Letter from the Chair The big news for the department this spring has been the ALA’s Committee on Accreditation (COA) External Review Panel’s (ERP) early March visit as part of ILS’s American Library Association reaccreditation of our MLS and MIS degrees and the subsequent reaccreditation of our department. The ERP was welcomed at the beginning of their visit with a gala in the lobby of Luddy Hall, attended by many alumni, students, employers and other supporters of ILS, as well as Dean Raj Acharya, Executive Associate Dean Esfandiar Haghverdi, and Senior Executive Associate Dean Erik Stolterman. Thanks to the hard work of the staff team of Katie Novak, Michelle Dunbar-Sims, and Corey Tarbell and their student workers, and the faculty team, led by Howard Rosenbaum, Carol Choksy, and myself, along with all the other fulltime and adjunct faculty, friends, alumni (especially former SLIS dean and ILS chair Debora “Ralf” Shaw), and the work of the school’s staff and administrators, we made a great impression upon the visiting team. Our self-study totaled over 300 pages. Because of all these efforts, ILS has been reaccredited for another seven years.

Other than that, things percolate along in ILS, due to the work of the above people and our great students. Among the work of our wonderful full-time faculty: Assistant Professor and Doctoral Program Director Rob Montoya took a return trip to Kosovo as part of his State Department commitment to assist the building of LIS education programs and libraries there. MIS Program Director Noriko Hara and Graduate Program Director Howard Rosenbaum are opening up new MIS tracks in the SICE data science program. Xiaozhong Liu returned from Alibaba corporation in January, and he continues with his research using their massive database. Allen Riddell and Carol Choksy won IU teaching awards. John Walsh won a New Frontiers scholarship to continue his work on a digital scholarly edition of the 19th century poet Algernon Charles Swinburne’s works, while continuing his work as director of the school’s Hathi Trust Research Center. Kahyun Choi co-hosted a one-day workshop called Midwest Music and Audio day

on June 27 with other SICE faculty members and other attendees from many different universities. Susan Herring took up, again, the position of Research Associate in the Psychology Department at the University of California at Santa Cruz this summer. And Devan Donaldson recently received notice that he had been given a $330,408 Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program award for the project “Bridging the Gap between Scientists, Institutional Repositories and Data Management Practices.” These are only some of the highlights. These and other full time, visiting, and adjunct faculty in ILS have been publishing articles, getting grants, and attending conferences and seminars throughout the year, increasing the profile of our unit and increasing opportunities for our students.

Sadly, we have to announce several people leaving ILS. Adjunct instructor Christina Jones will be leaving us for a library position in IU’s Business/SPEA Information Commons. Assistant Professor Marika Cifor has decided to take a position at the University of Washington, returning her to the West Coast. And Corey Tarbell, our Director of Graduate Student Services, has left for a new job at IU University Information Technology Services. Corey has been central to our operations over the years. We are very grateful to these people for their work and we give them our best wishes in their new positions.

This coming year, we will work to better address issues raised by the COA reaccreditation team: more thoroughly addressing learning outcome assessments, minority recruitment, obtaining feedback from employers, and better supervision of adjunct-taught classes within the context of the curriculum as a whole. We will be asking our alumni, adjunct, and employer communities for help with these issues, and we appreciate all your support.

Re-Accreditation: Behind the Scenes

The Department of Information and Library Science is proud to accounce the re-accreditation of its Master of Information Science and Master of Library Science degree programs by the American Library Association.

Why is accreditation so important?

For any prospective and current students, the American Library Association gives this answer, “Graduating from an ALA-accredited program provides greater flexibility in the types of libraries and jobs you can apply for and enhances your career mobility. Most employers require an ALA-accredited master’s for most professional level positions, and some states require an ALA-accredited degree to work as a professional librarian in public or school libraries."1 LP Ailes, Associate Director of SICE Career Services, who has worked with ILS students for the past three years on career search and job placement, said that in his experience, students do need the accredited degree to move beyond just an entry level position and progress professionally. He also added that qualifications for positions in the information and library field depend a good deal on the particular interests of each student, and most of the thirty-five or so on average jobs that are posted for librarians in the SICE Career Services database do require an ALA accredited degree.

Upon surveying last year, our alumni agreed on the importance of having an accredited degree. 41% mentioned either the reputation of the department and/or its accreditation as one of the reasons they chose to attend ILS. In addition, the top major strengths of ILS programs selected were “highly competent instructors & faculty,” and "highly ranked and accredited [programs]."2 The Department has continually received accreditation since 1951.3 Of course, back then there was no MLS or MIS degree; ILS was a division in the School of Education that, jointly with the University Graduate School, conferred a Master of Arts in Library Science, initiated two years prior.

Nevertheless, it is quite an achievement: sixty-eight years in a row of delivering and maintaining quality programs throughout the various changes in the unit’s structure, name, and location. That quality is measured by the American Library Association’s Committee on

Accreditation through the standards they maintain, standards that must be proven by ILS every seven years in a comprehensive review process to maintain its accredited status, in addition to the other more regular reports: a biennial narrative report and yearly statistics for ALA, and a larger yearly statistical report for the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE).4 What exactly did ILS have to do to be re-accredited?

When I was first hired in the summer of 2016 as the Department's Project Coordinator, accreditation was the major project on the not-too-distant horizon. It was early spring 2017 that we held our first meeting; myself along with former Chair Pnina Fichman, current Chair Ron Day, and former SLIS Dean and Chair Debora “Ralf� Shaw, acting as an advisor, discussed what was needed based on the last re-accreditation in 2012. The first item on the agenda was preparing for the self-study, the narrative report that would need to address the five standards: systematic planning, curriculum, faculty, students, and administration, finances, and resources. But before the faculty could commence with writing, all the various pieces of evidence and data needed to be collected. Looking at ALA's list of recommended supporting materials, I knew that the task was beyond my own ability. I advocated for the hire of MLS student Alica Stephens as a Data Processing Assistant. We spent the whole academic year 2017-18 gathering and organizing all the necessary components. Stephens went above and beyond in her duties, keeping me on track with the massive scale of the project and also cre-

ating many of the tables, graphs, and other visualizations to assist in analyzing the data. At one point, our Box folder reached 2000 documents, evidence, links, and supplementary information.

I celebrated reaching that achievement by blowing up enough yellow balloons to fill her office.

Fa c u l t y began using all the data to write the self-study narrative throughout 2017-2018, with the majority of the writing being done by Day, Howard Rosenbaum, ILS Director of Graduate Programs, and Carol Choksy, ILS Senior Lecturer, in the summer and fall of 2018.

In the midst of making revisions, staff and faculty also began preparing for the second part of the review process: a visit by an External Review Panel (ERP), made up of faculty members from peer library & information programs. After they reviewed the self-study, they would visit the Department and meet with representatives from the Department, School, and University including students, staff, faculty, and administrators, as well as external constituents such as alumni and employers, who were invited to give their input on the programs.

Re-Accreditation: Behind the Scenes “After all was said and done, around 13 different committees and groups met with the ERP during their three day visit; approximately 100 people were contacted for in-person interviews,” said Novak. And, of course, there was a party: the opening reception, held on March 2nd, to celebrate and welcome the ERP. The members of the ERP were Athena Salaba, Chair, Associate Professor in the School of Information at Kent State University; Laura Saunders, Associate Professor in the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College; Gregory S. Hunter, Professor in the Palmer School of Library and Information Science at Long Island University – C.W. Post Campus; Joe Mocnik, Dean of Libraries at North Dakota State University; and Win Shih, Director of Integrated Library Systems at University of Southern California Libraries.

Rosenbaum, Day, and Choksy finished the self-study in January of 2019, sending the printed version with thumb drives to the ERP on the 22nd. The final document was 286 pages containing 32 figures and 59 tables, with an additional 55 documents in the appendices that were only accessible electronically. Less than two weeks after their visit, the ERP sent a report to ALA’s Committee on Accreditation based on their observations, interviews, and review of the evidence and self-study. ILS received a copy of this report, which highlighted strengths of the programs as well as areas that need improvement. The Department then got some time to respond to any factual errors and to prepare for the final step of the process, an interview with the Committee on Accreditation during ALA’s Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., in June 2019.

What was the result? And what happens next?

On June 23, 2019, ILS was notified that the MIS and MLS programs received the status of continued accreditation; a successful result to the efforts of all those involved! ALA has asked to make the final pdf of the self-study available on their website as a sample to other schools undergoing reaccreditation. The Executive Summary to the Self-Study is available for all to read on the ILS website5. and staff accessible and helpful. Students expressed a high level of satisfaction with staff and administration. It appears that the merger and new administrative structure did not adversely affect students in the program as they have shared positive experience and are optimistic about the value of their diploma and employability.” Ron Day, ILS Chair, had this to say about after the site visit, “The ERP team was greatly impressed by the present and the future of this department moving forward.

Both the quality of their education and the treatment of the students makes us unique and who we are.” When asked how he felt now that the process was over, Director of Graduate Programs Howard Rosenbaum responded, “This was my fourth accreditation review…and I’m glad that it will be my last." For the rest of the faculty and staff, those seven years will likely pass swiftly, especially as ILS begins to address what both the ERP and ALA’s Committee on Accreditation identified as needing improvement: minority recruitment to expand the diversity of the program, incorporating and involving adjunct lecturers more in the internal workings of the department, comprehensive and formalized assessments of student learning outcomes, and increased feedback processes from internal and external constituents, particularly employers, on the five standards.

ILS had already begun working on these areas prior to the review. Thanks to the help of IU’s Center for Evaluation & Education Policy staff, Colleen Chestnut and Patty Muller, ILS completed student learning outcome assessments for each of the core courses in the MLS and MIS programs in Fall 2017. Faculty in these courses selected assignments that proved mastery of a learning objective in the course, and then calculated the number of students that had a B or higher in that assignment6. Part of what ILS will now work to do is to standardize that process in order to have continual feedback on student learning outcomes. Day has already begun conversations with faculty and staff on the other identified areas of improvement. And so continuesthe valuable work of providing quality graduate programs for students in information and library science.

David Kaser Endowed Lecture Series The Department of Information & Library Science David Kaser Endowed Lecture, supported by donor funds, brings a speaker to campus each year to present on a topic relevant to information & library science.

The lecture is named in honor of Dr. David Kaser, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Library and Information Science who taught at IU from 1973 until 1991 and remained an active member of the library and information science community until his death in 2017.

The 2019 Kaser Lecture hosted Dr. Paul Edwards, the William J. Perry Fellow in International Security at Stanford University and Professor Emeritus of Information and History at the University of Michigan.

During his visit, Dr. Edwards participated in the “Politics of Algorithms” Roundtable with ILS Chair and Professor Ron Day, Filippo Menczer, Professor of Computer Science and Informatics, and Nathan Ensmenger, Informatics Chair and Associate Professor, where they discussed how algorithms work to influence social media and politics.

Dr. Edwards presented his lecture, “Truth Under Siege: Making Climate Knowledge in an Age of Transparency, Skepticism, and Science Denial” on January 25th, 2019. During his lecture, Dr. Edwards examined the history of environmental data systems in the context of the current US administration and detailed how tracking and understanding environmental change requires scientific memory or ‘long data.’ Afterward, a reception was held in honor of Dr. Edwards.

Kilgo, Assistant Professor in the Media School at Indiana University for her lecture on “The Headline U Give: Black Lives Matter, The Media and Unconscious Digital Communities.” Her speech focused on public attitudes about black racial injustice and activism. She discussed digital news media and social media audiences’ contribution to the racial divide and the marginalization of Black Lives Matter in traditional news and digital media.

In particular, she discussed the intersectional tensions inherent in the notion of an LGBTQ community archive that was founded during the heyday of gay liberation.

4.5.19 Hoyt Long: Hoyt Long, Associate Professor of Japanese Literature at the University of Chicago, presented his lecture on “Reading for Bias: Computational Semantics and the Character of Racial Discourse.” His lecture focused on machine learning tasked with consequential real-world decision and the concerns raised about the kinds of social biases that are reinforced and perpetuated. Dr. Long discussed what readings might yield if using word embeddings to explore the semantics of racial discourse in a large corpus of Japanese periodicals and fiction written during the rise and fall of the Japanese empire.

4.29.19 Nico Franz: For the final ILS Colloquium lecture, Dr. Nico Franz, Associate Professor in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University presented “Discover, monitor, publish, disagree, align: Advancing the social design of biodiversity data science.” Dr. Franz focused on shifting value systems embedded in biodiversity data aggregation paradigms toward new designs that provide more freedom and power for individual systematic experts or enthusuats to advance their interests and careers.

2018-19 External Scholarship Awardees Thanks to our generous alumni and donors, the following students were supported in their studies at ILS: Ashley R. Dainas received the Clayton A. Shepherd Information Science and Technology Scholarship, which was established in memory of Associate Professor Shepherd who had been a member of the ILS faculty for 13 years. Dainas is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in Information Science at Indiana University Bloomington. She works as Assistant to the Director of the Center for Computer-Mediated Communication at Indiana University. Her research focuses on how graphical means of communication, or “graphicons,” are used in computer-mediated communication in social media such as Facebook.

Currently, she is completing a survey study of how people understand the pragmatic functions of emoji in their discourse context. She has published a conference paper and is presently working on a book chapter and a journal article based on this study. More generally, she has presented her research on graphicons at conferences in the UK and Switzerland, as well as Hawaii and New York. Her other research interests include internet memes and trolling in social media. In her spare time, Ashley is an avid knitter.

Laura Guebert received the Information & Library Science Student Support Fund and the Evelyn Ray Sickels Award, which is awarded to a student with exceptional potential in the field of youth services librarianship. Evelyn Ray Sickels was one of the editors of the Anthology of Children’s Literature (in its 5th edition in 1981). She was for many years the head librarian at the Indianapolis Public Library.

Guebert is a new graduate student at Indiana University working on earning her dual degree in History and Library Science. She previously graduated from Murray State University in May of 2018 with an Honors Diploma in History as the Outstanding Senior Woman. Since coming to IU, she has worked as a course assistant for Dr. Pergher’s "Inside Nazi Germany" course and as a page at the Lilly Library. Both positions have been very rewarding and sealed her desire to continue working on both of her degrees. With an interest in both modern German history and children’s literature and outreach, Guebert hopes to pursue a career at the St. Louis Public Library, where she will be able to combine her passions to better serve the people of St. Louis.

Kristen Hamilton received the Debora Shaw Diversity Scholarship. Debora “Ralf” Shaw, Professor Emerita, School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering and the former Dean of the IU's School of Library and Information Science (now ILS), earned her Ph.D. at IU in Information Science in 1983 and a Master of Arts in Library Science from the University of Michigan in 1974. Shaw generosuly donated funds to support students from underrepresented backgrounds. Hamilton also received the H. W. Wilson Foundation Scholarship, the Kathryn Elizabeth Wiser Scholarship, and the Fry Family Scholarship, which was established by the five sons of Bernard and June Fry to honor their parents. Dr. Bernard Fry was appointed Dean of the IU Graduate Library School (ILS), 1967-1980. Hamilton was born and raised in New Jersey. During her undergraduate years, she attended Rutgers University on the New Brunswick campus, majoring in History. After graduating in 2015, she got her MA in History on Rutger’s Newark campus. It was

then that she realized her love for research, which led her to applying to Indiana University’s Library Science program.

She hopes to one day work in an academic setting. At IU, she has already had the opportunity to learn from great professors and make what she hopes will be lifelong friendships.

Chloe Hovind received the May Copeland Fellowship, which was founded by IU alumna Phinetta Jane Habegger who studied library science at IU and worked in the library profession. She established the fellowship in honor of her mother, May Copeland. Hovind is currently a Master’s student in Library Science with a specialization in music at Indiana University. She grew up around Seattle, where she fell in love with mountains and lakes, and graduated with a Music History degree at Western Washington University. She is an avid student and musician and dreams to become a music librarian and work with special collections. Her fondness for early music and rare materials extends to her extracurricular activities; she plays in a recorder consort that performs Medieval and Renaissance music. One day, she hopes to travel abroad and experience some of Europe’s finest libraries and early music manuscript collections.

Chase McCoy received the Gerald Bernbom Fellowship for the Study of Knowledge Management, the Rob Kling Social Informatics Fellowship, and the SLIS Doctoral Scholarship, which was established by Blanche Woolls in 2010. Woolls is an 1962 graduate of the IU MLS program and earned her PhD in Library Science at IU in 1973. McCoy is a Ph.D. candidate in Information Science. He received his M.L.S. at Indiana University Bloomington and his Bachelor’s from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in English and Rhetoric. His research takes a social informatics approach to study the datafication occurring within institutions of higher education. In an article soon to be published in the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, he addresses how decision makers in higher education use institutional data to shape their decision-making practices. In his other publications, he has taken a documentation theory approach to propose a critical perspective on learning analytics practices, as well as addressing the data literacy capability and data use practice of faculty engaging in learning analytics initiatives.

Selena McCracken received the Charles B. Shaw Fellowship, established in honor of Charles B. Shaw, who compiled the List of Books for College Libraries (the “Shaw List”) and its supplements in the 1930s. Beginning in 1943, he was the President of ACRL (the Association of College and Research Libraries). An ardent amateur printer, he founded the Off-hand Press at his home in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. McCracken is from Huntingburg, Indiana, where she helped organized poetry slams in the library before graduating from high school. She went on to obtain a dual-degree in Literature and Writing from Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, IN. While there, she was also President of the English Club, Assistant to the Diversity Department Coordinator, and had an internship with a librarian who brought her to tour IU’s Library program. She still counts the day she was accepted to SICE as the best day of her life. She began her studies with a youth services specialization but has quickly been gaining archiving and digital libraries experience at the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology and the American Indian Studies Research Institute and project management and student activities experience at SICE. She is confident that she will bring best practices with her wherever she goes thanks to SICE training and support from the Charles B. Shaw scholarship.

Katie Morrison received the Data Curation/Preservation of Electronic Resources Scholarship, and the Cynthia Duncan Memorial Fellowship, established in honor Cynthia Duncan, who got her Ph.D. in Information Science in 1974. Morrison also received the Mabel & Harold Packwood Graduate Scholarship, which was established by former ILS staff member Sarah P. Burton in memory of her parents. Morrison is a

second year master’s student in the Library Science program of the Department of Information and Library Science. She graduated with a master’s degree in art history from University of Colorado in 2014. She has previously worked as a visiting professor in art history and at a regional arts nonprofit organization. Morrison now works at intersections of archival practice, museums, classification research, and critical theory. She is a graduate assistant archivist at the Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive and University Archive. She also works with Dr. Robert Montoya in the Comparative Classification Lab at IU. Mallory Nygard received the Dennis K. Grumling Memorial Award Fund, which is awarded to an ILS student who has excelled in cataloging and demonstrates promise of success in the profession. Dennis Grumling was a 1984 MLS graduate from IU and was the head of Cataloging at De Paul University.

Nygard grew up in western North Dakota and earned her B.A. in English from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in 2016.

Throughout her time at Indiana University, Nygard worked as an RPS Libraries Supervisor, Research Assistant in the IUB Libraries Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, and Intern at Bloomington High School North. After graduating in May with her Master’s of Library Science, she will be moving this fall to Knoxville, TN to be the Director of Library and Information Services at Saint John Neumann Catholic School.

Kaitlyn Owens received the Margaret Griffin Coffin Scholarship.

Margaret Griffin Coffin was an Assistant Professor Emeritus of Library and Information Science in 1988 when she established this fund for students.

Owens is a first-year student in the Master of Information Science program. Prior to her MIS degree, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Science in Higher Education and Student Affairs, both from Indiana University.

Her work experience has focused on assisting international students throughout their academic journey in the US, ranging from admissions to post-graduation outcomes. She currently works full-time as a career advisor and also has a part-time position in the Scholars’ Commons providing reference to patrons.

In her spare time, she is a true crime aficionado, avid crafter, podcast enthusiast, and a big fan of dogs. As a first-generation college student with family roots in Appalachia, Kaitlyn is drawn to work where she can provide public service, outreach, and information literacy training to diverse populations. After graduation, she hopes to use her burgeoning technical toolkit to tackle information science challenges in the public or private sector.

Dan Qaurooni received the Rob Kling Social Informatics Fellowship, which is awarded to doctoral students in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering who are pursuing research in Social Informatics and are interested in conducting critical studies on the impact and consequences of computerization, the Internet, or digital media on individuals, organizations, or society. Qaurooni is a dual doctoral candidate in Informatics and Cognitive Science.

He is interested in the computerization efforts under way in Controlled-Environment Agriculture (CEA), a suite of technologies and practices that are deepening the automation of agriculture by replacing soil with nutrient solutions, the sun with LEDs, open climates with computer-regulated microclimates, and skilled

farmhands with data-driven architectures. In his dissertation, Qaurooni uses ethnographic methods to explore this process of automation. He focuses in particular on how computerization influences the flow of information, the distribution of control, and the meanings of nature in agriculture.

Alica Stephens received the H. W. Wilson Foundation Scholarship, the Margaret Griffin Coffin Scholarship, and the Keith C. Kuhn Tri-State Scholarship, which was established in honor of Keith C. Kuhn, who was a 1976 MLS graduate and served as President of the ILS Alumni Board for several years. He was the Head of Public Services in the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH. Stephens also received the BJ Kish Irvine Graduate Scholarship in Art Librarianship, which is awarded to students in Fine Arts Librarianship who demonstrate potential to be leaders in the field. This award was established by B.J. Kish Irvine to mark her years of dedication and service as a faculty member and Fine Arts Librarian at IU. Stephens is currently in the second year of her master’s in library science degree from Indiana University, specializing in music librarianship. Previously, she received both a bachelor’s and master’s in music performance at Lawrence University and Wichita State University respectively. During her master’s in Wichita, Stephens also held the position of second oboist with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.

At IU, she works at the music library both in public services, and as a student cataloger. She especially enjoys her roles in IU student groups, and serves as the President of the Society for Art Librarianship Student and as Vice President of the Student Music Librarianship Group.

Corey Tarbell, our beloved Director of Graduate Student Services, accepted another position at IU. He has worked for ILS for the past five years, infusing excellence in all areas of the department and particularly in student services. He started out as an admissions processor, then moved up to Assistant Director of Student Services, and since 2016 has been Director. Acting in both his official capacity in addition to taking on responsibilities when needed, Corey has led the department through many changes in its staff and faculty, in moving from Wells to Luddy, and as ILS gained greater connectivity in SICE. His exceptional capabilities in supporting students through advising, facilitating communication and the problem-solving of many an issue, serving as a great source of knowledge on all things IU/SICE/ILS (in addition to pretty much everything else), fixing staplers and button machines, navigating the world of Higher Ed politics, organizing scholarships and courses, and providing vital data for all our reporting and re-accreditation has been so very much appreciated and will be so very much missed! - Katie Novak, ILS Department Administrator

Student Group Activities Special Libraries Association - Student Group The Special Libraries Association Student Group (SLA-SG) went on a field trip to Indianapolis this semester. They visited the Rolls-Royce Library, which was graciously opened to them and other Indiana SLA members by Gabriele Hysong, the Head (and only full-time) Librarian.

Group members were able to interact with the “Engine Parts Petting Zoo� and see how a global, corporate library functions in a technical setting. SLA-SG also explored the beautiful Indiana State Library building, where they received a complete tour of both public and private special collections from Chris Marshall, the Digital Collections Coordinator.

Additionally, SLA-SG hosted a Game/Craft Night earlier in the semester and partnered with the Student Art Librarianship Student Group to provide a Visual Arts Copyright Workshop presented

by Naz Pantaloni on April 16th.

St. Germain completed her dual MIS/MLS at Indiana University in 2013, and is currently a 4th year doctoral student in Information Science. Her research centers on museum and cultural heritage information,with a specific focus on archaeological collections documentation and management. She hopes to contribute a deeper understanding of these collections as informa-

tion resources: the development and status of curation and collections work in archaeological repositories as well as issues of preservation and access to collections information. Related research areas include 3D modeling in cultural heritage, digital preservation, and scholarly communication. She currently works as the collections manager for the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology at Indiana University.

Kimberly Cook Cook helped facilitate a digital paleontology workshop for K-12 educators and avocational paleontologists at the IU Paleontology Collection. During the workshop, they discussed how teachers can use fossil specimens to fulfill standard education requirements. Additionally, they explored physical and digital resources such as 3D printed fossils as well as biodiversity data websites like iDigBio and the Digital Atlas of Ancient Life. The workshop was made possible as part of an NSF-funded grant received by the IU Paleontology Collection to digitize the Ordovician fossils.

Kahyun Choi Choi co-hosted a one-day workshop called “Midwest Music and Audio Day” (MMAD) on June 27 in Luddy Hall with other SICE faculty members, including Christopher Raphael, Donald Williamson, and Minje Kim. MMAD is a biannual workshop where Midwest researchers and industry folks interested in audio and music get together to present, discuss, listen, and have the usual cross-pollination that results from meetings.

About 40 researchers attended from various institutions such as Northwestern University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Rochester, Rutgers University, Swarthmore College, and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute. Representatives from all SICE departments participated in addition to IU Libraries, IU Cognitive Science Department, IU Speech and Hearing Sciences, and the IU Jacobs School of Music.

Fifteen speakers talked about their exciting projects with diverse topics ranging from IU library’s audiovisual metadata platform, AI for automatic music generation and signal enhancement, human-computer collaborative music/audio understanding, and new virtual instrument designs. During the workshop, Choi gave a talk about her recent trend analysis on the level of difficulty of popular song lyrics.

Malachai Darling Darling will work as an archival intern with the Marine Corps History Division in their archives branch over this summer.

Samantha Hyde Hyde received two funding awards to support her internship in Zambia. She also received the IU OVPIA Global Enhancement grant and the Larry Singell Internship Scholarship from the Walter Center for Career Achievement.

Benjamin Ollen Ollen co-delivered a presentation titled: “Aligning Program Offerings with Labor Market Needs: Using Emsi to Identify Opportunities and Challenges” at the Indiana Association for Institutional Research’s annual conference. He was also awarded a student scholarship to attend the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians 2019 Annual Conference.

Rhea Chhokar from Kelley Business School presented a poster on collective intelligence in global trolling; Sydney Pleak from SPEA presented a poster on cultural diversity in global trolling.

Fichman's most recent publication, co-authored with alumna Elizabeth Peters ('73 MLS), was published in volume 13 of the International Journal of Communication. The paper “The impact of territorial community norms and composition on online trolling” focuses on the effect of anonymity on the one hand and geolocation on the other regarding the extent of trolling as observed on Yik Yak.

Xiao (Camilla) Tan received the Yuan Tung-Li Memorial Fund, which was established as a memorial to the late Yuan T’ung -Li, Director of the National Library of Beijing, who was associated with the Library of Congress for much of his later life. Tan was born in Szechuan, China (home of the panda), and has a Bachelor of Management in International Business degree from Dalhousie University in Canada, Nova Scotia. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Information Science at IU. Her passion for information science was developed from a social media communication internship at In-

tel Corp; after taking courses in MIS, she found her interest in user-centered design and data analysis. Her wish is to combine both interest areas in a future workplace and also would like to work on data projects geared toward product safety and social minority issues. Tan will soon start her first work experience at IU as a specialized language serials assistant at Acquisitions Department of Well’s library, where she is excited to apply what she has learned from data management to this new role.

In her spare time, she loves solving puzzles, playing the flute, thinking creatively, and trying different recipes in her kitchen.

Internship Spotlight: Ashwed Patil Ashwed Patil (MIS) interned as a Data Analytics and Communications Consultant with Keshif LLC, a startup in Washington D.C. that specializes in providing data analytics and visualization solutions in international affairs, public policy, economic and social development and non-profit sectors.

Patil was tasked with developing a use case for the company’s CSO-SI project. The CSO-SI is an index developed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in 1997 to inform the role of civil society organization (non-profits, youth groups, faith-based organizations) around the world and assess their strength, viability and impact. The score is calculated across seven dimensions – legal environment, financial viability, organizational capacity, service provision, sectoral infrastructure, advocacy and public image. The index is currently produced by a non-profit called FHI 360 while Keshif turns the end results into a beautiful webbased dashboard for target audiences to explore insights.

Another of Patil’s projects was to improve the Freedom House Press Index visualization dashboard, which involves a full range of activities including data collection, data cleaning, manipulation and visualization in JavaScript. The dashboard includes features like a choropleth map of freedom statuses, rankings views, time series charts, rate of instability charts and filters related to regions and electoral democracy status.

At the end of his internship, Patil got his dream project: writing a use case for UNICEF South Sudan, one of Keshif's clients. Keshif is providing advisory support for UNICEF South Sudan's humanitarian monitoring and evaluation study. AJ Wheeler received the Charles A. and Charles H. Davis Fellowship in Scientific Information, which was established in honor of Charles A. Davis, who headed the Indiana State Police Headquarters Laboratory and later that agency’s Criminal Investigation Division and was a pioneer in forensic science.

Charles H. Davis has three degrees from I.U., and studied postgraduate chemistry at the University of Munich on a German government fellowship. He was an editor at Chemical Abstracts; served as an academic dean in Canada and in Illinois; and is currently a Senior Fellow in Library and Information Science at IU.

1970s Anne Beversdorf (‘74 MLS) Beversdorf has been a professional Vedic and Western astrologer since 1993, publishing her highly praised book Vedic Secrets to Happiness in 2013, and becoming a Board Member and Founding Librarian for the Alexandria Astrological Catalog [alexandriaibase.org/ home]. This is the world’s first cataloguing and detailed subject listing of astrological works in libraries around the world and is a relatively new project. At present over 6,000 books are subject listed and another 10,000 are in the catalog and awaiting additional detail work.

2018 also brought her a Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis’ Who’s Who. She continues to be a professional astrologer and lives in Austin, Texas with her small doggy.

Carole Medal (‘79 MLS) Medal is completing her 15th year as Executive Director of Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, IL. As the largest library district in Illinois for population served, they have experienced much growth over these years including expanding services with 2 new branches and a recently launched bookmobile service to cover their 65 sq. miles. Last year they became the first public library in the country to open a credit union in the Main Library which has brought in many new customers seeking library services as well as a hands-on approach to financial literacy. They con-

tinue to host world class exhibits which attracts visitors from many states. In 2009, they received the National Medal for Museum and Library Services. In 2013, Medal was honored to be selected by the Illinois Library Association as Librarian of the Year. In 2016, she received the Millikin University Alumni Merit-Loyalty Award.

Meg Scharf (‘76 MLS) Scharf will retire from her position as the Associate Director for Communication, Assessment, and Public Relations at the University of Central Florida Libraries on May 31, 2019. She joined the UCF Libraries in 1984.

1980s James Gates (‘83 MLS) Gates will be presenting a lecture at the Library of Congress on July 5. The lecture is titled “Cardboard Culture: The Origins of the Great American Baseball Card” and will discuss the origins of trading cards including baseball cards and the growth of their popularity.

Michael Romary (‘83 MLS) Romary’s most recent publications include two poems, “now and wigner” in The Laurel Review (forthcoming) and “Ars Poetica” which was published in summer

He was also acknowledged for the research he provided to Steve Luxenberg, senior editor at The Washington Post for his work, “Separate: The Story of Plessy v. Ferguson, and America’s Journey from Slavery to Segregation.” He attended the Breadloaf Writers’ Conference in Vermont in 2016, 2017, and 2018. He and his spouse Catherine Albrecht ('84 Ph.D,), who is now retired from Ohio Northern University where she was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, live in Ada, Ohio and Grand Marais, Michigan. Romary retired from UMBC in 2007 and had also worked at The Ohio State University, Mansfield, and one year at Indiana University Bloomington.

Lorelle Swader (‘86 MLS) Swader is a 2019 recipient of the ALA’s Equality Award. The award is given to an individual or group for outstanding contributions toward promoting equality in the library profession. Swader has demonstrated a commitment to diversity and inclusion with a focus on the rights of underrepresented library workers, exemplifying the spirit of promoting equality in the library profession. Swader is the associate executive director of the ALA Allied Professional Association and the ALA Offices and Member Relations (AOMR). Throughout her professional career, Swader worked with numerous ALA committees and taskforces focusing on diversity and inclusion, including Spectrum Scholarship and Emerging Leadership. As a leader, Swader has organized the annual National Library Workers’ Day initiative highlighting library workers’ contributions to library operations, with the slogan, “Libraries Work Because We Do.”

Rebecca Olson (‘99 MLS) In June 2018, Olson completed her certification to be a School Media Specialist for the State of Connecticut via Southern Connecticut State University. In August 2018, she relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she is the Business and Social Science Informationist with the Department of Research Data Services at the University of Cincinnati Libraries. She had previously been a Reference Librarian at the University of Connecticut’s School of Law.

MLA Director of IU Archives, educates health information professpoke at the SICE Gradusionals, supports health information ate Graduation Ceremony research, promotes access to the world’s health sciences information, and works to ensure that the best health information is available to all.

Karen Evans (‘97 MLS) Evans was named as subject editor of the Criminal Justice section for Resources for College Libraries (RCL).

RCL subject editors oversee the ongoing development of the discipline with responsibilities including selecting new title additions; adding in web resources; updating, reviewing, and weeding current selections (approximately 1,500 titles); maintaining and refining the subject taxonomy; and integrating advancements in disciplinary research, teaching, and scholarship.

Andrea Morrison (‘91 MLS) The Jenkins Award Committee announced that Andrea Morrison, Head of Monographic Text Cataloging at IUB, has been awarded the 2019 William Evans Jenkins Librarian Award. The Jenkins Award is presented in recognition of truly outstanding contributions to the Indiana University Libraries or to the library profession. Morrison has excelled in many areas, including cataloging, government documents, and authority control.

John Marshall is in the process of being acquired by the University of Illinois at Chicago and will become UIC John Marshall Law School effective in August 2019.

Brad Warren (‘99 MLS) Warren recently took a position as the Associate Dean of Library Services at the University of Cincinnati in August 2018. He was previously the Director of Access Services at the Yale University Library.

2000s Mandy Havert (‘07 MLS) Havert was promoted from Assistant to Associate Librarian rank at the Hesburgh Libraries, University of Notre Dame, May 2019.

Gabriele Hysong (‘06 MLS) At the annual Special Libraries Association (SLA) conference in June, Hysong will be accepting the George Mandel Award presented by the Aerospace Section of SLA. The George Mandel Memorial Award was established in 1989 by the Aerospace Section of the Engineering Division in memory of George Mandel, who passed away on July 16, 1989. George Mandel was a member of the aerospace industry library community for 30 years. At the time of his death in 1989, he was the Chief of the Technical Information Services Division at the NASA Lewis Research Center. This award was established to preserve the goals of the Aerospace Section and to keep alive George’s belief that participating in professional organizations is important for an individual’s growth and development. Hysong served as the 2016 Aerospace Chair, presented a peer-reviewed poster at SLA 2018, served on speaker panels at SLA over the years, and resuscitated the Rolls-Royce library that was to be closed into a viable knowledge services center that is now considered a core part of the company’s business.

Casey Mullin (‘08 MLS) The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) has selected Casey Mullin, Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services at Western Washington University, as the recipient of the 2019 Esther J. Piercy Award. Casey Mullin’s career demonstrates sustained contributions and leadership in the field of library technical services. In recognition for his work on developing metadata standards and vocabularies, he was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Policy Committee at the Library of Congress (LC). He has held many positions in the Music Library Association (MLA) including Chair of the Vocabularies Subcommittee and Chair of the RDA Music Implementation Task Force. He has served on the Executive Board of the Music OCLC Users Group since 2011 and chaired the ALCTS Cataloging and Metadata Management Section Working Group on Full Implementation of LC Faceted Vocabularies.

Adam Oster (‘09 MLS) Oster recently became the Community Engagement Librarian for the Library of Michigan.
