HIS WORK 20x20 HOUSE (2005)

ind e s i g n Felipe Assadi has participated in exhibitions in Barcelona, Pamplona, London, Quito, Tokyo and Santiago. Felipe Assadi runs a five-strong team at the Santiago-based firm he established in 1999. He specializes in elegant and hugely individual houses. His projects deliberately confront their surroundings, rather than blend in.

The house 20x20 is the result of exploring a “square module”. The process began by the selection of the coating, “ceramics 20x20”. Three conditions were then generated: Firstly, the entire house had to be divided in perfect modules of 20 centimeters. Secondly, all the enclosures, bays, furniture, illumination, etc. would be referred to a plot of 20x20 centimeters that would regulate the planes inside and outside of the house. Finally, the house would have a “square shape”. This project was completed in order to have a Guests & Games house to support the activities of the Schmitz house, in Calera de Tango, Chile. This project also had to accomplish a perfect blend between the house and its landscape surroundings. To a large extent this occurred by means of the transparency of the glass. The heavy walls left in order to maintain the idea of a “box module” had to be built in black ceramics which would reflect some of the elements of the surroundings.
