Message from the Chair

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the official magazine of InciSioNGhana. As you peruse this, you will be introduced to an organization that has a vast national and global reach and a most noble mission.

It has been an honor and a privilege serving as the founding chair of InciSioNGhana, it is amazing to see what we have achieved in the last couple of years.

Since its inception, InciSioN-Ghana has focused on its mission on education and raising awareness on the message of global surgery of safe affordable and timely surgical, anaesthesia and obstetric care irrespective of geographical location.

We have laid out initiatives aimed to support the development of academic surgeons across the spectrum from medical student to residents, and the incorporation of social media to better disseminate information and to broaden the reach of our society.

Everything we do aligns with our goal of moving the field of global surgery forward to provide better care for patients everywhere.

Through our mother association (InciSioN Global) and network of members in over 54 countries we are able to provide access to an array of opportunities to medical students/Junior doctors interested in global health/global surgery that no other organization in the world can offer.

These endeavors have been highly successful, largely due to the immense work of the current executive leadership, members involved and support from InciSioN Global: but the challenge remains in ensuring that our mission and vision, and the message of equity in healthcare persists in the ever changing healthcare landscape.

In the coming years we will continue to support the essential role of surgery in Universal Health Coverage by growing our membership, building our networks and our community, and fostering the relationships that are so special in global surgery, between different specialties, people in different countries, and people at different ends of their careers.

If you are a medical student, junior doctor or resident in Ghana, please consider this my personal invitation to you to join InciSioNGhana, a vibrant and diverse association. As you continue your visit to our SoMe handles, don’t forget to check the links to some of our other affiliated websites.

The forward momentum, the initiatives, and the growth of InciSioN-Ghana are exciting to watch, and I cannot wait to see the directions the society takes in the next several years!

Thank you again for the privilege and honor of serving as your Chair. See you all in the next Global Surgery Symposium In November 2022.

“Only through a unified commitment to research, advocacy, policy development, and investment, accompanied by coordinated local and international action, will this Commission's vision of universal access to safe, affordable surgical and anaesthesia care when needed be realised in our global community.”

~ Global Surgery 2030: evidence and solutions for achieving health, welfare, and economic development.

The need to empower medical students and early career physician with the necessary research skills is prudent hence the InciSioN Ghana Research Mentorship Program (RMP), inspired by the successfully-run Global PaedSurg Research Training Fellowship which was organized by the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS), was launched in March, 2022 and is currently running.

The InciSioN Ghana RMP entailed 10 didactic online webinars on undertaking a research project from inception to producing a publishable manuscript in a year long program. Having received over 500 applications not only from Ghana but also from InciSioN members from Bangladesh, Brazil, Nigeria, India and Lebanon, 12 local mentors and 9 international mentors have been matched to 29 mentees who are working on independent high-impact studies. 109 mentees grouped into 22 teams are undertaking various systematic review meta-analytical research projects according to similar interests.
