Dear Fellow Members, I hope you are all enjoying the Sunny period of the year. I belong to an era when we had no electricity and as a result, we had no air conditioning. But still life was great. With the Mercury soaring at 50 degrees, one did not require heaters to make water hot. And that naturally heated water was made cool with a few drops of 4711 Ice eau de cologne leading us to enjoy the luxury of bathing in cold water. For Summer, Club management had planned several activities for children. This year, there was so much pressure on Summer camps that many children had to go disappointed as they could not get seats. The situation is being addressed and next year we shall have more number of camps in each category. While we thank parents for encouraging their wards to take advantage of activities provided by the Club, I would wish that the Club management is informed well in advance about the children intending to avail of summer camps enabling the management to make adequate arrangements. We are working out ways and means so that Finishing School type workshops are held in the Club for all age groups throughout the year. If you have any ideas of activities likely to involve youth, please let Club Management know. We shall be only too happy to look into it and try to make it happen. Obesity among children is a common curse in this part of the world. The result is that per capita diabetes is the highest. This is indeed a dangerous sign for our future generations. India Club provides excellent facilities of training in Sports. We have an excellent Gym as well. It has been upgraded recently at a phenomenal cost. Please encourage and involve your children in physical and sports activities. This is very very important. For a healthy nation, we need to have children with a healthy body. This is what Mahatma Gandhi had once said. Help us to fight obesity, particularly in the younger generation. Let the Golden Jubilee Year of India Club be devoted to anti-obesity activities.

Anup Jalota Nite The soothing evening went smooth way that was the evening with Anup jalota at Indian Club . It is not very often we get such opportunities to listen to ghazal live from maestro who are legends in their own field, my self being a ghazal writer(my book UMANGEIN is full of ghazals). I wait for such occasions and enjoy these evenings with immense pleasure. Anup Jalota himself was in a lighter mood and he himself was enjoying the evening as well. It only makes the artist better when he starts enjoying himself then he gives audience his best. The summer had already begun and I thought it would be difficult to sit outside but apparently the silk voice of

Birthday Celebrations

I would like to express my sincere thanks to you for allowing us to arrange the birthday celebrations of my grand children. We are all delighted to experience your extremely comfortable ambience including the exceptionally yummy food and hospitality. The children also enjoyed throughout the party at the bowling alley and the indoor cricket and game areas. The European guests also conveyed their appreciation on the event management, your services and expressed their interest to visit again.

Anup Jalota made the weather also mild and even the winds wanted to enjoy themselves dancing over the ghazals.

The mature voice of maestro with melodious music created by him gave entirely different meaning to the words of ghazals and we all were spellbound with this magic. I am already waiting for the next magical show. Congratulations to the organizers for arranging such a cool evening.

Cookout with Master Chef The Ladies coffee evening was funfilled and entertaining. I used to see MasterChef on TV, but India Club made my dream come true by taking an effort of inviting Master Chef Mr. Jayanand Bhaskar for a live demonstration.

I am very pleased to recommend your venue to any such functions in future.

We played a lot of games. The Chef gave us a lot of informative tips and demonstrated innovative dishes.

Those were the days when there was no electricity, no running water in Dubai. We used to carry kerosene lanterns to go out of the house in the night, and travel to Deira by abra only.” “The last few years have been too hectic, with too much travel outside Dubai, with not much time left to be active in Club activities. This was the reason why I didn’t want to take up any major responsibility in India Club as well as the Indian High School, though I was active on the Board in both the institutions earlier”. His business interests have taken him to various countries. He was a special invitee on the Emirates Inaugural flight on 24th Oct 1985. And also, on the inaugural flight of British Airways in the Middle East.

A successful entrepreneur with a hectic schedule, Vashu, has not let his enthusiasm for sports get deterred by his demanding agenda. In fact, he has nurtured his skills and interest to benefit the other avid sports buffs around him as well. An ardent sportsman during his student days, Vashu was a champion in Cricket, Baseball and Football. A brilliant player and an avid critic as well. This opening batsman in Indian School, Bombay, pursued his passion in Sports and Games even after reaching foreign shores. He played at the British Royal Air Force, Sharjah and was also a part of CBFS, Sharjah. He later became a sponsor for and subsequently a Committee Member of CBFS. His fervent admiration of Cricket made him undertake journeys to distant destinations to watch major tournaments, such as the one in Lahore in 1996; London in 1999; Johannesburg in 2003; Mumbai in 2011. “I am so crazy about the game that I have been fondly treasuring a Cricket bat autographed by the West Indies Team on my 50th birthday (12th Nov. 1985)”. Vashu has held the post of Chairman of the India Club and has been on the Committee for several terms. He has sponsored numerous tournaments; especially Badminton, for more than 11 years. “I used to reach the club sharp at 7 for playing Badminton every day. A muscle tear in my thigh made me discontinue the game.” Reminiscing his earlier days in business, Vashu said, “I landed in Dubai on 3rd Sept 1957 to join my father’s business. “Considering the size of the Indian Community, it will be ideal if India Club gets more space to accommodate more members, perform and encourage more sports activities. Space near to the Indian High School near Silicon Oasis can be thought of. There are practical difficulties, of course, since that area is not well-connected by Metro or Bus, and is not in the heart of the City like the present one. A suitable solution can be arrived at by the present Club committee to circumvent such problems, which will be definitely supported by all of us, to benefit more members”. Achiever in more arenas than one, this soft-spoken gentleman believes in keeping a low profile. Simple and unassuming, Vashu feels satisfied with the way his business and family have grown. He is blessed with four children. Two Sons and one daughter are looking after the business. The children are also active members of the India Club. Like all long term residents, Vashu also shares his vision for Dubai. He sees the place continually growing and flourishing in the years to come... Cheti Chand is celebrated as New Year's Day by Sindhis. Chet is the Sindhi name for the first month of the lunar calendar Chaitra. Chand signifies the New Moon. The spirit associated with this festival encourages us to move forward with the firm hope of attaining our goals, fulfilling our dreams and achieving great heights. The Sindhi community celebrates the festival of Cheti Chand in honour of the birth of Ishtadeva Uderolal, popularly known as Jhulelal, the Patron Saint of the Sindhis.

Raat Cheti Chand Ji This auspicious day is rich in traditions and customs, and celebrated with gaiety and grandeur. Water – the elixir of life, is worshipped by the Sindhis on this day. The concept behind this is, just like the flowing water, we need to keep moving ahead in life. This is an important lesson that Lord Varuna (God of water) teaches us. Like the free flowing water, we need to forget the past and start flowing with positive thoughts from this Cheti Chand. We should put our worries and mistakes behind us, start afresh and move ahead in life. Cheti Chand was celebrated at the Club on April 11. To celebrate the event, M. D. Ramchandani and his troupe were flown down from India along with mimicry king Ashok Sunderani. The 2.5-hour show also saw performances by Shehnaz Sheikh, who is renowned for her Kutchi folk singing. A lot of members were attired in the traditional Sindhi dress. A food court serving Sindhi specialties like Chola Dhabal, Bhugar Chawar, Sai Bhaji, Sanna Pakora, Aloo Tuk had over 1000 members and guests relishing the authentic gastronomic fare. The event was supported by over 20 Sindhi Business houses based in Dubai.

Dada Dadi ki Kahaniyaan Dada Dadi Ki Kahaniyaan... LIVE STORY TELLING All of us have such wonderful memories of snuggling into the quilt with our grandparents and listening to the Kahani from them. In today’s world of TV and i-pads, our kids seem to have lost the privilege of this simple joy. In a humble attempt to pull our little ones away from gadgets & gizmos, and connect them to the infinite world of imagination, India Club recently started a LIVE STORY TELLING session which was an icebreaking initiative from the Club’s side for its tiny tot members.

g Narra

The first session was during a lively evening on the 28th of April at the Club’s library – Creative Corner, and our little tots along with the squeaky mouse used all their wits to scare away a unique monster called Gruffalo,. They simply loved the journey of the story along the deep dark woods, used their little wisdom to scare ghastly animals and took pride in creating their very own silly monsters. Last but not the least, our children put their brave foot forward to get a picture perfect moment with the Gruffalo. The second session on 18th May was very interesting and got the kids all excited. With the cutouts of the Gingerbread man, the story seemed like a real person. The story was followed by a creative Art Activity. Pragti had a message to convey to little kids, with the help of a Live Story Telling Workshop conducted on 26th June. The interesting story laid stress on the importance of drinking water. The kids had fun with a few unusual friends, who were Funk-a-Punk, with a bunch of Kangaroos, Moose, Otters and Skunk. These friends disliked Aerated and Sugary drinks and hence the kids were encouraged to dispose off the containers In the dustbin. The live story session was followed by a “Do Your Own Puppet” Art Work. It was good to see the kids playing with the puppets made by them.

Here’s Grufallo!

We look forward to our little ones joining us for the forthcoming exciting and stimulating live story extravaganzas in the Club’s library.

Amazing Raconteur! “Thou Shalt Not is soon forgotten, but Once Upon a Time is forever.” Philip Pullman An eager to listen child and a passionately committed mother, who doesn’t tire of repeatedly telling the same stories, on her little one’s demand, aptly describes PRAGTI RATHORE – the vivacious story teller!

Having a degree in Education and an additional MBA in Marketing, Pragti has worked in the corporate sector for almost a decade. Her own experience with motherhood made her realize that kids are like sponges, eager to soak up whatever comes their way in the most interesting manner. In the process of exposing her children to a wide array of Early Years Literacy experiences, she herself realized the difference a focussed approach can have on little minds “It is all worth it when you see that sparkle in the eyes of children, their little hands in the air to share their hearts out and their desire to hear you again and again. Where else will you get such a wonderful and innocent audience?” she says.

Captivating Perfo

20 India Club

The simple act of telling stories enhanced with voice modulation, miming, acting and puppeteering has earned Pragti many a hug and smile from the little ones. Pragti’s humble attempt to bring our screen-addicted children back into their own imaginary world is like a campaign, which we all as parents must support, if we want our children to be more involved in interpersonal interactions.

It was nearly a decade back when a first-ever autobiography of an NRI was launched, titled “Taking the High Road” on 10th September, 2003. Over 10,000 copies of the first edition were printed. Mr. Abdul Rahman Mutaiwee, who is now UAE Ambassador to UK, and was Director General of Dubai Chamber of Commerce, was the person who encouraged Dr. Buxani to write the book and it was he who launched it as well. Bikram Vohra, a journalist par excellence and Vijay Mohan, a talented yet humble journalist, stood by Dr. Buxani in his endeavours. Ian Fairservice supported Dr. Buxani to make his work see the light of day, as well as made it reach a large number of readers. The new edition of the book ‘Taking the High Road’ published by Motivate Publishing is an updated version of the earlier one, wherein a lot of things since the last decade on Dr. Buxani’s personal front have been catalogued to keep his readers up-to-date. The new edition of the book was released at India Club on Sunday, the 16th June ‘13 by H. E. M.K. Lokesh, Ambassador of India to the UAE and Mr. Ian Fairservice, Director, Motivate Publishing.

Healthcare at its best...

Better Safe than Sorry In order to enhance the safety at the Club’s premises, a fire drill was conducted with the assistance of the Dubai Civil Defense. As part of the drill, the Dubai Police and Ambulance services were actioned into service on June 29. The Dubai Civil Defense, in a note of appreciation, applauded the Club for taking the role of the fire services seriously.

The Madhushala Bar has gone high tech as the traditional menu cards are done away with and have been replaced with i-pads – it’s fun for both members and guests to go through the menu…don’t also forget to come in a bit early to take advantage of the newly introduced Happy hour from 7.30pm to 8.30pm in the bar.

Be Fit as a Fiddle Also, this summer we have tied up with the Absolute Swimming Academy to provide a lady trainer for individual and group swimming classes, mother and baby swimming classes and Aqua aerobics. We are having techno shape machines installed in the gymnasium to help those who have issues with the stubborn adipose tissues around the waist. The boxing classes will also commence shortly. The walking / jogging track around the basketball court should also be ready by the end of summer.

Emergency Management Lessons

An Elegant Make Over The first week of September will see the refurbished Reception at the Club. In short, a lot of whole new activities to ensure you continue enjoying your time at the Club…
