Stewardship: Time, Treasure, and Talent “Every faculty you have, your power of thinking or of moving your limbs from moment to moment, is given you by God. If you devoted every moment of your whole life exclusively to His service, you could not give Him anything that was not in a sense His own already.” —C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Advent/Christmas

October-December 2016 Inside this issue:

Thank you for being a partner in the ministry of Incarnation Episcopal Church! Your ongoing financial contributions are making a difference in the lives of many people. Throughout the year we touch people’s lives through our Sunday and Tuesday Eucharist services, our Friday Taizé services, our annual Book Sale, our annual Bazaar, and many other ways. In the past, we have also provided key services in after school programs, ESL and other language programs, and programs through our Healing Center.

One of the vital new ways we are reaching out into our neighborhood is through our Sunset Music & Arts initiative. Through this initiative we not only provide the opportunity for artists and musicians to showcase their talents, but also provide the community with affordable and accessible live arts performances in an intimate setting. Last year, a third of all our offerings were free to the public. That is just one of the ways in which we do creative ministry and be true to our mission “Come and be fed: body, mind, and spirit.”

The members of the Altar Guild request your donation to decorate the Church for the Christmas season. Please make checks payable to the Altar Guild.

The practice of generosity is a faith discipline and a mark of a growing faith and deeper walk with Christ. We know that not everyone will be able to give in response to what they have received and that these difficult financial times present a challenge to some families. We also believe in God’s abundance and our ability through that trust, to provide the resources that will empower our church to do even greater things. We ask you to join us in prayerful preparation as we kick off our Stewardship Campaign and thank you for your part in this life changing work, here at Incarnation.

The Diocese has mandated that all parishes and other groups within the Diocese develop a Disaster Preparedness Plan. We formed a team comprising of Ken Combs, Fr. Lui, Fr. Miner, Tamara Poole, Jill Smith, Tom Wong and myself. We received considerable help from Susan Schmidt of San Francisco CARD (Community Agencies Responding to Disaster) We developed a Plan which we submitted to the Diocese in the fall of 2014. The Plan included an inventory of the physical properties and records of the parish and a means of protecting them. It also included a provision for maintaining worship services should our building be unusable. It committed us to have a process for determining the status of all of our parishioners in the event of an emergency. It is this last item which we need to accomplish. We will establish a team at the church to do this. We have a questionnaire which we will be submitting to all parishioners. The purpose is to have the latest up to date info on ways to contact everyone. We intend to form neighborhood groups where the individuals can check on their neighbors. The team would only have to contact one member of the group. The info gathered will be kept confidential and only accessed in an emergency. We encourage you to include your neighbors in your group. The Plan is an ongoing project. It is available to all. Please ask me if you would like to have a copy. We welcome any comments or anyone who would like to be included on the team.

 Want to send someone a special invitation?  Have a special place to display a bazaar flyer?  Know that you are valued for your help and efforts

to make this Bazaar a success? —Episcopal Church Women (ECW)

Sunset Music | Arts and Verismo Opera present Guiseppe Verdi’s opera, La Forza del Destino The overture to La forza del destino makes use of themes from the opera, notably an ominous motif suggesting Fate and Leonora’s second-act aria, Madre, pietosa Vergine (Mother, merciful Virgin). A complex plot, based on what might seem a series of remarkable coincidences and singular failures of perception on the part of the leading players, brings several important and moving duets, notably the closing scene of the second act, where the Father Guardian advises Leonora on the religious life, and the duets between the two younger men, Don Alvaro and Don Carlo, Solenne in quest’ora (In this solemn hour). Leonora’s aria Pace, pace, mio Dio (Peace, peace, my God) in Act IV, movingly expresses her continuing feelings of love, as she lives her solitary life, and before the final tragedy. Date: Sat. December 10, 7 p.m. Venue: 1750 29th Avenue, San Francisco Tickets: $25 General, $20 Seniors/Students Limited Seating. Reserve early. Buy tickets online. For information on the production and the cast visit http://www.verismoopera.org/
