summary The proposal for ‘Newcastle City Hospice’ is situated in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It sits to the south of the city proper and is on the outskirts of a parkland namely ‘King Edward Park’ This design report has been prepared to detail the process behind developing ‘Newcastle City Hospice’ as part of the Masters of Architecture course at the University of Newcastle. The report covers the different phases of the design from initial conception through to a detailed and technical resolution. This report aims to give further insight to the particular elements explored within the project, elements of the building typology which have been scrutinised and celebrated.

01 project overview

hospice background The word hopice is derived from ‘hospital, hostel, hospitality and hotel’. The hospice movement aims to deliver an alternative way of thinking about the process of dying. It moves the process of dying out of the general wards of a hospital and into a separate area or building. The form of this hospice or palliative care ward becomes a new building typology, set apart from other heath institutions. A new type of place. A place that is required to house the mechanics of death, often unpleasent and unsettling. A place in which the process of dying is supported and enriched. Hospice buildings are often less mechanised than an acute or intensive care units. They cater for a generally two types of patients; those who are coming to the end of there life and those who require pain management associated with their terminal illness. In Australia hospice buildings are usually established by a religious affiliated health institution. The hospice movement has not been as prolific in Australia as it has in the United Kingdom where hospice buildings are a common alturnative to dying within an acute hospital setting.

The process of dying is often left within the fringes of our imagination. An idea cast aside while we live out our lives. The idea of a peaceful death, a chosen death is now a foreign idea. The moment of death in our lives which is now increasingly swallowed up by the mechanics of a modern health system. The intention of ‘Newcastle City Hospice’ is to take the moment and rethink where and how it occurs. To explore the emotions, individuality, frailty, strength and cultural trappings that make up our humanity and how this is expressed in our dying moments. To attempt to house this emotion, humanity, cultural sensitivities while paying homage to the individual and their final experiances.

precendence Precedence studies have been conducted thoughout the process of design. Different building types have been explored to provide an insight to the nature of spaces. Spaces which engage the senses. Several building types have been explored to understand the way in which they break down traditional form making, exploring the spaces inbetween the funtional spaces. Other studies have looked at particular hospice precedence to understand which elements could be included and omitted to align with the intent of the project.

The design of adequate buildings that can explore the opportunity of an aging population seems to be gaining momentum within the architectural community. An increase in the amount of people who are dying in Australia will require significant demand for architects to design for old age in all its guises.

site strategy 02.1 Former Newcastle Bowing Club, King Edward Park The former masonic bowling club sits as part of several prominent sites of newcastle’s coastline. See Diagram below

The site holds a place in the collective memory of newcastle, a former social and sporting gathering space. The buildings associated with the site have fallen into disrepair and stand to be demolished .

site strategy 02.2 Site Selection Selection of this prominent coastal location for a hospice is integral to the approach taken for the design of ‘Newcastle City Hospice’ Two sites were considered for the placement of the hospice, an urban site and a coastal site. The location of hospice building requires consideration to more than the physical makeup of a site. The location of a hospice involves discussion of the collective values of a community. A prominent hospice brings death into the collective consciousness of a community. The selection of the former Newcastle City Bowling Club in King Edward Park aligns with the intent of this project.

concept 03.1 concept Concept design became an opportunity to merge the observations of a site strategy with ideas of what a hospice should or might be. The model produced for this submission was the clearest expression of several conceptual ideas. The model explored possibilities of individuality, clustering, privacy and the relationship between the rooms. Particular focus was placed on the rooms in which people spend the last days of their life and the support or peripheral rooms/services that surround them and the way in which they relate. Diagramming supplemented this submission, ideas of the individuals journey were expressed visually along with ideas of support and human relationships, both between the patient and significant others and the patient and staff.

schematic 04.1 Schematic The first schematic proposal for ‘Newcastle City Hospice’ concentrated on merging ideas of economic rationalism and the constraints of a hospice brief. The resulting form was quite conservative and lost a lot of the spontaneity conceived in the conceptual approach. However it was a pivotal moment within the design process where the rigidity of a hospital brief could explored in program. Specific areas of concentration were the placement and feeling of the people places. Achieving access to light, views and exploring scale. Much consideration focused on how to merge form with an edge, to be near or far. To push the experience to the edge. Precedent studies focused on analysis of light and resting spaces in buildings, inspiration was drawn from architects such as Jørn Utzon Conceptual ideas that shaped the design focused on human experience and support. Feedback for this presentation pulled apart some planning improvements and relaxing the rigidity of the building.

developed 06.1 Developed Design Overview Developed design provided an opportunity to develop a particular section of the building and explore the materiality and details of the project. The developed design submission I presented culminated in an opportunity to design the rooms in which dying people spend their last moments and the immediate spaces outside. The nature of this room was given a great amount of deliberation and thought. Ideas explored include the following: light quality, light control, the view to the ocean during the day, the view to the stars at night, access to facilities, size of doors, ease of movement in the room and the materiality of things touched and things looked at. Ideas discussed were attempting to create an internal street and gathering spaces.

technical 07.1 technical Technical design melded aspects of design with the constraints and opportunities of construction. The production of technical drawings allowed the opportunity for the design to be framed in a new sense. One in which the details of the design could be expressed, in particular the inner workings of the building. The expression of materiality of the building in terms of environmental resistance and control were brought to light, exploration of ways to control heat gain, ventilation and cooling where tackled The way the building would be used, doors and windows opened, floors walked upon, ceilings viewed created design and technical melding. Technical resolution of the design on the whole was very satisfying as pragmatics and delight created an interesting tension within the building.

conclusion The completion of a project of this scale and complexity can never be fully resolved within a educational setting. I like to think rather that the culmination of a years work and the work produced can be seen as a gesture. The process of designing ‘Newcastle City Hospice’ has uncovered the complexity of human emotion. The complexity in cultural response to death. The years work has been an exercise in putting proposals forward in response to these complexities, responding to feedback and building a project based on this process. The culmination of this process has increased my awareness of the complexity of Architecture and how every element of a building can be considered from various perspectives and continually rethought and reworked. The exploration of the hospice typology has provoked a range of responses and emotions that have I hope produced a new and rewarding built form
