EXPLORE THE Y Why the Y The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall counties. Your Y Membership Offers All This and More! Everyone belongs at the YMCA! We’re more than just a place to work out; more than a place where families can spend quality time together; more than a place to learn to swim; more than a place for kids to play team sports; and more than a place for seniors to stay young at heart. We’re all those things and more. We’re a place where you belong! Y Member Benefits: • Galowich-Smith Full Members enjoy unlimited use of the Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs and the Morris Community Y. They may also use the C.W. Avery Family Y twelve times during a calendar year. • C.W. Avery Y Full Members enjoy unlimited use of the Avery, Galowich, Smith and Morris branches. • Morris Y Full Members enjoy unlimited use of the Morris Community YMCA and twelve visits to the Galowich, Smith and C.W. Avery Family YMCAs during a calendar year. • Priority registration on all programs. • Lower member rates on programs. • Five guest passes per calendar year. • Full Members enjoy free fitness orientations. • Free child watch services with a family membership. • No contracts to sign. • When you join the YMCA, not only do you get a good value, you get good values. That’s because everything we do is centered around the Christian character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Member Code of Conduct In support of our Christian character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, all members are expected to behave appropriately while using YMCA facilities and abide by the Member Code of Conduct and Discipline Policy. Those who choose to act inappropriately, as defined by YMCA staff, may be asked to leave the building. Repeat offenses may lead to a membership suspension or revocation of all privileges. AWAY Program - Always Welcome at the YMCA When you travel outside of the greater Joliet area, you can use your Y membership at more than 2,000 locations across the country. Some guest fees and limitations may apply. Please contact the Y you are visiting for details. Members from other YMCAs across the country may enjoy the amenities at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA branches up to twelve times per calendar year. Please contact the Membership Desk for hours, availability and additional information. Bring a Friend to the Y Current members may bring guests to the Y to share the YMCA experience. When a friend joins the Y, members receive one FREE month of membership. New members must maintain an active paid status for a minimum of two months. Plus, your friend will receive a gift for joining! See the Membership Desk for guest and referral details. Transferring Your Y Membership Members of other YMCAs looking to join the Galowich or Smith Family YMCAs should cancel their existing memberships and speak to a representative of our Membership Services Team. The YMCA is America’s Most Trusted Swim Instructor.
In Y classes, not only are you taught in a caring way how to swim, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.
YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures
1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor. 2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered. Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these levels varies greatly. 3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.
Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit

The YMCA is America’s Favorite Swim Instructor.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Erik Schelling
In less than two years, Erik Schelling has lost upwards of 150 pounds. Amazingly, he hasn’t lost a single ounce of commitment. Now a fitness enthusiast, Erik visits the Galowich Family YMCA up to six times a week. What’s his secret? “A good old fashioned desire to keep going,” he says. “Stick-to-itiveness.” Erik typically gets to the Y at 5 a.m., sometimes earlier. When the doors open, he’s one of the first people in. At that hour, the Y is fairly quiet, occupied only by a handful of early risers, or fellow “five-o’clockers,” as Erik calls them. “There are usually a couple of us standing around waiting for Layne to open the doors,” he said. “I see some of them every day, and if they don’t see you working out one day, they’ll ask, ‘Where were you yesterday?’ It’s an informal accountability. It’s fun.”
Erik’s before photo.
On most days, Erik hits the wellness center for an hour or so, where he focuses on strength training and cardio. On other days, he’ll jump in for a session of AM Boot Camp. As of late, his focus has shifted from weight loss to weight maintenance. In fact, he plans to add some weight back on—this time in the form of lean muscle. Once he does that, he says, he’ll start preparing for his next challenge: Completing a half-marathon. “It’s nice to be able to continue to see where I can take it,” Erik said. “If I stop where I’m at and I maintain this level, I’m cool with that. If I take it a little further, which I plan to do, that will be great too.” Many years ago, well before his weight loss journey began, Erik became a member of the Galowich Family YMCA Advisory Council. As a volunteer, he has been instrumental to the Y’s mission. Only now—not only does Erik help spread the Y’s mission—he lives it.

IGNITE YOUR PASSION Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA
The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve. Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: • Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Committees and Branch Advisory Councils • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of our community • Plan our annual Giving Gala • Coach our youth sports teams • Motivate and support youths in our teen programs to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals • Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events Our volunteers also play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. We welcome and appreciate anyone 16 years of age or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity.
