York looks back at 30 years of Spectacular baseball By Jeff York Contributor The 30th anniversary of the IndependentAppeal’s Baseball Spectacular brings back many good memories of good baseball games and outstanding players throughout the years. An idea to bring a high school baseball tournament to West Tennessee proved pivotal in helping build greater interest in the sport. The success of that first tournament at McNairy Central led to other tournaments across the area. McNairy Central coach Danny Day, the alltime leader in baseball wins for the Bobcats, fully supported the idea of the tournament. He felt the tournament would upgrade his program and increase the level of interest in high school baseball. There were few night games played in high school baseball in the early-80s and the tournament allowed more fans to come enjoy watching their favorite teams. The evening games led to many times when the bleachers were full of fans even when the

By Christen Coulon Managing Editor The Adamsville Cardinal Soccer Team’s strength and weakness is its youth. The team only has two returning seniors, and one junior. Both seniors, Jake Baker and Jack Majors returned to the sport after taking last year off to pursue other activities. With half of the team members in 9th grade or below the experience they gain during this season could help build this young team into a powerhouse in years to come. The team’s head coach, Steven Price, said he expects his team to improve throughout the season (and in future years) as the freshmen and junior high players gain experience at this level. Price said that he is happy with the team’s progress this year and said that their MCHS game which ended in a tie was one of the season highlights so far. Price said that the team is facing a

tough schedule this year with several really good teams. “The Jackson (Tenn.) teams are pretty tough,” Price said. “Lexington and Scott’s Hill are good this year too.” Price said that most of their players are multi-sport athletes this year, which helps keep them in shape, but it does not allow them to dedicate as much time to the sport like many of the other area teams. “We are sharing athletes with other teams, and (the other area teams) have travel teams and that is pretty much all they do.” Price said that keys to success for his team members will be to to execute, and get better first touches. “It’s a trial by fire,” Price said. “We will see what happens in a month or so, but they are learning and getting better every day.” Price said the help from volunteer assistant coach Dick White was helping and make a big difference with the team’s growth this year.

By Brian Azevedo Sports Editor The McNairy Central soccer team is looking to have a great season in 2014. The Bobcats have been on the field working hard day after day to get better and be a real force this season. “The first thing we work on is our attitude,” said head coach Nick Cook. “We are going to out work and out grind every other team that we face. Once we get our mind right, we are focused on playing defense both as individuals and as a team. We have to be able to defend, and to work together passing and moving the ball.” The Bobcats have their goals set out for this season, and some of them are especially important to their senior class. “We want a season that our guys can look back on,” said Cook. “I want them to be able to smile and be proud of the season that we have this year, and it will be a success. Naturally, however, we want to put some Ws in the win

column along the way.” The Bobcats will rely on their leadership on and off the field this season from their upperclassmen. “Our strength lies with our seniors,” said Cook. “They are all good men who lead on a off the field. I am proud to to have gotten to know each of them.” The Bobcats have many great games lined up in the upcoming season, and some are a little higher up on the list than others. “We have a strong rivalry with Adamsville,” said Cook. “However, this season our team seems to be especially excited about our match-up with Chester County.” No matter how things end up on the field however there are always lessons to be learned. “I want to see them grow and develop as players, as teammates, as friends, and as men with every game and every practice,” said Cook. “If we can do those things, we will end the season on top no matter what our record shows.”

In 2010, I ran for the Office of Sheriff based on my qualifications and experience managing employees and administering budgets. Today I can add results. In a 4 year period we have decreased property crimes by over 40% and increased Drug Arrest by over 300%. Revenues for the Sheriff’s Office are at an all time high and the cost of operating the Sheriff’s Office is being shifted away from tax payers and onto the funds generated by the Sheriff’s Office. Adamsville Tennis is coming into the 2014 season with big hopes and talent on the court. “We have had solid, quality practices,” said head coach Michael Harvill. “We are focusing on our weaknesses, and we are becoming stronger all around as a team.” The team is going to have some positives going into the 2014 season. “We are looking to have a very competitive season,” said Harvill. “We do have a lot of experience. There are some of our players who are beginners and new to the team but overall we have an experienced group.” This experience is going to help the Cardinals as they compete in a very strong district. “We have a strong schedule,” said Harvill. “Trinity Christian is probably one of our toughest match-ups, they have a consistently good program and several very talented players.” Although winning is the first goal for any team, it is not the only goal for the Cardinal Tennis program. “I want to see my players mature,” said Harvill. “I want to see them get better overall and really meet their full potential.” The Cardinals and the Lady Cardinals will be giving their all on the court, and with hard work and determination could be playing deep into the post season.

By Brian Azevedo Sports Editor The McNairy Central Bobcat tennis team is following along with most of the rest of the sports in the county, and have a very young team taking the court this season in 2014. The Bobcats have no seniors on their roster this season, and have a good group of players and are working hard to get better. “Some players have gone as far as to take private lessons,” said head coach Steve Hickman. “Also we have been working hard as a team, and we are preparing for the season the best we can.” On the boys’ side of the court the Bobcats have been looking strong so far this season, while the girls side are still working to get better. “The boys are somewhat stronger than the girls this season,” said Hickman. “For our guys, I would really like

to see a winning season and overall improvement. Currently the boys are 3-1, and the only loss came from Hardin County who is not in our district. I think our girls record is inverted from that, but they are working extremely hard and are making good progress.” The Bobcats and their young team, will have a tough schedule ahead, but also some exciting matchups as well. “We usually have a healthy rivalry with Adamsville,” said Hickman. “However, this season they were taken out of our district. I would say that right now our biggest rival in the district is Chester County, but we go into every game looking to play our best.” The Bobcats have many goals for this season, but a few stand above the others. “We are looking for overall improvement,” said Hickman. “We want to be able to win, and win with class and an overall good attitude.”

The Adamsville Lady Cardinals are coming off of a good season in 2013, but with the loss of four seniors the Lady Cards will need some of their young players to step up. Adamsville will only have two seniors leading the way in the 2014 season, in Anna and Olivia Johnson. Both of the Johnson twins have signed commitments to play at the next level, and will be a vital part of the Lady Cardinal lineup. Although the Lady Cardinals, like much of the rest of the county, have a young team they will have good experience in the pitching circle. Sophomores Gabby Morris and Parker Davis look to anchor the Lady Cardinals on the pitching rubber, while also providing big bats in the middle of the lineup. With the Johnson twins playing well, the Sophomores dominating the pitching rubber and the rest of the team coming through in clutch situations the

Lady Cardinals will be a tough team to beat on the diamond. Playing together as a team Adamsille will be hard to beat. Adamsville has a chance this season to play deep into the post season, and they will rely on the girls coming together as a team to win. “We are young, but we do have some experience on the field,” said head coach Todd McGee. “We have to continue to improve, and we have to work hard everyday in order to compete in our district and complete our team goals.” The Lady Cardinals have been playing well early in the season, and have already seen a perfect game from Gabby Morris against the Middleton Tigers. The Lady Cardinals currently stand lower in the 15A district standings, but still have many district contests remaining and look to finish the season strong. Adamsville will have a good chance to go deep into the post season, but they will have to come together and work as a team to be successful in this tough district.

The McNairy Central Lady Bobcats lost four seniors from the 2013 season, and like many other teams in the area are looking for their young players to step up and play a big role in the 2014 season. With Junior pitcher Kelly Beth Ernest anchoring the team from the pitching rubber, the Lady Bobcats look to compete in the strong 14AA District. However, one player is never enough. The Lady Bobcats will be looking for everyone to step up and play a major role this season. The Lady Bobcats will be going up against last year’s State Champions, the Lexington Tigers, and they will make it a tough road for the Lady Cats in the post season. McNairy will be looking towards their freshmen to play a big role for the Lady Cats this season, with Dani Mask behind the plate, Selika McCord swinging a hot bat and Allison Sweat making a big impact in the outfield. “We are young, but we have a great

group of girls who work hard and play for each other,” said head coach Mellanie Surratt. The Lady Bobcats are going to have to play well during their district schedule to make it deep into post season play, but behind the arm of Ernest anything can happen. The Lady Cats are currently standing with a 2-1 record in District 14AA, and hope to notch a few more wins before they get into the district tournament. Being second place in the district, the Bobcats will avoid having to play the Lexington Tigers early in the tournament, and could extend their season deep into the Region Tournament or better with strong play, and teamwork. With a lot of the attention in the area on the Bobcat baseball team and their newly rebuilt facilities, the Lady Bobcats are flying under the radar, but playing good softball. Coach Surratt and the Lady Cats are full of energy and will not quit until the last pitch is thrown, and that makes for an exciting season where anything can happen.

Celebrating 30 Years

Independent Appeal Baseball Spectacular hits milestone By Jeff York Contributor

The idea of sponsoring a high school baseball tournament was never about making money, but it was about supporting the young men and the high schools that played in the tournament. It would be tough to gauge the economic impact of the tournament on McNairy County. The obvious benefactors of the tournament are convenience stores and the fast food businesses in the county. When you bring multiple teams from outside the county to participate in the Baseball Spectacular it is easy to see the possible impact on the local economy. According to Danny Day, MCHS Athletic Director, the schools raise an average of $3,000 annually from the tournament. The total contribution raised over the 30 years of the Independent Appeal Baseball Spectacular exceeds $90,000 to support both high school baseball programs. The Independent Appeal uses money from the tournament’s tabloid to pay for the umpires in the tournament. This enables the two county schools to play home games without the expenses of paying umpiring fees. A goal of the newspaper is to support young people in the community

and this is one of the areas that allows us to reach that goal. The words ‘our county paper’ means something to the owner of the paper Janet Rail and the rest of her staff. She believes that being philanthropic is a part of giving back to the people that have helped the Independent Appeal earn that status. From Mt. Pleasant in Middle Tennessee to Bishop Byrne in Memphis to Henry County on the Kentucky line, many schools have traveled to McNairy County to play baseball. This has allowed many people to visit our county that may never have come without a baseball tournament. The popularity of ‘travel ball’ has shown that tournaments do bring in an influx of people willing to spend money in the host towns. Economic experts say that money can be turned over four times and that is beneficial to our county. A county that has major unemployment problems needs all the extra money possible spent here to boost our economy. The sales tax income is vital in lifting our county by improving the financial base. If the weather is good next week for baseball then you will see many team colors spread across the county, but the color green is the one that will put the most smiles on faces of business owners in McNairy County.

Coach Rennard Woodmore is heading into his second season as head coach of the Adamsville Cardinals, and much like last season he just wants to get better. “You always have to work to get better,” said Woodmore. “You can never be satisfied, their is always a part of the game that needs to be worked on and I have a group of guys this season that buy into that idea. We work to get better everyday.” The Cardinals lost a few key seniors last season, but have a good group of seniors this year, to help fill the roles. Adamsville will rely heavy on these seniors to help lead their team, and to help them make it deep into post season play. Weather its Alex McSwain behind the plate, Jacob Wallis in the middle infield, or Tevor Griffin and Dustin Neill patrolling the outfield, the Cardinal seniors will play a big role in leading this team. The Cardinals, who seems to be fol-

lowing the trend with the rest of the county teams, have a lot of young talent coming up and getting a lot of playing time early. From Sophomores like Austin Cotner and Laderrick Means, to freshmen like Carson Hopkins and Gage Wardlow, and Allen Wells who is in eighth grade, the Cardinals will rely on their young players to step up into major roles and hopefully compete well in their tough district. “We have to keep working hard to get better,’ said Woodmore. “We have a young team, but we have a really good group of seniors to help lead the way. We have to focus on the parts of the game that we can control and we have to not worry about the thing we cannot. We are young and we are going to make mistakes, we just have to limit those mistakes and be able to overcome them by relying on each other and working together doing the little things right.” Adamsville was defeated in the district 15A Tournament last season, and hope to come together and make it past that point in 2014.

Last season the McNairy Central Bobcat baseball team made a strong run, but lost in a heart breaker in the region tournament. This year head coach Brian Franks and his team are looking to get back to post season play. During the offseason, the Bobcats made some dramatic changes to their field, which will give fans a much better experience at the ball park. With a new backstop, press box, bleachers and scoreboard, the Bobcats will hopefully play as good as the field looks to the support of many more fans. After losing several seniors last season, the Bobcats are looking for their younger players to step up and fill the open positions. Being such a young team, the Bobcats will be relying heavily on this season’s senior class to be leaders both on and off the field. In the infield, seniors Clay Dancer, Jonathan Nixon and Matt Chandler will be trying to make plays for whoever is on

the mound, while BJ Dickey and others are roaming the outfield looking to snag anything that comes their way. The Bobcats will also have a familiar name behind the plate, even though it will be a different face. Freshman Logan Roberts will be taking his brothers place behind the plate for the Bobcats, and the young catcher looks to quickly make an impact for his team. The Bobcats play in a tough district in 14AA, with Jackson Southside, Chester County and Lexington all having strong teams. However, coach Franks and the Bobcats will be prepared and they will work hard to make another run deep into post season play. “We have to come together as a team,” said Franks. “We have a lot of young guys this year and are going to step up and make a big impact for us, and we have a good group of upper classmen that will be leading the way. We play in a tough district, and we have to be able to preform on the field on a day to day basis to obtain our goals of playing deep into the post season.”
