After ending last year’s season 3-10, having to forfeit one game, Adamsville head coach Steve Price feels confident the 2013 season will be much better than the last. There are five seniors playing for the Cards this year, four of which are returning from last year. “One player we are really excited to have return is senior, Quinton Brasher,” said Price, “He played his freshman year with us but had to move. Fortunately he is back, and he has a lot of talent.” 2013 Adamsville soccer Captain is senior Dustin Plunk, and he is thought to be one of AHS’s strongest players. He has been playing with Adamsville since his freshman year and has great leadership abilities. Goalkeeper for this year is

returning senior Nathan Skinner. Along with Skinner other seniors include Tyler Hollin, River Moore, Dustin Plunk, and Quinton Brasher. “One of our biggest strengths is the leadership of this senior class, and the fact that we will have a strong mid-field this season, ” said Price. “We have a young team because of all the new players that came out this year compared to the last, but there are several underclassmen that show promise.” As for any upcoming season predictions, Coach Price said ,“It would be hard to say, for the fact that we are such a young team. If they continue to play hard and rely on each other I can see them doing very well,” said Price. Adamsville Cardinals lost their first game, which happened to be against McNairy Central at AHS on March 12, with a score of 5-2.

Head Coach: Nick Cook Manager: Zach Weaver

By Stephanie Parsons Sports Writer McNairy Central Boys’ Soccer coach and 2011 All-District Coach of the Year Nick Cook enters his fifth year as head coach, in the past leading the Bobcats to some of their best seasons, which include being named No. 1 in their sub-district. “We finished in the top three the past two years in our district, and the program has gotten stronger and stronger every year and over the years that stability has been something we have been able to build off of,”said Cook. For the MCHS soccer team, 2013 has been a year of transition after losing eight seniors, most of which were the team’s top players, to graduation last year. Therefore, a lot of effort has gone into rebuilding the team. Team Captains, D.Z. Robinson and Joyner Pollard, both seniors, will play a big role on the field. Cook said, “Joyner is our general field for

offense and Robinson makes sure the defense is doing what they’re supposed to be doing. We have great leadership.” “That leadership will be a great help to some of the freshmen and other new members joining the Bobcats this year. A lot of players that sat on the bench in the previous years are stepping up, and we will see how they will do,” Cook stated. For the first time ever, McNairy Central Boys’ soccer team will have junior varsity along with varsity teams. For the third consecutive year, junior Tyler Henry will be playing goal keeper for the Bobcats. The Bobcats are getting off to a great start for 2013, winning their first game against the Adamsville Cardinals on March 12 at AHS. Coach Cook is looking to see many great things from the Bobcats soccer team this season and to hopefully finish in the top of their district.

There will be obstacles to overcome, but the Adamsville Cardinal and Lady Cardinal tennis players are ready to improve upon a successful 2012 campaign. The boys will return the entirety of last year’s squad, including the doubles pairing of the Trumble brothers, Anthony and Cody. Cameron Gramse and Josh Warshaw will compete together as Adamsville’s other doubles group. “We didn’t lose anyone for the boys,” said Cardinal head coach Michael Harvill. “They’re still young, but with a year’s experience I’m expecting better results this year. That’s a good thing and something to build on.” The team also picked up senior Seth Killingsworth, junior Colton Williams, and sophomore Shadden Busse who will aid the Cards along the way. Adamsville’s girls had one of their best seasons in recent mem-

ory last year but will have to overcome the loss of several key contributors. “It’s going to be interesting to see how people step up,” said Harvill. “As a team it’s going to be a lot harder to do the things that we wanted. It’s going to take the whole team stepping up and moving up. Some will even have to move up two places in the lineup from where they were, and they’ll have to get comfortable being there.” Leading the way will be 2012 Region 8 Female Tennis Player of the Year, Darby Congiardo. Now a senior, Congiardo’s success took her all the way to the individual state tournament a year ago, and she is itching for another shot at a championship. Sophomores Ali Gean, Crystal Lewis and Allison Smarsh, along with lone junior Hayley Edmondson, will be counted on heavily if Adamsville intends on competing with tough district competition like Madison, Trinity Christian, and Sacred Heart.

By Stephanie Parsons Sports Writer

MCHS head coach Steve Hickman is entering his 12th year of coaching the Bobcats tennis team and has great expectations for the lady Bobcats. Though many of his players on the boys team are entering their first season, he said that they show great potential and will have four years to build their game. This fall, many of the Bobcats’ upcoming players had the fortunate opportunity to take lessons from tennis pro Tom Hay from Jackson. With only one senior, Shelby Kennedy, and returning junior, Mallory Sweat, the rest of the team is relatively new to the game. Shelby Kennedy, who finished in the top of the district last year, is hopeful to finish top in her district this year as well. “Shelby Kennedy is one of the strongest players I have, and one of the strongest girls in the district; however, there are several promising girls she will have to play against,” said Hickman. “She has worked really hard, and

I can see her finishing in the top three in the district.” Junior Mallory Sweat is another player that shows a lot of promise. Hickman stated, “The boys are young, but they have a lot of potential. In two years time they could be very good.” Second year player for the boys’ team is sophomore Adam Harris, who is expected to do well in individuals. New players, freshmen Grant Goodman and Sam Pierce, are showing improvement with every practice, explained Hickman. With an excess of girls, the boys need to have another player in order to not have to forfeit doubles matches. The minimum amount of matches is five singles and two doubles. Hickman has another player in the wings for the boys team and is hopeful he will show up so the Bobcats will not have to forfeit upcoming matches. In his predictions for the upcoming season, coach Hickman expects his girls will do well , but without the players to perform in the boys matches it will be hard for them to really go far in the district.

The Adamsville Lady Cardinals come into the 2013 season with a young but experienced team and are looking to make a statement in district play. “We have been trying to get better on defense,” said head coach Todd McGee. “I thought going in that we are going to have good pitching, and we want to make plays behind them. If we maintain our pitching, have a quality defense and get two or three runs a game, we can beat some people and do well in our district.” The Cardinals are looking

to four seniors to step up and make plays this year. “So far the one that has done the most for us at the plate is Whitney Wrzesniewski. She has had a very good first part of the year and has done a very good job at putting the ball in play. Also, Samantha Oaks has been hitting the ball well, along with others, and if we can keep it up we can have a successful season.” The Lady Cardinals will also be counting on strong play from the younger players, with a couple of eighth graders who will be in the lineup. Their district is tough, but AHS will be ready to play deep in the post season.

Head Coach: Mellanie Surratt Assistant Coach: Stacy Volner

The McNairy Central Lady Bobcats and head coach Mellanie Surratt are looking forward to a strong season in 2013. “We are trying to get better by working as a team,” said Surratt. “Everyone knows their role and are doing their part. We need to get back to the fundamentals. We have to become a better bunting team, and we have to have a strong defense.” The Bobcats have four returning seniors and several other players who are looking to make a big impact in this new season. “We are going to depend on Kelly Beth Earnest on the mound a lot this year,” said Surratt. “We have others that can come in and get the job done, but Earnest will get most of the responsibility. The seniors are the anchor of our lineup. We rely on them to get us started, and we have some sophomores that will step us as well. It is going to take all of us this year, and we have to stay healthy and stay strong.” The Bobcats are playing in many tournaments early in the season and hope to be prepared for their district schedule and play well deep in the post season.

The Cardinals are looking forward to starting their new season with their new head coach Rennard Woodmore. Coach Woodmore has been with Adamsville since 2006 as assistant coach in both football and baseball. “I’m new,” said coach Woodmore. “ Coach Evans is new and coach Foley as well, but I think that we are going to mesh together and work well together, and I think that will transfer to the guys on the field.” The Cardinals are young this year with only two seniors in this years class, John Reed Odom and Josh Chappell. These two guys will be looked upon to lead the team and to make plays, but a lot of the younger guys are going to have to make plays as well. “We finished with a below 500

record last season,” said Woodmore. “We are looking to improve on that this season. We have to win the games we are supposed to win, and we have to sneak in a few more whenever we can. We are going to come to play every day. These guys are working hard on the field and in the weight room, and I think that will show on the field this year.” The Cardinals have talent, but their inexperience may be a factor in this season. “We are a blue collar team,” said Woodmore. “These guys work hard, and it’s going to show on the field. We might have a different line-up every night, but we are going to be better at the end than we are right now, and that’s where we need to be.” The Cardinals face a tough district, and it’s going to take some good baseball to advance into the post season and keep playing late into May.

The Bobcats are looking to improve on the record setting season they had in 2012. “We are working hard,” said head coach Brian Franks. “Our boys are here to work and they are hungry to make it back to the post season.” The Bobcats lost some starting pitching last season and are looking to some young guys to step up, but it’s going to be the seniors that lead the team. “We have a great group of seniors. Marcus Nash has been throwing well, Tyler Wells is coming around with the bat, and the entire group shows great leadership on the field,” said Franks. “We are going to do everything we can to compete, and we are not going to

give up until the last pitch is thrown. Last season we had some success, and the guys see how much work it takes to play at that level and they are putting in that work.” The Bobcats play a tough road in the early weeks of the season and are looking to work out the kinks before getting into the district schedule. “Playing these strong teams in the beginning of the season can only make us strong,” said Franks. “It prepares us for district games and shows us what we need to work on early in the season. This group of guys are here to work, and we are hoping to get the job done and win some ball games.” The Bobcats have all the tools to go back to the post season and will be giving their all to get back there, and even further.

Independent Appeal v Page 27c

McNairy County has rich baseball history This year is our 29th year hosting the Independent Appeal Baseball Spectacular. Just like the budding trees, new flowers and spring rains, this historic baseball tournament has become a regular part of Springtime in McNairy County. However, our county’s baseball roots reach back much further than the tournament. Baseball has been here a long time and we are proud that we have been able to be a part of that rich history. The first baseball in McNairy County seems to have been played in the Prospect Community in the late 1800’s. There was no equipment, and the marathon games lasted all day. Baseball again became popular in the 1920’s, and Stantonville fielded one of the best teams in the area. Among the Stantonville standouts were John Moffett, Orlanda Elam, Russell Gray, Earl Burks, Lloyd Matlock, Coach Robinson, John Glidwell. The real go-getter was Grady Horner, a standout pitcher. The era lasted from about 1920 until 1928, and sometimes heavy betting brought in top-name players–like Reese and Hank DeBerry. The DeBerrys were from Savannah, and Hank went on to star with the Brooklyn Dodgers and for a number of years stayed in the big leagues because he was Dazzy Vance’s personal catcher. C.L. Bias, a fine old-time player, said recently, “I was playing center field one day, and Hank drilled a home run so far over my head that he was sitting in the shade fannin’ himself when I finally found the ball.” There was John Plunk and Grover Pettigrew, catchers who they said could snatch the pitch from in front of the bat. And Buck Gilchrist, a lefthander who could pick runners off second and never turn around. Kenny Boyer once pointed out that the depression era produced good baseball players because the poor boys like his family had nothing to do in their off-time but play baseball. And so it was in McNairy County during the depression. Everybody played baseball. Baseball hit its peak in the 1930’s. It was highly competitive, and one of the super players of the day, Cal Wilson, was killed after a baseball game at Stantonville. Cal loved baseball better than anything in the world. He carried a suit in his gravel truck and when he found a game, got into it. He may have been the best left-handed hitter ever to live in the county. The good ones are endless – James Ammons, Alton Scott, Preston Smith, and Kerby Ferrell, who was the best all-around. He starred in the Southern League, then went on to play with the Boston Braves during the war years. In management, the minor league winning records of Kerby Farrell may never be surpassed. He managed the Cleveland Indians in 1954. A colorful team was the Gullyjumpers with Ben Clayton, J.R. and Will Miller, and a bunch more Millers. Kildee Carroll often came on the old days to pitch for money. He signed a professional contract but quit and came home. His nickname came from the tiny ankles. There was baseball in Heath’s Grove near

Adamsville. George Tidwell kept one of the finest teams ever assembled. He furnished jobs for the players, and they played the top teams of Memphis like Dabney Brothers and Pepsi Cola. In the later years, a lot of good baseball players came and went in McNairy County, including Don Blasingame, who starred for the St. Louis Cardinals. Ironically, a young man eventually succeeded Don as second baseman of the Cincinnati Reds. The young man isn’t young anymore, but he has stayed around and set a lot of records – Pete Rose. Tommy Dean, the Iuka boy, played at Stantonville before starring with the Dodgers and Padres. One day in a pasture lot, he batted twice with the bases loaded. The first time a grand slam and second time a triple – seven runs batted in with two swings. Then there was Jim Hardin, born at Morris Chapel. He signed with the Mets in 1961 and spent a summer pitching for Adamsville before starting his pro career.

Independent Appeal Baseball Spectacular With a sincere desire to build on the fantastic baseball tradition in McNairy County, the Independent Appeal launched its Baseball Spectacular in order to showcase high school baseball and provide local players with top-flight competition. The tournament has been a fixture in West Tennessee baseball since 1983. The tournament was organized by former Independent Appeal sports editor Jeff York and then McNairy Central baseball coach Danny Day. York would recruit the teams and do the paper work involved with the tournament. Day would work on the field and was the game-day director for the formative years. “This tournament revolutionized baseball in West Tennessee,” said legendary Adamsville coach Joe Bridges. “Danny Day and Jeff York deserve the credit for putting the tournament together when no one else did that in West Tennessee.” In 1983, the tournament had only four teams. The teams were MCHS, Hardin Co., Corinth and Chester County. Hardin Co. defeated Corinth in the finals of the ’83 and ’84 tournament. “It was good for the teams to face tough competition and play in a tournament atmosphere,” said Day. “The fact we got to play night games helped more people see the games and built interest in high school baseball.” McNairy Central got the first of three tourney titles in 1985. The Bobcats won the championship in Day’s last season as head coach in ’95 and also won the 2010 tournament. “Coach Day never got the credit he deserved for being a tireless worker and a good coach,” said Bridges. South Side edged AHS 2-1 in an exciting title game in the Cardinals’ second appearance in the tournament in 1986. South Side’s Mike Davis was the winning pitcher in all three games for the Hawks. Alcorn Central won consecutive titles in ’87 and ’88. The Bears and Iuka both won Mississippi State

tournaments in 1988. Munford’s 1989 title team is considered the best team to have ever played in the tourney. Munford’s Aaron Fultz and Jeff Fayne both signed pro contracts, and Fultz made it to the majors.   The tournament expanded in 1990 to an eightteam field, and half the tournament was played at Adamsville. Jackson South Side beat a hardfighting Adamsville team in the championship game. The 1991 tournament was canceled by the tornado that damaged Adamsville’s and McNairy’s baseball fields. In 1992, Hardin County took the trophy, beating Adamsville in the finals. Jackson Central-Merry took the championship game in 1993 and 1994, beating Bolivar Central and McNairy Central in respective years. McNairy Central followed their 1994 championship appearance with a tournament victory in 1995, opening their season with five wins to sweep all comers. Bolivar Central took the 1996 title from Hardin County in the finals. Jackson North Side won the 1997 trophy in the only championship game to be played outside of McNairy County. The final game was played at Oak Field in Jackson. McNairy Central did not compete in this tournament, instead traveling to Florida for a tournament in Pensacola. In the final tourney game of the millennium, Lexington shut out McNairy Central in the finals to take home the coveted trophy. Lexington then won its second straight tourney, downing Riverside in 2000. Hardin County begins a period of tournament dominance that would see the Tigers appearing in six consecutive tournament championships, while winning in 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2006. This included an undefeated 2002 tournament appearance in which the Tigers produced 62 total runs. McNairy Central stayed tough during this time, making two championship appearances in 2001 and 2006. Franklin County and Mt. Pleasant won the 2003 and 2004 tourneys, with each walking away with one-run victories over Hardin County. Adamsville took home the tournament trophy for the first time in 2007 after thumping Bolivar 10-2 in the championship game. Franklin County, Bolivar Central and McNairy Central were declared champs in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 tournaments respectively as pervasive rain throughout each tournament prevented the championship game from taking place. Chester County has brought tough competition to the tournament in recent years, beating McNairy Central in back to back finals in 2011 and 2012. Our staff would like to thank Billy Wagoner for his contribution with the county’s baseball history. We would also like to thank Danny Day and Jeff York for their efforts with historical background on the tournament and for all of the effort they have put forth over the years to make it a success.
