urkey, tinsel, mulled wine, fairy lights, Christmas Eve ghost stories, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’, peace on earth and good will to all men – there is an awful lot to love about Christmas. Not least the warm glow it brings. As a self confessed festiveophile I am more prone than most to yuletide joy. Which is lucky because December’s issue of iN is positively over flowing with seasonal cheer. In our ‘Winter Fun Guide’ we have all you need to know to make sure your Christmas holiday is jam packed with fun, from outdoor ice skating to a trip to Santa’s workshop, we have something for the whole family. Our stunning fashion and cover come courtesy of the most hotly anticipated high street designer collaboration perhaps of all time: Versace for H&M. Keeping on the high street we get you glittering without having to part with too much gold in our ‘Shine On’ party dressing page. And because its not just people who get dressed in December but trees as well, we feature some festive inspiration in our decoration dedicated interiors section. And for under the Yuletide evergreen we have a selection of indulgent and luxury gifts from the local area. Keeping with the celebratory spirit we run down our pick of places to celebrate the arrival of 2012 with our New Year’s Eve Guide, from champagne bars to Arabian restaurants we've got the perfect location for you to count down to that all important midnight. Not to mention local news, reviews, interviews and that all important Essex diary the 'What's On Guide'. Phew, after all that I am just about ready for a mince pie (or two). Until 2012 - Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year.

ThE KINgS OAK’S lINzI pOllArD IS FUNDrAISINg FOr MAcS Linzi Pollard, business owner of the Kings Oak, High Beech has signed up for the 2012 marathon, in support of the MACS (Micro & Anopthalmia Society). Linzi’s own family was affected when her grandson Calum was born at Easter with a condition called Anopthalmia, which translates literally ‘without eyes’, and means that his eyes had not developed properly. Little Calum is a vision of cuteness and we applaud the family’s strength and Linzi’s determination. Linzi is hoping to raise in excess of 10K for the charity. You can show your support on 27th January- when Linzi is holding a Ladies night at The Kings Oak. Welcome to iN’s society column, ‘Girl About Town’ where socialite Caroline Polledri gives her own hilarious take on being out and about in Essex and beyond.

Where to begin? And what a month. Between nights out in Essex and East London there isn’t much of the South East I haven’t covered. Fuelling my adventures and keeping my fire fed, were visits to a variety of eateries and a sprinkle of ‘come to me’ food including a personally delivered pie and mash and a night with the girls in Fajita heaven! Included in my eating expeditions there have also been two shopping trips to Westfield (very impressed, although more food than fashion), a flat warming party (in my new pad) a flat warming party (in someone else’s pad) and a very obscure, secret ‘lift party’ in Hackney which, was undoubtedly the best party I have ever been to. Back in my beloved Essex, I have had more than one venture out to 15 York Hill, both eating and drinking and I have to say this venue appropriately slots into the area without proclaiming to be ostentatious or crass, just good food, a good vibe and terrific music. It’s the venue and home of the new Essex cool; leave your ego at the door along with your need for typical (microwave) pub food, as neither is welcome here. In other parts of London and the Greater I have happily spent a lot of time in my new ‘locals’ which includes, Zumba at St Barnabas Church, a ‘show round’ of a (never going to join) LA fitness and a cab office that sells soft toys in it’s basement (I kid you not, very, very weird). I must say that however much I love my new London living, I have at some moments felt like the new kid at a very large school and it pains me to say it, but some slight bullying has occurred. Only last week I was forced into Karaoke at the Birdcage in Columbia Road AND made to sing in front of everyone! Can you imagine me? Centre of attention, all eyes glaring and as people laughed and cheered at my almost unrecognisable rendition of Alanis Morisette I realised that if this is what happens when you make friends with a tyrant like London - then I like it! Of course my fun and frolics all come at a price and the results of my (miss) adventures are as follows: broken iPhone, damaged when carelessly left in my back pocket while going to the loo. failed attempt at giving up smoking although it’s just the weekend ones I’m not having, so not all bad.

worried thought that no party would ever match up to the ‘lift’ one.

LOuGHTON’S NEW bEAuTY SALON, THE LEMON TREE HOLdS AN OPEN dAY

oughton’s latest, premier multi-purpose beauty salon, held a glamorous open day to celebrate their arrival to the area. The dazzling event saw guests sipping pink champagne and enjoying delicious nibbles as the salon show cased the range of treatments and treats available at the boutique beauty hotspot. Decorated luxuriously in black and pink The Lemon Tree adds a touch of the decadent to the girly, with chandeliers and cut flowers a plenty. With dermalogica facials, Gelish and Opi nails, lash extensions, spray tans, massage and teeth whitening and whole host of other grooming lovelies all available The Lemon Tree has an awful lot to offer. What is more believing that ‘No beauty regime is complete without perfect glossy hair’ The Lemon Tree also has a dedicated hair styling team. And I hear from a little birdie that stylist Ashley’s big blow dry is famously perfect for a big night out. With all this pampering available under one roof, we would not be surprised if The Lemon Tree became many people’s one stop shop for all their beauty needs. Which, as it turns out is exactly what owner, Angie Vassallo, who is well known for her star studded client list, had in mind. As she told us ‘I’m so passionate about the beauty industry and providing a relaxing, professional environment for clients, so I wanted to create a beautiful and trendy new salon for people to come in, unwind and be pampered. In today’s stressful and busy world, I’m aware that most of us are timepoor, so I really wanted to create a salon which could offer clients everything they need in the same space, saving them time and allowing them to have their nails manicured and a massage on the same afternoon, with no hassle.’

THE LEMON TREE 10 Church Hill, Loughton Essex IG10 1LA

Offering no hassle, professional beauty locally and all in one glamorous place, Angie Vassallo shows us the best thing to do when life gives you lemons is to make The Lemon Tree.

Brief with... Melissa Lee from Urban Retreat at Home.

iN: M:

Hello Melissa, can you tell us what it is you do? I am a franchisee of Urban Retreat at Home. The Urban Retreat group, who have a spectacular award winning spa on the top floor of Harrods, recently celebrated their 10th anniversary. The new ‘at Home’ service is designed to extend the Urban Retreat experience to everyone without them having to leave their house or office. We offer a great range of services including facials, body treatments, manicures, pedicures and massage. We also specialise in delivering bespoke beauty parties and coming to pamper you in the office.

iN:

What a brilliant idea, where can customers get this service? I’m based in west Essex but the wonderful thing about Urban Retreat at Home is that we’re a team of therapists operating all over the UK, all highly trained to the Urban Retreat standards. We visit homes, offices, hotels, parties, weddings… in fact we’d relish the challenge of any unusual locations you’d like to suggest!

M:

iN: M:

What is your favourite bit of the job? I love owning my own business, but the best bit has got to be happy and satisfied customers.

iN: M:

Where is your favourite place to go and eat? You will always find me in Tuscany in Loughton around lunch time. Or for a fancy dinner I like Sheesh in Chigwell or The White Bull Brasserie in Loughton.

iN: M:

And to wet your whistle? I like a nice cocktail and to try new places. I generally prefer somewhere like Gilgamesh where it’s more dinner and drinks.

iN: M:

As it’s the Christmas issue, what’s top of your Xmas list? Maybe a pair of Louboutins! Or a lovely perfume like Diptyque Fig or Molecule 01, something that is a bit special.

iN: M:

With the New Year on the horizon what’s next for you? This year has been such a whirlwind of excitement: launching the business, heading to events, working with clients in lots of interesting places (Vogue House in London was particularly fabulous!). So for next year I’m looking forward to more of the same.

iN: Lastly, what would you do if you weren’t doing this? M: I would have chosen to work in a nice office somewhere. Actually I would probably choose to work in Urban Retreat’s HQ, I love the idea of working to see an idea turn into something real and I love being part of the beauty industry. Days Out CHRISTMAS AT COVENT GARdEN until 14th January

LAPLANd uK

until 24th december The mother of all Santa Grotto's comes to Bewl Water Estate as Father Christmas and his elves relocate to the home county woodlands of Kent for this seasonal family outing. Children can help the elves in the toy factory, visit Mother Christmas' kitchen to try their hand at decorating ginger bread (her husband’s favourite apparently), before meeting the big man in red himself in his enchanted woodland home and receive a their cuddly husky toy as a thank you for all their help in St. Nick's workshop. There is also ice skating, huskies, reindeer and Nordic folk tales told by the Sami people to keep your little Santa helpers entertained on the lead up to Christmas Morning. Booking essential.

Covent Garden has a host of festive delights laid on for the Christmas holidays. The bauble festooned marketplace is transformed into a winter wonderland with a British-grown Christmas tree on the west piazza and a 15 foot topiary reindeer on the east piazza. HYdE PARK WINTER WONdERLANd until 3rd January

Kentwell Hall is dedicating its festive season to the era and man who gave us Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim. From decorating the tree to carols and crackers, Kentwell Hall shines a light on the Victorian origins of what we consider the 'traditional' Christmas by transporting us back in time to the 19th Century. Meet the house's historical residents as they prepare for the big day, listen to Dicken's classic 'A Christmas Carol', be entertained in the Victorian music hall and peruse the wares in the Victorian shops which form the re-created Dickens Square.

Shows For Kids MATILdA THE MuSICAL until 30th January

Once again Hyde Park plays host to the Xmas extravaganza that is Winter Wonderland. This year’s event includes the usual rides and attractions along with a giant observational wheel, festive market, Santa grotto and two circuses - 'Christmas Circus' and 'Cirque Extreme' - from the family-friendly Zippos Circus. The Wonderland also features the largest outdoor ice rink in the UK, which this year has relocated to the Victorian bandstand. For those looking to warm their cockles after the yuletide onslaught should note there is a fully heated and covered bar and restaurant, the Spiegel Saloon, which has live entertainment every night.

Comedian Tim Minchin sets Roald Dahl's classic tale of school days and telepathy to music with this riotously funny stage adaptation. Rotten rhymes a plenty, the play which follows eponymous brilliant and precocious child progeny, has something for everyone, where children will relish its portrayal of adult nastiness, injustice and eventual comeuppance, grownups will enjoy the satirical take on the modern epidemic childhood illusory superiority. Witty and laugh out loud funny, expect standing ovations.

The astounding Southwark Playhouse recreates the magic of Diana Wynne Jones’ classic children's novel. Sophie is a teenager who finds herself magicked into old age by the Wicked Witch of The Waste. Taking shelter in the home of Howl, a strange but flamboyant wizard whose magical castle can move between dimensions, she embarks on a journey to break the spell, only to discover that there is a lot more to heartless Howl than meets the eye. With original music from The Guillemot’s Fyfe Dangerfield and none other than Steven Fry as narrator this is bound to one of the most remarkable theatrical treats of the festive season.

The impressive venue in the heart of Epping Forest gets an enchanted festive makeover in the lead up to Christmas as the fully renovated Victorian Kings Oak is transformed into a winter wonderland. Offering a range of yuletide packages the Kings Oak is perfect for an intimate dinner for two, lunch with friends or a corporate cocktail party of up to 300 guests. Whether it is relaxing by the gastro pub’s roaring fire with a glass of Winter Pimms or dancing the night away on the KO dance floor to a classic collection of party pop and soulful Christmas tunes, this unique local venue has an awful lot to offer this winter.

THE LEBANESE, WANSTEAD T: 020 8989 5620 ADVERTORIAL

THE

One of Wanstead’s best loved institutions, The Bungalow Café, has undergone an evening Lebanese revolution under the guidance of a new and highly experienced chef. Specialising in the region’s meze iN Magazine couldn’t resist a visit to what we discovered to be a local hidden gem. estled in a quiet residential street, The Lebanese does little to announce its presence, but that doesn’t prevent the restaurant being three quarters full on the hardly prime eating out time of early evening on a wintry Tuesday, presumably by those who are in-the-know. Decorated in a relaxed and homely manner, the menu at The Lebanese revolves around authentic Lebanese dishes, with salads, skewed meats and dips taking centre stage. On the advice of the friendly and charming staff we order the meze, which offers a wonderfully comprehensive selection of the region’s food and is so quite ridiculous in its generosity that it is nothing short of a feast. The first course arrived in the guise of a myriad of dips including hummus, baba ghanouj (aubergine, lemon and garlic puree), tahine and tzatziki, falafel, tabbouleh salad and fattoush. All served with warm pita breads. Fattoush, a salad comprised of diced tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, mint, radish and lemon dressing, is perhaps the most archetypal of Lebanese dish. It is also a great barometer of the quality any particular Lebanese eatery, primarily because the dish just doesn’t work unless the ingredients are at their very freshest. It also happens to be my very favourite Lebanese dish. And I am delighted to say the fattoush dished up at The Lebanese is one of the best I have had this side of the Arabian Hinterland. The other dishes also did not disappoint, with the humus being pleasantly flavoursome and the falafel packing a parsley punch without being over powering. The second round of dishes consisted of lounza bacon and haloumi served warm on pita and aspid jesh, the chef’s speciality of chicken livers cooked in garlic, lemon, spices and brandy. The latter, which stands out as perhaps one of the more unusual dishes to be

found on The Lebanese’s concerto of classic dishes from the district , and was both rich and delicious, served in its spicy cooking juices which were perfect for moping up with a piece of pita. The final course was a meat eater’s dream, coming in the form of a platter of homemade Lebanese sausages, char-gilled marinated chicken wings, shish taouk and beef kafta. All the meat was expertly cooked, with the marinated chicken of the shish taouk being a particularly tender treat for the senses. In an economic climate where we are all watching our pennies The Lebanese operates a ‘bring your own bottle’ system, with no application of a corkage fee, making it a cost effective way of enjoying a brilliant dinner out without having to break the bank on a drinks bill. If you are planning on ordering the meze be sure to bring your appetite, as there is no disguising that it is a lot of food. Though that in my opinion is a positive, for those looking for something lighter dishes are available to order individually. The Lebanese has a strong focus on homemade cooking and fresh ingredients, which is evident from how brilliant the food tastes and its popularity. Bold, simple, brilliant punchy flavours served without fuss or fanfare. If you have not tried Lebanese food before, this hidden local gem is definitely the place to start.

TREVOR LAKE IS... THE buSINESS dOCTOR

Every month the Lb Group experts answer your burning financial questions so that you don’t get burnt in the pocket.

I am currently trying to raise bank finance to take my business to the next level but from what I understand in the press and my business colleagues finding funding is becoming increasingly hard. Is this true and is there a way to raise some much needed finance?

With confidence in the global economy low due to the continued economic issues of Eurozone you would not be blamed to think that there is little or no funding opportunities out there, with banks closing their cheque books to protect their assets. Although gone are the days of high lending at low interest rates, there are still opportunities out there. A strong business plan, along with a detailed breakdown of how the monies will be spent are both key in building the confidence that a bank will have in lending you money.

So, what are the banks looking for? The banks are not looking for ‘astronomical’ projections with no basis in reality, but an honest, up to date plan that the banks can see working. Remember, they are not just reviewing a business plan, but they are inspecting you too! So late proposals with unclear objectives with insufficient research are just asking to fail, as the banks see this as a reflection on you.

What are they going to fund? Banks are not going to fund a business purely because the owner requests so. They want to see an element of co-financing by the owner. Be it to help a business going through a lean spell, or as in your case to help take them to the next step, banks are willing to take the risk if the business owner is too. So, to answer your question, yes there is funding available, and banks are willing to lend. Although the rates and amounts are not as favourable as a few years ago, bank funding still makes up the majority of all UK company financing needs.

If you have an accountancy related question that you would like Lb Group to answer in a forthcoming issue, please email editor@in-magazine.com. Trevor Lake, a director, can be contacted by telephone on 020 8221 8282 or by email at trevor.lake@lbgroupltd.com

in MOTORING

PEUGEOT’S CONVERTIBLE OFFERS FUN RAIN OR SHINE. It took a 200-mile journey to Wales to get the point of Peugeot’s convertible the 308 CC. The plan was simple, get to one of the most exciting roads in the UK – the Black Mountain pass, which cuts through the Brecon Beacons. Then drive it.

Things got off to a great start, it was dry and in south west London the sun was shining. It was roof-down weather and the CC duly obliged. With the roof down the CC is a good place to be. In fact it’s warmer than many cars I’ve been in with the roof up. The Airwave system channels warm air to the back of your neck, the heated seats are positively sweltering, and the heater is effective too. Inside, there's a sporty feel to the cabin with three centrally located air vents. There's the familiar mix of predominantly soft, and shiny plastics, with flashes of aluminium, and white dials with chrome surrounds. Poking around will reveal trim of a less tactile nature, but nothing too shocking for the price range. Equipment levels are good; there's sat-nav, leather, an iPhone compatible stereo, parking sensors, cruise control, automatic lights and wipers, and dual-zone climate control. Interior space up front is good and it is easy to get comfy, although rear legroom is minimal. And, strangely, there is not a cup holder in sight. A capacious boot, especially with the roof up, serves as some condolence, though. Taking a step back before heading out on our cross-UK jaunt allowed us to take in the finer points of the CC’s exterior looks and with the roof down it’s all good. Sideon the CC’s a svelte-looking beast, with none of the ungainliness that plagues many a hard-topped convertible. Unfortunately, it does suffer from this with the roof up.

WIDER, LONGER, LIGHTER, FASTER - BETTER. Anticipation comes in many forms: trialing a new sandwich at lunch, 5pm on a Friday, the monthly wine delivery, a diamond ring or the divorce papers... but for car people it doesn’t get much more exciting than the launch of a new Porsche 911. Not that you’d notice the new 911 (known as the 991) is almost an entirely new car, Porsche has kept everything true to the heritage of the original so it looks exactly like a 911 only wider and more purposeful than the old model.

Our car came in 200bhp spec, which meant we were keen to get away. The horsepower comes courtesy of a petrol 1.6-litre turbo. Which does a good job of hiding its small capacity and of hauling the relatively heavy 308 CC up to a respectable lick, and it makes a nice rorty noise whist doing it. This encourages you exploit the 0-60mph time of 8.1 seconds, on a more than strictly necessary basis. The top speed of 149mph would lead you to believe the CC would settle into a relaxed cruise, but as we headed on to the motorway the engine was noisier than we would have liked. It’s a shame, because our well-intentioned 200-mile slog was rewarded with? Well nothing apart from zero visibility and driving rain, leaving any plans for a shakedown of the 308 CC’s finer handling points dead in the (abundant) water. What we can tell you, however, is that it corners flat, has plenty of grip, and a compliant, well-damped ride. The steering starts off reassuring but on turn-in fails to weight up, flapping your confidence to adopt a gung-ho approach to cornering. But then bigger speeds result in more protest from the usually stiff-feeling chassis, so it may be best just not to bother. And anyway, the rain gave a perfect opportunity to sample life with the roof up, a quick job and one that can be carried out on the move (well, up to 7mph).

Performance is up thanks to a lighter steel/alloy composite body, which loses 45kg of podge over the old model, and more powerful engines. Meaning the entry level 3.4-litre flat-6 can reach 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and jog on to around 180mph. Handling is where the 911’s always been a winner thanks to a chassis that’s been honed for so long it may well have preceded the wheel. The weight of the rear-engined layout on the driven wheels means excellent traction from the get-go, and erogenic steering. But what’s made the 911 so successful is its ability to handle the daily grind, and the new model will offer the 911 even more flexibility. With a new luxurious cabin, a projected 35mpg economy figure, the option to have the best of both worlds with a PDK (dual clutch) gearbox, and conventional proportions which make it much better suited to threading through city streets. Which means there really isn’t any reason not to buy the new 911, it’s got everything you could want in a performance can and it is practical enough to insure you never curse your ownership of one. It will be launched in December so if you have a spare £71,449 burning a hole in your pocket it’s an obvious choice for Christmas. It is certainly at the top of my wish list.

So £26,000 for a Peugeot convertible, is it too much? Well, it is a question of what is important to you. For a shade under that you could have a Volkswagen EOS that also boasts a folding hard-top, and nicer interior, but is a fair bit slower (at this price) and in its clinical niceness lacks some of the Peugeot’s character, as well as many of the toys. If you’re looking for car that can easily fulfill the business of daily life, then down tools and turn into something altogether more fun, then the 308 CC’s an obvious choice. IN MAGAzINE’s RosE KEEN MEETs wITh sTEps AhEAd’s MARy BuTLER To TALK chILdcARE ANd ThE dREAM BEhINd LouGhToN’s NEw NuRsERy. t is a bright autumnal day when I pull up at Steps Ahead. Located in a self contained part of The Academy, Loughton, Steps Ahead is a brand new Ofstead registered nursery for children aged 2-5. As I am buzzed into the brightly decorated day nursery I am met by the nostalgic smells of poster paints and play-doh, and suddenly it’s like I am four years old again and on my way to play group. Mary Butler, owner and registered person at Steps Ahead is expecting me. A friendly and petit woman, she has considerably less trouble than I perching on the primarily coloured child sized seats where we sit down for a chat. Dressed in the play friendly Steps Ahead uniform of a bright blue sweatshirt, she is all smiles as she introduces me to Alfie, the nursery’s first and most charming attendee. Given the overwhelming warmth of her presence it is easy to understand why children are instantly at ease with Mary. With over 28 years of childcare experience it is fair to say Mary knows a thing or two about caring for other people’s little’uns. ‘I started as a volunteer’ Mary, who is herself a mother, tells me ‘before being offered a job at the school and from there I moved into childcare. But I have always wanted my own nursery.’ And so was born the vision behind Steps Ahead. ‘I knew I wanted my nursery to be sole use,’ Mary explains, ‘so that we could have the children’s art and photos on the wall. Both Pauline, my business partner, and I have worked in nurseries that were not sole use, and all that having to 66 in MAGAZINE

dismantle everything at the end of the day can prevent both children and staff feeling settled and there are security fears.’

Having been planned for nigh on 28 years finding the right locations for Steps Ahead must have been paramount. I ask Mary how she finally decided, ‘We just fell in love with this place’ Mary says indicating the child friendly surroundings, ‘it is self contained and it affords a great deal of flexibility. The location also means there is plenty of opportunity to take the children outside. We have a playground and we can go for walks, a few days ago we took little Alfie (who has himself taken up residence under the colouring in table where Mary and I are sat) to go look at the autumn leaves.’ Mary smiles at Alfie who flashes her a grin before heading back to his sandbox. ‘Giving the children an opportunity to spend time outside is very important to us, as not all children have access to a garden or a park at home.’ It is this level of consideration which no doubt marks Mary out as an exemplar of her profession.

But her perception expands beyond the needs of the child, to the needs of the parents as well. She is explaining to me the changes in modern parenthood, as Pauline Manning copartner at Steps Ahead joins us at our diminutive table. ‘Parents have more to juggle these days; there are a lot more demands on their time.’ It is with these demands in mind that they decided on the Steps Ahead time schedule, ‘We offer both full day and sessional’. Opening at 8 and closing at 6, Steps Ahead aims to do all it can to make modern parenting just that little bit easier. ‘We also plan to hold coffee mornings,’ Mary continues, ‘so all the mums can get to know each other.’ Understanding the needs of the parents and the children is clearly both Mary’s and Steps Ahead’s forte. ‘I have worked in large nurseries, but they just felt so impersonal and too large. I wanted something smaller, to create a sort of home from home for the children. What I wanted to create was a nursery where the children were safe, secure and comfortable with the staff, so there mums and dads could go to work and not worry.’ And by the looks of Steps Ahead it would seem Mary has got exactly what she wanted.
