Family Fitness Day in the park

INSIDE THIS WEEK

By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

The 5210 Family Fitness Day in the Park will be held Sept. 13 in the Selmer City Park from 9 a.m. until noon. There will be activities for all ages, including a run/walk, zumba, door prizes, yoga, pedal cars, party jumpers and more. The event is sponsored by the McNairy Health Council. This is the third year for the event, according to Schancey Chapman, extension agent for the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, McNairy County. There will be about 20 health exhibits. Each booth will have information on health and nutrition and will give out prizes. These include jump ropes, frisbees, water bottles, pedometers and more. There will be free fruit and water for everyone who attends. The fun run/walk is two miles. Registration for it begins at 8:30 a.m and the run/walk begins at 9 a.m. There will be monetary prizes for the run/walk. Prizes will be awarded for the oldest person who participates, the youngest and the first three people who cross the finish line. There will be zumba, yoga and karate demonstrations on the stage that will last about 15 minutes each. Strength balls will be given out, as well as a broom made and donated by Jack Martin. Teresa Martin will demonstrate zumba, yoga will be demonstrated by Simchaa Huizar and Cameron Miller will demonstrate karate. Around 500 people turned out for the event two years ago and 600 for last year’s event. “Everything’s free,” Chapman said. This is made possible by many people donating items and money to the event.

“It makes everything free for everybody,” Chapman said. The 5210 program is a public education program to bring awareness to the daily guidelines for nutrition and physical activity. The five in 5210 stands for five servings of fruits and vegetables each day, the two stands for two hours or less of television and computer a day, the one stands for one hour of play or exercise each day and zero stands for zero sugar-sweetened beverages per day. For more information on 5210 Family Fitness Day in the Park, call Schancey Chapman at (731) 645-3598. The Books from Birth Bus is expected to visit McNairy County on Sept. 13 at 9 a.m. at the Selmer City Park. The Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation will launch its “Books from Birth 10th Anniversary Tour” on Aug. 26 in Johnson County and conclude at the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville on Sept. 30, visiting some 50 counties across the state in a forty five foot decorated touring coach. The “Books from Birth 10th Anniversary Tour” is being made possible in part through the generous support of the program’s bus tour partner, Delta Dental of Tennessee. The purpose of the “Books from Birth 10th Anniversary Tour” is to celebrate the anniversary of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Tennessee and the more than 20 million books mailed to children since the program began. Bus stop activities will include; enrolling children, recognizing the work of volunteers and donors and engaging communities in support of the program. The GBBF will provide reading themed giveaways for children at each stop.

The two solar farms being built by Strata Solar for Dominion are on schedule to be completed within about a month, according to constuction superintendent Rylee Gortner, a self-described “solar energy cowboy”. Testing will then begin with the handoff to Dominion which will occur around the end of the year. Around 400 people are working on the Selmer project, which is off Highway 45 near Walmart and the Mulberry project on Highway 142. “Everything’s going extremely well,” said Strata Solar Vice-President of Marketing and Sales Blair Schooff. Around 400 local workers are employed at the sites and more will be hired soon. The two solar farms will produce about 15 megawatts of energy each. Together, the two solar farms are expected to produce enough electricity to power about 4,000 average Tennessee Valley homes.
