there is not much difference between the players. These matches are decided by conditioning and mental toughness.

We are watching tennis at the highest level, played at the highest level, and extremely tight scores! Wow, great tennis and great time for our members.

430pm Thursday, Sept 2nd, we get a call from the Hotel, we have to move our gear out of the Hotel and evacuate the Hotel. That was the most frustrating moment for me, but we all got in an Uber who overcharged us (Supply and Demand, I will never forget that statement!) for a ride back to the

Hotel. We go back and remove out luggage and move to another Hotel! After checking in, we go to a nice restaurant and enjoy dinner while talking tennis and get ready for the next day.

The trip to the US Open had many hurdles, but this group of ICYCC members were amazing. Howard and Sandy Aderholt, Chuck and Betsy Maddux, Mark and Linda Fothe, George and Brenda Christoforatos, Mary Wimbish and her son, all endured this Sept 3rd, we all wake up and are ready to roll to experience and never looked back, just enjoyed the the Open. We get there before 11am, when the US Open and each other’s company. I can honestly gates open and off we go! Every match we watch is say, I had a great time, and never laughed so hard! very tight, this year, the players are so even. We What a wonderful group, and, more than that, what a watch all day matches, and stay for the evening great place to work - Indian Creek Yacht and matches, and soaked up as much tennis as we Country Club! could. What a great day!

We now have an issue for the travel back to Kilmarnock, all rental cars in New York are out, most everyone has rented a car for the weekend, or Cat! Cat is what the rental car and Insurance agency is using as a term for Catastrophe! Chuck Maddux somehow, gets a rental car. We have two vehicles for the ride home, everyone piles in and we are homeward bound.

GARDEN BUZZ

Passion Flower Vine: Many of you have asked about the tropical looking vine growing on the green fence on the turn onto hole 12.

It is actually a native vine with beautiful purple flowers and interesting egg shaped seed pods. The vine was used by American Indians for healing wounds, ear aches, insomnia and stress. It blooms all summer on new growth and can be used as a potted plant as well. Sometimes unruly but always a show stopper this is a great vine for sunny protected places in your yard and a host for fritillary butterflies.

Many of you are starting to look at your gardens and yards with an eye for cleaning up all the leaves and dead debris from the summer. Please be aware that many insects, butterflies, and native bees use the fallen leaves, and hollow stems of grasses and lilies as winter nests. If you must clean up please try to leave some out of the way areas as they are to protect these unseen visitors to your property.
